J. J. Scott wins Boone modified feature
A hot and muggy night awaited fans and drivers for racing on Saturday night. Racing action saw two drivers get their first wins of the season while other classes saw familiar faces back in the winner's circle. What has become a constant lately, Mother Nature provided us with a looming bank of clouds to the west and north and later a light show. Heavy rains fell Saturday morning--in the 3 inch or more range, but racing went on for the fourteenth straight night at the Boone Speedway. Announcer Johnny Tharp thanked the speedway crew for draining 40,000 gallon of water from the infield during a tireless all-day effort.
Ed Zehm would take his second straight feature win in the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature. He would swing around the outside of Charlie Brown on the white flag lap, after Brown had led all of the previous laps. Brown would take the runner-up spot, third was Randy Bryan who came from starting 12th, fourth was Colby Oberembt, and fifth went to Josh May.
The IMCA SportMod feature found a new face in Victory Lane as Cory Rose put his black #86 in first place. Rose made his first appearance of the year last week, and if memory serves us correctly, may be his first racing at the track in a couple of years. Runner-up spot and third place went to a couple of veteran drivers when Rick Rinngenberg chased Rose to a second place finish and Darren Huntley followed him to score third place. Placing fourth was Jared Timmerman and fifth went to Scott Davis.
The IMCA modified feature saw all 21 cars start their feature. Dallas Center driver J. J. Scott won his first feature event at the Boone Speedway as he led all twenty laps. Todd Shute ran the topside in an effort to catch Scott but had to settle for the bridesmaid position when the checkers flew. Rookie to the division, Daniel Hilsabeck was third, fourth went to seasoned veteran Kelly Lyons, and rounding out the top five was Luke Wanninger.
The stock car feature saw Wayne Gifford score his second feature of the year at the track as he bested Donovan Smith for the win. No doubt, it was a disappointed Jay Schmidt taking third place after having crossed the finish line in first place. It was announced that Schmidt jumped a restart and was docked two positions. Without a caution flag after that, he had no opportunity to be realigned, thus having to take the two position penalty. Fourth went to Trent Murphy and fifth to Kevin Shaw.
Final feature of the evening was the running of only one hobby stock feature after a B Main rounded out the starting 24-car field. Scott Lograsso scored another win for the year. He won comfortably over runner-up Michael Murphy who was also well ahead of third place finisher, Michael Peterson out of Montezuma, Iowa. Fourth would go to the 3A of Austin Luellen, and fifth was the 911 car of Darin Rothfus.
Next Saturday night will be another regular point race starting at 7:30. Don't forget the 4th of July spectacular the following night when Boone hosts the 4th annual Eve of Destruction along with a huge fireworks display sponsored by the city of Boone. The IMCA SportMods will also be racing in a non-points event. Be sure and check http://www.raceboone.com/ for complete official results and more information concerning the track. Let's hope the weather is out of this rainy period, and we have dry weather to enjoy many of the mid-week specials coming up. Happy racing!

Marshalltown Dodges the Rain
After a rain out last Friday at Marshalltown, sunshine, blue skies and a nice southerly breeze greeted the fans this week. Who would have thought that before the night had ended, we would again be watching approaching thunderstorms! All features were completed and an extra added attraction of a "Spectator Elimination" contest closed out the action at the track.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was the first to pull onto the track. A red flag would fly before even the first lap was completed when the 46 of Kevin Grisham rolled on the backstretch. I believe this was the second time he has put it on the top at Marshalltown this season. He was okay. When racing resumed, Joel Huggins put his bright yellow x50 to the front of the pack with Jimmy May tailing him. Meanwhile, Tim Hennigar, Josh May and Mike Morrill were making headway; all from starting well back in the field. With thirteen laps down, Josh May made the pass into the top spot and went home to another win. Joel Huggins settled for the bridesmaid's spot, Tim Hennigar took third, fourth went to Mike Morrill and fifth was Jimmy May.
The IMCA Northern SportMods had to run a B to fill out their 24-car starting line-up. Tom Rawlins was leading with six laps down, when he was suddenly off power and out of the race. This would then put the second-place car of Fred Leytham to the point position and son Gaitlin Leytham, to the runner-up position. Several caution flags would fly, but those two would hold on to their positions until the checkers. Father Fred Leytham would take his first win of the season at Marshalltown, and Gaitlin would follow in second. Third went to the 21 of Kyle Brown who had started well back in the starting line-up as he held off Carter VandenBerg who was scored in fourth. Rounding out the top five, was the 2Z of Zach Rawlins.
The stock car feature was quickly brought to the track as the storm front to the north was approaching rapidly. Jeff Wollam led the troops through halfway of the 18-lap feature. Yellow flags would bunch the field and on a restart, point leader Dustin Smith (who had started in 12th spot) shot around Wollam on the backstretch. Not to be outdone, Trent Murphy, second in points, followed Smith through the pack and would take over second as he also got around Wollam. On a subsequent restart after yet another caution, Smith would pull high in turns three and four, with what we believe was a flat tire. With only two laps left, that would end his chances of a win even though he would rejoin the pack as the race restarted. The green-white-checkered finish saw Trent Murphy with the win which appears to have put him into the point lead, second went to Jeff Wollam, third to veteran Tommy Thompson, fourth to Tracy Gienger and fifth to Dave Atcher.
All nineteen IMCA modifieds took the green flag for their feature event. Scott Simatovich led the pack up front for a short time until the 12X of Brett Ladehoff made the pass into the lead after a restart. The lead was short lived however, when Ladehoff experienced problems and went into the infield. Richie Gustin had been coming through the pack and had made it into the second position as he ran high on the track, while Simatovich clung to the bottom groove. With just two laps to go, Gustin seemed to be loosing power and would fall back drastically. When the double checkers flew, Scott Simatovich would take his second win of the year at the Marshalltown Speedway as he had also won the track's opening night feature. Josh "Happy" Gilman kept his car toward the front most of the race, and came home in second. Jon Snyder was scored in third, fourth went to Mike O'Lear and rounding out the top five, was Adam Larson.
