We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you and yours a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the coming New Year. We think back to the great racing we witnessed this past year and the great times we enjoyed with racing friends and family. What a great sport we all share! We look forward to doing it all again in the coming race season.
Happy Racing in 2010!

Southern Iowa Speedway provides great racing in November!
We headed to the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa this past Sunday afternoon for what would be our first ever race in November in Iowa. We saw some great racing action and the weather was beautiful...in fact we were more comfortable than some mid-summer races we attended. A great field of cars filled the pits, the program was run in efficient time...until an unfortunate melee occurred in the stock car feature, and what an exciting finish that feature provided the fans.
Because both the B modifieds and the hobby stocks had to run B mains to cut their features down to a 24 car starting field, the A modifieds were first up for their main event. The 25-lap feature saw the familiar #17P of Brad Pinkerton take off like a rocket from his outside front row starting position. He rode the topside...his often preferred line...to near perfection except for a slight "kiss" of the wall at one point. That would not stop his relentless pursuit of the checkered flag as he took the win by quite a margin over second place finisher Zack VanderBeek. Third went to Scott Dickey, from starting in eighth position, fourth to young Ryan Gustin from Marshalltown, and fifth to Donovan Lodge, from Andover, Illinois who came from far back in the starting field.
The B modifieds had their starting field of 24 cars completed with four cars qualifying to tag the feature through a B main. Andrew Schroeder won the B main followed by Jimmy Broszeit, Josh Modde, and the 19H of Brandon Hare. The A main found the 8J of AJ Johnson on the pole position. After a yellow at the beginning of the race to clear a mishap, the rest of the 15-lap feature ran green to checkered. Johnson kept his front running spot the entire race to take the win. Cayden Carter made an impressive run to take the runner-up position, third went to Boone, Iowa's Scott Davis who came from twelfth spot, fourth to the #5 of Colter Deutsch from Ellsworth, Minnesota and rounding out the top five was Roland, Iowa's Matt Lettow.
The hobby stocks also had to complete their field by adding the top four cars from a B main.
That B main was won by Clayton Crump from Centrailia, Missouri and following him to round out those top four, were Kevin Spilde, Pete Hutzel and Steve Larson. The track proved challenging to the drivers as it was slick with a small cushion on the top. Chris Hovden from Cresco took the top prize...his third of the weekend as he'd also won the two previous nights at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri. He was challenged late by the 2N of Donavan Nunnikhoven from Kellogg, Iowa, who tried to take the high line coming out of turn four coming to the checkers, with a lap car between him and Hovden. However, that gallant effort didn't pan out and Hovden took his trifecta of the weekend. Nunnikhoven had to be content with second, third place went to Todd Reitzler, fourth to Danny Thrasher, and fifth to Kris Walker.
With the show moving along nicely, the final feature of the early evening, was the USRA stock cars. The 20-lap feature had only two laps down, when disaster struck. At the front of the field, it appeared Nathan Wood had a problem as he came down the front stretch. The Flying Dutchman, Mike VanGenderen was to his outside as he went high into turn one, and unfortunately ended up getting crunched into the wall as Wood pushed high. This then resulted in a multi-car melee that needed to be cleared and would delay the race for nearly 30 minutes. VanGenderen's car looked to be without anything remaining under the rear end, ending his night, as well as several other disabled cars. One of those was the former car belonging to Zack VanderBeek, and on this evening, being driven by promoter Todd Staley. He was caught up in the mess and had to retire for the night. We understand that the car will be driven next year by Staley's younger son, Logan. Looks like it was father who put the first dents on his son's ride!
One of the cars also involved in the carnage, was the 20dub of Shane Weller, who had to have his car towed to the work area. He was able to join the end of the field when the green finally flew again. Matt Greiner and Brian Mitrisin challenged for the top two spots but Mitrisin would then have to retire with problems after having taken the lead. With Greiner leading and the 15 of Mitch Hovden, in tow behind him, who should be coming through the field at a maddening pace, but the 20dub of Shane Weller. It was quite amazing to see him work his way through the competition, overtake second place of Hovden, and then be hot on the heels of the leader. It took the final lap for him to accomplish the task, but going through turn three, he got the job done, to take the checkers to the whole crowd on it's feet! Greiner was second, third went to Hovden, fourth to Mike Bergan and fifth to long-time racer who has made many laps around the 1/2 mile track in years gone by, Steve Jackson.
It was a great way to end our local racing season this year. Who would have thought we would be enjoying great racing weather in November, after having endured cold and wet weather throughout the scheduled season? Thanks to Todd Staley for seeing the foresight in trying for the third time, (it's the "charm" isn't it?) and successfully complete the second night of the Fall Challenge.
Until next time, happy racing!

Beatrice Octoberfest winners are Matt Brack and Mother Nature
As we headed west on Friday morning, we were hoping the forecast was going to be wrong for the Beatrice Octoberfest racing weekend. The farther we traveled west, the more the skies cleared and by the time we arrived in Beatrice, the sun was shining, it was 54 degrees and the winds were calm. That gave us hope of getting to see some racing that evening, which we did. However, Saturday was a different story!
Friday, four classes ran complete shows; IMCA Sport Compact, IMCA Hobby Stock, IMCA SportMods, and IMCA Modified. First up was the Sport Compact class which saw nineteen cars run their feature. The winner was the 94M of Brock Mcdougall. In the IMCA Hobby Stock division, local Beatrice driver, Jesse VanLaningham came from starting 15th to catch and pass Robby Marsh, who finished second. Third was Hans Houfek, fourth went to Lonnie Greuter, and fifth to Nick Beckman.
The IMCA SportMods had to narrow their field down to 24 cars by running two B mains. The feature did not get off to a good start, as on lap one, eleven cars were involved in a mess on the front stretch. One car, that of Shay Woods of Humeston, Iowa, knocked down one of the inside cement barriers, and then proceeded to end up on top of the next barrier. Early leader was local driver Gary Saathoff with Ankeny, Iowa's Kevin Sather hot on his tail, and Tyler Frye giving chase to the top two. Later, Sather would exit the race with what appeared to be a broken tie rod. Taking the checkers was Gary Saathoff, second went to Tyler Frye, third to Adam Armstrong, fourth to Kyle Olberding, and fifth to Daryl Dorn.
