Larson wins in modifieds at Marshalltown

It was a WINDY night at the Marshalltown Speedway but it was DRY and for the first time since April 8th, the show went on.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite's were the first on the docket to run their A main event. Fifteen laps later, it was the familiar #99 of Josh May taking the checkers. May took the Frostbuster back on April 1st, and was back in Victory Lane tonight. Mike Morrill chased May most of the race and though he was trying to reel him in, it just wasn't in the cards for this night and Morrill had to settle for second. Third went to Joel Huggins, fourth to Andy Hennigar and rounding out the top five was Randy Bryan.

The IMCA Northern SportMods were the only class requiring a consy race to fill in their starting 24-car feature. That B main was won by Kyle Brown. By the halfway mark of the 15-lap feature, Newton driver, Jake Strayer was in command with Racer Hulin trailing him. Joel Rust would slip by Hulin before the checkers, with Strayer taking the win, Rust in second, Hulin in third, Oskaloosa driver Cayden Carter in fourth, and fifth was Austin Lucas. Kyle Brown came from qualifying through the B, to take the sixth spot.

The dust pretty well settled by the end of the SportMod feature, leaving the stock cars with a clearer view around the track. Jay Schmidt rocketed to the lead from the front row starting spot and was looking to dominate. However, a slip off the topside later when he was doing battle with Steve Meyer and Trent Murphy, ended that quest. He did recover and re-entered the track but lost many positions. The race was then between Murphy and Meyer with Murphy running the low-line and Meyer trying the outside. The race would conclude with a green-white-checkered finish due to a spinning car and Murphy came home with the win, pulling away a bit from the #94 of Meyer. Following Meyer who took second, was Tracy Gienger for third, Damon Murty in fourth and fifth went to "The Pink Panther" (the character is on his car...as well as pink on the car) Michael Jaennette. Jaennette has been campaigning for donations to help out a Garwin family who recently lost their home in a fire and who are race fans. We had seen a clip on television station KCCI. It's always nice to hear some good publicity about the racing community and our hats are off to Jaennette for this good deed.

The IMCA modified feature saw an impressive run by the 2L of Adam Larson. Larson started 14th on the field and as he exclaimed in Victory Lane, "when you can pass the likes of Jimmy and Richie Gustin, it's a good night and the car is running right". Larson chose the low-line of the track and Gustin was liking the high-line but Larson prevailed to take the win. Jimmy Gustin had to be content for second, and Richie Gustin, third. Fourth was Todd Conrad who had done battle with all three, and Jon Snyder took fifth.

The night drew to a conclusion with the running of the IMCA hobby stock 12-lap feature. The battle was between Michael Vibbard, Eric Knutson and Michael Murphy for most of the race. In the end, it would be Eric Knutson winning the hard-fought contest and taking the win over Michael Murphy in second. Vibbard followed Murphy to take the third spot, fourth went to Kevin Fee who had been the winner in the Frostbuster and the opening regular season night, and fifth went to the #3 of Matt Hudspeth. It was a wild conclusion at the finish line with cars going every which way, so after fifth place, it was a free-for-all.

Racing concluded a bit before 10 p.m. Fans were more comfortable this week with temperatures warmer, though not WARM by any means. We were buffeted a lot by the strong winds, but luckily for us, they were coming from behind the grandstands. For the full results, check www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Racing resumes next week at the high banked 1/4-mile track, with racing scheduled to commence at 7:30. Happy racing!

Quality and quantity at Boone

Saturday night saw the Boone Speedway with a packed pit area of 223 cars. Wet and cold weather during the past week made for many cancellations around the state, but with the great "farming" prep and the drainage at Boone, the track was ready to go. Many tracks have not been able to get even their season opener in. With that being said, drivers appeared to flock to Boone to get in some racing. We noticed many cars from the Sioux City area in attendance as well as several drivers that are regulars at the Beatrice Speedway in Beatrice, Nebraska.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite saw 29 cars check through the pit gate. Twenty-seven of those cars started their A main event. Charlie Brown took command of the race from the start, and took his first win of the season at Boone. Behind Brown, it was Joel Huggins and Andy Hennigar fighting for position but Josh May would get in the mix from his sixth row starting spot to make it past both drivers and take the runner up spot. Following May to grab third was Joel Huggins, Andy Hennigar was fourth, and fifth went to Cory Dennis. For those of you who are a bit "clown-shy", you may want to avoid looking at the clowns that winner Charlie Brown has on the side of his ride.....rather spooky to some!

