Richie Gustin Repeats and Smith Brothers Win at Marshalltown

On Friday night, it was back to Marshalltown Speedway for another regular night of racing at the high-banked quarter-mile. Great weather saw a nice crowd on hand making it even pleasant enough for our grandson Brycen to make his first ever race at less than three month's old. Two of the Smith brothers showed their strength as did Richie Gustin who took a repeat win from last week.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite's were, as usual, the first to run their main event. Mike Kennedy got to the lead early on from starting about 5th but the man on the move was certainly Tim Hennigar as he started 9th and was in third by the first lap! Several yellow flags flew during the duration of the race, shaking up the field. As the checkers flew, it was Kennedy holding off the familiar #6 of Mike Morrill, third was Tim Hennigar, who wasn't lacking the support of his enthusiastic fans who sat near us, fourth went to Josh May and fifth to his dad, James May.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran their feature next. Tonight, there was no denying the young man from Adel, Dylan Book, as he led the entire race from the pole. A hard charging Zach Rawlins made a valiant effort running the topside attempting to catch Book, but had to settle for the runner up spot. Third place car was that of Scott Davis who had a great run after having to go to the work area for repairs, tag the field, and flying through the pack. Point leader, Eric Flander kept that lead by finishing fourth, and fifth went to Austin Lucas.

Promoter Toby Kruse offered double money to any heat winner on the night to start at the tail and win. In the IMCA stock car class, Dustin Smith took that challenge. Having seen him do this before, we thought those odds were pretty good. Even making it sweeter was the fact that he would have had to start in the twelveth position as point leader anyway, but with other cars unable to make the call, (18 ran heats) his starting spot ended up only being 14th---still no small feat. Once again, Smith seemed to drive effortlessly through the field to take the lead with only 8 laps down. Smith kept that lead, driving away from the pack, to get his second feature win of the year at the Marshalltown Speedway. Michael Jaennette had a good run to take second from starting back in 7th as he held off third place Trent Murphy who started near the back. Murphy was declared "too light" in his heat race, so was relegated to the back of the starting field. Fourth went to Tracy Gienger who ran upfront all night, and fifth went to Jeff Wollam in the 3W.

It was Richie Gustin repeating from last week, as he got himself another win---his third at the track this year. Gustin led nearly from the beginning of the contest as pole sitter Daniel Hilsabeck chased him. Hilsabeck, still in second with two laps to go, met with an incident on a restart situation, that sent him far back in the finish. Mike O'Lear had a great run as he finished in that runner up spot, third went to Scott Simatovich, fourth to Adam Larson and fifth to visitor from Sioux City, Chris Abelson in the 1X car. It was nice to hear Richie Gustin offer thanks to the veterans as he spoke in Victory Lane, on this Memorial Day weekend. As a note, another Gustin, that being brother Jimmy, ran the feature...finishing in 7th I believe...with what could almost be called, "half a car" as announcer Blake Anderson described it. This resulted from a mishap in his heat race when he had no where to go when a car ahead of him slowed. He was able to stop and avoid much contact, but another car then in turn, slammed into Gustin. When he appeared for the feature event, nearly the entire back half of his car was minus any sheetmetal making for quite an unusual sight.

The final A main for the evening was the IMCA hobby stocks. While the last couple of weeks have been virtually caution free, that was not the case on this night. The 12K of Eric Knutson led until another Smith brother, Devin Smith, came into the equation. After a battle for a couple of laps, Smith took the lead away and then went on to the win and Knutson getting second. Third went to Todd Reitzler who held off fourth place finisher Michael Murphy and rounding out the top five was Terry Shaffar.

So ended another fun night of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway. For full results and other information about the track, be sure and check www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Another full night of racing will find us back at the track next Friday night. Happy racing!

Ryan Gustin Takes USMTS Win and Woods Wins Stock Car Iron Man Series

We finally got back on track for our regular Wednesday night of racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway. It has been our home on Wednesdays for years and years. Great weather...first time without having a sweatshirt on...saw a nice crowd in attendance for Todd Staley's USMTS show and the first ever USRA Iron Man Challenge Series for stock cars. The B modifieds and hobby stocks also ran.

The first feature to take to the big half-mile "monster" was the B mods. Mike Wanders and LeRoy Groenendyk paced the field but soon it was a different Groenendyk taking over the number one spot. Tyler Groenendyk, on the night of his 21st birthday, put it out front and never looked back. Scott Davis made his way down from his hometown of Boone and set his sites on trying to reel in the birthday boy. He had started well back in the field and got himself into the runner up position for a short time, until Osky youngster Cayden Carter made the pass around Davis. When the checkers flew it was Tyler Groenendyk giving himself a win for his birthday, Carter kept second, Davis crossed in third, fourth was Mike Wanders and fifth was Mike Shelton. After the race, two of the top finishing cars, Carter and Davis, were asked to return to the track and run three laps for what we understood was to test the rev limiters on their crate motors. Upon checking www.heartlandmotorsports.com and their results for the evening, it appears Davis was relegated to the last finishing spot, thus moving the fourth and fifth finishers up a spot and adding Curtis VanderWal as the fifth place car.

The newly formed USRA Iron Man Challenge Stock Car Series saw only thirteen cars put in an appearance. The competition however, was excellent. Two veteran drivers sat on the pole; Steve Jackson and Rick Gustin. Jackson crossed the line in first at two laps down but Greg Elliott in the #1 car was the leader at seven laps down with northern Iowa driver Mike Bergan chasing him and local favorite Nathan Wood chasing Bergan. Wood was in a new car which had a definite different look to it, appearing more like a pro-street or sportsman car. On the backstretch, with about twelve laps down, it was the 20Dub car of Shane Weller threading the needle into second place as he battled the #412 car of Mark Elliott, Rick Gustin in the #62 and Mike "The Flying Dutchman" VanGenderen in his #57V. Weller was trying his hardest to make the pass on Wood, sending rooster tails of dirt flying as he manuvered the high side of the corners, but he couldn't make it happen. Wood took the win and was crowned the first ever winner in the new Iron Man series, Weller was second, Mark Elliott held on for third, with fourth going to Rick Gustin and fifth to Mike VanGenderen. It was nice to see a name from the past, Rich Vogt in the #38 car, back on the Southern Iowa Speedway track as he garnered an eighth place finish.