There were 55 IMCA modifieds in competition on Friday evening. Six heats and two b mains later, the field was narrowed to a 24 car starting field for the evening's final feature. The temperatures had dropped into the 30's by this time, but the saving grace was there had been very little wind all night long, which made it bearable for drivers and fans alike. The track had stayed quite racy all night, though there was a spongy area or two in turns one and two. Early battling on the track was between Will Brack, Chris Abelson and David Murray. Brack and Abelson got together resulting in Brack's early departure from the race. Murray was giving it his all later, when he spun in turn two and also retired just about the same time as Johnny Saathoff's car caught on fire and he went to the pits. Will Brack's brother, Matt in his 16M machine, came from seventh spot to overtake Abelson for the top position. Meanwhile, an impressive run behind the leaders by Jay Noteboom and Chase Junghans had ensued. When the final checkers of the night flew, it was Matt Brack from Mead, Colorado taking home the win by a good margin, followed by Chris Abelson. Third went to Jay Noteboom, fourth to Chase Junghans, and fifth to Bob Zoubek.
We knew it was not sounding good for racing on Saturday. When we peeked out of the motel room window, we saw a rain/snow mixture falling and temps were in the 20's. The Weather Channel was showing 17 inches of snow that had fallen to our northwest, in North Platte, Nebraska and snow was currently falling up in Omaha. Promoter Toby Kruse made the decision about 10 a.m. and "pulled the plug" on racing. It had already been decided that Sunday would not be used as a make-up day which had been originally scheduled. We loaded up and headed out, traveling in an alternate direction from our usual route home, in hopes of avoiding the snow that was said to be currently falling up in the Omaha area. We had a short distance of freezing rain on our windshield, but avoided any snow.
We counted ourselves lucky to have seen some good racing on Friday night and not have the whole weekend be lost. We had heard that some races back home in our area had also been scrapped and postponed, which will now leave us with more choices to finish out our racing season. The last we have heard, the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa will be running this coming Saturday, October 17 as a make-up date, the following Saturday, October 24th will be Shiverfest in Donnellson, Iowa at the Lee County Speedway, and the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa will attempt to finish the second night of their Fall Challenge, on Saturday, October 31st. Also check out the calendar of events on http://www.positivelyracing.com/ for even more possibilities. However, at this time of the year, it would always be a good idea to call the tracks to make sure the events are still on. Happy racing!

Bloomquist wins his second Knoxville Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals
A much drier day prevailed on Sunday, October 4th, when the Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals finally got to run. After three disappointing rain outs on consecutive nights, the final night was postponed until late Sunday afternoon at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. The crowd was treated to great competition in the 100-lap feature, and in the end, it was Scott Bloomquist taking the win for the second time in the six year history of the event.
We had watched the weather forecast and kept an eye on radar ever since Thursday and had opted out of heading to Knoxville on any of the three previous nights that were scheduled. With the prospect of a much more pleasant night of racing on Sunday, we headed the vehicle toward Knoxville in hopes of watching the late models. By the time we arrived, the parking places were at a premium and people were tailgating and milling around everywhere. We were rather surprised to find the grandstands nearly empty when we made our way inside. When the motors started up however, the fans started pouring in and by the start of the first of five heats, there was a nice crowd on hand.
The heavy track did not produce anywhere near the record of 16.631 seconds around the 1/2-mile track during time trials. The five heat races also saw few cars advancing very far from their starting positions. The call was made to blade and repack the track before the C Main and B Main in hopes of a better racing surface. We were skeptical as were most of the fans around us, that this would make much improvement. However, we were proved wrong, as the rest of the racing was quite competitive and produced multi-line racing.
Twenty-eight cars started the 100-lap main event with NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart tagging the field. Those two drivers had to make the journey up from Kansas City after having competed there during the day, with Tony Stewart having won the Sprint Cup race. It was impressive to learn that both drivers, when interviewed from Kansas City, mentioned they were now on their way to Knoxville, Iowa to race. They were both allowed a hot lap session before the feature and although Stewart turned the fastest times of the day, the old saying of, "they run the best right before they blow" held true! His crew was able to get a new powerhouse inserted, and Stewart started the race in 27th position.
Shannon Babb took advantage of his pole starting position and led the race until about lap 65, when Scott Bloomquist put his familiar green and black #0 into the lead. Shortly after that, Babb entered the pits and a battle upfront between Bloomquist, Billy Moyer, Jimmy Mars and Brady Smith ensued. Mars would later retire to the pits and a new car was thrown into the mix when 20th starter Tim McCreadie made his way up to third position past Smith. Advancing well from 12th spot was Josh "Kid Rocket" Richards, previous winner Brian Birkhofer and fighting hard for position with Birkhofer was Tony Stewart. Scott Bloomquist took the $40,000 payday win, having repeated from 2005, Billy Moyer took second, third went to Tim McCreadie last year's winner, fourth to Brady Smith winner in 2007, fifth to Josh Richards, sixth to Brian Birkhofer, first winner from 2004, and Tony Stewart finished in seventh.
It was unfortunate that the full three day program was unable to be completed, but those fans who did see Sunday's show, saw a good one. Fifty-five drivers competed and we noted that perhaps only a handful of drivers did not return. It's very frustrating to drivers, fans, and promoters alike to have Mother Nature throw such a wrench into things, but there is no control over Her. Hopefully, the 7th annual running will have much nicer weather for the entire show.
There are a few more races within our area. We are going to try and make it to Beatrice, Nebraska this coming weekend for their annual Octoberfest show scheduled for October 9-10 and don't forget Shiverfest at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson on October 24th. Shiverfest is always a great way to end the season around here. Fun for the drivers and kids alike as they trick-or-treat the participating drivers on the frontstretch.
Happy racing!

Marshalltown's Oktemberfest mods go topless
Sunday September 27th, saw Marshalltown Speedway end their season with an Oktemberfest special. The modfiieds were allowed to "go topless" for a novel experience for both drivers and fans. Visiting drivers would take home wins as well as track regulars, as they tried their hand at maneuvering the slick track. It was an extremely windy night and by the end of the event, the fans in the grandstand were covered in dust.
First feature of the evening was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks. Going into the contest, point leader in this series was Ed Nelson as he held a six point lead over Bret Moyer. When Nelson had a flat early in the feature and had to tag the field, it was appearing that perhaps he would not be the champion of the series on this their final show. Moyer started from the pole and led the entire race but Nelson would make his way through the field to finish third and retain the point lead and win the championship. Moyer took the checkers in first, second went to Brian Murray, third to Nelson, fourth to Brad Moyer and fifth to Bob Murray. Missing in action on the night, was Carl Moyer who we heard was under the weather and unable to attend.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature saw the familiar #6 ride of Mike Morrill sitting in Victory Lane once again. As usual, he would hand over his trophy to a lucky youngster in the stands. Morrill came from starting third to grab the early lead and from there on, would lead the rest of the way.
Second went to Randy Bryan who started near the end of the field, third to Joel Huggins, fourth to Troy Hudson who was late arriving and started on the tail, and fifth to James May.