The IMCA Northern SportMods had an unbelievable 62 cars in the pits. This has been the fastest growing class the last couple of years, and it appears it is not slowing down. Three B mains were called for with David Schlicht, Brandon Leeman and Scott Davis taking those wins.

The SportMod feature found Adam Shelman at the helm through lap eleven of the 18-lap race. Meanwhile, it was the #21 of Kyle Brown, who had started back in 16th position, making a lot of headway. By lap fourteen, it was Cedar Rapids, Iowa driver Austin Lucas to the point and Brown was hot on his tail. Brown was able to make the pass with two laps remaining, and then a yellow flag halted the field. Brown took command at the restart and went home to the checkers for his first win at the Boone track. Lucas took the runner up spot, third went to Nick Roberts, fourth to Joel Rust, fifth to Jesse Sobbing and Shelman fell back to finish in sixth.

Up next was the IMCA modified feature. Thirty-nine cars were on hand, requiring two B mains to whittle their starting field to twenty-four cars for the feature. Those wins were taken by Dustin Smith and Mike VanGenderen. We had heard Smith was going to be making the leap from the stock car class into the modifieds, but this was the first time we had seen him in his modified in 2011.

The early fight for the top spots was among Jake Durbin, Randy Havlik, Todd Shute and Josh Most. Durbin's night would end when he dropped fluid on the track with an apparent blown motor. Josh Most and Todd Shute would then battle for the lead spot after racing resumed, with Most running the low line and Shute taking the top side.
With one lap to go, Most gave it a shot for the lead, only to spin, ending any chance for the win. Shute would then take his first win in a while at the Boone Speedway and Jacob Murray would finish a distant second. Russ Dickerson took the third spot, fourth went to Cale Sponsler and fifth went to visitor Jeremy Mills from Garner, Iowa.

A whopping 45 stock cars were on hand Saturday night. This brought about two consolation races and those were won by Ned Kalis out of Wells, Minnesota and Tama, Iowa's Jay Schmidt. A three-wide battle ensued with Eric Brown, Josh Brauckman and Michael Jaennette. Jaennette won that battle, and took over the lead while the other cars fell back. It was then Robert Stofer and Donavon Smith giving chase but they were not able to catch Jaennette who took the win. Smith finished in second, Stofer in third, Jay Schmidt came out of a B qualifier to capture fourth, and fifth went to David Smith from Lake City, brother of Donavon. We usually see David Smith in a #8 car, but on this night he was piloting the #68 which looked to be the car formerly driven by Josh Hohensee out of Pocohontas, Iowa during the 2010 campaign.

Forty-eight hobby stocks came to run. Those were split into two A mains and ALL of those cars made the call for each of their feature event. The first main found Michael Murphy back in Victory Lane for a third straight week. Murphy was followed past the checkers by a limping #59 of Hans Houfek, Emmerson, Nebraska driver, who suffered with a tire going down on the last lap, third was John Watson, fourth was Curt Reed and fifth went to Kyle Dirks in the #00 car.

Completing the night's racing was the second A main for the IMCA hobby stocks. It was pretty much a done deal from the get-go as Devin Smith took the win after leading from the start and pulling away. Boone driver, Tony Cox would follow Smith to take second, third went to Ray Stock, Jr. out of Ankeny, fourth to Eric Stanton and rounding out the top five was veteran driver, Donnie Gustoff.

It was a late night with so many cars, but what a field as there was both quality and quantity making for great racing for the fans. Many top notch drivers in their class, did not even qualify for their A main. Hopefully, the weather will soon be turning warmer and drier for more comfortable spectating for fans.

