Paris, T. Murphy, S. Davis score wins at Boone

It was a free grandstand admission for all Boone zip code residents with a photo ID last night. If it's my understanding, a Boone resident won the same contest last night, so next week will also be free for them. That's some nice free entertainment for two weeks in a row!

The first feature of the evening was the Dwarf/Mod Lites and it would see their event go flag to flag. Sixth place starter Eric Hendrickson jumped to the lead early and would go on to take the win. Behind him in second was Dusty Masolini and in third was the 15 car of Andy Hennigar who had started way back in twelfth position. Following Hennigar for fourth and fifth, would be the father/son duo of Cory Dennis, son and dad Rick Dennis.

A rare night for the SportMods with no B main. However, there were 27 cars starting the feature. It was twelfth position starter Scott Davis who took advantage of avoiding some mishaps on the track, and soon found himself chasing down the leaders. He would take that first place position and go home to the checkers first. Following close behind was Paul Nagle, who had also come from far back in the starting field and if I remember correctly, did lead for a while, to take second. Third was Jeremy Embrey, fourth Joel Bushore, and fifth place finisher was the 5M of Matthew Meinecke.

The program was running along at a good clip as the modifieds took to the track at 9:25 for their feature. Nineteen of the 21 cars signed in would start the A. With the pole sitter car of Stacy Warren not making the call, that would move Cedar Rapids driver Tim Stevens to the point position along side the 4P of Skeeter Paris. Those two would remain one-two for much of the race with Paris in front and stretching his margin at times. Crowd favorite, Todd Shute would be reeling in the top runners, but his night would suddenly end with smoke rolling from his car. In the meantime, Scott Baker would be making headway in the 15X car and would slip by Stevens to come home in second. Rounding out the top five was veteran Denny Pittman in fourth and Mike Molle in fifth.

What an exciting finish to the IMCA stock car main! Twenty cars started the feature with brothers Wayne and Jerry Gifford pacing the field early. However, moving up very fast was 10th place starter Trent Murphy from Jefferson. Jerry Gifford would eventually be given the black flag as his machine continued to produce smoke. Leading would be the 22 car of Wayne Gifford with hard charging Trent Murphy coming on strong! At the finish line, it was a near photo finish between those two, but Trent Murphy would take the win by less than a bumper!
Those IMCA stock cars are always fun to watch. What a great show they put on for us fans.

The final two events of the night would be two features for the IMCA hobby stocks. The first feature saw Matt Wahlert from Waukee lead for a while from his point starting position, but he soon found two fast moving cars hot on his heels--Richard Yaw II and Justin Maschke. As the laps wound down, it would be Richard Yaw II taking the feature win, with Maschke having to settle for second. In third place was Alan VanGorp coming from 11th place, Pat Mather from 10th place to take fourth, and Cody Gustoff finishing fifth.

In the second main for the hobby stocks it would be Scott Lograsso taking what I believe was his first feature win there. We have noted that he has been running very well this year. Making his way from 8th place to second, would be veteran Dean Hartwig in his 74J machine. Rounding out the top five was Daniel Hilsabeck in third, Brandon Pruitt in fourth and Matt McDonald in fifth. Hilsabeck would have his carburetor claimed by local Boone driver, Bobby Smith at the finally of the night.

Close finishes and a "Mr. Perfect" continues at Marshalltown

It was a beautiful night at the Marshalltown Speedway and the racing was great as well, making for a perfect combination for race fans. This would be billed the Cliff Chambers Memorial race which was postponed from an early rain cancelled date. Chambers was honored for his years of benefiting racing at the speedway.

The first feature event of the evening was the Dwarf/Mod Lites. Mike Morrill was attempting to continue his "Mr. Perfect" status at the track of winning every regular event as well as the Frostbuster feature. He started 12th in the main event and although he was picking off cars at a good clip, it was appearing that his streak just might come to an end. The 57 car of Tim Hennigar, with his fans cheering him on wildly, looked to be the one to bring this streak to an end. Unfortunately, Hennigar would find himself pushed high on the frontstretch, come to a rest high in turn one, ending his challenge. After the green flag flew once again, it was Morrill taking charge and he took the checkers first. As is his custom, he gave his trophy to a lucky youngster in the crowd--this one going to one from England! Runner-up in the feature was Charlie Brown, third went to Eric Hendrickson, fourth to Randy Bryan and fifth to Josh May.

The always popular SportMod class would have to have it's starting feature whittled down to 24 through a B main. Challenging for much of the race upfront were Paul Nagle, Kevin Sather, and Luke Wanninger. Wanninger took over the top spot and appeared to be on his way to a victory, but on the last lap, Sather reeled him in and made the pass for the win. Following him would be Wanninger and Nagle, last week's winner Scott Davis in fourth, and new to the track driver, Brett Meyer in fifth. Sather would also present his trophy to a lucky young fan.

