Logue Wins Again at His Home Track

After the sweltering heat and humidity of the past week, it was a relief to have a more pleasant weather night at the Boone Speedway. There would be a three-in-a-row winner, many dnfs for the night, and multi-groove racing to entertain the fans.

The first feature to make it's way on the freshly farmed track, would be the mighty little Dwarf/Mod Lite cars. Former sprint car driver Mike Thomas would take the lead initially from his front row starting position with Dusty Masolini right behind. Thomas would lose the lead to Masolini after a restart. Masolini would eventually stretch out his lead and go on to his third victory in as many weeks. Following him across the line would be Jeff Stensland, Mike Kennedy, Andy Hennigar, and Ed Zehm.

Due to the attrition in the SportMod heats, the scheduled B Main saw so few cars take to the track, it was decided to checker the consy and let all able cars start the A Main. Pole sitter Zach Rawlins would be the leader of the pack early on, but after some on the track incidents that reduced the field, it would be Iowa State student, Geoff Olson taking over the top spot. Coming on strong to take over third would be Jeremy Embrey who evidently arrived at the track late and had to tag his heat. Embrey would pass Olson to take the lead and at the finish line it would be Embrey, Olson, Scott Davis, Joel Bushore and Kyle Brown.

Twenty-five of the IMCA modifieds were on hand for the evening, but only twenty-one of those were able to make the feature call. J. J. Scott made the charge at the beginning of the race but Adam Larson would quickly move up to second position from starting eighth, with just a handful of laps down. It was a good race between those two front runners, until a contact incident between the two in turn four right after Larson had passed Scott, caused a momentary "blip" for the two, though they both recovered and continued on. Seizing his opportunity when that happened, was none other than local favorite John Logue, who passed both Scott and Larson as well as Molle who was caught up in the Scott/Larson incident, and came to a rest causing the yellow flag to fly. This was a race that saw many dnfs as only nine cars were left running at the checkered flag. Taking the win was Logue and Adam Larson having to settle for second. Third would go to J. J. Scott, fourth to Scott Baker and fifth to Josh "Happy" Gilman. The remaining cars running were Cale Sponsler (6th), Randy Havlik (7th), Todd Shute (8th) and Russ Dickerson (9th). It's always unfortunate to see so many track incidents causing the cars to exit the track, and this was certainly one of those nights.

Seventeen of the nineteen stock cars would make their feature. The two front row starters, Larry Crocheck and Josh Brauckman led the green flag lap. Moving up to take second from Brauckman would be Wayne Gifford who was then pressuring Crocheck for the lead and managed to do so. Later, contact was made between those two front runners and it appeared that Crocheck was asked to leave the contest due to the contact. Gifford would go to the pits for a tire change and tag the field which put Lake City's Donavon Smith out front on the restart. From there on, it was Smith maintaining the number one position and he went home to another win. Second was Bryan Trogdon, third to Chris Webb, fourth to Trent Murphy and rounding out the top five was Rick Speck.

With 38 cars checked in for the hobby stocks, there were two features on the docket tonight.
The first feature saw a good battle up front between Scott Lograsso, Beau Kaplan and Michael Murphy. That would be the way they would eventually cross the finish line with Aaron Rudolph and Dean Hartwig rounding out the top five. The 44J of Justin Hopkins would claim the 38R of Rudolph.

Dylan Book in his #B00K car looked to possibly be attaining his first feature win as he led the second hobby stock feature. But it wasn't to be on this night, as he eventually lost that lead to Chris Hupp who went to Victory Lane. Devin Smith would also pass Book to take second, Book got third, Pat Mather fourth and Alan VanGorp was fifth.

We enjoyed visiting with Paul Vetter, IMCA Western Region Director and Vicki Johnson. They have been back this past week on one their many "Race Tours de Iowa". We caught up with them at several races during their time back here and always enjoy their knowledgeable take on racing.

Next Saturday at the Boone Speedway will be the added attraction of a rollover contest and a huge fireworks display after the regular night of racing. There are many other special racing programs in our area this coming week as well. Try to get out and attend at least one of those dirt track shows. Happy racing!

Racing finally resumes at Marshalltown

After Mother Nature had caused the past two weeks of scheduled racing at Marshalltown to be cancelled, more pleasant weather prevailed this past Friday night. The sky to the west was a bit dark, but on this evening, it did not put a damper on the racing program. The added event for the evening would see the IMCA Northern SportMod's run a King of the Hill after the regular racing was completed.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was first on the docket and it would find undefeated Mike Morrill once again attempting to maintain that crown. Jumping to the early lead was Johnny Mordock, but Tim Hennigar would quickly make his way up into the second spot. Tim Hennigar would take over the number one position as the laps wound down and newcomer for the night, Troy Hudson would pass Mordock for runner-up spot. With Hennigar eyeing the checkered flag, the action would come to a halt as a yellow flag flew. It would be a green, white, checkered finish and the #5 of Hudson would make that winning pass in the last few feet to the checkers. Hudson was the winner, Tim Hennigar had to settle for second, Mordock in third, and the undefeated season of Mike Morrill came to an end as he finished fourth. Rounding out the top five was Andy Hennigar. Hudson took home an extra $100 as the "bounty" had been increasing the last few weeks.