"Springtime" racing in Boone

Yes, it's Spring, but the weather sure didn't feel like it in Boone this past Saturday night. The wind was very brisk from the northwest, making it uncomfortable for the grandstand viewers. The hearty fans on hand were all bundled up to see the racing. A good car count was on hand with cars pulling from different parts of Iowa as well as a couple of Missouri cars. To our knowledge, Boone was the only show in the state of Iowa on Saturday.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite's had a full field of 24 cars with 22 making the feature start. Colby Oberembt made an immediate exit from the contest, pulling to the infield upon the start. Andy Hennigar put his #15 to the front with just a handful of laps in the books, and would never look back. He put some distance between himself and second place runner, Charlie Brown and Randy Bryan was in third. Bryan had worked himself through the pack from starting seventeenth as the race was winding down. At the finish line, Hennigar took the win with Randy Bryan taking the runner up spot after Charlie Brown dropped out on the final lap. Third went to James May, fourth was Angelo Montgomery and Josh May took the fifth spot.

The IMCA Northern SportMods brought 41 cars to the pits. Two B mains were needed to complete the 24-car starting field for their A main. Scott VanBuskirk and Nick Roberts would triumph in those consolation races. The 18-lap event's action was halted time and time again as the yellow caution flag flew. David Schlicht and Cory Rose fought for the number one spot early with Eric Elliott and Scott Davis coming fast behind them as well as southwestern Iowa driver, Jesse Sobbing in his #99 ride. Elliott grabbed the lead from Rose with four laps to go and although he developed a big push in turn two, he was able to gather the car under him and keep that top spot to the finish line and take his first win of the season. Scott Davis came home in second place, Rose was third, fourth went to David Schlicht and Beau Kaplan came from seventeenth, to take the fifth place. Sobbing had a flat tire on the final lap and dropped back to finish out of the top ten.

The IMCA stock cars always put on a great show in our opinion, and Saturday night's race was one of those. At times there were six or seven car packs battling up front and running three-wide. Ryan Rose led Robert Stofer and Jerry Gifford for the lead by lap five but it was a determined Alan VanGorp that skillfully raced his way to the point by lap nine. After taking the lead, VanGorp was putting distance between himself and the pack battling behind him. At the finish line, VanGorp would be the victor with the familiar #35 of Donavon Smith taking second and close behind him in third, was Jay Schmidt, who came from the twelveth starting spot. Jerry Gifford and Ryan Rose finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Thirty IMCA modifieds entered the grounds at Boone which called for a B main qualify race for their class. Onawa, Iowa driver Matt Bonine took that contest, making him starting nineteenth in the feature event. Josh "Happy" Gilman took command of the lead by lap six of the 20-lap race with pole-sitter Craig Carlson and Jake Durbin chasing him. Durbin would cause the racing action to halt when he dropped fluid down the frontstretch, which ended his night at lap eight. No stranger to the Boone Speedway, Jimmy Gustin was right behind Gilman shortly after racing resummed. Russ Dickerson and Matt Bonine were in hot pursuit of the front runners as well. Gilman took the win with Gustin close behind in second. Third place went to Matt Bonine who qualified through the B main, fourth to Josh Most, Red Oak, Iowa driver (who seems to be at every race we've been to in 2011) and fifth was Russ Dickerson.

With 44 cars checking in for the IMCA hobby stock class, this would call for two A main events. In the first contest of a 22-car field, it was no easy going as yellows plagued this race. Veteran Boone driver, Dean Hartwig was hungry for a win and put his car to the point early on from starting in fourth spot. It was a close battle between Hartwig and Des Moines driver, Richard Yaw II as they challenged each other to the finish line. Hartwig was the one to see the checkers first and Yaw had to settle for the bridemaid's spot. Jeremy Auten pulled up from Clarinda in southwestern Iowa, to come home in third place from starting back in fourteenth spot. Calvin Dhondt finished in fourth and fifth went to Chris Hupp.