The USRA hobby stocks ran their feature next. Derek Kirkland took command early from starting outside row one. Steve Allen chased him through lap eight but fell back after a restart when a yellow flew for debris on the track. At the checkers, it was Kirkland taking the win, Andy Coleman was runner up, Kris Walker took third, fourth went to Steve Allen and fifth to the #558 of Jim Hughes....another name from the past who has made many laps around the big half-mile, in a stock car and a modified if memory serves me correctly.

By my count, 42 modifieds competed on the night. The twenty-six car starting field was completed through two B main events with six advancing from each. Unable to make the call was the #111 of Bumper Jones out of New Mexico allowing the seventh place finisher in his B Main, #5 Steve Holzkamper, to join the field at the tail. It's always a stirring sight to see those modifieds get into their four-wide formation, American flags waving, as they salute the fans on their parade lap. Love it!

Ryan Ruter was the lucky recipient of drawing the #1 spot and young Ryan Gustin drew #2. Gustin flew into the lead, Ruter chasing him but Gustin pulled away. A yellow flew which no doubt Ruter was glad to see as it tucked him in closer to the elusive Gustin on the restart. When the green flew, New Sharon's Zach VanderBeek was the car making the move into second as he was able to pass Ruter and the chase was on to catch Gustin. Gustin seemed to rocket off of corner two and pulled away. Another yellow flew with only three laps to go in the 30-lap feature but Gustin kept that lead without much trouble when action resumed. He went on to victory with VanderBeek having to settle for second. Al Hejna came home in third and was no doubt the hard charger of the race as he started back around the sixteenth spot. Fourth went to another New Mexico driver, the 1st car of Johnny Scott and fifth went to Steve Wetzstein. Ryan Gustin was a happy camper in Victory Lane as he enjoyed the spoils of a well deserved win.

It was nice to get back to our Wednesday night "stomping grounds" and look forward to many more nights of racing at the half-mile in Osky. For more complete information check out www.heartlandmotorsports.com, www.rlpromotions.com/oskaloosa and check out Tapfan's Tours for his take on the racing action last night at www.positivelyracing.com. Happy racing!

Weekend Racing Recap - Marshalltown, Boone, and Iowa Speedway

We use to think nothing of going racing multiple nights in a row, but after a busy past week, we can sure tell we aren't as young as we use to be! After the mid-week races at Marshalltown for the Deery and Wednesday at Independence for the inaugural Hawkeye Dirt Tour, we took a day off on Thursday and then headed into a three-race stretch to close out the week. Friday we took in the action at our "home" track, the Marshalltown Speedway. Next up was Boone, our home away from home on Saturdays, and then attended Sunday's NASCAR East/West Series at the Iowa Speedway.

Marshalltown - 5-21-10

An added "extra" at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday evening, was the mini sprints with thirteen cars strong. They did put on a nice show and with very little interruption in the action as we have so often noted with sprint racing. One thing going for these little guys is they have a starter and do not have to rely upon a push to start. Not being familiar at all with these drivers, we can only state that the #76 car of Brad Comergys was the winner. From Brad's statement in Victory Lane, they all loved the 1/4 mile at Marshalltown and the drivers were all appreciative for the opportunity to race there.

"The Bus Man"(he drives a school bus) Mike Kennedy took the win in the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature...his first of the year at the track. Josh May, Tim Hennigar, Eric Hendrickson and Mike Morrill rounded out the top five.

Eric Elliott was the winner in the IMCA Northern SportMod main event. A good battle ensued between Dylan Book, Kyle Brown, and Eric Elliott early on. Book developed mechanical issues and had to exit later. At the checkers, it was Kyle Brown taking the runner-up position, third was Eric Flander, fourth went to Cayden Carter, and fifth to Brett Moffitt. More on Moffitt later during his race at the Iowa Speedway.

The IMCA Stock Cars still remain one of our favorite classes. A newbie to IMCA racing, pretty much had it covered from start to finish as Nathan Wood was the winner. It would be Wood's first ever IMCA stock feature win. From his remarks after the race, he will be trying for the rookie of the year title. Trent Murphy took second, third was point leader Dustin Smith, fourth
went to Tracy Gienger and fifth to Jeff Wollam.

In the IMCA modified feature, it was a familiar name visiting Victory Lane as Richie Gustin took home another win. As I look back over the winners we've seen in this division just this year, the name "Gustin" is often there, be it Richie or brother Jimmy. A remarkable racing family and fun to watch! Runner up was Luke Wanninger with third going to Adam Larson, fourth to Denny Rosenberg and fifth to David Brown with his best run of the year.

The final event, the IMCA hobby stocks, saw a first time winner as Jeff Gunderson took the checkered flag. Following him across the line was Eric Larson, Michael Murphy, Todd Reitzler, and Devin Smith.

For a more complete take on the night's racing events, check out Tapfan's Tours at www.positivelyracing.com. Thanks for being my shield from the rearend plug that got airborne off the track and into the stands...and into your arm! This happened during the modified feature and left quite the knot on Tapfan's arm!

Boone - 5-22-10

On to night two of weekend racing as we headed the vehicle toward the Boone Speedway. It was a breezy night, but this time the wind was to the backside of the frontstretch grandstands, making for a much more pleasant night for all, on that side of the track anyway. The nicer weather conditions also brought a good crowd.

Taking the checkered flag in the Dwarf/Mod Lite division, was the OB of Colby Oberembt. He led the entire race as Josh May tried in vane to catch him. Following May in third place was Travis Stensland, fourth went to Dusty Masolini and fifth was Matthew Goodin.