The hobby stock class saw a visiting driver from the northeastern part of Iowa take home the hardware. Chris Hovden from Cresco, who is a regular USRA sanctioned driver and who runs Cresco and Decorah tracks on a regular basis, took the feature win. Donavan Nunnikhoven from Kellogg, Iowa, had to settle for second after leading early on. Third went to visiting driver, Chris Spilde from Ridgeway, Iowa, fourth to Terry Shaffar, and rounding out the top five was Steve Holthaus from Cresco.
The Sportmod class had to run a B-main to cut their starting field to 24 cars. Matt Lettow from Roland, Iowa took that B-main contest. Brad Iverson from Grinnell, led the early circuits of the feature until "old Mr. Steady", Duane VanDeest put his car into the lead. Austin Lucas found the track to his liking, as he caught up to the leaders, and made the pass into the lead. At the finish line, it was Lucas taking the victory over veteran driver Bill Hildreth with a great run to finish a close second. Third went to VanDeest, fourth to Kyle Brown with a nice advancement from starting about ninth, and fifth went to Brad Iverson. This race was filled with veteran drivers as also competing was Em Fretheim from Decorah, Iowa; a seasoned veteran of the late model ranks who had competed at the Marshalltown Speedway back in the 80's.
The stock cars were allowed to run under IMCA and USRA rules, allowing for a different carburetor if desired. The track had become slick, slick, slick by this time and with the very strong wind blowing from the northwest, when cars got into the unpacked portion of the track, we were all eating a good amount of dirt! Local racer, Dave Atcher got out front early from his outside front row starting spot, and looked to be sailing along to the win. However, another visitor from the northeast, Kurt Krauskopf, was making his way cautiously through traffic and picking off cars. After reeling in Atcher by running the dangerous top-side, he was able to drop to the bottom, get inside Atcher, and make the pass into the lead. Krauskopf, a regular USRA competitor, took the win followed by Atcher in second. Finishing third, was Mike VanGenderen who early on had to retire to the pits for a tire change and tag the field under a yellow, worked his way nicely through the field, to take third, fourth went to Andy Bryant, and fifth to another visitor, Mike Bergan from Ridgeway, Iowa.
The final contest on the program was the modifieds with all but one car, that being Vern Jackson, going topless. It was interesting to see these cars without their tops, and also allowed fans to get a glimpse at just how the drivers worked the wheels during a race. Jackson got the lucky re-draw, starting from the pole position, and led the early portion of the race. Two "Snyders" (not related) were able to get the top two spots away from Jackson. Jon Snyder, in the 69X machine, and Jason Snyder in the 98, battled back and forth for the lead. In the end, it was Jon Snyder, a track regular, who prevailed and took the $1,000-to-win over Jason Snyder. Third went to Adam Larson who came from deep in the field, fourth to Scott Simatovich, and fifth to Kellogg's David Brown with his best run of the year after starting back in 14th spot.
Yes, we ate dirt, and yes, the track was mighty slick and rubbered over, but we did see some really good racing. Many of the winners exclaimed in their post-race interviews, that they loved the track and wished it was like that all the time. Fans and drivers alike will have differing opinions on that subject.
The evening also saw the end of a long career of announcing for veteran Denny Grabenbauer. This night ended his twenty-three year run at the Marshalltown Speedway behind the mic.
He said his very first night began on a cold and windy April night back in 1987, and his final night ended on much the same note. Good luck to Denny in all his future endeavors. It won't be quite the same without hearing that familiar voice when the Marshalltown Speedway begins their new season of racing in 2010.
There is still racing to be found before it all ends for 2009. Check out the calendar of events on http://www.positivelyracing.com/ for a possible racing event to attend. Happy racing!

Duffy, Sather and Bonnett post back-to-back wins at the Havoc
Marshalltown Speedway's 3rd annual Havoc on the High Banks saw good car counts and the fans enjoyed good racing and great weather as well. Three drivers would visit victory lane two nights in a row as Darin Duffy, Kevin Sather and Bill Bonnett made clean sweeps.
Friday night the modified feature looked to be having track champion Jimmy Gustin adding another win to his season, but late in the feature while leading, he developed a problem in turn two. This slowed his momentum allowing Darin Duffy to take advantage of Gustin's misfortune and he slipped by and into the lead, maintaining it to the checkers. Max Corporon, coming off of a great run at the IMCA Super Nationals, came home in second, Scott Hogan was third, fourth went to Jon Snyder and rounding out the top five was Jay Schmidt. Duffy told announcer Denny Grabenbauer, this was his first ever win at the speedway. Duffy's luck would continue on Saturday night as he drew the pole starting position and led the entire race to post his second win at the track. Jimmy Gustin tried his best to catch him as he chased Duffy the entire race, but had to settle for second. Third place finisher, David Murray from Oberlin, Kansas, put on quite the show as he started 20th and made the slick, rubbered-over track work for him. Adam Larson came from 18th to garner fourth and Jon Snyder took fifth.
Another back-to-back winner for the weekend was Kevin Sather in the Northern SportMods. Friday, Sather started back in 13th spot to make his way up for the win. He passed leader Andy Tiernan who was second, third was Sather's cousin Austin Kaplan, fourth went to Jake Strayer and fifth was Brad Iverson. On Saturday, Sather was up for the challenge again as he started 11th. Roland, Iowa's Matt Lettow led the race until just a few laps remained and a caution flag flew. Sather, who had made his way up through the pack and into second, took that opportunity to get past Lettow after the restart and got his second win of the weekend. Making a great effort at the finish line to pass Lettow and take second, was Zack Rawlins. Lettow was third, fourth went to Kyle Brown who came from 15th and fifth went to Brad Iverson.
Friday's IMCA stock car feature saw a very familiar face in victory lane as Dustin Smith took the win; one of many he saw this season at Marshalltown. Steve Meyer chased Smith to the finish line to take second, third was Dusty Vis, Phil Holtz, driving the 56T of Justin Temeyer, was fourth, and fifth went to Marshalltown's own Jeff Wollam. The following night, Meyer upped his
Friday's finish by getting into the winner's circle. Meyer led the entire feature event as Damon Murty chased him for most of the laps. Third went to Friday's winner, Dustin Smith, fourth to Jeff Wollam and fifth to Kevin Rose.
The Dwarf/Mod Lites competed both nights of the Havoc as well. All of the young fans were happy to see Mike Morrill win on Friday night. They were all hoping to be the recipient of the trophy which Morrill always gives away, as he did once again, to a happy youngster. Second place went to Andy Hennigar, third to Randy Bryan, fourth to Dusty Masolini and fifth to Josh May.