After the SportMod's had to run a B feature to get their starting line-up whittled down to 24 cars, it would find the 20G car of Michael Grantham jump to the lead. Grantham, in his Iowa National Guard Red Bull Division car, would keep his lead for much of the race. In the meantime, fifteenth starter Kevin Sather would be making his way through the pack to take over second position. Also moving up impressively was Paul Nagle who had followed Sather through the field from having started 16th. Both Sather and Nagle would get around Grantham to finish one-two. Grantham took third, Kyle Brown who also ran a strong race, took fourth, and Joel Bushore came from well back in the pack also, to round out the top five.

Next up was the "Class too Tough to Tame", the IMCA Stock Cars. As the race began, it would be the "Flyin Farmer" Rick Brown putting his Ford Thunderbird out in front. He led easily until lap eight and as a caution flew, his wheel snapped off and he came to a rough halt as he ran over the wheel. His night was done. At the restart, familiar car #85, Dustin Smith, found himself inheriting the lead. He had started in 16th place and had been making his way through the field with ease. He would go home to victory once again, with Tracy Gienger taking second with a good run, Jeff Wollam in third from starting well back in the field, Michael Jaennette was fourth and Trent Murphy was fifth. A claim would see #6 Donnie Bown claiming Gienger and they would exchange.

Fifteen of the seventeen IMCA modifieds on hand, would start their feature. Brett Ladehoff and Jay Schmidt would be unable to start. Ladehoff had won his heat race, but unfortunately as he crossed the finish line, his car "gave up the ghost". Schmidt had been caught up in a multi-car pile-up in that same heat, and was finished for the night. As the race began, Tim Murty would put his car out front as Scott Simotovich in a former Jimmy Gustin car, would be chasing him. Veteran John Logue who was on hand for the night, would later take over second spot from Simotovich and then Jimmy Gustin would also slip by. Logue would eventually take over the top spot and go on to the win. Jimmy Gustin took second, Tim Murty was third, Simatovich fourth, and Jon Snyder came from the back of the field to take fifth.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA hobby stocks who also had to run a B main to get their starting line-up cut to 24 cars. Pole-sitter Adam Rickett, who had won his heat race, led the race early. His night would end with what I believe was a flat tire and Grinnell's Todd Reitzler would take over the top spot. Reitzler's night would also end with a flat with three laps remaining. At the finish line, it would be the 12K of Eric Knutson taking the victory, Nic Shearer followed in second, Terry Shaffar in third, Devin Smith in fourth and Eric Larson in fifth. A claim was made in this divison as well as the 99J of Adam Gebel claimed the 43 of Shearer.

A SportMod King of the Hill competition ended the night's activities. In round one, Jamie Schirm beat Adam Shelman, Paul Nagle beat Michael Grantham, Kyle Brown beat Geoff Olson and Joel Rust would get a bye. Round two saw Nagle defeat Schirm and Brown defeat Rust. The final round would see Nagle out distance Brown to take the King of the Hill crown.

Don't forget the upcoming IMCA American Stock Car Shoot Out event to be held at the Marshalltown Speedway this coming Thursday night, July 2nd in conjunction with the three-event Stock Car Series. They will run at the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta on Tuesday night, June 30, and Independence Motor Speedway in Independence on Wednesday, July 1. Independence will also be hosting the Deery Brothers Late Model event that same night. Should be an exiting series event for the IMCA stock cars. Regular racing will resume at Marshalltown on Friday night, July 3rd.

Happy racing!

From Indy Cars to Dirt Track Racing

We were up and off to the Iowa Speedway on Sunday morning and in the parking lot by 7:15 a.m. with friends and family ready to tailgate until race time. However, Mother Nature decided to put a damper temporarily on our activities but the rain passed quickly and timing couldn't have been more perfect to fire up the grill. We ate, got to the grandstand just as the National Anthem played and the fly over commenced, and in our seats as the command to start the engines began. It turned out to be a very warm and sunny day, but with the Iowa Corn Indy 250 over in right at 100 minutes, things were wrapped up pretty quickly.

Though we are not very familiar with some of the IRL drivers, we always enjoy seeing those more famous names to the league--Helio Castroneves, the recent Indy 500 winner, Dario Franchitti, who had won previously at the Iowa Speedway, Scott Dixon, Danica Patrick, Tony Kanaan, and Dan Wheldon. The first half of the race had several cautions, slowing the action. When we say action, that is at 170 mph plus! The fastest lap turned was right at 179 mph. It's quite the sensation to be sitting close to the track with the cars flashing past!