By the time the last feature, the IMCA hobby stock class, pulled onto the track, we were now watching a light show to our north. This was not a good night for leaders of the race, as Devin Smith in his 81 machine had come quickly to the front from starting 10th, only to drop out with a flat. This occurred after a restart when a situation on the front chute involving several cars stopped the action. Todd Reitzler now took over the point position, which he kept for the final laps. Reitzler was the winner followed by Tyler Pickett, a front runner all night, third went to Eric Knutson, fourth to Gary Pfantz and fifth to Newton's Josh Saunders.
Since the weather was still not causing a problem, a special event -- a "Spectator Elimination" went on as planned. Twenty-two entrance brought their licensed and driven-to-the-track vehicles to go up against an opponent. They would run a green-white-checkered from a standing start --with the winner advancing to the next round. Unfortunately, one entrant ended up on the roll-back after rolling in turn two! The winner of this unusual event, was Dwarf/Mod Lite driver, Ivan Guerra, as he was the last man standing. His opponent was a sharp looking newer Camero, but Guerra's little VW Turbo charged ride, was the winner on the night. This proved to be a popular attraction and promoter Toby Kruse already announced that they would be doing it all over again on July 23rd.
Shortly after the action was all completed, the winds shifted and the approaching storm seemed to be getting a bit too close for comfort. We headed the vehicle south and avoided any rain but had only been home a short time, when it began. Check out http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/ for the complete results and all other information. Mark your calendars for this coming Monday, as the Great American Stock Car Shoot Out is on tap. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:15 with races at 7 p.m. Happy racing!

Tony Kanaan Puts Bad Luck Behind as he Wins at the Iowa Speedway
Sunday's Iowa Corn 250 IndyCar race at the Iowa Speedway turned out to be one of the best experience we have had at the Newton track. The forecast for rain that had been there all week long, did not even develop. The cloud cover gave great relief to what could have been a very hot day, and the slight breeze made it very comfortable. Maybe it was just us, but everyone in our party agreed it was the easiest and most convenient flow of traffic getting into the grounds and parked, that any of us had encountered. When things start on a good note, that's is always good.
Our group of regular attendees did our usual pre-race tailgating with the American and Hawkeye flags proudly flying above.
Even the flow into the grandstand area seemed to go much better than usual and staff was all very pleasant as we made our way into our seats toward turn one. Then came the rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, and the jet fly-by--which always puts an extra beat in your heart--and it was time for racing. We noted that racing began 15 minutes earlier than scheduled due to impending weather--another unusual incident at a race, but one that we all thought to be a wise decision.
At the drop of the green flag, all 25 cars roared into turn one, only to be brought under caution before one lap was completed. Justin Wilson and Mario Moraes made contact coming out of turn four, bringing the race to a halt and both of their day done before it even began.
There was good dueling all day at the front of the pack. Early on it was two-times winner, Dario Franchitti fighting to stay ahead of Scott Dixon and "Turn-Two-Tony" Kanaan riding in third. Kanaan has crashed in turn two in previous races, thus giving him I am sure, an ominous feeling going into that corner. Dixon made the pass on Franchitti about lap 115 and then Kanaan slipped into second place.
As the race wore on, Franchetti and Kanaan paced the field much of the day. Brazilian, Helio Castroneves threw his hat into the ring, after getting out of the pits in good time, and took over the lead at lap 195 as he passed Franchetti. Bad luck would then bite Franchetti as he was off power and into the pits for a lengthy repair. This put Kanaan into the runner up spot as he dogged Castroneves. It was an exciting race between those two, until with just ten laps to go, Kanaan hit the turbo button, (yes, there really is a turbo button that the drivers are allowed to use a designated number of times during the race) and passed into the lead, never to look back. This was Kanaan's first win since 2008 and a very satisfying one no doubt as he beat his turn two jinx at the Iowa Speedway. Third place went to #8 E. J. Viso, fourth to #6 Ryan Briscoe, and rounding out the top five was pole-sitter Will Power in his #12 machine.
The race was completed in right at 1 hour and 42 minutes allowing the crowd an early exit for making their way home for a Monday morning work call. Even the exiting of the track seemed to go smoother than normal which was a nice ending to our day. It was announced later that there was approximately 5,000 sold seats that did not show for the event, and our thought is that the weather forecast had much to do about a good number of the no-shows.
If you've not attended the Iowa Speedway, you should put that on your "to do" list. It is a great facility to have right here in the Hawkeye state. You can find full results and information on the speedway and their upcoming events at www.iowaspeedway.com. Happy racing!

Boone Speedway Beats the Storms
While heading toward Boone Speedway on Saturday afternoon, we were watching the sky and checking radar. A big "blob" of green, yellow and red in southwest Iowa looked to be blowing up and moving to the northeast. Not a good sign. However, Mother Nature was once again kind to Boone! A few sprinkles caused a few minutes delay right before the running of the feature event for the Dwarf/Mod Lites. We saw a good light show all around, but nothing close enough to cause a problem. That makes thirteen straight weeks of racing, including the Frostbuster, at the Boone Speedway! Pretty unbelievable considering the weather we have had in Iowa.