The IMCA stock cars saw 25 cars in attendance with 21 able to start the 18-lap main. This race would go flag to flag and would be run in 5 minutes and 46 seconds, according to announcer Denny Grabenbauer. While the action was all around the track, those running up front would provide the excitement with Lake City's Dustin Smith taking the win, followed closely by Trent
Murphy and Dusty Vis. Finishing in fourth would be the "Chelsea Charger", Damon Murty and fifth was Tracy Gienger.

The modifieds alway produce an exciting race at Marshalltown, and Friday night was no exception! You can almost always count on Jimmy Gustin putting his car up front and when he grabbed the lead, it appeared a sure thing that he would be visiting Victory Lane again. However, Adam Larson, who came from well back in the pack and began his hard charge by running the topside, made an exciting race at the end. Larson held the lead on the white flag lap for a short time, but Gustin was able to regain the top spot, and come home the victor. Following Larson across the line was Jon Snyder for third place, Joey Schaefer in fourth and Danny Fetters in fifth.

Not to be outdone in providing excitement, the "wild things" IMCA hobby stocks put on quite the show at the finish! Jumping to the lead early, was the 19D of Dustin Elliott. However, putting pressure on behind him were several contenders and they were all fighting for position .
There were four cars coming out of turn four looking at the checkered flag, and it would be Grinnell's Gene Nicklas able to visit Victory Lane for the first time since 2004. Todd Reitzler
was able to come home in second, just squeaking by Dustin Elliott in third and also right there in fourth was Terry Shaffar. Justin Lichty came home in fifth. Nicklas was more than a little excited about being able to visit Victory Lane, which last time he did so he quipped, "didn't even have cement!"

A King of the Hill event for the IMCA modifieds ended the evening's activities with six cars giving it a shot. In the first round, it was Danny Fetters taking the two lap shoot out over Derek Reimer, Jon Snyder besting Todd Conrad and Jay Schmidt beating Vern Jackson. Second round saw Fetters versus Snyder with Snyder taking the checkers. The final test for the "king" status was Snyder against Schmidt, who had drawn a bye. The King of the Hill for the event ended with Jon Snyder taking top honors, as he beat Schmidt.

Next Friday at the Marshalltown Speedway, will be 410 Sprint Car driver Dusty Zomer challenging a yet to be determined modified driver as he visits the speedway in his Minuteman sponsored powerhouse. It's always an enjoyable night at Marshalltown, so try and catch a race there sometime during the season if you have not already done so.

Happy racing!

Most takes 1st Deery win and Logue takes modified checkers

We spent what has become a traditional Memorial Day at the Boone Speedway for the Deery Brothers Late Model race. The weather tried to put a damper on the races as it appeared rain could be moving toward the track. But once again, Boone had their luck hold and the races were completed just as sprinkles began as the final race of the evening ended. There were plenty of racecars filling the pits and by our count, 167 drivers competed after a couple of "stragglers" tagged the line-ups.

The IMCA Northern SportMods were the first to run their feature. This class is just exploding on the scene and every track we attend will usually have consulation features run to complete the A main field. The winner on this night would be the pole-sitter of Brett Meyer. Coming home second would be Mike Pruitt, third Jared Timmerman, fourth Luke Wanninger and fifth would be Scott Davis.

The Deery Brothers IMCA late models would run their feature next. It's always a treat to see the late models at Boone. There were 36 cars in attendance and through the four heat races and two B mains, the field of 20 cars was set, with four provisional starters added to the end of the A main. An eight car mishap between turns three and four with only three laps down, stopped the early action and resulted in those cars having to tag the field. Webster City driver, "Hollywood" Jason Hahne in his good looking #76 car, kept his pole-sitting car out front for over half of the 4o-lap race, but soon after, it was Red Oak's Josh Most taking over the lead. Most would keep his car out front and take his first ever Deery Brothers win. Hahne would take second; a best ever finish for him in the series. Third place finisher, Craig Roberts may have had his best finish in the series as well and behind him came a hard charging Todd Cooney in fourth and rounding out the top five was veteran Jeff Aikey.

Up next was the hobby stockers in their 15-lap feature. The two front-row starters would remain out front the entire race with Lake City's Devin Smith taking first and Daniel Hilsabeck
crossing the line in second. Michael Murphy would come home in third, Richard Yaw II in fourth, and Aaron Rudolph finished in fifth.