It was a good race for the IMCA Northern SportMods again this week. After a couple of cars got together right at the flagstand on the start of the race, we also saw more yellows fly during the course of the action. Some of those yellows and ensuing restarts, saw a lot of action and position changes. The eventual winner, Geoff Olson made a great move on one restart to pass several cars for position. Olson started back in eleventh spot to make his way to Victory Lane. Runner up was Eric Elliott who had started just ahead of Olson, third went to Rick Ringgenberg, fourth to Darren Huntley and fifth to Scott Davis. Those top drivers put on quite the action packed race for the fans.

The IMCA modified looked to be a repeat from last week as Tim Stevens and Bill Davis, Jr. battled up front. Last week, Stevens had mechanical problems to end his chance for a win, though Davis prevailed. This week, Davis was hungry for another win as he swung around leader Stevens with two laps to go. Davis got the win under the yellow/checkered when two cars got together in turn four after the white flag had flown. Stevens came home in second, third went to the car you can always pick out in a crowd, the #69X of Jon Snyder, Kelly Lyons picked up the fourth position, and fifth went to Cale Sponsler.

The stock cars provided the fans with lots of excitement once again. Racing was tight and fast just like last week's action. It was another night of wondering just when something was going to happen. Fortunately, though there was some minor incidents, cars recovered and continued on. To put things in perspective, it was a race that saw veteran Steve Jackson become a lap car, which is very rare. Front runners, Trent Murphy, Rod Richards, Mike VanGenderen and Mike Munson battled furiously. Murphy prevailed to take the win, Munson was second, third went to VanGenderen, fourth to Donavon Smith and fifth to Larry Crocheck. Richards and Wayne Gifford got together in corner four on the final lap, to prevent them from a top five finish.

Only one A main was run for the hobby stocks. Several yellows flew during the race but didn't hinder Tyler Pickett from crossing the line in first place. Pat Mather chased Pickett to the flag to get second, third went to Scott Lograsso, fourth to Michael Murphy and fifth to Kyle Dirks.

Next up at the Boone Speedway will be a regular points race on May 29th, followed on Monday by the Memorial Day Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models. Also running for points on Monday will be the SportMods, Dwarfs, Hobby Stocks and Stock Cars. Monday, hot laps are 4 p.m. with racing at 5. Check http://www.raceboone.com/ for more information.

Iowa Speedway - 5-23-10

The Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa is where we headed on Sunday. We arrived just as qualifying was winding up for the 200 lap feature to come. The NASCAR K & N East/West Series sponsored by the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa saw young drivers with famous connections scattered throughout the field. More on that later.

The pole sitter was the #17 car driven by David Mayhew. We were told he has some dirt track background and has competed at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during the IMCA Duel In The Desert annual event. Through at least the first 50 laps, he seemed to be on a Sunday drive, maintaining a comfortable lead over second place runner, the #00 of Ryan Truex, who also cruised along comfortably. Pit stops changed things up later on of course, and the man on the move was Brett Moffitt, 17 year old from Grimes, Iowa. He is one of the Joe Gibbs developmental drivers in the series along with his teammate in the #18 car, Max Gresham. This series is just for developmental drivers and we noted many of them are still students around 17 and 18 years old. We watched Moffitt picking off cars and eventually finding himself out front about lap 145 and still leading with thirteen laps to go. That's when a red flag situation for clean up of a large fluid spill, froze the field. When racing resumed, Moffitt's teammate, the #18 of Max Gresham, slipped by him and it was looking like a 1-2 finish for the J. D. Gibbs team. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be as contact was made when Corey LaJoie made the pass, and it sent Moffitt spinning in turn two. The race ended in a green-white-checkered dash to the finish line with Max Gresham getting the win. Gresham, who just turned 17 the end of April, took his second straight win in the series. Runner up went to Ty Dillon from Lewisville, N.C., third to 18 year old Darrell Wallace, Jr., the only Afro-American to win in this series, fourth was Corey LaJoie who voiced his regret in getting into Moffitt late in the race, and fifth to David Mayhew who had run strong all day long.

What could have been a hot, sunny day turned out to be a breezy, cloud-covered day, making for very pleasant viewing of the entertaining race. As mentioned earlier, there were a lot of drivers with famous name connections and we will try to mention the ones we noticed. Ty Dillon is the grandson of Richard Childress, Corey LaJoie is the son of Randy LaJoie, Kevin Swindell in the #9 is the son of Sammy Swindell who had just won in the 410 sprint class at the Knoxville Speedway the previous night, and the #00 of Ryan Truex is the younger brother of Martin Truex, Jr. For a full recap of the race, check http://www.iowaspeedway.com/.

So ended our three-night race run, and an enjoyable one it was. Upcoming this week, we plan to head to the Southern Iowa Speedway on Wednesday night. The USMTS modifieds will be in action and it will kick off the inauguaral Dart Iron Man Challenge race for the USRA stock cars. Also on the program will be the USRA B-mods and the USRA hobby stocks. More details can be found at www.rlpromotions.com/oskaloosa. Until next time, happy racing!

First Ever Hawkeye Modified Dirt Tour Kicks Off Successfully!

We headed east to the Independence Motor Speedway for the inaugural Hawkeye Dirt Tour for the IMCA modifieds on Wednesday evening. It was a fun night of watching drivers from all areas of the state and beyond. Though 59 cars were announced to be on hand, we observed only 58, but whichever, it was a great turnout. Two other classes, the SportMods and hobby stocks, were also in competition.

The SportMod feature was won by Vinton's Kurt Hogan in his MR09 ride followed by Kaleb Bentley, Austin Kaplan, Tyler Droste and Danny Dvorak. I believe all of those drivers have raced at the track this year and also run at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton.

