New winners and track champions crowned at Osky

The final regular season night of racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway ended on a great note--weather wise and racing wise.  An added attraction for the night was the MADCRA Mod Lite division which ran for the first time ever on the Monster Half-Mile. A couple of new faces visited victory lane as well.

All of the  IMCA classes, ran heats and started via the invert system as they do each week.  Some tracks choose to start the features "straight up" by points on Season Championship night, but that was not the case at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Each class was brought to the front stretch for driver introductions prior to their feature event.  That is always a feature that we really appreciate....not only for us as fans, but that the drivers get a little extra recognition.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran their 15-lap feature first.  Young Brayton Carter led the charge, looking strong as he piloted his #01 ride around the big old half-mile.  Curtis VanDerWal made his way up to second, with Tony Johnson chasing him.  With the race continuing under green, VanDerWal seized his opportunity to make the pass on Carter with a lap remaining. VanDerWal took the checkers, his second of the year, Carter having to settle for the runner up spot.  Jesse Sobbing, the track champion, made his way through the field to score a third place finish, fourth went to Carter VandenBerg and Eric Flander was fifth.

Next was the IMCA Sport Compacts.  Tonight, the track had a new winner.  John Whalen won the 8-lap feature after taking over from brother Bill Whalen, Jr. with a couple of laps remaining.  Merv Chandler nabbed second on the final lap after getting by Bill Whalen, who finished third.  Fourth was Anthony Cassat, fifth was Cory Howk and Kimberly Abbott made the trip over from Camp Point, Illinois to complete the six-car field.  Merv Chandler is the track champion for 2012.

Eight IMCA Modifieds were on hand for the final night of points racing, but two cars "gave up the ghost" before they could even compete---Jeff Waterman and Jason Riegel.  At the drop of the green flag, the field was called back for a "bad dog, no biscuit" as announcer Tony Paris calls a start by some overly anxious drivers.  That yellow restart also found the 10C of Cayden Carter in trouble with some toe out problems which would send him to the pits.  When the race did get underway, it was Dakota Hayden out in front and looking strong.  He had earlier won his heat race in convincing manner, and the feature was no different.  He sailed easily to the win, as the race went caution free after the initial recall.  He finished well ahead of second place "Hollywood" Brandon Banks.  Third went to Jacob Murray, fourth was Andrew Schroeder and Mark Widmar was fifth.  This was Hayden's first win at the Southern Iowa Speedway.  Cayden Carter, though having mechanical issues, still had a good night as he took the track championship.

The MADCRA Mod Lites ran their 13-lap feature next.  This would be the inaugural running at the track for the class.  Mike Morrill and Josh May, two drivers we have seen duke it out at the Marshalltown Speedway all season long.  Tonight, Morrill scooted off to the lead from his outside front row starting spot, only to have May, who had started right behind him in row two, tag in on his bumper.  Morrill looked to the outside, Morrill looked to the inside, and finally was able to make one of those peeks work, taking the lead by lap eleven.  May went on to take the win, Morrill finishing second.  Far behind in third was Andy Hennigar, fourth went to Randy Bryan and Dusty Masolini finished in fifth.  Thirteen of the motorcycle engine powered machines were on hand for their first time ever running at the track.  For more information on this class, check out www.madcra.org.

The IMCA Stock Car feature went 16-laps.  With less than a handful of laps in the books, disaster was avoided after last week's winner Todd Reitzler and Kyle Harwood appeared to get hooked as they came out of turn two.  The two freed themselves as they struggled down the back stretch, Reitzler continuing on, but Harwood retiring to the pits. Meanwhile, Todd Phillips had been motoring along at the helm of the race, and the Chelsea Charger, Damon Murty had made his way into second.  A yellow flag flew at lap eleven, bunching up the field.  On the restart, Murty was on the hunt and looking for the lead.  He would make it work going down the back stretch with a lap to go, stealing away the win, Phillips having to settle for second. Corey "from just across the street" Stout, came home in third place, fourth was Nathan Wood and fifth went to Todd Reitzler.  The track championship went to Matt Greiner.