Saturday's feature saw Hennigar and Morrill swap the finishing order. Andy Hennigar led from half-way to take the checkers as Morrill took second. Joel Huggins, an early leader, came home in third, fourth was Matthew Goodin, and fifth went to Mike Kennedy.
The IMCA hobby stocks saw Bill Bonnett, who had also never won at Marshalltown, take two wins in as many nights. He exclaimed in post-race interview, that he loved the smooth and fast track which provided three-wide racing during the feature event. Bonnett started back in 8th spot on Friday and pulled away after getting the lead. Pete Hutzel would follow in second but we understand that he was dq'd in tech, giving second place over to Kenny Loftus. Scored in third was Michael Murphy, fourth was Nick Murty and fifth was Todd Reitzler. Saturday's feature found Bonnett sitting on the pole and from there, he never looked back. Rob Allison in the 12A car finished second, third went to local Dustin Elliott, fourth to visiting Nebraska racer, Cory Cruzan, and fifth to Pete Hutzel.
The Karl's Chevrolet Dirt Trucks were an added attraction to the program on Saturday night. Bret Moyer took the feature win over his father Carl Moyer, third was Ed Nelson, fourth to KGGO's Lou Sipolt and fifth to Bryan Nevins, Jr.
One more race remains for the Marshalltown Speedway when on Sunday, September 27th, the modifieds will go "topless". All other regular classes will also be on the ticket as well as the Dirt Trucks. Racing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Check their website for further details at http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/. Happy racing!

The 27th Annual IMCA Super Nationals notes
The 2009 IMCA Super Nationals is in the books as it saw 816 cars compete (down slightly from the 2008 record car count of 825) over the six-day marathon of racing. What a change we have seen since the first running of the Super Nationals at Boone in 1988. That year saw Mark Noble win the modified feature, Steve Jackson take the stock car feature and Bob Hill win the Late Model. Two of those drivers; Noble and Jackson, were in competition this year. A check back into some of our records show a few others that were also on scene back then as well as this year; John Logue, Jeff Schroyer, and Chris Jensen all running in 1988 in the stock car class.
Since many of our fellow Positively Racing members were on hand for this year's races and have given their more in depth take on the races, we will attempt to merely note some of our observances during the six-day run.
This was the best weather straight through that we have ever experienced at any Super Nationals! It was nice to see 68-year old Larry Embrey make his way into the A main for the hobby stocks on Saturday night. Racing was completed shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday nights. We noticed far less wood chips in the racing surface this year than in years past. The "Flying Hall Brothers" made it an official Super Nationals again with their appearance. Garry was in his "vintage" red #75 as usual, but brother Larry was piloting a #2 "newer" (I use the term lightly) Dodge powered ride instead of his familiar yellow #55. It was amazing to watch Thursday night's A Main qualifier #2 as David Murray made his way from starting 19th of 20 cars. At three laps down, he was in 6th place, by 10 laps down he was 3rd and at 13 of 20 laps down, he was leading! Quite impressive and a thrill for the fans.
The #7S car of Todd Stinehart won his heat on Thursday night in a home-built car that his brother put together. "Outlaw" Jesse James Freelen in the #24F modified, is the mayor of Paris, Texas. Two of the youngest drivers in competition ran 1-2 in heat 26 on Thursday night as Nick Deal beat Nate Caruth to the checkers. Bad luck plagued multi-time Super National winner John Logue most of the week. He had mechanical problems while leading a heat by a huge margin and later dropped his transmission on the backstretch causing the car to jump up into the air. With all his bad luck, he was still able to qualify for the A Main on the final night.
Jeff Taylor in the #5X from Texas, had never seen Boone Speedway prior to his visit this year.
He made "The Big Dance" and finished second in the All-Star Race. Quite the accomplishment. Rich Smith from Davenport was racing again this year. He was a qualifier in the very first Super Nationals back in 1983 which was held in Vinton, Iowa. "It's not over until it's over" held true in the grand finale of the modified feature. Misfortune struck leader Jake Durbin near the end of the race when he spun. Leading the final few laps was Jay Noteboom as he appeared to have it in the bag. White flag flying, Noteboom's car developed mechanical problems and slowed. Going down the back chute, he is the "filling in the sandwich" as Randy Havlik and Craig Reetz pass him on either side with Havlik taking the checkers first. Drivers from more than 20 states competed throughout the Super Nationals and with the exception of the Deery Brothers Late Model winner Ray Guss, Jr. from Milan, Illinois and the Sprint Car winner, Shannon Eriksen from Lakeville, Minnesota, every "Big Dance" winner was from the state of Iowa.
We had a great time once again at "America's Racin' Vacation". We met new racing friends and racers. One in particular made a long journey from Farmington, New Mexico. We enjoyed meeting Regan Tafoya the driver of the #24R, his wife Yvette, and crew and occasional racer Tyrone Yazzie. With Tafoya being a barber back home, we loved the saying on the back of his car with the barber poles and "This could get hairy!!" Of course, we also enjoyed our time with racing family and friends, some of which we only see each year at the Super Nationals. It's nice to share the love of racing with those friends who share our passion.
With the racing season winding down, weekly shows are nearly closed. However, there are still specials to be found into October. Marshalltown Speedway will be racing this Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19 as they hold the 3rd annual Havoc on the Highbanks and on Sunday, September 27th, the IMCA modifieds will "go topless" for the Oktemberfest City Festival Race. Check http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/ for more details of each race. Happy racing!

Boone Speedway crowns track champions 9/5/09
Going into the evening, it appeared all current point leaders pretty much had their championship wound up, with one exception and that being in the modified class. Only four points separated point leader Cale Sponsler and Todd Shute. Sponsler had seen that championship slip by before.
All classes were brought to the front chute for out-of-car driver introductions, giving fans a chance to see the drivers they cheer on week after week. Only the hobby stocks would have to run two B mains to complete their twenty-four car starting field.
In the Dwarf/Mod Lite division, drivers were aligned by points...as they were in each class... with leader Andy Hennigar sitting on the pole. Hennigar jumped to the lead and never looked back as he took the win and the track championship for 2009. Mike Kenndy was second, Josh May was third, fourth went to Ed Zehm, and fifth was James May.
The Northern SportMod 20-lap feature went to point leader Scott Davis as Jeremy Embrey chased him the entire race to finish in second. Third across the line was Matthew Meinecke, fourth went to Geoff Olson, and rounding out the top five was Rick Ringgenberg.