Six heat races, three B mains and one track provisional, Jerry Luloff, set the starting field of 25 for the first ever running of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour. Drawing the lucky pill for the number one starting spot was Ed Thomas and talented Ryan Gustin, youngest of the Gustin clan racing in the modified class, sat along side. It was rough going in the beginning of the race with restart after restart as the yellow flag flew. Gustin had little trouble in putting his 19GX ride for the night (instead of his usual 19R number) out front and Jay Noteboom, piloting the 87 car usually raced by Joel Bushore, settled into second. Around lap 10, Montrose, Iowa driver Josh Foster, who had started in 10th place, had been steadily making his way to the front and managed to pass Noteboom, and later Gustin, to take over the point position. Richie Gustin was riding in fourth as the white flag flew with Michael Long in fifth. Josh Foster made it back to the checkers first to put his name in the books as the first ever Hawkeye Dirt Tour winner. Ryan Gustin took second but third place runner, Jay Noteboom developed mechanical problems as he entered turn four, giving over third place to Richie Gustin, fourth to Michael Long and fifth to Nate Caruth who had started well back in the starting field. Mark Schulte spurted by a coasting Noteboom, to take sixth as did the 37 of Mike Jergens who was scored in seventh. Noteboom slowly crossed the finish line in eighth.

The hobby stocks capped the night's events with their feature race. We were not familiar with many of these drivers but the #19 of August Bach was the winner, followed by the #98 of Kyle Anderson, the #77 of Rod Grother, the #09 of Brad Forbes, and fifth went to Quinton Miller in #73.

We enjoyed a great night of watching a diversified field of modifieds, many we don't often get the chance to see run regularly. We noticed that drivers from the southeast part of the state and race at the Lee County Speedway had a great contingency of drivers on hand. We believe both Foster and Long are regulars there as well as Bill Roberts (5R), Rich Smith (8), Andy Krieger (58), Jeff Waterman (71W) and Brandon Savage (47S). It was especially enjoyable to share the event in the stands with good friends and some fellow PR bloggers. We also saw other familiar faces in the stands from across the state. Be sure and check out "Back Stretch" and "Tapfan's Tours" at http://www.positivelyracing/ and as Ryan Clark shared the mic duties, he will no doubt have his views up at "In Staging". Thanks to tour director Bucky Doren for getting this series up and running. It was a great success! We look forward to future shows. Check http://www.dirttour.com/ for information and the schedule. Happy racing!

Marshalltown Deery Brothers Goes to Aikey

It was a full house for the Marshalltown Speedway's Deery Brothers race this past Tuesday night. Beautiful weather greeted fans and drivers as the late models came to town for what has become a much anticipated event at the speedway in recent years.

Support classes for the late model headliners were the Dwarf/Mod Lites, Dirt Trucks, and IMCA Sportmods. The Dwarfs were the first to run their feature. Joel Huggins took command right from the start as he led the pack from his pole position and maintained it for the entire race. Josh May chased Huggins to the finish, coming home in second. Third went to Tim Hennigar, fourth to Mike Morrill and fifth to Jimmy May.

The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks made their first appearance of the year. Pat Fagen took the win with Bryan Nevins, Jr. taking the runner up spot. We recall watching Bryan Nevins, Sr. racing around the dirt tracks in our area for many years, so yet another family tradition continues. Third place went to Ed Nelson, fourth to Bret Moyer and fifth to Lou Sipolt, KGGO radio personality.

Twenty-nine IMCA Northern SportMods were on hand. Their feature event seemed plagued by incidents causing the yellow to fly. Talented young driver, Brett Moffitt led all of the circuits to capture yet another of his numerous wins. Fourteen year old Cayden Carter in the #10 car challenged him a bit until on a restart around nine laps down, he spun in turn one. This would end his chances for a win. Zach Rawlins and Kyle Brown fought it out for second and third position with Rawlins getting the advantage and come home in the runner up spot, Brown having to settle for third. Fourth was Jesse Sobbing and fifth was Rod McDonald.

It's always a thrill to see the late models as they salute the fans on their parade lap around the quarter-mile of the Marshalltown Speedway. Forty laps awaited the anxious crowd as the 24 mighty machines approached the waving green flag. Early leader was pole sitter Greg Kastli -- Go Navy!--I have to say it every time I see him as it has become a staple on his car. A restart situation enabled the 77 car of Jeff Aikey to make his move around Kastli and put his car out front. All eyes were on the 7B of Mark Burgtorf as he motored his way into third when an unfortunate incident caused him to be sent to the tail of the long line at a yellow flag. As we understand it, even though his car spun on the track after the yellow flag was thrown for another car, he was still said to be stopped on the track, and the IMCA official called it as such and he was sent to the back. We must say, as racing resumed we were intrigued by the show that Burgtorf then put on as he seemed to be racing under pure adrenaline, and made his way up to third. Meanwhile, Aikey continued his lead as another veteran driver had settled in behind him that being the 58 of Ray Guss, Jr. Even though 40 laps is a long race, this was a time when you wish there had been just a few more laps to see if Burgtorf could have pulled off the win. It wasn't to be though, and Aikey once again took a Deery Brothers win. We do not see a lot of Deery Brothers races, but we must be a good luck charm to Aikey, as it seems he is the winner nearly every time we are in attendance. Guss was scored in second, Burgtorf got a well deserved third place finish, fourth went to Jay Johnson and fifth to Terry Neal.

The show was run in an effecient manner which was appreciated by us and no doubt the majority of those there. This is especially nice when the show is run on a week night. Thanks to Toby Kruse and his staff for putting on a great program once again at the Marshalltown Speedway. It will be regular weekly racing this coming Friday night, May 21st. More information can be found at www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Happy Racing!

Larry Embrey Puts a Win in Yet Another Decade

It was a very pleasant night for fans to watch the great racing that took place at the Boone Speedway this past Saturday night. The track was fast and cars were running in tight bunches, giving the spectators some real thrills...and no doubt, the drivers too! There were 131 cars on hand including a couple of cars who traveled from out of state to get their racing fix. One, a modified driver would barely make it in time to tag the tail of the feature. He made the tow from Missouri after we suspect his regular track was rained out.

In the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature, two father/son duos finished in the top six. Travis Stensland paced the field early with Randy Bryan overtaking him at about lap four. Young Josh May soon made his way to the front of the field and would dog Bryan for the rest of the race. As the white flag flew, Bryan still had the advantage but the last corner coming to the checkers proved to be his nemesis as he went a little high, and Josh May slipped under him to take the win. Randy Bryan was the runner up, Mike Kennedy came home in third, Travis Stensland ran a good race to take home the fourth spot, fifth went to father of the winner, Jimmy May and sixth went to father of Travis Stensland (if we have heard correctly) Jeff Stensland.