It appeared that Tony Kanaan was finally going to have a good day at the track unlike his previous two races there. He led quite comfortably until pitting for fuel and tires and we were expecting him to make up time quickly, but after one lap on fresh tires, he broke loose coming out of turn two, hit the outer wall and came to a rest on the apron of the backstretch. His day once again, was ended at the Iowa Speedway.

At the end of those 250 laps, it was Dario Franchitti taking his second win at the Newton track, having won in 2007. Ryan Briscoe from Team Penske was the runner-up, Hideki Mutch from Japan taking third, Dan Weldon in his National Guard Panther Racing ride came home fourth, and rounding out the top five was Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon in fifth.

On Monday evening we got back to some good old dirt track racing at the Iowa State Fair
Speedway for the rescheduled USMTS race. It was as hot as an August state fair night too with high temps and high humidity. The series's drivers always put on a good show for the fans no matter where they run. On this evening, USMTS promoter Todd Staley would join up with regular promoter of the State Fair track, Mick Trier to put the show on for the fans.
Also on the program was the mid-season track features for the IMCA hobby stocks, IMCA Northern SportMods, and Trucks as well as an open show for stock cars.

The SportMod feature saw point leader Austin Kaplan jump to the lead with Jesse Sobbing in tow. Sobbing would get around Kaplan and then Kaplan's night would end when he left the track while under a yellow flag. Jesse Sobbing would take the checker's first followed by Bryon Weyer, Tommy Killen, Jr., a red #2 car which I believe was the H2O car of Gary Stajcar, and finishing fifth was Jack Myer.

The next feature was the IMCA hobby stocks. After seeing an unusual sight of a car almost pirouetting on his left rear wheel after a racing incident and a yellow following. the action continued with point leader Shannon Anderson taking the win easily over Rob Allison, third went to Ray Stock, Jr., fourth to Alan VanGorp and fifth to Kenny Loftus.

The Dirt Trucks ran their mid-season feature next which was started, as was all of the mid-season features, straight up by points. This put Carl Moyer on the pole position. That would be where he finished, taking home the win. Following him across the line was Ed Nelson, Rick Clark, Brett Moyer and Lou Sipolt.

With the show moving right along, a sudden flying mud clod during the stock car feature was hurled into the air in turn one, which struck a transformer, and soon the track went dark. There was about a 30 minute delay until lights were back up and action was resumed. In the meantime, none other than NASCAR's Kenny Wallace, who was on hand to compete in the USMTS race, was doing his best on the mic to entertain the fans during the power outage. He is always upbeat and by no means shy in his dialog with the crowds. When racing resumed, several incidents would cause the yellow to fly and ultimately, the race was ended under a yellow/checkered when an incident between second and third place cars of Todd Inman and Tory Reicks caused a pile-up on the front stretch. The incident also took out fourth place runner at the time of Kyle Harwood. The finish saw the leader before the incident of Nathan Wood from Webster, take the win, 12M Brian Mitrisin second, 34 of Pat Rachels third, fourth to 57V Mike VanGenderen (all of those being weekly competitors at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa) and fifth to "Hot" Rod Richards.

The finale of the night was the USMTS modifieds. It's always a stirring moment when they make the parade lap with the American flags flying and Lee Greenwood's God Bless the U.S.A. playing. Early on, Colt Mather would lead the field but an incident with his hood coming up, and then his exiting the track, would end his night. Pole sitter Richie Gustin would then take the lead, but Jason Hughes ended that when he passed Gustin. In the meantime, New Sharon, Iowa driver Zack VanderBeek was gaining positions from his 17th starting spot. as well as Kelly Shryock from his 14th spot. The finish would see Hughes take the win with Richie Gustin in second, Zack VanderBeek in third over Kelly Shryock in fourth and Bowbelles, North Dakota driver Steven Pfeifer taking fifth. Although we don't remember ever having seen Pfeifer race previously, he ran very well. We also noted his hometown of Bowbelles, North Dakota. The only other person we remember from there would be a former Iowa Hawkeye basketball center, Les Jepsen.

It was a hot, sticky night watching the races, but the Positively Racing family was covering the event well, with Jeff Broeg and Kevin Trittien in attendance as well. It's always fun to see their different take on the the races we attend together. Do check out their blogs.

More racing events to come. Get out and attend a race somewhere. Happy racing!

Adam Larson, Trent Murphy and Dusty Masolini are repeat winners

Though the sky was a bit threatening on Saturday night and the program was hurried along with no farming, the Boone Speedway got their weekly show in with no problem. Adam Larson in the modified division, Trent Murphy in stock cars and Dusty Masolini in the Dwarf/Mod Lites, would repeat their wins from the previous week.