Following a farming session, the hobby stock feature was up next. We noted the extra equipment that was already on hand in preparation of the many farming session to come during the Super Nationals. Point leader Michael Murphy had a twenty-one point lead going into the race. What was amazing to watch was the #81 of Devin Smith from Lake City as he made his way to the front from starting in the 14th spot. He picked his way through traffic very methodically to get into second position behind leader Murphy. A caution caused the pack to bunch up and with 11 laps down, Devin Smith drove around Murphy on the high-side and pulled away to take home the win. Following Smith and Murphy for third was Pat Mather, fourth went to Chris Hupp and fifth to Cody Gustoff.
The IMCA stock car feature saw another Smith brother take the win. Donavon Smith out distanced Trent Murphy with Murphy being crowned the track champion. Third went to Wayne Gifford, fourth to Bryan Trogon and fifth to Robert Stofer.
The final feature of the night was the yet to be determined championship for the modifieds. With only four points separating point leader Cale Sponsler and second in points, Todd Shute, it appeared Sponsler ran a conservative second place the entire 25-laps as he followed Shute to the checkers. Sponsler had captured that elusive track championship finally! Josh "Happy" Gilman finished in third, fourth was Adam Larson who had come from ninth place, and fifth went to Russ Dickerson.
The grounds were already filled with campers and race cars as they prepare for the upcoming 27th annual IMCA Super Nationals starting on Monday, September 7th. Many visiting drivers took advantage of hot lap sessions, giving fans a glimpse of who will be on hand. We noticed New Mexico driver Regan Tafoya, Colorado driver Ricky Alvarado and Californians, Rick and son Tim Ward, already at the speedway. Several local drivers were also sporting new sheet metal and paint schemes as they ready for the upcoming week ahead. We look forward to "America's Racin' Vacation" and will be there each and every night. Good luck to all the drivers who participate. Check http://www.imca.com/ for daily results. Last night's results are listed below.

Scott, Moffitt, and Rose grab wins at Boone
Is was more like chilly football weather than an August night of racing Saturday at the Boone Speedway. Fans were bundling up even before the sun went down and extra layers kept going on all night long. Thankfully, the good racing helped keep minds off of the breezy nip in the air. By my count, 161 cars were on hand to try their hand at the famed home of the IMCA Super Nationals.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature came to the track first after the usual mid-point farming session. Joel Huggins jumped to the lead right away...looking for another win to add to his recent string of victories. Dusty Masolini had other ideas as he took the lead away from Huggins, who would then have to be content to chase him the remaining laps. Dusty Masolini took the win, Huggins was runner-up, third went to James May, his son Josh May followed in fourth, and fifth was Andy Hennigar. Hennigar, the point-leader maintains a sizable lead going into season championships next week.
Rolling onto the track next, was the Northern SportMods for their 18-lap feature event. It took at least two complete restarts before the first lap was able to be scored as incidents happened on the track, bringing out the yellow. Joel Bushore was one of the cars that received significant damage and he was towed from the track; his night ended. When racing did get underway, pole sitter, Brett Moffitt took command of the top spot which he never relinquished. Moffitt took the win, Austin Lucas followed him across the finish line for second, Rick Ringgenberg crossed in third, fourth went to Iowa State student Geoff Olson who had started in eighth place, and rounding out the top five was point leader Scott Davis. Davis has an untouchable lead going into next week's season championship race.
All 26 IMCA modifieds started their A main. On hand were two Kansas drivers, David Murray who is IMCA's all-time win holder at over 400, and Jason Schoenberger from the Russell, Kansas area. Murray was not piloting his own machine, but the #23x of Matt Gilbertson from Minnesota. Schoenberger, who was the Super National's stock car winner several years back, was in his own 6X machine. Both drivers had raced the previous night at Marshalltown Speedway and we were anticipating that they would be in attendance at Boone as well. Also back from Moorsville, NC was James Allbee who piloted the 15J car last evening. We understand that Allbee works for one of the NASCAR teams in that area, having moved from Iowa a while back.
The modified feature yielded multiple yellow flags flying throughout their contest. In fact, the race was put under the time limit signal when it exceeded the one minute per lap rule. Jacob Murray led much of the race with JJ Scott in tow. Murray continued to lead with 11 laps down when the time limit rule was put into effect...meaning the race would be called over if another yellow flag flew. The cars were able to complete under the green flag, but with three laps to go, JJ Scott made the pass around Murray and Jake Durbin followed him to second place. Scott took the win, his first of the year at Boone, Durbin was second, Jacob Murray held on for third, fourth went to Kelly Lyons and fifth to Scott Baker. David Murray was scored in sixth place.
Unofficially, it looks as though Cale Sponsler took over the point lead by four points over Todd Shute, making for a down-to-the-wire championship contest next Saturday.
The Class too Tough to Tame, the IMCA stock cars were up next. Going into the night, Trent Murphy held a large lead in points and with an 11th place finish last night, his championship is not in jeopardy. Damon Murty sat on the pole and took off like a rocket and stretched his lead.
Battling for second and third behind him, were Ryan Rose and Josh Brauckman. Mike VanGenderen in his yellow 57V ride for the night, was keeping in the hunt as he did battle with Chris Webb and Donavon Smith. With just two laps to go, Murty would exit the track handing over the lead to Ryan Rose. Rose went on to take the win, Donavon Smith advanced to second, Brauckman was third, fourth was The Flying Dutchman, Mike VanGenderen, and Bill Reetz advanced to fifth in the late laps.
Two hobby stock features remained. In the first feature, Pat Mather would repeat a win from last week. He made his way to the winner's circle from starting back in tenth starting spot when he took over the lead with five laps to go. He passed Richard Yaw II who held on for second, Joe Myer worked his way up to finish third, fourth went to Michael Murphy the continuing point leader, and fifth went to Matt Drottz.
The night-ending second hobby stock feature was led early by veteran driver Donnie Gustoff.
At four laps down, Scott Lograsso and Daniel Hilsabeck were both able to get around Gustoff.
Gustoff would fall back several positions as Chris Hupp made his way into third, When the final checkers of the night flew, Lograsso came home to the win, Hilsabeck was second, Hupp in third, fourth went to Leonard Loftus and Alan VanGorp was fifth.
Hard to believe that next week is the season championship, thus ending the regular season racing at Boone Speedway. Then, on Monday, September 7, begins the Speedway Motors IMCA Super Nationals. Racing will begin each day this year at 3 p.m. and a slightly different format will prevail for modified qualifying with 30 heats and the top two going to one of three A qualifiers. We look forward to this event every year as we have since 1988. We are hoping for great weather and know we will see great racing. For more complete details on the Super Nationals, check the IMCA website at http://www.imca.com/ and the Boone Speedway site at http://www.raceboone.com/. Happy racing!