The IMCA Northern SportMod feature had to be one of the best of that class that we have ever seen! As stated earlier, cars were running in packs, tight and fast. Making it even better, the race went flag to flag. Pole sitter, Lonnie Hodges led the first handful of laps, until Darren Huntley, the other front row sitter, took over. From there on out, there were five cars battling for positions 1-5. Huntley ran a good, consistant race and kept the top spot to the white flag as Cody Hennings, Lynn Brockett, Geoff Olson and Jeremy Embrey ran so closely behind him, it was hard to tell who had what position! That last lap saw Jeremy Embrey go from fourth spot, to make the pass to the front and take the exciting win. Scored in second was Cody Hennings, third would go to Darren Huntley, fourth to Lynn Brockett and fifth to Geoff Olson. Great racing guys!

The IMCA modifieds had 21 cars compete. Though only 20 cars ran the heats, a latecomer made it just in time to tag the tail of the feature. That driver was Jason Estes from Winston, Missouri. Only two laps were down in the main event, when a yellow flag flew when Russ Dickerson made contact with the frontstretch wall just out of turn four. That would be the only yellow to fly that we can recall. Tim Stevens, Cedar Rapids, appeared to have a win under his belt as he led comfortably over Bill Davis, Jr. through the halfway mark. Bad luck smacked Stevens about lap fourteen as he had to exit with a flat tire. That put Bill Davis, Jr. in the lead, with rookie to the division, Daniel Hilsabeck, chasing him. They would finish in that order at the checkers. Third went to Jimmy Gustin who, as usual, made his way through traffic from starting in 10th spot, fourth went to Jake Durbin who followed Gustin through the pack from back in 11th starting spot, and rounding out the top five, was Randy Havlik.

Fast and furious was the action in the IMCA stock car feature as well. The 22 of Wayne Gifford led early as Donavon Smith and Mike VanGenderen chased him. Gifford had to retire from the race later with a flat tire soon after Smith made it past him to take the top spot. It was an exciting race behind with VanGenderen, Trent Murphy, Jerry Gifford and Alan VanGorp dueling it out for position. It was a race that was so intense, you find yourself almost holding your breath to the end! Great show for the fans, gentlemen! Donavon Smith was able to hold on for the win though Mike VanGenderen gave it his all to get by him. VanGenderen had to be content in the runner up spot, Murphy took third, Jerry Gifford was fourth, and Alan VanGorp was fifth. VanGorp, who has jumped into the stock car class this year from running a hobby stock, is piloting the familiar looking car of John Hunnell, former successful driver from the area. VanGorp has transitioned very well into the stock car class in our observations.

Forty hobby stocks were broken into two A mains. The first feature found veteran driver Donnie Gustoff put his #20 car to the lead quickly. Michael Murphy would make the pass on Gustoff before many more circuits were completed, maintained it and came home to the checkered flags flying. Gustoff kept second place, third went to Chris Hupp, fourth to Aaron Rudolph, who looks to be now hanging on to a mere one point lead over Murphy, and fifth went to Austin Luellen.

Finishing up the night's action was the second A main for the hobby stocks. Larry Embrey led the twelve lap event from flag to flag to take another win in his long career. Add another decade to your winning list, Larry! Tyler Pickett chased Embrey the entire race to take second, third went to Ames, Iowa's Mark Hidlebaugh, fourth was Scott Lograsso, and fifth was Norfolk, Nebraska visiting driver, Jeremy Hoskinson.

We enjoyed visiting announcer for the evening, Bucky Doren from Cedar Falls, Iowa. Bucky is the tour director for the inaugural season of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA modifieds. The first race was a casualty to the weather this past Tuesday but has been rescheduled for this coming Wednesday at the Independence Motor Speedway. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. with racing to follow. We look forward to attending. Check out http://www.dirttour.com/ for more information and the schedule. Bucky also does a great job with live web casts which we often catch if we cannot attend the race. We know many, many people are thankful to catch his broadcasts of the Super Nationals, so be sure and check out http://www.racerpm.com/ as well. Thanks Bucky for your dedication to this great sport of dirt track racing we all enjoy!

Next Saturday night at the Boone Speedway will again be a regular points race for modifieds, sportmods, stock cars, hobby stocks and dwarf/mod lites. Check out http://www.raceboone.com/ for more information about the track. Happy racing!

O'Lear Wins at Marshalltown on Cliff Chambers Memorial Night

It was finally a pleasant night to be sitting at a racetrack this past Friday night. We can't recall a past season when we have had to wait this long to shed so many layers. It was deemed the annual Cliff Chambers Memorial Race night at the Marshalltown Speedway which always means much to drivers who recall the gentleman who once promoted the speedway.

A special added class for the night was the Nostalgic racecar class. The nine cars in attendance were reminiscent of those from the '50's and '60's. Some were replicas of drivers from the past, one of which we noted was the #8 of Darrell Dake. Dake was a very successful driver from the Cedar Rapids area who raced for many decades, from the 50's to the 90's. He tried his hand at Daytona a couple of times and made the Daytona 500 field. We recall watching him many times on the dirt tracks in the area, usually running the marathon 200-300 lappers, and often in a convertible. On this night, it was the #00 1957 Chevy driven by John Schroyer taking the win. Schroyer was happy and appreciative in victory lane to have won on the night of his friend Cliff Chambers' memorial.

The Dwarf/Mod Lites saw their feature go flag to flag as they completed it in quick fashion. Joel Huggins wasted no time in getting to the front from his second row starting postion and then never relinquished that lead. Point leader Mike Morrill, starting in 10th position with the invert status, skillfully made his way through the traffic to come home in second behind Huggins. Third went to Colby Oberembt, fourth to Randy Bryan and fifth to Eric Hendrickson.