The Dwarf/Mod Lites feature had just pulled onto the track when they were ushered off when a few sprinkles began to fall. The familiar tractors used for "farming" the track made quick work of getting the track back to racing condition with just a very short delay. Mike Morrill put his red #6 to the lead quickly and was looking good. A caution with eleven laps down, bunched the field and put last week's winner, Ed Zehm, on Morrill's tail. Those two dueled it out for several laps and at fourteen down, crossed the finish line in a virtual dead heat. But it was lap fifteen that really counted and Ed Zehm made it to the line first. That gave Zehm the repeat win and Morrill was a very close second. Third went to Matthew Goodin who came from starting eighth, fourth was Josh May who started twelfth, and fifth was Joel Huggins in his bright yellow ride.
The IMCA Northern SportMods filled out the 24-car starting field by running a B-Main. Ty Luellen took advantage of his outside front row starting spot and led the pack for nearly all of the laps. However, that proved to be not quite enough. Luellen still led when the white flag flew. Brian Miller had made his way from eighth, into the runner up spot and continued his quest to catch the leader. Looking at the checkers starting to unfurl ahead, Miller nosed ahead by a bumper, to take the win over Ty Luellen. Third was Clint Luellen, fourth went to Lynn Brockett, and fifth to Jeremy Embrey who started back in fifteenth place.
Next up was the IMCA modified A main. Luke Wanninger led from the pole position until lap 15 when Richie Gustin made the pass in turn one to take over the lead. Gustin took the win over Wanninger and Jon Snyder, Cale Sponsler, and Adam Larson finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th in that order. That was Gustin's third feature win at the track this year and a repeat win from last week.
Twenty-three stock cars took to the track for their main event with Robert Stofer sitting on the pole. This race proved to be all his as he led the entire contest. Stofer had just made his return appearance two weeks prior. He had undergone open heart surgery early this Spring, so this was surely a very satisfying win for the veteran driver. Mike Munson trailed Stofer for second, third went to point leader Donavon Smith, fourth was Gary Bass and fifth went to Wayne Gifford who had started the feature at the very tail.
There were thirty-nine hobby stocks checked in for the evening, making for two A mains. Hobby feature number one saw Cory Tasler lead the first few laps until Aaron Rudolph took over. Rudolph kept his #38R out front to see the checkers first. Veteran Randy Embrey came from starting eleventh to take the runner up position. Tasler hung on to third, fourth was Donnie Gustoff and fifth was Dean Hartwig. Gustoff then had his motor claimed by Jacob Thompson.
The hobby stock main number two would then conclude the night's racing, while the lightning to the north provided the grandstand with a light show. Michael Murphy came from starting tenth, to take the lead by lap five as he powered by Brandon Brinton. Murphy went on to an easy win over Brinton. Third went to Ames driver, Mark Hidlebaugh, fourth to point leader Pat Mather, and fifth to Cody Gustoff.
It was one of those nights when you kept wondering just when the rain would come, but once again, Boone Speedway had the luck on it's side. Next Saturday night will be another weekly point event along with bike races that were postponed from this week due to the weather conditions. Why not make plans to come and see some great racing action at the home of the IMCA Supernationals? VerBeek, Wood, Gibson and Allen Grab Wins at the Monster Half-Mile
Southern Iowa got pounded again last week with rain and with what we understood was 8-8 1/2 inches of rain since last Saturday, according to announcer Tony Paris. That alone made it pretty amazing that the Southern Iowa Speedway was able to run. But run they did, and they were watering the track when we arrived, and continued to. When racing started, there was dust kicking up around the track, with a swamp low in the corners.
The USRA stock cars ran their feature first with seven competitors on hand. Visiting driver Damon Murty from Chelsea, led the first couple of laps until Nathan Wood took to the outside and made the pass for the lead. The remainder of the 15-lap feature was all Wood's as he drove home to another win. Behind him, Murty and Shane Weller had been dueling it out for second and third. Weller made the pass on Murty about lap 11 to secure second, Murty had to settle for third, fourth went to Mike VanGenderen, and fifth to Rich Vogt. Completing the field was Kyle Harwood in sixth and seventh went to a name from the past, the 98S of Brian Sterling. In the after win interview, Wood exclaimed that even with the extra 50 pounds of weight he had added after the heat race, the car was still loose.
The USRA modified feature had seven of the eight cars start the feature. Bad luck plagued the 47 of Josh Truman who dumped fluid on the track during hot laps, was not able to repair the car, and left the track early. Ron VerBeek took his first feature win at Osky this year after finally putting some distance between himself and a challenging Scott Dickey. Dickey had taken the number one spot temporarily for a lap or two but VerBeek motored past him then for good.
Dickey was the runner-up, third went to Steven Blattler, fourth to Brandon Banks, fifth to Greg Cox, sixth to John Fellman, and David Ott was scored in seventh, but was not able to finish the race.
The USRA hobby stockers had a nice field of 24 cars check into the pits, with only one car unable to make the feature. The pink #20 ride of Andrew Husted out of Rutledge, MO paced the field for the first couple of laps until Dale Porter took over the lead. It was looking like Porter was headed for victory lane until having to exit with mechanical problems with just a couple of laps to go. The 3S of Steve Allen then inherited the lead as he had been chasing Porter for most of the race. At the same time that Porter had to leave the race when the yellow flew, the third place runner of Donovan Nunnikhoven also exited into the pits, shaking up the field. Allen kept his cool, running the last couple of remaining laps and saw the checkers flying for the very first time in his six year racing career. With Steve Allen taking the win, it was Danny Thrasher making his way into the runner-up spot, third went to Matt Messamaker, fourth to Todd Reitzler, and fifth to Derek Kirkland.