The Dwarf/Mod Lites was the first feature of the night and it was run just as soon as the only B Main of the evening in the SportMod class was completed. The track conditions were not the norm for them as they are usually running on a just farmed surface. Dusty Masolini would take the lead from his third place starting position early on with Josh May trailing him and Charlie Brown coming through the pack nicely to take over third place. That would be the way the top three would finish with Masolini taking a repeat win from last week, Josh May in second and Charlie Brown in third. Rounding out the top five would be Tim Hennigar in fourth and Andy Hennigar in fifth.

The SportMod's ran their main event next. Jared Timmerman would lead the race for a while as he had advanced from his 7th starting spot. Several cautions would mix the field up and after the half-way mark, it would find Jeremy Embrey taking over the top position with last week's winner Scott Davis taking over second from Timmerman. That would be the way they would finish with Paul Nagle coming home fourth and Craig Elliott took fifth.

The IMCA modified class saw a strong field of cars but in the end, it would be Adam Larson from Ames, repeating his win as he took the lead before half-way and never relinquishing it after that. John Logue advanced from eleventh starting spot, to take the runner-up position with Russ Dickerson taking third, Scott Baker fourth, and Josh "Happy" Gilman in fifth.

The show moved right along with possible weather coming in and quickly the stock cars took to the track. Jamie Morey in his Ford powered machine, would lead the race early from his pole starting position , but it was the 25 car of Trent Murphy making his way through the pack to take away the top spot with a handful of laps to go. Veteran Robert Stofer would make his way to second as the laps wound down. In the end, it would be Murphy taking the checkers followed by Stofer, Wayne Gifford, Bill Reetz, and Don Vis. Morey would fall back to finish sixth.

It was back to two features for the hobby stockers this week. The first feature would find a new face in Victory Lane as Matt Drottz took his first win of the year. The early lead was held by Chris Hupp until Drottz was able to get around him. Hupp would have to settle for second tonight, Richard Yaw II took third, Daniel Hilsabeck fourth, and Eric Stanton fifth. Yaw would have his engine claimed by the m15 of Pat Mather. Yaw had claimed Mather early in May I believe.

The final hobby feature would run flag to flag. Travis Fenton would lead early but a bobble would relegate him several spots back in the running. In the end, it would be Lake City's Devin Smith coming home to the checkers first, followed by Scott Lograsso, Michael Murphy in third, Alan VanGorp in fourth, and Travis Fenton would take fifth.

The program was completed before 10:15 for which we were glad due to an early morning call the next day for the Iowa Speedway's Indy car race. The only change for the evening was the kid's bike races which were postponed until next week. It was announced that those kids would be admitted free next week.

There is lots of racing action in our area now, so get out and see some of the shows if at all possible. Happy racing!

Long time racer Larry Embrey wins again at Boone

Pleasant weather greeted the fans and drivers at Boone on Saturday night for another night of racing. A nice field of cars was on hand with several new drivers signing in. Several area tracks had been cancelled due to the rain on Friday and Saturday, so they were needing their "fix" of racing. It's always nice to see new-to-the-track cars out there trying their hand on the oval.

The first feature of the night was the Dwarf/Mod Lites and it would see them go flag to flag. Pole sitter, Dusty Masolini would take advantage of his starting spot and take the lead as soon as the race went green. He would maintain that lead throughout the race and take the win. Congratulations to 22 year old Masolini who we have seen make vast improvements over the last couple of years we have been watching him race. Coming home second was Ed Zehm who had started in 10th position, third went to Eric Hendrickson, fourth to Charlie Brown and fifth to Andy Hennigar.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had 37 cars competing for the night and it took two B mains to whittle the starting feature to 24 cars. Those consolation winners were Eric Elliott and Paul Nagle. Several cautions would bring the action to a halt. With a handful of laps to go, it would be Scott Davis putting the pressure on leader Dustin Dalton with Iowa State student Geoff Olson riding in third. Davis would make the pass on Dalton to take over the lead and at the checkers it would be Davis winning; coming from his 11th starting postion. Dalton would finish second, and Geoff Olson would make his way from 8th position to take third. Fourth was Matthew Meinecke who also came through the field impressively from starting 10th, and rounding out the top five was Paul Nagle who had to make the feature by winning his B main.

The modifieds took to the track next for their main event. Adam Larson would get the lead before halfway and he would keep that lead easily even after caution caused restarts. Larson took the win with a comfortable lead over Des Moine's Greg Cox. Third went to Todd Shute, fourth to Craig Carlson, and fifth to Jay Schmidt. We have seen Larson win multiple times this year at Marshalltown, but this would be his first win at the Boone Speedway.