Ladehoff repeats at Marshalltown and Kansas drivers test the waters
When it continued to rain and rain on Wednesday and Thursday..with inches and inches accumulating, the doubt was once again put in our minds about Marshalltown racing on Friday. Dreary and overcast skies greeted us on Friday morning, but by early afternoon, the sun was shining. Promoter Toby Kruse indicated that more than 5 inches of rain had fallen earlier in the week, but he was confident that Friday night would see racing at the Marshalltown Speedway.
The track was worked for hours and hours on Friday and then around 5:15 p.m., according to announcer Denny Grabenbauer, the water truck was called into action. Fans were treated to another great night of racing at the highbanks of Marshalltown and Mother Nature was defeated again.
Nostalgia cars were on hand and ran their feature first. It's always fun to see those "cars of yesteryear" on a track once again. Jim Clayton in the #66 Mercury Cyclone took the feature win over the #00 of John Schroyer. Third was the #5 driven by I believe, a Graybel.
For the fifth time this year, Joel Huggins visited Victory Lane in his #X50 Dwarf/Mod Lite car. He was chased early by Johnny Mordock and Josh May, however point leader Mike Morrill would come from 10th starting spot of the eleven cars starting, to take the runner-up position as the checkers flew. Mordock held on for third, Josh May was fourth, and his dad James May, rounded out the top five.
The Northern SportMods at the end of the night, would see a new point leader. Kevin Sather captured the win and took over that point lead when Scott Davis spun while in fifth position, recovered and still managed to finish tenth. Unofficially, it appears Sather now leads by four points over Davis making for a down-to-the-wire season championship feature next week.
Sather came through the field to grab the win as cousin Austin Kaplan chased him to the finish line. Jake Strayer had a good run and finished third, Brad Iverson was fourth, and the green-machine of Neil Follett was fifth.
The IMCA stock car feature went flag to flag as all eighteen cars started the A main event. It was two Smith brothers that put the show on for the lead with David Smith in the #8X leading for many of the laps with brother Dustin, point leader at the track, chasing him. Dustin was able to get under David on the backstretch with a few laps remaining, to take the number one spot as he went on to the win. With David Smith in second, third went to Jeff Wollam who had charged through the field with a great run. Fourth went to Dusty Vis and fifth to Damon Murty who had started eighth and ninth respectively. It was announced there was a claim after the feature with the #22K of Kevin Rose claiming Dustin Smith. We understood later, that it was only the shocks that were claimed, but this is unofficial.
The A main for the modifieds, saw the dust flying and with the wind from the north, us fans felt the true meaning of "dirt" track racing. Visitors for the night from Kansas, were David Murray (all time win leader in IMCA racing and who broke the record of the Keokuk, Iowa driver from the '50's and '60's, Ernie Derr) and Jason Schoenberger, the Super Nationals stock car champion from a couple of years back. Schoenberger would be piloting his own #6 modified, while Murray was not in his familiar #97M ride, but in the #23 of Matt Gilbertson from Minnesota. Last week's winner, Brett Ladehoff put his new Dirtworks ride up front early and raced his line consistently even though that visitor from Kansas, David Murray was coming fast. Murray would be able to position himself in second place...coming from starting twelfth, but Ladehoff skillfully maintained that lead on the slick track, to take back-to-back wins. Murray was runner-up, Jimmy Gustin wound through traffic to take third, fourth went to Adam Larson with a great run, and fifth was Jon Snyder who came from near the back of the starting field of nineteen. Ladehoff was excited in Victory Lane after his consecutive wins. David Murray congratulated him on a fine run, exclaiming how it's nice to see new young talent like Ladehoff in the modified ranks.
The night-ending feature was the IMCA hobby stock division. All night long, turn number two had grabbed cars right and left, sending them into spin after spin. This would continue in this main event as well. Todd Reitzler put his car up front early and though he had pressure from both Michael Murphy and Terry Shaffar, he was able to keep the lead and come home to the checkers first. Terry Shaffar was second at the finish line, third was Michael Murphy, fourth went to Devin Smith, anf fifth was "Pistol Pete" Hutzel. Going into next week's season championship night, unofficially it appears that Devin Smith holds a slim 3 point lead over Murphy, which will also make for another interesting season-ending feature event.
This coming Tuesday night, September 1, Marshalltown Speedway will be hosting the rescheduled Deery Brothers Late Model series with races starting at 7 p.m. Also on tap will be the Dirt Trucks, SportMods, and Dwarf/Mod Lites. Then on Friday night, September 4th, the season championship will be held. It was announced that there will be the traditional out-of-car introductions on the frontstretch and an added attraction at the end of the night will be an Australian pursuit contest in each class.
The season is winding down fast but there is still plenty of racing events to be seen, including the IMCA Super Nationals coming up Labor Day week at Boone. Make plans to attend a race before the season is gone. Happy racing!

Double features at Boone gives fans extra racing action
Saturday at Boone, feature action began early with make-up features in every class. Even with an earlier than usual start time by half an hour, it was a long night of racing with close to 180 cars checked in. It appeared drivers are starting to gear up for Supernationals and wanting to test the waters before "America's Racing Vacation" starts.
The first make-up feature to hit the track right at 7 p.m., was the first of two hobby stock A's. Travis Fenton got to the front early from starting in fifth, and from then on there was no denying him a win. Fenton took the win followed by Alan VanGorp, Daniel Hilsabeck, Dylan Book and Beau Kaplan.
Hobby make-up feature #2, was led early by the J4 of John Yaw, Sr. but moving up from starting back in 10th, Pat Mather got himself positioned in the runner-up spot. On a restart, Mather made the pass into first and following him was Cody Gustoff and Michael Murphy. Murphy would have problems and have to exit the track giving third to Rob Allison. When the checkers flew, it was Mather taking the win, Cody Gustoff in second, third to Rob Allison, Yaw would hang on for fourth, and rounding out the top five was Chris Hupp.
In the Dwarf/Mod Lite make-up feature, it was appearing that a hot driver of late, Joel Huggins was on his way to another feature win as he was leading through half-way. Creston driver Johnny Mordock had other ideas, as he made the pass for the lead and went home for the win.
Huggins settled for second, third went to Josh May, fourth to Jeff Stensland and fifth to Matthew Goodin.
Twenty-four SportMods were scheduled to take the green flag for their make-up feature from last week's rain out. However, only 19 cars made the call. We noted that several cars were missing in the make-up features as "travelers" from last week did not return. Outside front-row starter Cody Warrick took the point position early and from there on, he sailed home to a win.
Scott Davis was charging hard through the pack and managed to get into the runner-up spot. Former hobby stock driver, Randy Roberts garnered third, fourth went to pole-starter
Matt Deml from Owatonna, Minnesota, and fifth was veteran racer Rick Ringgenberg.