It was no stranger to Victory Lane in the modified race as John Logue put his familiar car #69 across the finish line first. He had battled with then leader Jimmy Gustin earlier, but just a slight bobble by Gustin, and Logue slipped by for the lead. Gustin would remain in second and take the runner-up position, while Cale Sponsler would make his way through the pack from starting in 18th place, to take third. Fourth was Bill Davis, Jr. who has been on a recent successful run, and fifth was hometown Boone driver, Russ Dickerson. Earlier in the evening, Logue was presented with a plaque and banner, commemorating his 100th career IMCA modified win he achieved early in April.

The final event of the evening was the IMCA stock cars. Battling up front early was Donavon Smith, his brother David Smith, Brian Efkamp and Bryan Trogdon. Those cars would make for an interesting race but later a mishap with a lap car would find the Smith brothers spinning in turn one losing many positions before they were able to resume. Trogdon would catch lap traffic, but as visiting announcer Blake Anderson, who was helping with the announcing duties for the special event said, "he's getting through traffic like a hot knife through butter". Trogdon took the feature win with Jefferson's Trent Murphy in second, veteran driver Brian Efkamp in third, "Hot" Rod Richards in fourth, and pole-sitter Tim French in fifth. Raindrops began to fall during the end of this feature, but the race was completed under green.

This traditional Memorial Day weekend show is always a treat but we always need to reflect on the true reason for the Holiday. Thanks to those men and women who served this great country to keep it free.

Marshalltown 5/22/09 and Boone 5/23/09

Friday night found promoter Toby Kruse happy to be able to get his regularly scheduled Marshalltown Speedway show in the books. Mother Nature had caused the two previous Friday shows to be cancelled.

Mike Morrill kept his perfect streak alive by taking the win in the Dwarf/Mod Lite main event. He once again, presented his trophy to one of the enthusiastic young fans that lined the fence in anticipation of being picked the recipient. Second place was taken by Tim Hennigar, third by Dusty Masolini, fourth was Eric Hendrickson and fifth was Josh May.

On this night, the other "Mr. Perfect" Kevin Sather, would find his streak come to an end in the SportMod feature. Sather had to settle for a fifth place as Boone, Iowa's Scott Davis put his car into Victory Lane. Behind Davis was young Jake Strayer, Paul Nagle, and fourth was Joel Bushore.

Twenty-three stock cars ran the feature, with four cars unable to start. Making his way forward and to the checkers first, was the familiar car 85 of Dustin Smith. Close behind in second was Trent Murphy, third was Dusty Vis, fourth Tracy Gienger and rounding out the top five was Marshalltown's own Jeff Wollam.

We love to watch the modifieds at Marshalltown and they always provide a great show. This feature would be run in just a little over 7 1/2 minutes. It was nice to see Adam Larson make his way through the pack from his 9th starting position, to take home another win at the Speedway. It was a battle with veteran Vern Jackson for a while, but in the end, he finished second, hard charging Jimmy Gustin finished third, young Nate Caruth took fourth, and hometown driver Brett Ladehoff, was fifth.

The evening ended with the hobby stock feature. Their main event for the night went to Devin Smith, brother of stock car feature winner, Dustin Smith. Second was scored to Todd Reitzler, third to Mike Timm, fourth to Michael Murphy and fifth to Eric Larson.

Saturday, we made our way to the Boone Speedway after attending a 90th birthday function for a special uncle up in Waterloo. Strange to be coming to the speedway from such a different direction. When we arrived, the pits and grandstands were filled with people; an unusual sight also, as we are always early arrivers.

The mighty little Dwarf Cars/Mod Lites ran their feature first and young Cory Dennis took the win for the second time this season. Second was Andy Hennigar, then came Cory's father Rick Dennis in third, and fourth was Andy's brother Tim Hennigar. Rounding out the top five was Mike Morrill who started way back in 18th place.

The SportMod feature found third generation driver, Jeremy Embrey take the checkers first, followed by Brian Miller, Iowa State student Geoff Olson in third, Matthew Meinecke in fourth and Tim Love in fifth.

Up next was the modifieds and Billy Davis, Jr. put his yellow #1 in Victory Lane tonight. Tim Stevens from Cedar Rapids kept a close trail on Davis, but had to settle for second. Third was Jake Durbin and fourth was "Toddzilla" Todd Shute. Fifth was Scott Baker in his beautiful #15x car. Earlier in the race, Shute and Kelly Lyons (a driver we remember from back in his hobby stock days) put on a fierce battle, only to have contact made between the two, which resulted in a flat for Lyons. Also on hand to try and tame the track, was a visiting driver Josh Foster from Montrose, Iowa down in far southeastern Iowa. The #77 of Foster made a good showing and came home with a 7th place finish right behind Randy Havlik. Foster had started in 21st position. I believe he can often be found running at 34 Raceway in Burlington and Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.