The final feature event was the IMCA Hobby Stocks.  They ran a 15-lap feature.  The only yellow in this one flew at lap four when point leader Shannon Anderson found himself in the spin mode in turn one, and though he kept going, he was the one bringing out the yellow, and was then relegated to the tail of the field on the restart.  This one was led by Justin Hook who battled three-wide with Mike Hughes and Dustin Griffiths for the top spot.  At lap eight, it was Hughes taking over the helm, Griffiths in hot pursuit. Griffiths then took over the number one spot, Hughes then chasing him.  The final checkers flew with Griffiths taking the win, his fifth of the year, Hughes took the runner up spot, Hook finished in third and Bobby Greene and Kevin Fee rounded out the top five.  Shannon Anderson is the track champion.

Though there was a bit of entertainment still left for the evening---a powder puff and mechanics race---we opted to head out.  We were happy to share the night's racing with visiting friends from California who are back here for the upcoming IMCA Super Nationals, as well as Positively Racing colleague Jeff Broeg.  Make sure to stop by www.positivelyracing.com for Jeff's take of the night's racing under "Backstretch".  As a note, it was announced last night that Mike VanGenderen will be back at the helm of the racing action next year after what we would deem a pretty successful first year of promoting/managing the track.

The track will fall silent until October 5-6 when the 26th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge will once again bring the track back to action.  Make plans to attend this always excellent racing show.  Until next time, happy racing!

Stock Car win to Schmidt at the checkers!

It rained on us all the way to Boone on Saturday, stopping just before getting to the track.  A peek of the track showed it VERY wet, with puddles standing on it.  Track workers had prepped the track the night before for the expected rain, sealing it over.  By 5:30, the jet dryer was fired up and after several circuits of pushing the water down toward the infield, the farming session began--spring tooth and then repacking. Racing began just before 8 pm, less than a half hour late.  Race cars and fans arrived late, but a count of 139 cars was pretty darn good considering the weather.  No doubt, many were sitting at home awaiting the text message as to whether or not racing was going to happen.

The Mod Lite feature went flag to flag and was led the entire time by Jeff Stensland.  A couple of drivers fighting it out a good distance behind him for position were Joel Keenan and Josh May;  Keenan keeping the upper hand as he took the runner up spot over May in third.  Fourth went to Mike Kennedy over Dusty Masolini in fifth.  This was Stensland's second feature win of 2012.

Three yellows in the first four laps of the IMCA SportMod feature was a bit frustrating, but after that "third time is the charm", the race went the rest of the distance caution free.  Taylor Musselman was at the helm through lap seven.  That was when Nick Roberts made the pass into the lead, and Eric Elliott followed him into second.  Elliott could do no better than to closely chase Roberts across the finish line at the checkers as they finished first and second.  Third was Musselman who hung around at the front of the pack, fourth went to Jerry Hinton and Tom Burke was fifth.  This was Roberts third regular season feature win plus having also taken the Frostbuster back on April 8.  Earlier, a B main had to be run to complete the starting field.  It was won by Jason Mallicoat.

The 20-lap Modified feature had a mishap at lap one sending Jimmy Gustin and Mike VanGenderen to the pits for tire changes, and then both tagging the field on the restart.  David Brown led the opening laps, then Cale Sponsler changed that, as he took over the helm at lap five.  A few laps after a restart at lap nine, contact between cars fighting for third, sent Brown to the pits when contact was made...his night done.  Sponsler was out in front and sailing along easily as the laps wound down, and would take it home to the checkers flying.  This was Sponsler's second win of the season.  Kelly Lyons took the runner up spot, finishing just ahead of third place Jay Noteboom, who had started twelfth, in fourth was Russ Dickerson and fifth was Chad Louk.  Going into next week's season championship, it looks as if Jimmy Gustin holds a comfortable 31 point lead over two guys tied for second, Mike VanGenderen and Russ Dickerson.