Terry Cornelison would lead much of the stock car feature with Robert Stofer in tow. Coming through the pack would be Bryan Trogdon and Donavon Smith to make the race interesting. Those three plus Wayne Gifford and Trent Murphy would all pass Cornelison. In the final laps it would be Murphy, Stofer, Trogdon, Smith and Gifford putting on quite the show for the fans. At the finish line, it would be Trent Murphy once again taking the win--his fourth of the year at Boone, including the early Shakedown event--Stofer would maintain second, Donavon Smith took third, Trogdon fourth and Wayne Gifford was fifth.

Two hobby stock features would end the show with Alan VanGorp taking the checkers first.
Early leader Devin Smith would have to exit the track, handing the lead over to VanGorp. This would be VanGorp's second win at Boone this season. Second place went to Beau Kaplan who came from well back in the starting field, as did third place finisher Michael Murphy. Fourth went to "visitor" Blake Miller from Des Moines and fifth was Dean Hartwig. Miller would find himself going home lighter, as he was claimed by the 8B of Bobby Smith. We understand Miller came to the track by himself, so certainly hope he had some fellow racers step up and help out on the motor pull.

The final hobby feature saw veteran Larry Embrey start from the pole. He would keep that postion until the checkers flew and add yet another victory to his many many wins. Embrey must be nearing his 70th birthday and as Bill Haglund announced, still racing and winning even after hip and knee replacement surgeries. Cory Gustoff took second after Tim Hadley lost that position on the last lap with a flat tire. Third would go to Eric Stanton, fourth to Clint Luellen and fifth to Richard Yaw II.

With many special events coming up around the state and surrounding area, we hope to be taking in some of those shows. Hope you can too.

14 year old Cayden Carter takes B Mod win at Osky

It was an overcast night at the Southern Iowa Speedway but on this night, it would just be cloud cover and no rain. The B Mods would be running for $700 which brought a full field of 24 cars to the speedway, which was nice to see.

In the hobby stock feature, it took several restarts to get the race going. This must be frustrating to many of the drivers as well as us fans. Kris Walker and Steve Allen - who was making his first appearance of the year at the track - would battle up front early. It didn't take long until the 52 car of Nathan Wood would put his car in the mix and soon made the low side work for him and charge into the lead. Also making good headway would be Donavan Nunnikhoven in the 2N car who was able to pass Walker and Dale Porter. In the end, it would be Wood maintaining his position for the win, Nunnikhoven taking second, Porter in third, Walker in fourth and Steve Allen rounded out the top five.

The modifieds had their 15-lap main up next. The "Z-Man", Zack VanderBeek didn't waste time in putting his car up front and in the lead with just a few laps down and another familiar car, the 17P of Brad Pinkerton, running in second. Both of these competitors have had much success at the Southern Iowa Speedway, which we would think they consider their "home" track. Tonight they would finish one-two with VanderBeek taking the top spot, Pinkerton following him across the line for second, Colt Mather came home in third, the 4R of Ron VerBeek in fourth, and Scott Dickey in fifth. Earlier, hard contact with the turn one wall would put last week's winner, Steve Stewart on the hook when it appeared something broke on the car.

All eleven stock cars on hand started their feature. Jumping to the lead at the green flag, was the 20W(Dub) car of Shane Weller. He had shown his muscle in winning his heat race, and that continued on in the main event as he was never seriously challenged. Most of the race was run on the high groove, though "The Flying Dutchman" of Mike VanGenderen was trying his hand by going low. After he made one successful pass, a yellow flag flew. On the restart, the 12M of Brian Mitrisin would have his machine "give up the ghost" with VanGenderen getting caught up in the liquid he laid down and ending his night after he rode the outside guard rail. After even more attrition, only five cars would be running at the end. Shane Weller came home to the checkers first, Matt Greiner second, Zack VanderBeek in third, Corey Stout fourth, and visitor Matt Fox from Paton, Iowa and a competitior at the Mineral City Speedway in Ft. Dodge, cross in fifth. We were told later that Fox would be dq'd for running an illegal carb at the Southern Iowa Speedway.

The B-Mod featured event of the evening was last on the program. They were running for $700 to win - their class being picked for the extra pay for the night. Leading the race early from his pole position, was the D1 of Drew Lawson with Kevin Fee and young Cayden Carter chasing him. Lawson would have his car slow on lap 9 while leading, and he had to exit to the pits ending his chance for a first ever win. This would put the 10 of Carter in the top position, and he would continue on to the win. Following him across the line would be Kevin Fee for second, Tyler Groenendyk in third, the 7 of Carter VandenBerg in fourth, and Andrew Schroeder finished in fifth. This is the second time we have seen the 14 year old Cayden Carter take a win for extra money and he and Grandpa Jimmy Carter always seem to be ready for those races. We recall seeing the youngster sitting in the grandstands not all those many years ago, and now he is out on the track winning races. Always nice to see those fans from a few years ago, now out on the track racing.

The show was completed shortly after 10:30 p.m. Complete results are listed below. Happy racing!