The stock cars had a night of attrition early. With only three laps down, the field was whittled to 14 cars and by lap 7, only 11 cars were left. Unfortunately, several incidents on the track saw many of those cars not only having to exiting the action for the night, but with much damage to repair in the days ahead. Jefferson, Iowa driver, Trent Murphy powered his way to the front from starting 11th with 12th place starter Donavon Smith right behind him across the finish line. Veteran Larry Crocheck came home in third, Michael Jaennette in fourth and Tim French in fifth.

The night concluded with two hobby stock features. Winning the first feature was Justin Maschke with Cody Gustoff in second, Daniel Hilsabeck in third, Justin Hopkins in fourth, and fifth was Aaron Rudolph. Feature number 2 saw a new face in Victory Lane...at least for us...in the 9R driver Matt Hudspeth. Hot on his heels was Richard Yaw II, third was Scott Lograsso, fourth Jason Purvis and fifth Alan VanGorp. Earlier in the heat races, the 00 car of Kyle Dirk's took a nasty roll off of turn three. He was transported to the hospital for observation, though he was alert and talking. We hope he will be fine and able to return to racing soon.

There is a lot of racing action this Memorial Day weekend at various tracks in our area and we hope to be attending some of them. The Ron Little Memorial race will be in action tonight, Sunday at Stuart Speedway and the Deery Brothers late models will be in Boone on Monday, just to name a few.

Tesch takes win at first ever USMTS show at Marshalltown

It was a beautiful, though very windy night for the first ever USMTS show at the Marshalltown Speedway. There were 42 modifieds competing on this past Wednesday evening at the highbanked quarter-mile track. There was a large crowd on hand as many had been anticipating this show for quite some time and they shouldn't have been disappointed! Track promoter Toby Kruse, and the USMTS promoter, Todd Staley, paired up to give the fans a great show. On hand to greet the fans and sign autographs, were NASCAR drivers Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace. They are both very personable people and always manage to entertain the crowd when being interviewed. Of course, they were also there to jump in their cars and try their hand at the track as well. Schrader qualified for the main event by taking second in his heat after starting fifth, but Wallace had to run a B main and successfully transferred on to the main event by finishing fourth in the second consy race.

The 40-lap feature for the USMTS cars saw 26 drivers start but after a mishap on the first lap, the field was down to 21. By the time the feature was completed, I believe only 12 cars were left running. The track was slick and shiny and you could see the cars reflecting on the track as they were running the high groove to catch the cushion. Kelly Shryock was a contender early, as he chased leader Tesch, but a slight jump of that cushion, cost him the lead and several cars got past him. After that, it was pretty much a two-car race between leader Jon Tesch from South Dakota and Oklahoma driver Jason Hughes. It was almost a repeat from the night before at Oskaloosa when those two battled it out and Jason Hughes took the win there. On this night however, things would switch and Jon Tesch came home the winner and Hughes had to settle for second place. Finishing third and coming from well back in the pack, was New Sharon driver Zack VanderBeek and fourth was young Ryan Gustin who had started just ahead of VanderBeek. Both of those drivers had good runs the previous night as well. Cory Dripps finished in fifth place and Kelly Shryock took sixth.

SportMod/B-mods, stock cars and hobby stock classes ran as well and were under IMCA/USRA rules. It made for a nice mixture of cars that you don't often see running together on the same track. The SportMod/B-mod class had an unfortunate incident happen on the frontstretch when young 14 year old Lauren Vis made hard contact with the wall. She was towed off while still sitting in the car, but soon after the ambulance was called to the pits. We understand she was taken to the hospital but heard she was later released. We certainly hope she is doing well and will be able to get back on the track soon. When racing action resumed, it was "Mr. Perfect", Kevin Sather wanting to keep his perfect wins for the season in tact at Marshalltown, and
once again he came home the victor. Quite the accomplishement. Sather gave his trophy for the night to a lucky young fan. Coming home second was the 21 of Kyle Brown followed by Scott Davis, Luke Wanninger and regular USRA driver, AJ Johnson in fifth.

The stock car class saw only 15 cars compete and only 13 cars started the main event. They were the class that ran their feature flag to flag. It was nice to see a familiar name back on the track at Marshalltown for the first time this year in his #2 car; Dave Atcher. He put his car out front early, and took the win in what we understood announcer Denny Grabenbauer to say was
his first in four years. Visiting driver Tom Schmitt finished a close second followed by another visitor, Curt Hook. Mike VanGenderen was fourth and Clay Deppe took fifth.