To finish the night's events off, the B-Mods had 19 of the 20 drivers start their A Main. Bill Gibson took the lead quickly after a complete restart was needed at the drop of the first green. Gibson kept that front place throughout the entire race to take his first win at the Osky "Monster Half-Mile" this season. Tyler Groenendyk was able to pass visiting driver Ken Kositzky, from Cedar Rapids, (and I believe he races at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton) for second and third places respectively. Fourth place was awarded to Cayden Carter and fifth to Mike Shelton.
Racing was completed by 9:50 allowing fans to get home at a decent hour. Next Wednesday night is another regular night of racing with hot laps scheduled for 7:15 and races at 7:30. Richie Gustin Wins at Boone!
Saturday brought a lot of rain around the state of Iowa and along with it, many tracks canceling their programs for the night. Thanks to great drainage, track prep and just the over all luck of Boone, the show went on as usual. It also brought two "firsts" as for the very first time, two SportMod mains were run and in the modified class, "raceivers" were used to help with realigning and relaying information to the drivers. According to announcer Johnny Tharp, next year ALL classes will be using the devices. A large crowd was on hand for Little League night with those wearing their team uniform, getting in free. There was also a batting contest held in the infield. A number of traveling drivers made their way to the Boone Speedway as well, packing the pits with 155 cars.
Twenty of the Dwarf/Mod Lites were signed in and all of them started their A Main. Ed Zehm took advantage of his pole starting position and jumped out to the lead, never to look back as he took the win. Colby Oberembt in his OB car, took a ride when he rolled in between turns three and four, with seven laps down. He was okay. When racing resumed, Zehm took off again, pulling away from the field. Following Zehm at the finish line for second was Josh May who had started back in ninth place, third went to Randy Bryan, fourth to David Schmalzried, and fifth to Joel Huggins.
With 40 of the IMCA Northern SportMods competing, the decision was made to skip a B Main and let all cars run in one of two A Mains. This was a first for the speedway. In the first feature, Cody Warrick put his #1C ride out front early and maintained a comfortable lead for most of the circuits until Oskaloosa hot shoe Cayden Carter closed in. Warrick continued hitting his mark each time though, and didn't allow Carter much of chance to overcome him. Warrick picked up the win with Carter in second. Third went to Austin Lucas who made his way there from starting tenth, fourth was Matthew Meinecke who had started along side Lucas, and fifth finisher was Bruce Egeland. Egeland is a regular competitor each week, making the trip down from Marshall, Minnesota.
The second A Main for the SportMod division found Stacey Clark leading the pack of hungry drivers through lap six. Jeremy Embrey would then take over the lead, Clark slipping back a position or two as Eric Elliott and Brian Miller advanced. Embrey and Elliott dueled a couple of laps until Elliott made the pass at the flagstand with thirteen laps down. Elliott put some distance between himself and Embrey as he drove on to the win. Following Embrey for third was Brian Miller, Stacey Clark took fourth and rounding out the top five was Nick Roberts.
It was now time for the IMCA modifieds to run their 20-lap feature with all 23 cars on hand starting the contest. From the outside pole, Richie Gustin shot to the lead, looking strong. Billy Davis, Jr., jumped to the topside of the track and began his quest to reel in the 19G, putting himself in the second position. Those two would finish in that order with Gustin taking the checkers first, and Davis in second. Third went to Tim Stevens and fourth went to Jimmy Gustin in a remarkable run from having to tag the field after changing a tire under yellow. As Richie Gustin pulled away in the closing laps, brother Jimmy was the car to be watching as he picked off cars rapidly. It would have been interesting to have the race go a few more laps as Jimmy was a rocket, but finishing fourth was still quite the accomplishment. Trailing Gustin to take fifth, was the 15X of Scott Baker.
The IMCA stock cars had a nice field of 27 cars with only one car unable to start the feature. Pole sitter, Jeff Wollam from Marshalltown led the field easily, putting some distance between himself and the rest of the pack until a caution bunched the field. On the restart it was second place car of Rod Richards on Wollam's bumper. Richards soon made the pass for the lead and with laps winding down, he would keep the lead to take his second win of the year at Boone. Wollam had to settle for second place, third went to Damon Murty who charged up through the field from starting twelfth, fourth was Cory Bushnell and fifth went to Bryan Trogdon, winner of the past two features. When the race was completed, there were several cars sitting in the tech area with what appeared to be some selective teching going on.
It was a night of double/double features with two mains being run in the hobby stock class as well as the SportMods. Every one of the 45 cars on hand would start a feature...an accomplishment in itself. Feature number one found the #10 of Travis Fenton grabbing the feature win even with lap traffic making for an interesting finish coming out of turn four. The car losing out was the 63 of Cory Tasler. Tasler had been running second until closing in on the lap car left him sitting in turn four as the checkers flew. Pat Mather was able to avoid the last second drama in turn four, to go from third to second at the flag. Third went to Mark Hidlebaugh, fourth to Donnie Gustoff and fifth to Michael Murphy.
Hobby feature number two completed the night's racing as veteran Randy Embrey came home in first place. He had run down the leader Brad Ratcliff who kept the runner-up spot at the finish. Third was Tyler Pickett, fourth was Scott Lograsso and fifth was Jesse Hopkins.
The track stayed good and racy all night long as the track "groomers" did their job expertly as they always do. Next Saturday will be mid-season championship night at the Boone Speedway. For more information be sure and check out http://www.raceboone.com/. More complete results are listed below. Happy racing!

Carter Captures Third SportMod Feature at Marshalltown
A hot and muggy night awaited us at the Marshalltown Speedway this past Friday night. It would keep the track much heavier than we had seen the past couple of weeks. A few sprinkles brought out the umbrellas before the program started, but it was short lived. It was a pleasant surprise to see a new scoreboard standing in turn one. There are a few bugs to be worked out and only the laps were working last night. There was a nice crowd on hand to watch the night's action as it was started off with a "Faster Pastor" race as local clergy raced around the high-banked quarter-mile. Jeff Wollam loaned his IMCA stock car to Darren Mitchell, who won the title of fastest pastor.