New faces in Victory Lane at Boone

We were wondering if Mother Nature was going to allow for racing at Boone on Saturday night but racing went on as scheduled. We understand the rain ended about noon in Boone, and work began on the track soon after. The track held up well and the night provided two and three wide racing all night long.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite class ran their feature first and it went flag to flag. Ed Zehm quickly came to the front from his 11th starting position and he went on to take the win. Crossing in second was Charlie Brown who started 9th, third was 12th place starter and current point leader Andy Hennigar, fourth was Cory Dennis and rounding out the top five was James May.

There was another good field of SportMods on hand with 27 cars signed in. The feature would see 25 of them start. It was front row starter Lynn Brockett jumping out to a good lead at the drop of the green. He held the lead comfortably until a yellow bunched up the field with a few laps to go. It would then see veteran Rick Ringgenberg on Brockett's tail with 11th place starter Scott Davis in third. At the finish it would be Brockett maintaining his top position, taking the win. Scott Davis would slip by Ringgenberg to take second. Fourth went to Eric Elliott and fifth would be his father, Craig Elliott. Congratulations to Lynn Brockett on a fine run and his first ever SportMod win.

A full field of 24 IMCA modifieds took to the track for their main event. It was the front row starters of Skeeter Paris and Adam Larson leaping to the lead and a good race between the two began. Larson lead with Paris close behind until an unfortunate contact incident in turn four, resulted in what appeared to be a flat for Larson. The 2L of Larson would have to exit the track while Paris continued on. In the meantime, it was the 24 of Robert Avery taking the lead position with a hard charging crowd favorite, Todd Shute right behind. Shute would then have to leave after getting a flat tire from some racing contact with Avery. As the race wound down, it would be Avery keeping his top spot and go home for his first win of the year. Paris would take the runner up spot, Randy Havlik came home third, Mike Molle in fourth and Josh Gilman was fifth.

The IMCA stock car feature had 25 cars out of the 28 on hand, start their A main. From his front row starting position, the GT1 of veteran racer Brian Efkamp, was off to the lead. Another veteran driver, Robert Stofer, would be right behind Efkamp and in the end, that is the way they crossed the finish line. I'm sure it was a very happy Efkamp taking the win in his Ford powered machine, as it has been sometime since he last visited Victory Lane. Coming home in third was Wayne Gifford, fourth Donovan Smith from starting 14th, and fifth was Terry Cornelison.

The last feature of the evening was ONE A main for the IMCA hobby stocks. We cannot remember a time in recent memory, that only one hobby stock main was run at Boone other than for a special event. A B main was held earlier to trim the feature to 24 cars out of the 36 on hand. It looked to be another new face getting a win as Dylan Book in his #B00K car led the race by a good length over Matt Wahlert early and then familiar #25M, Michael Murphy took over the second spot. Book still maintained a good lead, until a yellow flag flew with only 4 laps to go. After the restart, Murphy would overtake Book for the lead and several other cars slipped by him as well. Murphy went home to the checkers flying first. Following him across the line in second was Cody Gustoff, Justin Hopkins in third, Devin Smith for fourth and Dylan Book held on for a good fifth place finish.

The night's events were completed at 10:05 allowing us an earlier return home than usual, which was nice. This would complete a 4 night straight run of racing for us as we'd attended Oskaloosa on Wednesday, traveled to Alta on Thursday, spent Friday at our "home" track in Marshalltown, and our traditional Saturday night at Boone. We are so lucky to be able to have so many choices here in the state of Iowa and now with special events season starting, there are even more races to choose from even during the week. Hope you will be able to catch a race at one of those many tracks. Happy racing!

Morrill continues his perfect season at Marshalltown

Friday night's action at the Marshalltown Speedway saw a perfect streak continue for Dwarf/Mod Lite driver Mike Morrill. His record stands at 7 of 7 at the track, which includes the Frostbuster special. There were 18 of the cars on hand for the evening with 16 starting the feature. One of the cars not making the call was the #73 of Jason Smithson who had rolled his machine on the backstretch during the heat. Thankfully, he was okay, but the car wasn't. Morrill made his way through the pack, picking off cars at a regular clip each lap. Soon he found himself out front and he went home to another victory. Following him across the line was Dusty Masolini, in third was Mike Kennedy, fourth Johnny Mordock and fifth was Josh May. Morrill once again, gave his trophy to a youngster in the stands.

The IMCA SportMods had 33 cars and had to run a B Main event which was won by Shawn Hunter. The main event saw the 2T car of Tom Rawlins lead the race early from his front row starting position. Kyle Brown would then make the pass and put his #21 car in the lead which he held for quite some time. After a couple of yellow flags flew, it would be Scott Davis passing Brown for the top spot and it looked as if they would be finishing in those positions. However,
with just a few laps remaining, Davis developed a miss in his car and on the last lap coming for the checkers, his machine would slow allowing Brown to pass him and take the checkers first.
Davis did hold on for second, with Brad Iverson crossing in third, Luke Wanninger in fourth, and the green machine of Neil Follett in fifth.