The hobby stock feature was finally completed with the green and white flag flying together after attempts with a green, white, checkered finish had failed. Getting the job done and coming home with the victory, was Grinnell driver, Todd Reitzler. Kenny Hansen was second, regular USRA driver Nathan Wood in third, Chad Koch fourth and Dustin Elliott in fifth.

We hope this was the first of many USMTS races at the Marshalltown Speedway. Thanks to Toby Kruse and Todd Staley for giving us fans a great night of racing.

Happy racing!

Jason Hughes wins USMTS in Osky

Another beautiful night greeted the good crowd at Oskaloosa for the USMTS race on Tuesday night. We always anticipate watching the outstanding USMTS drivers when they come to town to put on a show. There were 41 cars participating on this night and they did not disappoint the fans. The feature saw Marshalltown's young Ryan Gustin on the pole, alongside Watertown, South Dakota driver, Jon Tesch. There were 27 cars that started the feature with NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace joining the field as a provisional in his JEG #36 ride. He had been unable to get his machine fired to run his heat and missed qualifying through his B main by a couple of spots, but it was nice for the fans, that promoter Todd Staley allowed him to compete in the feature.

As always with a USMTS race, the action was fast and exciting from the get go. For the better part of the main event, Oklahoma driver, Jason Hughes chased Jon Tesch around the big half-mile oval. However, as the laps wound down, Hughes would catch and pass Tesch to take the win; his first ever at the Southern Iowa Speedway track. Coming home in an impressive third place was Ryan Gustin and behind him came two local New Sharon, Iowa drivers, Brad Pinkerton followed by Zach VanderBeek. I scored the 21M machine of Dean Mahlstedt (who had started well back in the pack and steadily made his way forward) in fifth, but it may have been the 7I car of "A Train", Al Hejna making the pass. Twenty-two cars were still running at the end.

The regular track classes also ran on this Tuesday night. It was nice to see young B Mod driver Tyler Groenendyk take his first win - and he beat out his father Leroy Groendyk who followed him across the finish line. Tyler gave a very nice interview in Victory Lane for his first time there and even got in the mention of his sponsors. No doubt, this will not be his only victory interview. Taking third was another youngster, Drew Lawson, in his good looking #D1 ride. Corey Brown took fourth, and Andrew Schroeder fifth.

Though the stock cars only had 13 cars, they were enjoyable to watch as they powered around the track. Leading much of the race was the 15K car of Kyle Harwood, a driver who ran the modified class last year. In the end, he had to settle for a fifth place finish, as Nathan Wood put his car up front and took the win, followed by Brian Mitrisin, Zach VanderBeek, and Matt Greiner in fourth.

The hobby stocks had a nice field of 20 cars participating. Nathan Wood put his car into Victory Lane for a second time this night, as he took the checkered flag first. I believe I understood announcer Tony Paris say that he is driving the hobby stock car for fellow hobby stock competitor TJ Henderson. Coming home in second was last week's winner Bobby Greene (no backflip for the fans this week)and third was visiting Cresco, Iowa driver Chris Hovden. Fourth was Kris Walker and fifth was Dale Porter.

A very enjoyable and comfortable weather night, concluded before 10:40 p.m. Tonight, May 20th, the USMTS "Cars and Stars", will make their way north for their first ever visit to the highbanks of the Marshalltown Speedway. We are so looking forward to watching them run the quarter-mile highbanked track. It should be fun!

NASCAR's Sprint Cup driver, Kyle Busch takes win at the Iowa Speedway

After a late night/early morning on Saturday, it was nice to have a short travel distance to the beautiful Iowa Speedway on Sunday. Iowa should be proud of that great facility that grew from the cornfields near Newton, Iowa. By the time we arrived at the track, the field of 37 cars had already been set for the running of the NASCAR Camping World East/West Series. Mother Nature decided to throw a little shower - an unpredicted one I think - into the mix for us. It didn't last long, but the track was wet and after driver introductions on the frontstretch, with "King" Richard Petty in attendance, the jet dryers were called to action. It was right at 5:50 when the racing action got underway, with polesitter, Kyle Busch, well--"off to the races". He was lapping the field with only 12 laps down and pretty much dominated the whole way and took home the win. He is the first NASCAR Sprint Cup driver to score a feature win at the track. Last year's race winner, Brian Ickler was no doubt hoping for a repeat win, but ended up having to settle for second place. Third place was the 17 car of David Mayhew who was also in contention all race long, followed by a familiar last name in racing, Jeffrey Earnhardt, grandson of the late great Dale Earnhardt. Fifth place went to Paulie Harraka and taking sixth was Grimes, Iowa's own 16 year old Brett Moffitt. Moffitt had quite a day and was picking off cars quite regularly and at one time was riding in third place. Still, sixth place was quite an accomplishment for this young and upcoming driver that we have often seen compete on the dirt tracks in our area.