The IMCA modified class started 19 cars for the make-up feature. Denny Pittman was able to move to the pole starting spot as designated pole position Stacy Warren opted to drop to the back. Pittman, from Jamacia, Iowa, cashed in as he led flag to flag for his first win of the season.
Bill Davis, Jr. earned the runner-up spot and he was followed by Todd Shute in third. Fourth went to Mike Molle and fifth to Cale Sponsler.
The "Class too Tough to Tame", the IMCA stock cars completed the make-up features for the night. With 28 cars slated to take the starting flag, only 23 would start. One of those cars not returning, was the 59 car of Larry Portis from Nora Springs, Iowa. Larry was involved in a car accident the past week and suffered some rather serious injuries, ending his racing for the season. We wish long-time racer Larry Portis, a full and speedy recovery. Ryan Rose led from the pole as Bryan Snell chased him for several circuits. Newton driver, "The Flying Dutchman" Mike VanGenderen was putting pressure on the two front runners and was able to get by both Snell and leader Ryan Rose to take over the point with five laps to go. It was smooth sailing then for VanGenderen in his bright green and white machine, as he took the win. Trent Murphy made his way into the runner-up position from starting ninth, Rose held on for third, fourth went to Jerry Gifford and fifth went to Bryan Snell.
There was a quick farming session before the regular night of racing brought the first heat of hobby stocks to the surface. We noticed that there was an abundance of visiting drivers on hand; some in all classes, as they tested the waters for the upcoming Supernationals. Two B-mains were run--one in the SportMods and one in the stock cars. When the first regular night's feature pulled onto the track, it was after 11 p.m. with lots of action yet to be seen.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature saw a reversal in the final outcome from the make-up feature.
Joel Huggins got the win this time, with Johnny Mordock as runner-up. James May finished in third, Mike Kennedy was fourth and fifth was Ed Zehm who had started back in 10th. I believe this was Huggin's fourth win at Boone in 2009. He has been on a hot streak lately as he won the previous night in Marshalltown where he has earned multiple wins as well.
The Northern SportMods had a bit of trouble even getting their race started as the yellow flew more than once before even one lap was completed. Kent Croskey in the 12c car led early but Boone's Scott Davis was coming quickly to the front. Davis was able to get the lead and would then pull away from Croskey. Later Croskey would exit the contest putting Matthew Meinecke in second place and Northwood, Iowa driver Dan Tenold came from 12th to take over third. At the finish line, Scott Davis was the winner, second was Meinecke, third to Tenold, fourth to Joel Bushore and fifth to make-up feature winner, Cody Warrick.
In the second feature of the night for the IMCA modifieds, it was noted by announcer Bill Hagland, that there were ten previous winners running in the main event. If I recall correctly, those drivers were Denny Pittman (he won the first feature of the night), Skeeter Paris, John Logue, Kelly Lyons, Robert Avery, Todd Shute, Adam Larson, Cale Sponsler, Bill Davis, Jr., and Mike Molle. Would there be a new winner in this feature for the 2009 season? Tonight, it wasn't to be, as Skeeter Paris won for the second time this year. The 48J of Jacob Murray was right behind Paris for the final few laps. Paris would bobble slightly but would recover before Murray could take advantage, as he took the win. Murray was second, and third went to Jammin' Jimmy Gustin from Marshalltown, who had started back in ninth. John Logue proved again what a fantastic racer he is on his hometown track as he finished fourth with a spectacular performance from starting way back in 21st spot. Rounding out the top five was Madrid, Iowa driver, Craig Carlson who was among the top runners all race.
The IMCA stock car feature found cars running three and four wide providing for some exciting action for the fans. During the contest, tight racing was seen between the top running five cars as Wayne Gifford, Jerry Gifford, Mike VanGenderen, Trent Murphy and Josh Brauckman jockeyed for position. With a restart with twelve laps down, brothers Wayne and Jerry Gifford held down 1st and 2nd with Jerry having the advantage. At the checkered flag, Wayne would take the win over brother Jerry, third went to Trent Murpy, fourth to Bryan Trogdon who had started along side Murphy back in 11th starting position, and fifth was Josh Brauckman and sixth went to VanGenderen.
The first of two hobby stock features had 28 cars take the green flag. Chris Hupp led nearly the entire race and came home the winner. Todd Reitzler had a fine run to take second, third went to veteran Randy Embrey who had made his first appearance of the season last week, fourth to Michael Murphy and fifth to Daniel Hilsabeck.
The final feature of the night, the second hobby stock feature ended with Alan VanGorp back in victory lane. He got to the lead early and never looked back. Aaron Rudolph chased him across the finish line for second, third was make-up feature winner Pat Mather, fourth went to Beau Kaplan and fifth was Scott Lograsso.
Racing ended just shortly before 1 a.m. with lots of racing action having been seen over the course of the evening/early morning hours. As I posted the results (see below) in the wee hours of the morning and crawled into bed a bit after 4 a.m., I apologize for not getting this blog written sooner. It makes for a bit more thinking and trying to recall some happenings, but hope it's not too far off!
The 27th Annual IMCA/Speedway Motors Supernationals are fast approaching. We can say we have attended every running since 1988. We have seen many changes over the years as it has grown to the show or "happening" as we often call it, that it is now. I try to catch every race and can hardly bring myself to miss a minute of the action. Make plans to attend at least some of this must-see event that will be held September 7th-12th. Happy racing!!

Ladehoff snares modified payday at Marshalltown
It was Friday and the weather was putting a question into many people's minds again if the show at Marshalltown Speedway was going to be able to run. With showers and overcast skies lasting in our area well past noon, we were also having our doubts. Thankfully, it cleared earlier at Marshalltown and with the sun shining and the winds brisk, the track dried beautifully. It also produced two-three wide racing all night long. Fun for the drivers and for the fans. The evening felt more like a crisp fall night, but the racing was hot. The program brought a first time ever winner, a first for the year winner, and several repeat winners.
A nostalgia class saw eight "cars of yesteryear" put on a contest that brought back memories of years gone by. The winner of that race was Wade Russell who had first raced at the Marshalltown track back in 1986 in a late model class. His ride for the night was a 1940 Ford with a Chevy heartbeat.
The Dwarf/Mod Lites ran their feature next with winner Joel Huggins leading nearly the whole race. Huggins captured his 4th feature win of the season as he outpaced a rapidly approaching Tim Hennigar who had started dead last. Hennigar finished in the runner-up position ahead of Randy Bryan in third, Josh May in fourth and Johnny Mordock in fifth.