The second feature for the hobby stocks, ended the night's entertainment. By this time, the sparse crowd that had been huddled and hunkered down, had dwindled to just a few dedicated fans. Local driver, Tony Cox, put the 1BC ride in the lead and led through the half-way mark. With only two laps remaining, it was Michael Murphy, last week's winner, taking over the lead and going home to the win; making it two in a row for the Jefferson, Iowa driver. Second went to Eric Stanton who had started along side Murphy back in row five, and finishing in third place was Cody Nielsen out of Ft. Dodge. Rounding out the top five was Nyle Godwin in fourth and Tony Cox in fifth.

The races drew to an end about 11:45 p.m. and according to a "weather report" we received, it was right at 35 degrees, with a wind chill of 28. More than a bit nippy for racing in April. Let's hope we have warmer weather setting in to stay for upcoming racing. Racing will continue at Boone next Saturday night. For more information check www.raceboone.com. Many tracks have already opened their season with more opening soon as well as some special events. Check out the calendar at www.positivelyracing.com for a race to attend and support the racing we all love. Until next time, happy racing!

Boone Speedway gets regular season started

The Boone Speedway had their regular season opener this past Saturday night. It was also a familiar occurrence to watch developing storms just skirt the area leaving the facility without a drop of rain and only a lightshow to the north. We have seen this happen over and over again at Boone Speedway.

All five classes competed for points with the Dwarf/Mod Lites up first on the track for their feature. Josh May made it look easy as he picked up the win after leading the entire event. He is no stranger to Victory Lane having won numerous times last year. Following him for second was David Schmalzried, third went to Jeff Stensland, fourth to Bryan Zehm in the 46Z car (I must remember this car, as the number was a bit difficult to read from the grandstands)and fifth was James May, father of winner Josh May.

The Northern SportMods had a field of 45 cars on hand which required the running of two B main events to get their feature pared down to 24 cars. Eric Elliott and Nick Roberts won those two contests. Randy Roberts pretty much dominated the 18-lap race as he pulled away from the competition and took the win. Clint Luellen finished a distance behind Roberts to take the runner-up position and he was followed by a visitor from Wisconsin, Troy Jerovetz who was third. Fourth went to hometown driver, Scott Davis and Kyle Brown from Kellogg, Iowa rounded out the top five. The race went caution free.

The IMCA modifieds saw all 23 cars on hand start their A main feature. Luke Wanninger was the man in charge early on but would slip back to fifth place and on lap 16, his car would jump the berm in turn two, pirouette on its nose, and come down hard on his top. Wanninger was okay, but it appeared his car sustained some major damage. As action resumed with just four laps to go, Cale Sponsler led the pack with several cars hot on his heels and challenging. Sponsler was able to hold off those challenges, and take the win. Todd Shute, Jimmy Gustin and Justin Sackett finished a close second, third and fourth, in that order. Rounding out the top five was Russ Dickerson.

The IMCA stock cars had a nice car count of 31 cars requiring a B main. That B main was won by Alan VanGorp in the 19A car. Eric Brown in the 24 car, back after several year's absence, led that first lap and was looking strong, only to have mechanical problems and exit the race. Randy Killen would then be the leader and went on to the win without ever relinquishing the lead. Damon Murty came through the pack from starting ninth to take the second position, third went to Cory Bushnell, fourth to Trent Murphy and fifth to Josh Daniels.

Ending the night's racing action was the Hobby Stock feature. Only one feature was run tonight which also required a B Main. It was won by Donnie Gustoff. The feature wasn't much of a contest for winner Michael Murphy as he started on the pole and led the entire 12-lap race. Finishing in second place a distance behind the winner, was the familiar #40 of Randy Embrey. Third went to Eric Stanton, fourth to Chris Hupp and John Watson came from starting 10th, to take the fifth place.

Racing will continue next Saturday night at the Boone Speedway with racing scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information check www.raceboone.com. Until next time, Happy Racing!!