Regular features began with the Dwarf/Mod Lites. Seventeen cars started the main event and the OB of Colby Oberembt took the lead and was looking for another visit to Victory Lane. Mike Morrill had not seen the checkers first this year and set his sights on seeing just that. He made his way steadily from starting 9th, up into the second position as he chased Oberembt. The OB still led at the white flag and going down the backstretch, but a lap car was going to make it interesting as they drove into corner three. That scenario would prove to be the demise of Oberembt's quest for the checkers, as veteran Morrill drove to the bottom, the lap car in the middle, and Oberembt having to take the outside. The last corner pass by Morrill saw him take his first win of the year at Marshalltown and Oberembt coming home, no doubt, a disappointed runner up. Third would go to Tim Hennigar who chased the top two the last few laps, fourth went to Eric Hendrickson and fifth to Josh May.
In the IMCA Northern SportMods, it was Caden Carter back in the winner's circle for the third time this year. He fought past Zach Rawlins with two laps to go, to get the win. Rawlins had a great run to take the runner up spot, third went to last week's winner Gatlin Leytham, fourth went to visitor Doug Smith in the 12X and fifth to point leader Eric Flander.
There was a nice field of 20 stock cars on hand and all took to the track to begin their feature. Tracy Gienger led all 18-laps to get his first win of the season. Point leader Dustin Smith would extend his lead in taking second place. Third went to Trent Murphy, fourth to "The Chelsea Charger" Damon Murty and fifth to "The Flyin' Farmer" Rick Brown. The race went green to checkerd.
We knew we would be in for an exciting modified feature as a couple of "non-regular" hot shoes were on hand. Point average put the #5 of former Super National's champion Todd Shute on the outside front row along side Marshalltown's Brett Ladehoff. Shute took the lead immediately with Ladehoff and Josh Gilman in pursuit. Gilman was looking to be a contender for Shute, but with 8 laps down, he would spin in turn two, ending his run. Not to much of anyone's surprise, the 19G of Richie Gustin was making his way through the field from starting well back in the pack, to find himself right behind the leader with five laps to go. Oh, this was going to be good!
Shute was able to fight off Gustin's advances though and took the checkers first. Following Gustin for third was visitor Randy Havlik, a regular competitor at Des Moines on Friday nights, (they had cancelled earlier) fourth went to a hard charging Mike O'Lear, and Denny Rosenberg rounded out the top five.
The hobby stock feature also went green to checkered. It would end in thrilling fashion as well, when the 69 of Calvin Dhondt made the pass on the last lap to take his first feature win. Second went to Eric Stanton who had led most of the race, third to Michael Murphy, fourth to Eric Larson and fifth to point leader Devin Smith.

VanderBeek, Carter, Wood and Nunnikhoven Visit Victory Lane at Osky
It was back to the Southern Iowa Speedway this past Wednesday after they had to call their show off last week due to wet grounds. There were no strangers visiting Victory Circle on this night.
The USRA B Mods had a nice field of 17 cars on hand. Jason "Mighty Mouse" McDaniel led the first couple of laps of the 15-lap feature, until young Cayden Carter snatched the lead away after a restart at five laps down. Later, Tyler Groenendyke who started 10th, worked his way past McDaniel to take over the second spot as Carter VandenBerg and Mike Shelton tried to catch the top three. Cayden Carter took the win and Groenendyke followed in second. McDaniel kept third place, Shelton was fourth with VandenBerg in fifth.
Only five USRA stock cars were on hand to try and tame the big half-mile. We note some of those "MIAs" from last year are the 29 of Matt Greiner, the 12M of Brian Mitrisin, the 4M of Chase Mitrisin , the 11 of Kyle Anderson, the 94 of Corey Stout, the 3 of Clayton Garden, and the 73C of Carl Yaw. All of those were quite regular competitors last year at the track. We can remember when the stock cars were a dominate class at the track "back in the day", and one or two B mains were always needed. The five cars racing were no slouches running their 15-lap feature. Nathan Wood led the entire race but at times, had three different cars on his tail; Mike VanGenderen, Kyle Harwood and Shane Weller. Wood took the checkers, repeating from his win on May 26th, Shane Weller was second, third went to Kyle Harwood, fourth to Mike VanGenderen, and fifth to Toby Smith.
The USRA hobby stocks saw 21 cars in attendance and all started their feature event. Veteran driver Jim Hughes, sat on the pole along side Steve Allen who earlier had looked strong in winning his heat. Not one lap was completed when the 10G of Dustin Griffiths brought the action to a halt as he sat in turn two with a broken left front suspension. When the race restarted, it was Matt Messemaker in the 33M car taking the lead with Hughes and Smith in tow. Meanwhile, ninth place starter, Donavan Nunnikhoven, dove to the inside and made fantastic headway as he maneuvered the 2N up into the second position. By eight laps down, Nunnikhoven had taken over the lead, which he would maintain to the checkers flying. Messemaker kept the runner up spot, third went to Kris Walker, fourth to the 99JR car of Nick Murty and fifth to Andy Coleman.
The final feature of the night was the USRA modifieds. Fourteen cars were on hand but three were unable to start. Brandon Banks and Brad Dubil both belched smoke in their heats and the 20 of John Fellman of Blue Grass, left the track early after scratching from his heat. The black 94 of Steven Blattler was looking strong from the get go, leading the field through lap ten of the 20-lap feature. At lap eleven, Zack VanderBeek made the pass on Blattler, but Blattler battled back, regaining the lead. Those two cars would race side-by-side before VanderBeek took over for good. VanderBeek took the double checkers, Blattler kept second place, third went to Colt Mather who came from back in ninth starting spot, fourth was Brad Pinkerton and fifth to Ron VerBeek.