The Northern SportMods had 26 cars in attendance, and did not require a B Main tonight. The race did not start off in good shape, as the 9X of Austin Lucas would roll off of turn two on the start of the race. He was thankfully okay and appeared to have very little damage, as he rejoined the field at the tail. Jayme Duinink led the pack early until Brett Moffitt passed him for the lead. When the checkers were flown, it was Moffitt with the win. Jake Strayer and Geoff Olson managed to pass Duinink as they took second and third respectively and Duinink had to settle for fourth. Fifth went to Barnes City's Eric Flander.

The IMCA stock cars had 19 cars with three unable to start the feature race. Dave Atcher led the charge from his pole position in the early going. A red flag situation occurred during this race when Donnie Boucher rolled his car off of turn four. When action resumed, it found Lake City's Dustin Smith up front with Atcher chasing him. Meanwhile, Newton's Michael Jaennette and Kellogg's Clay Deppe were challenging each other for third and fourth. Smith got his first win of the year at Marshalltown, Atcher came home in the runner up spot, Deppe squeaked by Jaennette to take third and Jaennette getting fourth. Rounding out the top five was previous point leader Trent Murphy. It appears Smith has now taken over that point lead.

Modified racing at Marshalltown is such fun to watch! With the track in much better condition than last week...thanks to the crew for getting it in shape...the drivers were ready for an exciting feature race. Richie Gustin wasted no time in taking the lead and appeared to be on his way to a fairly easy win. However, bad luck would rear it's ugly head as he had to leave the track while leading, victim of we suspect, a broken motor. This put the 2X of Mike O'Lear to the top spot with Jimmy Gustin in a relentless pursuit. O'Lear persisted with his lead to come home to the flying checkers and on this night, Gustin had to settle for that runner up spot. Todd Conrad kept his car toward the front all race long and came home in third. Fourth went to young Joel Bushore and fifth to the 19J of Jay Schmidt. O'Lear exclaimed in victory circle that he was at the point of "just hang on" when earlier he and Jimmy Gustin had to squeeze by a lap car on the back stretch, and thankfully, were able to do so. O'Lear also said he had dropped a cyclinder but was able to run the topside, keep his momentum and see his way to the win.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA hobby stocks. It was refreshing to see their main event go flag to flag also. Crowd favorite, Jennifer Hulin led the charge from starting on the pole but point leader Devin Smith quickly ended that as he made the pass for the lead. Smith stretched out that lead in convincing fashion to see yet another checkered flag. Grinnell's Todd Reitzler came home in second, third went to Michael Murphy, fourth to Eric Knutson and fifth went to Eric Larson.

It was every so much more pleasant to watch the racing action under better weather and track conditions this week. Also very nice to have the program completed by 9:55 p.m. as Toby Kruse and his crew ran an efficient show. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all of the drivers for entertaining us fans. All of your hard work, time and effort is truly appreciated by fans who love the sport.

Don't forget that the "Boys of Summer" the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Models are coming to the Marshalltown Speedway this coming Tuesday night, May 18th. Also on tap will be the IMCA Northern SportMods, the Dwarf/Mod Lites and the Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:15 with racing action to begin at 7 p.m. Then it will be back to a regular night of racing again on Friday, May 21st. Gustin and VanGenderen Take Close Wins

It was yet another cold night for racing at the Boone Speedway this past Saturday night. With the way the weather trend has been, the "heated" seats may be a staple through June! Kudos to the staff for trying to make the fans more comfortable while watching the racing action. Thankfully, the wind was much calmer than it had been the past couple of nights, which helped a bit also.

Twenty-one of the mighty little Dwarf/Mod Lite cars were on hand and all started the feature. Visiting driver from Yorkville, Illinois, Tom Schnabel, made the trip west to try his hand at taming the Boone track and made it pay off. Eric Hendrickson led the field for a few laps, but Schnabel, coming from the 10th starting position, quickly made his way toward the front and into the lead. Jimmy May and Schnabel would swap the top spot, but in the end, it would be Schnabel taking the checkers. Jimmy May came home in the runner-up place, third went to Eric Hendrickson, fourth to Mike Kennedy and fifth was Dusty Masolini.

Though car counts were down in the IMCA Northern SportMods from the huge count of 45 last week, it still took a B main to whittle their starting field to 24. Bill Wears from Des Moines was that winner. The racing action barely got started when a huge pile up happened in the middle of turns three and four. Twelve to fifteen cars were involved resulting in some having to retire to the pits, others tagging the field. Geoff Olson was able to make his way to the point position and maintained it for the win. Chasing him across the line was Matthew Meinecke, third went to Brett Moffit, fourth to Jeremy Embrey and fifth to Cody Hennings. If memory serves me right, I believe Embrey had to come from the rear of the pack after the huge wreck earlier.

Bill Davis, Jr. and Tim Stevens led the charge early in the IMCA modified feature, but Jammin' Jimmy Gustin had other ideas. Davis and Stevens had a comfortable lead when Gustin made his way to the third position. He would steadily reel the leaders in, pass Stevens for second and begin the quest for overtaking Davis. With one lap to go, it was still Davis in the lead, but Gustin nosed ahead to win, coming for the checkered flag. It was a spectacularly close finish, and one we have seen before by Gustin. Davis was, no doubt, a disappointed runner-up, Stevens was third, fourth went to Kelly Lyons and Adam Larson came home in fifth.

Not to be out done, the IMCA stock cars also had a very close finish at the line. Front row starters, Mike Munson and Marcus Fagan fought it out in the early going until Mike VanGenderen, coming from starting ninth, threw his hat into the ring. VanGenderen would then get into that first spot but would soon have the 22 of Wayne Gifford hot on his tail. Meanwhile, point leader Donavon Smith was mounting the charge to the front and running third. VanGenderen took the white flag in first and was able to hold off Gifford out of turn four to take his first win at the track this year. Gifford had to settle for runner up, third went to Donavon Smith, fourth to Ty Hill and fifth to 14th place starter, Brian Irvine. Irvine made the trip over to Boone, after his regular track at Independence had cancelled for the night.