It was fun to see winner Kyle Busch do a burnout in front of the grandstand, much to the delight of the fans. His comments in Victory Lane were quite complimentary of the track and facilities at Newton. Seems he took the trophy home with him in more than one piece as a track official dropped it. Hmmm? Did we hear that that track official happened to be Positively Racing's own Barry Johnson? You'll never live this one down Barry!

We were fortunate to enjoy the race from high up in one of the suites, and right on the start/finish line. What a spectacular view to say nothing about being out of the damp and more than a little chilly weather. We had a great time and look forward to more races this year at the Iowa Speedway. If you get the chance, you need to attend a race if you have not already done so. It's quite the racing facility for Iowa.

Happy racing!

Shute, Davis and Trogdon score victories at Boone

It was a full and long night of racing at Boone on Saturday night. Since Marshalltown was once again rained out on Friday, as well as Des Moines, there were a few "travelers" who were wanting to get a race in for their weekend. The pits were filled with 164 racecars.

The Dwarf/Mod-Lites had more than a full field of cars start their feature. It was nice to see a veteran Dwarf driver Cliff Barber back behind the wheel in what appeared to be the 01 machine of David Schmalzreid. The main event yielded 3-wide racing of the little cars, and was very entertaining. In the end, it was the 57 car of Tim Hennigar taking the win, followed on his heels by brother Andy Hennigar, Eric Hendrickson in third, Jeff Stensland in fourth, and Rick Dennis in fifth.

The IMCA SportMods once again had to be weeded down to 24 cars in the starting feature by a B Main. This class just seems to be exploding on the scene. There was 3-wide racing again to provide the crowd a good show. Coming from his 11th place starting postion to take the win, was Boone's own Scott Davis and chasing him was Paul Nagle, Matthew Meinecke, Jared Timmerman and Austin Lucas.

The IMCA modifieds started 27 cars. It was a "catch Tim Stevens" race and that is exactly what Todd Shute did as he made the pass on the last lap. The top five were Todd Shute, Tim Stevens, Denny Pittman, Randy Havlik, and Josh "Happy" Gilman. The 33M car of Mike Molle made a rather spectacular frontstretch slide on his roof move, with a bounce or two thrown in. Thankfully, he was able to exit the car unhurt, to the applause of the grandstand.

The Class to Tough to Tame, the IMCA stock cars, were up next. They also had to run a B Main event to whittle their feature down to the 24 starting field. Damon Murty started on the pole position and it was his race until lap 8 when he came to a halt on the track and his night was over. There was a good race for the top positions when the racing got going again, but in the end it was Bouton's own Bryan Trogdon taking the checkered flag first, followed closely by Trent Murphy, Robert Stofer, Donavon Smith and multi-time track champion, Steve Jackson.

The evening ended with two Hobby Stock features. The 18 year old Jefferson, Iowa driver, Michael Murphy, took the win in the first feature with Chris Hupp in second, Richard Yaw II in third, Daniel Hilsabeck in fourth, and rounding out the top five was Alan VanGorp. The second feature for the Hobby Stocks provided spectators with some 4-wide racing at the end of the night. Pat Mather captured himself another feature win by coming from the 11th starting position, with Devin Smith, Matt Drottz,
Aaron Rudolph and Ray Stock, Jr. following him across the finish line.

Racing action did not conclude until 11:47 p.m., but it was another entertaining night of racing that we once again saw at the Boone Speedway.

Happy racing!

Southern Iowa Speedway Season Opener

It was a beautiful night for watching a race at the big half mile in Osky. We can say it was the most comfortable we've been so far this racing season here in Iowa. It was a little strange to be sitting there on a Thursday night however, instead of the regular Wednesday night. Promoter Todd Staley made the call to postpone on Wednesday due to the rain, and race on Thursday. Good call! We got to see some great racing action and watch some veteran drivers as well as some newcomers, try to tame the track.

The B modifieds had 19 cars in attendance and some new faces among the competitors..for us anyway. It was a veteran racer who took the win however, as Kevin Fee from Knoxville took his number 52 machine to victory. Following him across the line was Josh Modde, young Cayden Carter, Tyler Groenendyk and Mike Shelton. However, the 10 car of Carter was later dq'd for "a non-working rev limiter" ...as announced by Tony Paris. Jason McDaniel made his debut at the track in a B mod, switching from his previous hobby stock class and looked impressive at times. Look for him to visit the winner's circle before the season is over.

The stock cars at Osky are FAST! On this night, 13 of the cars were on hand and it was 3 wide racing at times. Zack VanderBeek kept his car out front and stretched the lead to take home the win. Behind him came Mike VanGenderen, Matt Greiner, and Brian Mitrisin who put on a fierce battle for position. Nathan Wood rounded out the top five.