Racing Weekend Recap
For those of you who check out this website, I apologize for the blog being late. Seems the website was having some issues, and was not available for posting new blogs. Hopefully it is now resolved and we will recap some of the racing we saw over the past weekend.
Friday was our usual stop at the Marshalltown Speedway. With regular announcer Blake Anderson off on duty at the three-day show running at the Knoxville Speedway, it meant some personnel taking on different roles at the track. Flagman Jerry VanSickle was on the mic for the night and Al "Pep" Wolfgram who is usually working the infield, took on the flagging duties.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was won by Dusty Masolini who grabbed the lead away from Mike Kennedy and then drove off from the rest of the field. Kennedy kept his position for the runner-up spot, Randy Bryan was third, fourth went to Josh May and fifth to Tim Hennigar.
In the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, pole sitter Gaitlin Leytham and Neil Follett would exchange the lead until a yellow flag, caused by a car sitting in turn two, resulted in those two cars becoming hooked when they slowed for the caution. They did manage to "disengage" but Follett would then have to go to the pits under yellow, return and tag the field. On the restart, with three laps to go, Leytham was returned to the number one spot and would maintain the lead and go on to the win. Kyle Brown was chasing the leaders most of the race but would have to settle for second at the checkers. Third across the line was Scott Davis, fourth went to Brad Iverson and fifth was Eric Elliott.
A slimmer field of only thirteen stock cars were in attendance this week. Independence regular Brian Irvine was able to tame the high-banked quarter mile in fine fashion as he started tenth and quickly drove to the front. After getting the lead away from Steve Meyer, he drove off from the rest of the pack. As the laps wound down, point leader Dustin Smith gave it his all to run Irvine down, but to no avail. Irvine took the win, Smith was second, third went to Trent Murphy, fourth to Steve Meyer, and rounding out the top five was Jay Schmidt.
The modified A main winner was Jon Snyder who was being dogged much of the race by the 2L of Adam Larson. Late in the race, Larson slipped off the track between turns three and four, handing over second place to Richie Gustin. Gustin kept that position and finished second, third went to Brett Ladehoff in his new ride, fourth went to Jimmy Gustin, and fifth to Mike O'Lear.
The IMCA hobby stocks completed the night's feature events. Point leader Devin Smith made his way to the lead quickly from starting back in the fifth row. He made it seem easy in taking the win. Michael Murphy, second in points, came home to a second place finish. Third place went to the 99JR of Nick Murty, Michael Vibbard was fourth, and fifth was Gene Nicklas.
For more complete results and info on the track, check out http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/.
Saturday was back at the Boone Speedway for their regular weekly show. We were in the area a bit early so opted to stop for a bite to eat before heading to the track. The sky was not looking very friendly, and while sitting in a restaurant in Ames, the rain came. The rain did stop and as we drove to the west side of Ames, it had not rained at all nor had it in Boone. Typical Iowa weather. Never trust what it's doing across town!
In the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature, Jeff Stensland saw his hope for a win elude him. He had led most of the race but young Josh May swung to the topside coming out of turn four as they looked for the checkered flag. May nosed by first for the win and Stensland had to be content with second place. Third went to Randy Bryan, fourth to Travis Stensland, and fifth to Mike Kennedy.
Next up was the SportMods which saw Jared Timmerman in the winner's circle. Following him to take second place was Tim Love. Third would go to Randy Roberts, fourth to Eric Elliott and fifth to Geoff Olson.
The IMCA modifieds saw a first time winner in the division as Joel Bushore led the race from flag to flag; caution free. Bushore shook off any nerves and ran a smooth, consistant race even with veteran Russ Dickerson on his tail. Taking third behind Bushore and Dickerson, was another veteran, Denny Pittman. Fourth went to Adam Larson, and fifth to Randy Havlik.
The stock cars followed up the modifieds with another caution free race. Bryan Trogdon was wanting to repeat his win from last week and wasted no time in taking the lead from starting 4th. Hot Rod Richards got into the second spot after making the pass on Mike Munson who would then fall back a couple of spots. At the end of the 18-lap event, Trogdon took his second win in as many weeks, Richards kept the runner-up position, Wayne Gifford made his way through the pack to take third, fourth went to Donavon Smith coming from 10th starting spot, and fifth was Mike Munson.
Closing out the night's racing was the hobby stock feature. Scott Lograsso came from starting 8th to take the win. Pat Mather took second from starting back in 12th spot. Third went to the familiar looking #40 of Randy Embrey, fourth went to Tony Cox and fifth to Cody Gustoff.

Sunday we returned to the Stuart Speedway for the completion of the the weathered out Ron Little Memorial features for the Dwarfs, SportMods, and Stock Cars, plus the regularly scheduled show. Unlike last week when the weather chased us away from the track, we got to see the whole program.
The Dwarf/Mod Lites ran their make-up race first. Ivan Guerra and Bob Morgan tangled in turn one before the first lap was completed and both were towed off. James May took the win as he held off Dusty Masolin and his son, Josh May. Fourth went to Johnny Mordock and fifth to Colby Oberembt.
The make-up feature for the IMCA stock cars saw pole sitter Brian Blessington lead the entire race. Blessington ran the bottom as Tim Bengard tried to catch him. Blessington took the win and Bengard remained in second. Third was Cory Bushnell, fourth went to Jeremy Gettler and fifth to Bryan Snell.