The final feature was the IMCA hobby stocks. Thirty-five cars competing for the night, saw one B Main qualify the final four cars in the 24 car starting A Main. By lap two, Michael Murphy had made his way to the top spot from starting ninth and would hold it to the finish. Cody Gustoff followed him in second all the way to the final checkers of the night, third went to Scott Lograsso, fourth to Chris Hupp and rounding out the top five was Pat Mather.

The racing action was completed at 10:08 p.m. allowing fans and drivers alike to make their way to warmer places. This Iowa weather has not been kind to racing this early Spring season, but let's hope for warmer and dry conditions at the Boone Speedway next week. Racing action continues on May 15 with a regular point event. Be sure and check http://www.raceboone.com/ for complete information concerning the speedway.

Cold Night in May at Marshalltown Speedway

We have learned from past experience that we need to carry winter coats, extra layers, and blankets with us all during racing season...even in the summer. We were certainly glad we had it all with us last night at the Marshalltown Speedway. We endured what had to be one of the coldest nights of racing in the month of May, that we have ever seen! There was a strong west/northwest wind blowing toward the grandstands and that would just add to the uncomfortable situation. Mother Nature just has not been kind this year.

There was a lot of racing on tap as two make-up features would start the night's action about 15 minutes early. First was the A modified feature from the April 30th rain out. The feature picked up where it had ended with just a couple of laps completed before it had to be halted. Nineteen cars competed from the 24 that had started the feature last week. Missing the call were Denny Rosenberg, Scott Simotavich, Rod Clement, Josh Gilman, and Kyle Krampe. Young Joel Bushore was on the point as action began but it was Luke Wanninger who quickly took over. The Gustin boys, Richie and Jimmy, tried their hardest to catch the two top runners, but to no avail. As the first night's checkers flew, it was Luke Wanninger taking his first ever A modified win, Bushore held on for second, Richie Gustin was third and Jimmy Gustin was fourth. Mike O'Lear rounded out the top five spots.

The make-up hobby stock feature rounded out the program from last week. Coming from deep in the pack to take the win, was Lake City's Devin Smith. Smith was chased across the line by Michael Murphy who also started well back in the pack. This was not too surprising for the likes of those two talented drivers. Third place was captured by Matt Hudspeth, fourth went to Newton's Josh Saunders who had an excellent run and fifth to Michael Vibbard.

After the heats were completed, the regular night's features took to the track. With such nasty weather conditions, it was decided not to do winner interviews or pictures after feature races, but instead keep the show rolling along as quickly as possible. First feature was the Dwarf/Mod Lites. Outside front row sitter, Randy Bryan, took the lead but couldn't hold off a hard charging Mike Morrill. Josh May tried to make a challenge on the leader but would have to settle for second when the checkers flew. Morrill took the win followed by May, third was Eric Hendrickson, Randy Bryan held on for fourth, and fifth was Tim Hennigar who had started well in the back.

The IMCA Northern SportMods saw several yellows flying during their main event. When all was said and done, the 13 car of Brett Moffitt would cross the line in the first position. However, he was disqualified for what we understood was an illegal carburetor. This would hand the victory over to last week's winner, 14 year old Cayden Carter from Oskaloosa. Carter had challenged during the race but could not catch Moffitt. His steady driving was rewarded though, as he was declared the winner. Newton's Jake Strayer also drove an excellent race, and was runner-up, third went to Geoff Olson, fourth to Scott Davis and fifth was Eric Flander in the #12 car.

The stock cars saw two veteran drivers, Tommy Thompson and Rick Brown trying for that top spot early. This race too, saw many yellow flags flying. The track was rough and broken up which was playing havoc with the cars trying to maintain their lines. As racing got back underway after several restarts, Travis Shipman from Mason City, put his #87 car to the lead as Thompson, Brown, Clay Deppe, Steve Meyer and Michael Jaennette battled it out behind him. Both Brown and Deppe would have to exit the track with problems around halfway through the contest. As the laps wound down, it was two familiar cars getting through traffic and moving toward the front. Travis Shipman took the win, but Michael Murphy, coming from near the back of the starting field, chased him across the line for second. Third went to Michael Jaennette, fourth to "birthday boy" Tommy Thompson, and fifth to Dustin Smith who had to restart at the back of the field after having repairs made in the pits from an on track incident.

Two Canada drivers were on hand for modified racing last evening. One of them, the #01 of Joey Galloway, Ft. Francis, Ontario, had his night end in terrible fashion as he made a spectacular roll down the front stretch before the race even had one lap in. Veteran Vern Jackson, was no doubt wondering if the car was going to come down on top of him, but luckily he avoided that disaster. The other Canadian car was the #71 of Derrick Big Eagle from Manor, Saskatchewan, who was not able to start the feature. Jammin' Jimmy Gustin skillfully put his #19 into the top spot as racing finally got more than just a couple of laps under the green flag.
Luke Wanninger made his way to the second spot and thinking to make it a clean sweep for the night after having taken the make up feature. He was unable to catch the #19 though and Gustin came home the winner and Wanninger took second. Third was David Brown, with by far his best race of the season, fourth went to Todd Conrad, and rounding out the top five, was Ronn Lauritzen.

The final feature was the hobby stock class. Two young drivers, would finish 1-2. Tyler Pickett led the entire race from his pole starting position and Newton's Calvin Dhondt finished in second.
Third went to Todd Reitzler, fourth to Michael Vibbard, and fifth to Michael Murphy who once again came from the back of the pack for a good finish.

The track was not kind to many drivers tonight, and mostly thanks to the way Mother Nature has been treating us here in Iowa. Us fans had to battle weather tonight that was more likened to an early March race too. Let's all hope for much nicer weather next Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway when it will be the annual Cliff Chamber's Memorial as regular season points racing continues. More information and complete results can be found at www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Happy racing!

May Day Brings Large Car Count for Boone

This past Saturday night, May 1st, Boone Speedway saw 154 cars check into the pits. With most tracks having rain outs on Friday night, it appeared that the drivers from other areas were anxious to get in some weekend racing.