The IMCA Stock Car feature didn't disappoint, as it seldom does.  It is still one of the most competitive classes we see, week in and week out.  This one went 18-laps caution free, which adds much to the racing action all over the track.  Much of the race up front was between Jay Schmidt and last week's winner, Trent Murphy.  Behind them, Wayne Gifford had gotten into third, and behind him was a big battle for fourth place between Todd Fisher, Eric Brown, Jerry Gifford, and Donavon Smith.  Murphy had made the pass on Schmidt by lap eight and was appearing to be on his way to back to back victories at the track.  Oops!  Lap traffic coming into play on the final lap.  Schmidt opted for the highside of the track as they came out of turn four, avoiding the lap cars as Murphy tucked it in on the low side.  This night, it was the outside lane that worked, and Schmidt snatched away the win as they took the checkers.  This was Schmidt's third win at Boone this season.  Murphy settled for second over Wayne Gifford in third, fourth was Donavon Smith and Todd Fisher held on to fifth.

Just one Hobby Stock feature was run but it took two B mains to qualify the final four cars to complete the starting line up.  Andrew Burg and Craig Graham took those consy wins.  Kyle Dirks found himself out in front the entire 12 laps, never to be really challenged in taking his first win this year.  Second and third was a different story with Matt Hudsputh winning out over Matt McDonald in a good contest.  Fourth was John Watson and fifth went to Aaron Rudolph.

Next week, September 1 is season championship night--ending the regular season at the track.  It sure isn't the end of the racing action though!  Labor Day, September 3 will be the first of six straight nights of racing in the 30th annual IMCA Super Nationals.  It is the 25th straight year the Super Nationals have been at the Boone Speedway and our 25th year of attending.  What a change we've seen!  Can't wait.  If at all possible, try and make at least one night of racing during "America's Racin' Vacation"! It's a real happening!  Happy racing!

Reimer scores first career win

It's always special when we get to see a driver earn his first ever career feature win. That is just what happened in the IMCA Stock Car class last night at the Marshalltown Speedway.  Two other classes sent winners to victory lane for the third week in a row.  Oh...and mustn't forget the night ending "added attraction" of the Truck Tug of War!

The IMCA Sport Compacts had a new feature winner this week.  Dave Moorman led the entire race on his way to victory lane.  Veteran Merv Chandler got around John Gill in the final lap as they went second and third.  Fourth went to Duayne Herb and fifth was Jer Pedersen.

In the Mod Lite division, Mike Morrill took his turn at seeing the checkers first.  Morrill took the lead early on and sailed to the win.  Josh May--who is the ONLY other winner in the class this year--got to the runner up spot, but could do no better.  Third was Tim Hennigar followed by brother Andy Hennigar in fourth and Joel Huggins rounded out the top five.  Before the feature was even completed, there was a line of youngsters lining up behind the flagstand, in hopes of being the lucky recipient of Morrill's trophy.

The IMCA Northern SportMod feature had trouble getting past lap three last night!  There seemed to be real bad "mojo" down in turn two and several cars ended up getting into scrapes, some with night ending consequences. After finally getting the third lap in the books, it would be the last yellow to fly. Gatlin Leytham was keeping the lead from his front row starting spot, but Jenae Gustin was the driver on the move!  Gustin, who had started in row five, had moved into second, tucked in right behind Leytham and was dogging him continually.  Back in the field, there was some awesome racing happening.  Point leader Racer Hulin had been having a bad night, having to qualify through one of two B mains and had started back in 22nd spot.  He had somehow avoided near disaster in the skirmishes in turn two and was making headway fast, running in fifth.  The final laps of the race were intense with Gustin challenging constantly.  It was only on that often fateful last lap that she was able to pull off the pass, and make it to the checkers first.  Leytham finished as the runner up, Ty Luellen had run in third much of the race, which would be where he would finish.  Racer Hulin made the pass late on Jake Strayer as they finished fourth and fifth. This was Gustin's third win in a row; fifth on the season.