Snyder and Murty post wins in Marshalltown's season opener

Marshalltown Speedway got their regular season of racing underway on Friday night. After a record-breaking 225 cars checked in last Friday for their Frostbuster special, there was still a good car count of 130 plus cars passing through the pit gates for their season opener. The temperature while not the best, was much better than the previous week and thankfully, much more comfortable to watch the racing action.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature started the main event's action. Mike Morrill led the entire race to take the checkers first. Andy Hennigar took second place, Colby Oberembt was third, Randy Bryan was fourth and fifth went to Joel Huggins.

It took two b-mains to whittle the IMCA SportMod feature to their 24-car starting field. Ryan Ashton and Tracy Wassenberg from Wisconsin, won those events. It was a thrilling finish to the A main when a last lap pass decided the winner. Brad Iverson had led the entire race as he peddled hard in front of young Caden Carter. It was appearing to be a win for Iverson but Carter had other ideas and was able to make the pass out of turn two on the final lap and take the checkers first. Following Iverson to take third was another young driver, Tyler Droste, fourth went to Jared Timmerman and fifth to Andy Tiernen.

The IMCA modified feature ran next as 21 of the 22 cars on hand started the main. Visiting drivers from Canada and Wisconsin came to race in "warmer" weather prior to their track's opening and it was looking like a Wisconsin driver was going home with the win. Mike Wedelstadt and Jon Snyder took advantage of their front row starting spots and led the pack throughout the 20-lap feature with Wedelstadt to the point. Snyder took the lead with about five laps remaining and would then go on to the win. Snyder won at Boone last Saturday for their Frostbuster, so he is off to a great start in 2011. Adam Larson came under the checkers in third place, fourth went to Ronn Lauritzen and David Brown was fifth. Those two drivers came from starting eleventh and twelfth.

The IMCA stock cars ran their 18-lap feature next. Sean Johnson charged to the lead and was pulling away from second place Trevor Titus when a yellow would halt the action and bunch up the field. Damon Murty had positioned himself up to third and on the restart, made the pass on Titus for the second position. Nathan Wood soon followed suit to take over the third spot over Titus. At the flag, it was Murty for the win, Johnson kept second over Wood in third and Trent Murphy finished fourth after a mishap in turn four coming to the checkers, found Titus at a halt up against the rail. Finishing fifth in his rookie season in the stock car class, was Grinnell driver Todd Reitzler. Jeff Wollam made a good charge through the pack to finish sixth after having to qualify through the B main.

The IMCA hobby stockers finished the evenings program. Knoxville driver Kevin Fee made it two-for-two at the Marshalltown track as he won the feature as he had the Frostbuster last Friday night. Fee passed leader Aaron Rudolph about the half-way mark to take the victory. Rudolph finished in second, third went to Eric Larson, fourth to Richard Yaw, and rounding out the top five was Russell Damme, Jr.

Racing action will continue next Friday night at Marshalltown. For more information and results, check www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Happy racing!

Marshalltown and Boone Frostbusters

The first race of the season in our neck of the woods was at the Marshalltown Speedway on April 1...yes...April Fool's Day! Mother Nature was none too kind either as racing time temps were very chilly, and a stiff breeze was blowing toward the grandstands. Neither of those factors deterred the crowd though as the stands were quite full. A record car count of 225 cars filled the pits as drivers from near and far came to test their skills on the highbanks. It was announced that about a dozen of our Canadian neighbors joined in the fun, as well as a good number of Wisconsin competitors.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature ran their main event first. Mike Morrill and Andy Henniger chased each other early on with Josh May closely in tow. Young Josh May was able to take the lead and would go home to the win well ahead of second-place finisher Randy Bryan. Third went to James May, fourth to Mike Morrill and fifth was Andy Henniger.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had a huge field of cars with right at 60 cars according to my count. Three B mains were needed to set the 24 car starting field. Those B mains were won by David Schlicht, Austin Kaplan, and Brad Iverson. Pole-sitter, Kyle Brown led the 20-lap feature through the half-way mark when, as often is the case, a restart shuffled up the lead cars. Josh Sherbon took the lead and maintained it to the finish and the win.. Beau Kaplan took the runner-up spot. Brother Austin Kaplan would finish in third from qualifying through a B Main, Kyle Brown took fourth, fifth was Jake Strayer and sixth was Scott Davis.