The final of the make up features of the weathered out Ron Little Memorial was the IMCA SportMods. David Schlicht looked very fast as he took the lead after starting 5th and kept that lead to the finish line. Following Schlicht across in second place was Jeremy Embrey who took to the topside in his quest to catch the leader. Third place went to Mike Pruitt, fourth to Geoff Olson and fifth to Clint Luellen.
County music singer, Shane Morgan was on hand to help raise money for a little girl fighting cancer. He had met the little girl in Nashville at St. Jude's Hospital while she was there during cancer treatment. The crowd was generous as over $1500 was raised to go toward medical bills.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature saw the top two swap finishes from the make up main as Dusty Masolini won and James May was second. Josh May took third as he had done previously in the make up race and fourth went to Johnny Mordock as it had in the first race of the night. Rounding out the top five was Angelo Montgomery.
The IMCA Sport Compact feature went to Garrett Nelson as he bested the 24 of Jamie Mahlberg. Crossing the line in third place was the 18 car of Jacob Peters but he was later disqualified for an illegal helmet and "no shoes". Now, we are not quite sure if the "no shoes" really meant no shoes at all, or that he did not have racing legal foot covering. Third would then go to Cory Kyle. Dan Cleaver and David Archibald did not finish.
In the IMCA hobby stocks, John Watson repeated his winning ways from last week by leading the entire race to cross the finish line in first again. Second went to Nyle Godwin as he came from starting 10th, third was Curt Ganoe, fourth was Randy Embrey and fifth was his father, Larry Embrey.
The IMCA Northern SportMod regular feature went to a local favorite, Mike Pruitt. David Schlicht had to settle for second place after having won the make up feature. Jeremy Embrey finished in third, Clint Luellen in fourth, and Ty Luellen in fifth. Pruitt was happy to be back in victory lane in his Mopar powered machine.
The stock car class found Brian Blessington trying to catch Jeremy Gettler the entire time. It wasn't to be though and Gettler took the win with Blessington in second. Third went to defending track champion, Tim Bengard, fourth to the 32T of Tim Feltner in his Ford powered ride, and fifth was Kenny Hansen.
In the modified feature, Todd Shute took up where he left off last week when he won the Ron Little Memorial race in easy fashion. He made it look easy again as he led the pack the whole race. Coming home in second was a crowd favorite in Josh "Happy" Gilman as he came from the tail after having to change a tire earlier. Third place finisher was Randy Havlik, fourth went to veteran driver Rex Parkison and fifth was Jake George.
This wound up another three-race weekend swing for us ending at the Stuart Speedway. For more information and more complete results, be sure and check out http://www.stuartspeedway.net/.
Until next time, happy racing!

Two Tracks, Three Races, Three Days
After our busy holiday weekend of racing, it is time for us to catch up on some rest, regenerate and get ready for the coming week and more racing. The following recap will cover Boone's regular night of racing this past Saturday night, a trip to the Stuart Speedway on Sunday for the shortened Ron Little Memorial race and back to the Boone Speedway for the Memorial Day Deery Brothers Late Model special.
Saturday night, May 29 at Boone Speedway saw a driver in the modified class finally get the win that had eluded him the past several weeks. Tim Stevens, Cedar Rapids, Iowa driver, finally visited Victory Lane. Jimmy Gustin had led much of the race and it was appearing I would once again be entering "Gustin" in the winner's list. However, on the white flag lap, Gustin developed some mechanical problems and began to slow, and his lead begin to melt. Meanwhile, Cale Sponsler had upped his position and was running third. It was another exciting three-car battle at the finish as Stevens nosed ahead at the line, Sponsler inched ahead of Gustin for second and Gustin was scored in third. Fourth went to Denny Pittman and fifth to Kelly Lyons.
In the Northern SportMod feature, a new winner found his way to victory as Darren Huntley took his first ever feature win in this division. Ty Luellen chased him across the finish line for second, Randy Roberts took third, Clint Luellen fourth and Geoff Olson in fifth. The race went flag to flag.
The IMCA stock cars had another new winner as Bryan Trogdon took the win. Second went to Jerry Gifford, third to Donavon Smith, fourth to Mike Munson and fifth to Mike VanGenderen. Smith came from starting eleventh, and VanGenderen from the tenth spot.
Pat Mather got the win in the only feature run this week in the hobby stock class. Veteran Larry Embrey was runner-up, Mark Hidlebaugh was third, fourth went to Jesse Hopkins, and rounding out the top five was Tyler Pickett. Mather started in twelveth place to advance all the way to the front.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature also went flag to flag. Leader at the checkers was the 64 car of Randy Bryan. Second place went to Josh May, third to Dusty Masolini, fourth to Travis Stensland and fifth to Mike Kennedy.
Sunday was a hot, sunny day our way. We opted to head west to the Stuart Speedway for the annual Ron Little Memorial race. The wind had been from the south but by the time we arrived at the track, it had shifted to the north and was very strong and blowing directly in the faces of those in the grandstand. We actually watched the big wind turbine shut off as we entered town, turn and restart for the change in wind direction! There was a large crowd on hand for the racing action and this race brought in some traveling drivers as well.
The IMCA hobby stock feature winner was the 4W of John Watson who had been chased by one of the crowd favorites, Brandon Pruitt. Pruitt had the misfortune to develop a flat with just a lap to go. Larry Embrey then inherited the runner up spot, and that would be where he finished. Third went to Nyle Godwin, fourth to Randy Anderson and fifth to Curt Ganoe. Ganoe came from starting back in 23rd spot.
We had been watching an approaching storm on radar, and noted the sky was becoming more ominous as the main event for the evening, the running of the Ron Little Memorial modified A, took to the track. Todd Shute jumped to the lead immediately on the start from his outside front row starting position and it was all his race from there on. This was Shute's second Ron Little Memorial Race win. Polesitter, Josh "Happy" Gilman pursued Shute the entire race, but was not able to run him down. Gilman took runner-up, Luke Wanninger was third, fourth went to Randy Havlik and fifth to Rex Parkison.