The hobby stocks took to the track next for their feature. Bobby Greene took the win and gave the crowd his famous back flip from the car in Victory Lane. Dale Porter was second, TJ Henderson third, Andy Coleman fourth, and Kris Walker came home fifth. Rookie driver Dan Dyer in the #2D car, was impressive and though he did have a mishap in turn two which brought him to a stop, it was with much appreciation from the crowd, that he fired it up and continued on instead of bringing the racing action to a halt.

The final event of the evening was the USRA modifieds. Once again a familiar face visited the winner's circle as Zack VanderBeek took the win. It was noted that he has switched colors of his machines this year in both the stock and modified class. He was no longer in the familiar red, but in nice looking orange machines. Coming home second was another veteran driver, Brad Pinkerton, who no doubt will be in Victory Lane several times as he looked strong. Richie Gustin, another very fast car, came home third, followed by Scott Dickey and the visiting Missouri driver, David Holder.

It was an entertaining night of racing and the program was done by 9:30, always a plus for the fans. Next week, there will also be a "switch" on racing days, as Osky will be running a USMTS show on TUESDAY, and no racing there on Wednesday. Marshalltown Speedway will be running a USMTS show at their improved facility on Wednesday.

Boone Speedway 5/9/09

After the cancellation of racing at Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night, we were eager to see some racing at Boone. Race fans and drivers as well, need their racing "fix"! The pits were filled with 167 racecars on Saturday night.

Up first for their feature, was the Dwarf/Mod Lites and they started 28 cars. Rick Dennis, who we learned is a roofer, took advantage of his front row starting position, and went home with the win. Charlie Brown came home in second, followed by Ed Zehm who started in 10th, fourth was Mike Kennedy, and making his first appearance of the year at Boone, was the familiar orange car of Troy Hudson who was fifth.

The SportMods on this night, had 42 cars compete. Once again, they were the only class running B's...two of them. Randy Roberts, a former hobby stock driver, took one of the B features, and Kyle Bentley from Independence, took the second B feature. A few Independence area drivers came to "play" at Boone on Saturday night, when that track was forced to cancel their weekly program due to the rain. The feature saw several incidents which caused the yellow flag to fly. When the checkered flag finally flew, it was Redfield, Iowa driver Mike Pruitt taking it first. He made his way nicely through the pack to take a well deserved win. Local Boone driver Scott Davis came home second, followed by Paul Nagle, Jeremy Embrey and Newton, Iowa's Jake Strayer.

Everyone always anticipates the modified feature. When the polesitter, Jacob Murray did not appear, it was Russ Dickerson who inherited the point, sitting beside Billy Davis, Jr. to his outside. There were still 26 cars starting the feature. Billy Davis, Jr. had a great night all evening long, starting with his heat win and going on to a strong feature win. Behind him were several cars battling for postion. Kelly Lyons and Russ Dickerson finished second and third after some good racing between the two, and then it was Cale Sponsler and Denny Pittman.

The IMCA stock cars, known as "The Class too Tough to Tame", started their feature with 26 cars, and one unable to start. What a battle it was between Lake City's Donavon Smith and Jefferson's, Trent Murphy! Those two would battle back and forth, but in the end, it would be Donavon Smith taking the win and Murphy having to settle for second. Next across the line was Bryan Trogdon, veteran driver Robert Stofer, and newcomer, Josh Daniels from Des Moines.

The evening ended with two Hobby Stock features. The first feature saw the 25M of Michael Murphy take the win. It's not too often you see white wall tires, but those flashy tires caught my eye on this night. Taking second was Ames driver Matt Drottz who had a great run. Coming home third was Jason Stringer, followed by the m15 of Pat Mather and the 11 of Beau Kaplan. Pat Mather would have his motor claimed by the 20T of Richard Yaw, II who finished well back in the pack.

The second Hobby Stock feature ended with a very close finish, but Alan VanGorp prevailed with Devin Smith taking second. Behind them was Scranton, Iowa's Aaron Rudolph, Jesse McCollaugh and Kyle Dirks.

It was nearly 11:30 before the final checkered flag flew, but we had certainly enjoyed the evening's entertainment. We would like to say, "thank you" to all of the drivers that put on a show for us fans, week in and week out. You are all appreciated.