The IMCA Northern SportMods was won by Kevin Sather for the 9th time this season. Sather made his way to the front from well back in the field to score another win. Kyle Brown in the #21 led with five laps to go but Sather would make the pass a lap or two later after restarts, to seal the win. Brown had to settle for the runner-up spot, Scott Davis followed Sather through the pack to take third position, fourth was Brad Iverson and fifth went to Jake Strayer.
Twenty-three IMCA stock cars were on hand and all started their feature race. Rob Schneider put his 17s machine to the point early on and he would lead the rest of the way, scoring his first ever career win. Jeff Wollam made his way through the field to take the runner-up spot at the checkers. Dusty Vis scored third, fourth went to visiting driver Aaron Haggerty (who had spun earlier and had to tag the tail) and fifth and sixth went to Dustin Smith and Damon Murty, though I am not certain how they were scored. Murty was piloting Jay Schmidt's stock car for the night. Schneider said in victory circle that he had just tried to maintain his chosen high line though he knew cars were running close in lower lines. It paid off and he now has that first elusive win under his belt. Congratulations to Rob Schneider on his first win.
The modifieds were running for a $500 payoff plus a huge trophy on Custom Concrete night at the track. Brett Ladehoff and Kyle Krampe sat on the front row for the start with Ladehoff quickly getting the lead. Jay Schmidt had Ladehoff in his sights but the lead would stretch for the 12X even after restarts. Meanwhile, point leader Jimmy Gustin was battling for position with Schmidt and Adam Larson and was successful in taking over second. When the double checkers flew, Ladehoff snagged his first feature win of the year and Gustin settled for second. Third went to Adam Larson, fourth to Jay Schmidt and fifth to Ronn Lauritzen. Ladehoff was a happy camper in Victory Lane and was pleased with the performance of his newly acquired DirtWorks chassis ride.
The IMCA hobby stock feature saw the 27 of Clint Nelson lead the race from his pole starting position until lap nine when Michael Murphy made his way into the lead. Nelson would fall back a couple of positions as hard chargers, Todd Reitzler and Terry Shaffar battled past him. Taking the win for the second time this season was Michael Murphy, Terry Shaffar was second followed by Todd Reitzler in third, Clint Nelson held on for a fourth place finish, and fifth went to Jennifer Hulin.
A King of the Hill contest for the Dwarf/Mod-Lites capped the evening. Johnny Mordock outlasted Joel Huggins, Mike Morrill bested Josh May and Dusty Masolini beat Eric Hendrickson. In round two Mordock went up against Morrill and Morrill took the checkers. The championship round pitted Morrill against Masolini and Morrill would "take the crown" as the king of the event.
Next week see another regular season event at the speedway which will include another round of cars from the past with nostalgia racers bringing their '50-'60's cars to the track. Make plans to attend another exciting night at the Marshalltown Speedway. Happy racing.

Iowa State Fair--Good Times and Good Racing
Our tradition continued this past Tuesday evening, when we attending yet another race event at the Iowa State Fair. There was a nice crowd filling the huge grandstands and the pits were filled with over 160 cars. It's always a pretty sight to see the cars on the track, with the colorful midway lights shining off of turn one...something that hasn't changed for us in years and years.
A brief recap of the night follows, but be sure and catch Ryan Clark's "In Staging" and Kevin's "Tapfan's Tours" on Positively Racing for a more in dept take of the races.
First feature to hit the track was the two hobby stock features. The first half of the race was led by the #19 car driven by Steve Jones, and he was chased by Daniel Hilsabeck. With one lap to go, a hard charging #99JR of Nick Murty managed to get around Jones as did Hilsabeck...an exciting finish at the line! When the first checkered flag flew, it was Nick Murty taking the win, Hilsabeck in second, Jones fell to third, fourth went to Matt Drottz with a good run, and fifth was Kenny Loftus.
The second hobby stock feature was won by Kris Walker who I believe has been a winner at the State Fair race before. Kenny Hansen was runner-up, Rob Allison was third, fourth went to Beau Kaplan and rounding out the top five was Alan VanGorp. I scored the 2N of Donavan Nunnikhoven in second, but have heard that he was later dq'd for an infraction of the rules.
Kevin Sather won and made it look easy as he cruised to the IMCA SportMod checkers. Crossing in second was Jesse Sobbing, third was Dalton Dingman, fourth to Rick Gladson and fifth was Bryon Weyer. Earlier, in a scary incident, Kevin Fee was on the worst end of a racing incident involving lap-traffic. He flipped several times on the front stretch before coming to a stop in front of the stage. Thankfully, he was fine, but the car appeared to sustain a great deal of damage.
The IMCA stock cars brought an exciting and intense race to the fans. Front row sitters, Josh Daniels and Steve Jackson drew the lucky pills for their starting spots. Jackson took the lead early but he certainly had company as behind him Donnie Bown, Donavon Smith, brother Dustin Smith, and Damon Murty were putting up the good fight. Donavon Smith seemed to prefer the low-line of the track as Jackson kept his machine higher. That low line paid off as the cars came to the final circuit out of turn four, and Smith was able to get by Jackson for the win. This race saw many battles behind the leaders as they swapped positions many times. Behind the top two finishers, third place would go to Donnie Bown, fourth to Dustin Smith and Justin Temeyer who traveled from the eastern part of Iowa, was fifth.
Bryan Nevins led the Dirt Truck feature until Ed Nelson was able to make the pass on the backstretch. Brett Moyer made the pass on Nelson only to be relegated to second after a caution came out. After the restart, it took little time until Moyer did take over the first position which he held until the finish. Ed Nelson held on for second, third went to Bob Murray, fourth to Brad Moyer in the #21, and Bryan Nevins finished in fifth.
The IMCA Deery Brothers 35-lap feature race was a fitting finish to the evening. Todd Cooney redrew lucky #1 and with his experience on the famed Iowa State Fair Speedway, many were thinking it might be a walk-away win for him. Other drivers, had other ideas. Ray Guss, Jr. driving the #58 of Herschel Roberts, raced into the lead and was putting some distance between himself and second place Cooney. Point leader, Jeff Aikey quickly made his presence known as he advanced from starting around the seventh starting spot and soon found himself in second.
Aikey showed why he is the Deery Brothers point leader as he took that number one spot and came home the winner again. Ray Guss, Jr. took the runner-up spot, third went to Jay Johnson, fourth to Tommy Elston and fifth was Jason Frankel.
With Mother Nature not cooperating very well for racing on this day, we will turn our hopes for better racing weather come the weekend. Marshalltown Speedway has had to scrap their Deery Brothers IMCA late model race for tonight due to the rain and it will be made up on September 1. The Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa has also called off their regular night of racing tonight due to wet grounds. Let's all hope for some drier weather. Happy racing!