The "class too tough to tame", the IMCA stock cars also ran a B Main which was won by Tracy Gienger. Pole sitter Jared Daggett jumped to the lead on the start but Steve Meyer soon made the pass into the lead with Jeff Wollam and Dusty Vis also passing Daggett. Meyer had to remove himself from the fray however, as he exited the track on the backstretch with problems.
That put Jeff Wollam in the lead with Jefferson, Iowa's Trent Murphy moving up to take over second position. It appeared one of those two would be the eventual winner as the laps wound down, but an unfortunate incident between the two cars, low in turn three, put them both out of contention and both retired to the pits. On the restart with three laps to go, it was the familiar 85 car of Dustin Smith leading the pack and he would go on to take the feature win. Joe Luethje had his best finish of the year, coming home second, Mike Todd was third, Dave Atcher in fourth, and Michael Jaennette would found out the top five.

Nineteen modifieds would be on hand for the evening, but torn up equipment as the result of incidents happening in the heat races, saw only fifteen cars start their feature. It proved to be one of those full moon nights with multiple incidents throughout the evening. Crowd favorite Jimmy Gustin took the lead early and he and Adam Larson put on quite the show for the fans. Larson would then make the pass for first and he would then continue his high line in turns three and four, while diving low in turn one. It seemed to be working for him perfectly but he did at one time, try a slightly different line, and Gustin nearly took advantage of that. However, Larson would go back to his favored line and this would see him through to first across the finish line. This would be Larson's fourth win of the season at Marshalltown. Jimmy Gustin was second, veteran Vern Jackson in third, Todd Conrad in fourth and Duane Peterson was fifth.

The final feature was the IMCA hobby stocks. It would see Devin Smith taking an early lead and he would go home to victory. Following him would be Terry Shaffar and Damien Bown. By taking a look at the results elsewhere, it doesn't appear that the 22D car of Daniel Hilsabeck, who I scored in fourth position, is shown, so we are not sure about that finishing spot, but believe it was Josh Saunders crossing in fifth. Eric Larson would follow Saunders to the checkers.

Two night ending special events were held with the first being the "Dwarf Gambler" race.
Five cars would participate as they each tossed $25 into the pot and it was a winner takes all race. Johnny Mordock, who makes the long trip from Creston, Iowa each Friday night, was the successful competitor to take the extra $125 home for his night's winnings. He out distanced Dusty Masolini, Josh May, Mike Kennedy and Jason Hall.

Earlier in the evening, the Ed Gifford owned #17G sprint car was on hand to run a few fast laps for the fans. The Minuteman Printing sponsored car was driven by Dusty Zomer from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In a fun challenge that ended the program for the night, Adam Larson in his 2L modified would take on the high powered winged sprint. To win, the sprint car needed to pass Larson twice, but at the finish line, it would be Larson winning by inches! It was quite exciting to see a modified take win over a sprint car! For those fans who did not stay to see this, they missed out.

With dust flying and the full moon appearing to be a jinx for many drivers on the night, it was still an enjoyable night's entertainment. Thanks drivers for all your efforts in entertaining us.
Happy racing!

Al Hejna takes the checkers in USMTS at Alta

We made our first trip in several years up to the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta for last night's USMTS race. It's right at a 200 mile trip for us, but we certainly enjoyed some great racing! We enjoyed meeting promoter Jeff Herrig -- introduced to us by fellow Positively Racing member, Tapfan -- and then had a pleasant evening sharing the night's racing activities with him and other racing family. It's always more fun when we can swap racing info with fellow enthusiasts!

Since Alta did not hold their regular Wednesday night of racing, they ran their regular classes as well. The first feature of the evening was the IMCA Sport Compact class. We seldom see these 4-cylinder cars run. Taking the feature was the 75 car of Corey Flannigan.

Next up on the track was the IMCA hobby stockers. A driver that has really been hot this year, Shannon Anderson, took home yet another win. He put his #78 car up front and stayed there to take the checkers first. Coming home in second was #45B Craig Brotherton, third #81 Devin Smith, fourth #62B Andy Boeckman, and fifth #32 Kyle Robinson.

The IMCA SportMod feature would see the #12 of Doug Smith win, followed in second by Brett Meyer. Meyer was not racing his usual #1M machine, but instead, was in a familiar looking black #22 car. He was paying tribute to long time racing supporter, Charlie Clark who recently passed. Clark had Nebraskan Steve Kosiski piloting the original car in years past. Taking third would be #9 Tony Pogeler, fourth #90 Chris Grothe and fifth #60 Tanner Powers.