The IMCA hobby stocks also needed three B mains to complete their feature. Those were won by Norm Buchholz, Donovan Nunnikhoven, and Dustin Filloon. John Watson lost the lead early when he bobbled and was then out of the picture. Kevin Fee, Knoxville driver put his #52 to the point then and sailed across the finish line first for the win. Eric Knutson finished in second place, third went to Nyle Godwin, fourth to Richard Yaw, fifth was Rob Allison, sixth was Cory Adams and seventh was Dustin Elliott.

The IMCA stock cars ran two B mains and those were won by Bob Ahrendsen and a #02 car; didn't catch the name. The 20-lap feature proved to be one of the best stock cars races we've seen in a while as there were six to seven cars upfront in a pack vying for position. Dave Stricker led many of the laps but it was Jay Schmidt who drove his 19J to the eventual victory. He triumphed over Damon Murty in second, Stricker was third, fourth went to Sean Johnson, and fifth was Trent Murphy. I believe the 56 of Kevin Temeyer was sixth and Donavon Smith in seventh. What a show they put on!

The finale of the night was the IMCA modified feature. They would need eight heat races, and four B mains to set their starting A main. The consy features were won by Richie Gustin, Mike Mashl out of Wisconsin who is back in the seat after a time of "retirement", Canadian driver Davin Emmel, and Ronn Lauritzen in his new-look ride. Richie Gustin dominated the entire race to take the feature win. He maneuvered the lap traffic in the flag-to-flag 30-lap feature, to perfection. The bright orange #72 of Brian Mullin, a driver out of Wisconsin, took the runner-up spot, be it a good distance behind the winner. Third was Adam Larson, and unofficially by my observation, fourth was Josh Most, fifth was Luke Wanninger and sixth was Troy Cordes.

It was not the most pleasant of conditions sitting in the cold, wind, dirt and long program which ended about 1:15 a.m., but the racing action was most definitely worth seeing! Next Friday night will begin the Marshalltown Speedway's regular point season with racing action to begin at 7:30 p.m. Check http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/ for more information.

Boone 4-2-11

We headed west for our familiar route to the Boone Speedway on Saturday night for the running of their Frostbuster special. The pits were quite full as expected and right at 200 cars were on hand. The Dwarf/Mod Lite's were not on the docket but we noted several cars that came for a test-n-tune hot lap session or two.

The Northern SportMods ran their feature first and it was a flag-to-flag 20-lap contest. The #12 of Lake City driver, Doug Smith put it in Victory Lane with Clint Luellen taking the runner-up spot. Austin Lucas was scored in third, fourth went to Boone's own Scott Davis and the 92X of Wisconsin's Eric Mahlik rounded out the top five.

Jon Snyder led the entire 25-lap IMCA modified feature as he took the victory. Several yellow flags during the contest did not bother Snyder as he maintained the point spot. Jimmy Gustin made it to second place, third was Todd Inman, fourth went to Richie Gustin and Jeremy Mills finished in fifth from qualifying through a B main, when a car was disqualified.

Winning the 20-lap feature for the IMCA stock cars was the familiar #35 car of Donavon Smith. Trent Murphy came home in second, third was Wisconsin driver JJ Heinz in the #57, fourth went to Norm Chesmore and fifth was Ryan Rose. There were thirty-five cars checked in and a B main completed the starting 24-car grid. The B main was won by Robert Stofer.

Ending the night's racing was the IMCA hobby stock feature. Des Moines driver John Watson made it to victory lane in the 15-lap event. Devin Smith challenged for the win, but had to settle for second place. Third was the 29N of Cody Nielsen out of Fort Dodge, fourth went to Eric Stanton and fifth to Michael Murphy. Next Saturday night, April 9th, will begin the Boone Speedway's regular points night. Racing action is set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. For more information be sure and check http://www.raceboone.com/. Happy racing!