As mentioned earlier, we were not liking the colorful look of the radar, so Dick made the call to "beat the storm" and we left --and we never leave early --with the Sport Compacts, SportMods, and the Stock Cars yet to run their features. We saw lightning as we were just leaving the parking lot and learned from a text that the races were called shortly thereafter. Gee..we did something right! The storm followed us all the way home.
Next week, there will be double features for the SportModifieds and the Stock Car classes at the Stuart Speedway along with their full regular show. Check http://www.stuartspeedway.net/ for more information.
Memorial Day saw us head the vehicle back to the Boone Speedway for the annual Deery Brothers Late Model show. Forty-one of the big machines were on hand. Also on the program were the Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars, SportMods, and Dwarfs which were running for track points. Only the modifieds did not make an appearance as there was a Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA modifieds running a bit to the north in Mason City.
Heats for the Hobby Stocks, Dwarfs and Late Models were run and after that, it was decided that the track was in dire need of an early farming session. The early start time no doubt had a big factor in the condition of the track becoming "lost". The track was reworked in it's usual efficient manner, leaving a much better racing surface. A couple of more track prep sessions, kept the track in good racing condition the remainder of the night.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was won by Dusty Masolini in the #8 car. Tim Hennigar made a good attempt to run him down from starting back in 9th spot, but had to settle for second. Third went to Josh May, fourth to Mike Kennedy and fifth to last Saturday night's winner, Randy Bryan.
The IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model main event was up next. With 41 of the cars on hand, there were two B mains needed to qualify the final four cars in the 20 car field. There were three provisional starters added, the 16 of Tyler Bruening, the 92 of Josh Most, and the 54 of Kevin Blum, those being the drivers with the most series points that had not qualified through the heats or B mains. There was also a "hard-charger" added, that being Craig Roberts in the 23R car. This completed the full field of 24 cars. Forty laps awaited the fans with Kyle Wahlert and Terry Neal sitting on the front row. Neal was driving a #12N car instead of the #28C that we are most use to seeing him pilot. It was our understanding that he had wrecked that car the previous night, and was using his own car on this day. Neal led the pack early on with Ray Guss, Jr. taking over the lead at about lap 15 or 16. Neal and the 40 of Joel Callahan from Dubuque, a driver that certainly impressed us, though we were not familiar with at all, battled back and forth for second and third positions. Mark Burgtorf, a driver who has three Deery wins already this year, took over the fourth spot. When the double checkers flew, it was veteran Ray Guss, Jr. hanging on for the win, Neal in second, Callahan in third, fourth to Burgtorf, and rounding out the top five was the 41 of Matt Strassheim.
Hobby Stocks saw longtime racer, Larry Embrey add another win to his long list that goes back to the 1960's. It was not his first win of the new decade either, as he chalked up a win earlier at Boone and I believe he has won at the Iowa State Fair Speedway as well. He had little trouble in taking this win as he led most of the race without any serious challenges. Pat Mather did attempt to catch Embrey, but had to settle for the runner up spot. Third went to Aaron Rudolph, fourth to Jesse Hopkins, and fifth to another veteran driver, Donnie Gustoff.
The fast growing IMCA Northern SportMod class had 38 cars competing on this Memorial Day. They had to whittle the 24 car starting field down by running two B mains. Point leader at the track, Scott Davis chased leader Cody Warrick most of the race until Warrick suddenly exited the track with apparent mechanical problems. This handed the lead to Davis, who motored on home for the win. Second place went to Iowa State student, Geoff Olson, who came all the way from starting 13th, third was Tim Love, fourth went to Mike Pruitt, the reining Super National's Champion, and fifth to Randy Roberts.
The IMCA Stock Cars finished off the program with their 20-lap feature. Two unfortunate incidents on the start of the race, led to an immediate red flag situation. As the 556 of Terry Cornelison tumbled down the front stretch with a couple of other cars involved, there was another "mess" going on in turn one. While we did not see the accident in turn one as we were too busy watching Cornelison rolling out of turn four, we then observed the carnage left in turn one. This left second in points driver, Mike VanGenderen, towed off and out of competition before the race even began. I believe between the two happenings, six cars were eliminated before the race even began successfully. Track point leader, Donavon Smith led before halfway and Jay Schmidt in the 19J, who was making his first appearance on the year, made some hard racing pay off to get in the runner up spot. Laps winding down and with only three to go, Smith caught up to a lap car which then resulted in him bobbling enough for Schmidt to make the pass around him and into the lead. Jay Schmidt kept that lead and went on to the checkers flying first. Smith held on for second place with Damon Murty taking third, fourth went to Ryan Rose, and fifth to Jerry Gifford.
We enjoyed some conversations with columnist Larry Bontz, West Liberty, who made his first ever visit to the Boone Speedway. He made his way over along with Kevin Feller from Hillsdale, Illinois who was helping with scoring duties with the late models. It was nice to visit with both Larry and Kevin and learn of some of the racing action in their neck of the woods. Kevin will be back to the Boone Speedway come Super Nationals time for a little more scoring action.
Of special note is the announcement made by Johnny Tharp on the mic. This coming Saturday night, the IMCA modifieds are scheduled to be trying out "raceceivers" that allow officials to transmit information to the drivers, though they will not be able to respond. This should help speed up realignments, etc.
Check out http://www.raceboone.com/ for more information on the track and the upcoming schedule for the remainder of the year.
More complete results for both shows at the Boone Speedway are listed below. Happy racing!