Weekend Racing - Marshalltown 5/01/09 and Boone 5/02/09

Friday night we traveled to our "home track", the Marshalltown Speedway. It was a night of double features in three classes due to the previous weeks rainout. That was a nice bonus for the new attendees, one of which we know came from Indiana, for the night's entertainment. The make-up hobby feature was the first on the track. It started the night off with a thrilling finish which saw Dustin Elliott take the win at the line over Eric Knutson. Following next was Chad Koch, Michael Murphy and Terry Shaffar. The "Class Too Tough To Tame", the IMCA stock cars ran their make-up feature next. Kellogg, Iowa's Clay Deppe lead the race early, but Sean Johnson, who had started in the 10th place, made his way to the front in fine fashion, and took over the top spot. Deppe settled for second, followed by Jeff Wollam, Trent Murphy and Don Vis. The final make-up feature was the IMCA modifieds. Richie Gustin, driving the 99M car of Tim Murty, took the win, followed by Marshalltown's own Brett Ladehoff, Troy Cordes in 3rd, and Adam Larson and Joey Schaefer rounding out the top five.

Those make-up features were a great way to begin our night, but there was still a whole program of action awaiting us. Going into the night, two drivers were maintaining perfect records for winning their divisions so far this year. In the Dwarf/Mod Lites, Mike Morrill, had to come from his 12th starting postion, to keep his record perfect, and take the win. Coming home after him were Mike Kennedy, Eric Hendrickson, Andy Hennigar and James May. Mike Morrill always gives his trophy to a lucky youngster in the crowd. I'm sure he has gained many fans from this nice gesture. I recall another driver often doing this in the "old days", when the children would line the fence to get the trophy from modified driver Bill Davis, Sr.

Another "Mr. Perfect" trying to retain his title, was Kevin Sather, in the SportMod class. He was not to be denied his title as well, and made his way to the front and took the win followed by Scott Davis, Geoff Olson, David Schlicht, and Brad Iverson. Promoter Toby Kruse has raised the payout to the winning driver who can beat either of the perfect drivers if they are still running at the finish. The "bounty" will be an extra $75 on Dwarf/Mod Lite driver Mike Morrill and $125 on SportMod driver Kevin Sather.

The Stock Car feature saw an impressive run to the front by Brian Irvine, a former IMCA Supernational's winner. Second place was Steve Meyer, followed by Sean Johnson, Trent Murphy, and Dustin Smith.

The dust had been flying for sometime, but the track was remaining smooth and racy, but slick, when the modified's pulled on the track for their feature. Ames, Iowa's Adam Larson, took home another impressive win by making his way to the front from a ways back in the pack of a nice field of cars. Crossing the line behind him was Troy Cordes, Mike O'Lear, Jon Snyder, and Nate Caruth.

Finishing the night's racing was the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Driver Adam Gebel took the checkers first, followed by Gary Pfantz, Terry Shaffar, Dustin Elliott and Mike Timm. Gebel would have his motor claimed by the 43 car of Nic Shearer.

Boone was up next on our travels on Saturday. They had cancelled their previous week's show, due to rain. The track remained very racy all night long, with several racing grooves. Although they did their famous farming session, we're not sure it would have even been necessary on this night.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite cars were the only class having to run a B Main this week. It was nice to see their feature go flag to flag. Cory Dennis took the win, with Tim Hennigar, Charlie Brown, James May, and Andy Hennigar behind him.

The SportMod 18 lap feature saw several yellow flags flying before they were able to complete their race. In the end it was the 5M car of Matthew Meineceke crossing in first place but he was later disqualified for being too light. That would give the win to Jared Timmerman. Following him would be Scott Davis, Kevin Sather, David Schlicht and Joel Bushore.

The IMCA stock cars found a couple of Newton, Iowa drivers in the mix up front as Michael Jaennette and Mike VanGenderen battled for a while. In the end, it was Jaennette taking the win, Steve Jackson in second, Mike VanGenderen settling for third, Trent Murphy fourth, and Lake City driver, Donavon Smith taking fifth.

The IMCA modifieds saw a veteran driver lead the entire race from the pole position. Terry Pruitt in his number 78 machine, won the race with John Logue in hot pursuit, and Scott Baker, Cale Sponsler and Mike Molle rounding out the top five. It was nice to see Todd Shute racing after what we understand was a terrible incident at the State Fairgrounds Speedway the previous night. From what we heard, his own car was destroyed. He jumped in to the 3Z car of Randy Havlik, and although he did not have a successful night, it is always nice to see racing family, helping their own. It's one of the things we love about racing.

Two Hobby Stock features ended the night's racing. The first feature was won by Daniel Hilsabeck followed by Brandon Pruitt, Alan VanGorp, Cody Gustoff and Justin Maschke. The second feature saw the m15 of Pat Mather take the win and following him were Chris Hupp, Beau Kaplan, Matt McDonald, and Dean Hartwig.

Full results for Boone are listed below. We look foward to bringing you many more future racing results. Happy racing!