One of our favorite classes, the IMCA stock cars, ran their feature next. When there are Smith brothers on the track, you know they are always going to be up front and tonight was no different. Trent Murphy in his #25 machine, jumped to the early lead from his pole position and was in command for a while. It wasn't long however, until Dustin Smith was reeling him in with brother Donavon right behind. Dustin caught and passed Murphy as did Donovan, so it was a Smith brother shootout at the end. The #85 of Dustin kept the #35 of Donovan at bay, and they came home one-two. Murphy in#25, finished a close third, fourth was #01U of Chris Ullrich and rounding out the top five was yet another Smith brother, David in his #8 machine.

The final event of the evening was the USMTS feature brought to the track by the series promoter, Todd Staley. Jumping to an early lead was Waterloo driver, Corey Dripps in his #31 car. It wasn't long until defending race winner, Kelly Shryock was riding in second place trying to reel Dripps in. However, the class act of the night, Al "A Train" Hejna was hot on their heels. He soon passed them both for the lead and after that, had a pretty comfortable race to the finish line. Hejna took that checkered flag first followed by Shryock in second and Corey Dripps in third. Taking fourth with an impressive run was #65 Tommy Myer and fifth was the Watertown, South Dakota driver, #14 Jon Tesch. Tesch has been having a very successful run of late with the series.

Even with arriving back home after 3 a.m., we were glad we made the trip up to Alta. Thanks to track promoter Jeff Herrig and USMTS series promoter Todd Staley for giving us fans a great night of entertainment. Of course, thanks also goes to all of the drivers for their most important part.

Make sure you check out Tapfan's Tours blog for a much in depth take of the races. Happy racing everyone!

Stewart, Greiner, McDaniel and Wood take wins at Osky

After last week's rain out, Osky finally got back to their regular night of Wednesday racing. On this night, there would be an extra big payout for the hobby stock class as they raced for $700 to win. Next week, it will be the B Mods with the $700 payout. Extra money always seems to bring new faces to the track and that's always nice to see for us fans.

The first feature of the night was the USRA stock cars and though there were only 11 cars in attendance, they definitely put on a show, especially upfront. Matt Greiner jumped to the lead from his front row starting spot but it wasn't long until "The Flying Dutchman", Mike VanGenderen was in the fray! It was a battle between those two for much of the race with VanGenderen trying every line to get around Greiner. However, it wasn't meant to be, as Greiner came home to the checkers first with the 57V of VanGenderen having to settle for that runner-up position. Not far behind was the familiar 12M car driven by Brian Mitrisin in third, cousin Chase Mitrisin in fourth, and Corey Stout in fifth.

The B Mods had a good car count, as often is the case at every track we attend, with 20 cars in competition. Look for more next week with the extra money for the feature win. We knew it wouldn't be long until we saw Jason McDaniel in victory lane at Osky, and it happened last night. He was pretty happy with his win there, coming on top of his feature win last weekend at Bloomfield. Following him across the finish line, was young Carter VandenBerg who had his machine toward the front most of the race. Third was Josh Modde in his good looking "green machine", fourth was Brian Weyer and fifth the 02 of Andrew Schroeder.

Modifieds were up next for their 15-lap feature. It was nice to see a new face on the track with West Liberty's Steve Boley piloting car #71 which earlier in the season, had been driven by David Holder from Missouri. We understand that Holder has decided to retire and Boley took over the ride. Boley is a veteran driver who has had a great career in the late models. The pole sitter, Steve Stewart had a great run last night and easily came home the victor. Behind him was visitor Bruce Handord in his #61 machine, third was Josh Truman, fourth local favorite Brad Pinkerton, and Boley took fifth place.

The final feature of the night was the USRA hobby stocks with 25 cars on hand to vie for that $700 win. Craig Brown took advantage of his pole position start, and kept it up front for a while. Several yellow flags would stop the action and several cars would ride the fence as they were running the very high line. Through mishaps on the track, and mechanical problems, the field of cars left running at the end of the night was only thirteen at our count. Strong at first was visiting driver Steve "Scubba" Churchill, who is an Adams County (Corning) Speedway regular who was piloting one of Jim "Cowboy" Tull's #22 cars. Problems relegated him to a far back finish, but always fun to see him race. It was also nice to see Donovon Nunnkihoven back in a racecar, although not in his familiar #5N. Tonight, he was in a #2N and he was in fine form as he began the feature in about 17th position, and was able to come through the pack for a third place finish. But tonight, it would once again be a familiar car seeing that checkered flag fly first -- Nathan Wood. Coming home in second was Craig Brown, third Nunnikhoven, fourth Danny Thrasher, and fifth was TJ Henderson.

An enjoyable night of racing was concluded right at 10:15 p.m. A nice crowd was on hand with more children in attendance with school now being out for the summer.

Happy racing! Results are listed below.