The first feature to hit the track after the usual farming session, was the Dwarf/Mod Lites. There were 21 cars on hand, their best car count of the season. Third place starter, Colby Oberembt, jumped to the lead. I believe this is just his second year of racing and this young driver has certainly shown a marked improvement. Cory Dennis would chase him the entire race, but was unable to catch him. Oberembt came home to the checkers flying, for his first ever feature win. As Dennis took the runner up spot, it was Eric Hendrickson following him across the line for third. Fourth went to Mike Kennedy and fifth to Joel Huggins.

The largest car count of the year with 45 cars, the IMCA Northern SportMods had to have their starting field cut to 24 cars by running two B mains. Clint Luellen was the winner of the first consy race, and Lynn Brockett took the second B main. Andy Tiernan led the first few laps until Jeremy Embrey made the pass into first place. Embrey pulled away but during the last few circuits, Tiernan was slowly reeling him in, but to no avail. Embrey took the feature win with Tiernan in second place. Brian Miller came home in third, fourth went to Matthew Mienecke and fifth was Eric Elliott.

A nice field of 24 IMCA modifieds put on a good show for the fans. Twenty-three cars started the feature with Billy Davis missing the call. Jon Snyder had the field covered from the get go, running a smooth and consistent line the entire race. Even with several yellow flags resulting in restarts, Snyder would power away from the field. Jockeying for positions behind him, several cars would swap places during the course of the event, including Kyle Krampe, Craig Carlson and Fred Schimmels. Snyder took the win easily over Krampe and in the last few laps after a restart, former Super Nationals winner, Todd Shute made a great surge to come home in third place. Fourth went to the #18 of Jake Durbin, and fifth was Craig Carlson.

The IMCA stock cars began their feature with 24 cars on the track. Two cars were unable to make the starting call. Kellogg, Iowa's Clayton Deppe led the field during the early laps until veteran Steve Jackson made the pass into first after a restart situation. Eighth place starter, "Hot" Rod Richards, winner of the season opener, made his way into the runner-up spot at ten laps down in the 18 lap event. Quite the contest would ensue as the laps wound down, when Jackson, Richards, Andy Bryant and 10th place starter, Donovan Smith all were racing hard and tight for position. Smith made the pass around Jackson on the white flag lap and came home for his second win of the season at the Boone Speedway. Jackson had to settle for second, third went to Rod Richards, fourth to Andy Bryant and fifth to Trent Murphy. This class always seems to provide the fans with an exiting race as it did again tonight.

Thirty-eight IMCA hobby stocks were split into two feature events. Feature one saw Richard Yaw lead the race early and then have his night come to an end when he lost an axle. Cody Gustoff put himself in the point position then and would lead the rest of the way to take the checkered flag. Following Gustoff across the line was Brandon Pruitt, Michael Murphy, longtime racer Randy Embrey, and Dean Hartwig. Gustoff was a repeat winner from last Saturday's show.

Hobby stock feature number two, which closed out the program's events, had Travis Fenton lead the early laps. It wasn't long until the m15 of Pat Mather took the lead as he sailed home to the feature win. Ninth place starter Aaron Rudolph came home the runner up in the contest, followed by Matt Hudspeth, Donnie Gustoff and Travis Fenton.

It was after 11:30 when the program was completed. Next Saturday night at the Boone Speedway will be another regular weekly point's night. Heat racing is scheduled to begin at 7:30. If it is a lot of racing action you are looking for, Boone Speedway is the place to be. Be sure and check www.raceboone.com for more details. Happy racing!

Rain Shortens Program at Marshalltown

Friday brought rain once again and it was not looking good for racing in the area. However, promoter Toby Kruse was not about to give in to Mother Nature this week. The afternoon brought clearing skies and the show went on. The track was heavy and fast but none too kind on a few motors. With perfect blue skies to the west, who would have thought the night's program would be cut short by a small rain cell that found the Marshalltown Speedway!

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature saw all thirteen cars start the feature, including the #99 of Josh May. May had rolled his car off of turn one in the heat race when it appeared a tire dug into the soft track. Joel Huggins leaped to the lead early, soon to be chased by Mike Morrill and Tim Hennigar. Huggins slid a little high on the backstretch which allowed Hennigar to slip around him. When the final checkers flew, Tim Hennigar would take the win. Mike Morrill also made the pass on Huggins, to take the runner-up position. Huggins had to settle for third, fourth went to Josh May who made his way up from the tail of the starting line-up, and fifth went to his dad, Jimmy May.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had 38 cars in attendance. Two B Mains were needed to cut the starting field to 24 cars. Chad Louk won the first B and Fred Leytham, making his first appearance of the season, took B Main number two. A couple of incidents in the main event, would take out more than a few cars. Young Cayden Carter, just 14 years old from Oskaloosa, put his car out front and pulled away from the pack on a couple of restarts. He had just missed getting a win at the track earlier this year, but on this night, the win was his. Point leader Eric Elliott came home in second, another young driver, Jake Strayer was third, fourth went to Scott Davis, and fifth to Shawn Hunter, the early race leader.

"The Class too Tough to Tame", the IMCA stock cars, was up next. Clay Deppe led the pack early but with what appeared to be a car not wanting to turn, he would fall back a few positions. Michael Jaennette put his car to the point position then and led several circuits until a hard charging Michael Murphy was able to grab the top spot. Following Murphy through the pack, was Dustin Smith who put himself in the second position. The last couple of laps was a contest between Murphy and Smith, with Murphy being able to hold on for the win. Jaennette came home with a good run to take third, fourth went to Clay Deppe and fifth went to the Chelsea Charger, Damon Murty.

No one was quite prepared to discover raindrops beginning to fall just as the modified feature began. No more than a couple of laps were in the books, when the rain started falling heavier. Grabbing gear, seats and blankets, everyone quickly exited the grandstand as the rain came down even harder. This was quite unexpected, as the sun was shining and the sky was blue when racing began.

Next Friday, racing will begin fifteen minutes early at 7:15, with the modified feature. The make-up hobby stock feature will also be run before the regular night's action begins. Make plans to come and see some good racing at the Marshalltown Speedway. Happy racing!