Up next were the IMCA Hobby Stocks. for their 12-lap race.  This one turned into a two-man race between leader Brice Udelhoven and Scott Pippert.  It was looking as if Udelhoven was going to be able to hold off Pippert's attempts for the pass, but veteran Pippert made it work with a lap to go and sailed home to  the win.  Pippert was greeted in victory lane by announcer Jerry VanSickle for the third week in a row and chalked up his seventh win at Marshalltown.  Udelhoven had to settle for second, third went to Eric Knutson, fourth to Kevin Fee and Randy Embrey took fifth.

Wow!  What a race the IMCA Stock Cars put on for the fans!  Bunches...and I mean bunches, of cars were fighting all over the track for position.  Kevin Rose led from the get go only to have last week's winner Tracy Gienger tuck in right behind him and Derek Reimer battling him.  A yellow flew with six laps to go and when the green flew on the restart, there were about eight cars in a tight bunch up front.  Reimer maintained his lead and his composure though Rose and now Donavon Smith applied the pressure.  Reimer took the win--his very first career win--Rose held on to second over Smith, Geinger and John Emerson made his first trip to the speedway pay off with a fifth place finish.  Reimer was a happy camper in victory lane and with the way he has been running as of late, would think that would just be the first of more victories to come.

The Modifieds had a stellar field of cars which included three former IMCA Super National Champions--Randy Havlik, Jimmy Gustin, and Richie Gustin.  Jon Snyder got to first early and he would survive a couple of restart situations without much trouble.  He went on to the win, his third of the year at Marshalltown.  Ronn Lauritzen made the pass on Luke Wanninger in the waning laps as they finished second and third.  Fourth went to Jimmy Gustin as he was nearly the only one searching the top of the track, and Scott Simatovich took the fifth place.

The night ended with three trucks giving it a go in the Tug of War contest.  The winner seemed to get the upper hand when he got his opponent spinning his wheels, he then slammed on his brakes, and then back under power--pulling away to the win.  It was an interesting end to the night.

Next week will be track championship night.  For some classes, the quest for a track championship seems to be over.  Merv Chandler holds a huge 135 point lead over John Gill in the Sport Compact class making that a done deal.  Mike Morrill holds a nine point lead over Josh May in the Mod Lite division. Scott Pippert is 60 points ahead of Eric Larson in the Hobby Stocks, so call that one over too.  In the SportMod division, Racer Hulin redeemed himself from near catastrophe in his heat and having to qualify through a B main just to get a chance in the feature, to score a fourth place finish to keep a slight six point lead over Joel Rust and nine points over Jake Strayer. The Stock Cars finds Steve Meyer leading by 11 points over Tracy Gienger and Jimmy Gustin has it wrapped up in the Modified class, leading by 34 points over Luke Wanninger.

Time is slipping away in this 2012 racing season.  Of course, there are some big specials coming up, one of which is the IMCA Super Nationals coming up on Labor Day.  Six nights of intense racing lies ahead and we will be there for it all.  Enjoy a race somewhere.  Happy racing!

Sobbing wins again at Osky

Kids are back in school, but a chance to see Ronald McDonald still brought a good number of them to the Southern Iowa Speedway on Wednesday night.  They also got to enjoy car rides and a candy toss.  An extra class on the docket for the night was an added attraction as well, as the Iowa Sportsman Series joined the regular classes of cars to run their separate show.

After earlier running two heat races, the Iowa Sportsman Series ran their 20-lap main event, kicking off the feature racing.  It's our understanding that the series runs at different tracks throughout the year, racing once a month.  You can check their website at www.iowasportsmanseries.com for a bit more info.  Chad Scanderett led the first five laps, until a right rear ended his run.  Dave Rodda took over the helm then but it was the #18 car of Kris Walker, no stranger to the track, making headway quickly.  Walker took the point by lap thirteen and sailed on to the win.  Rodda took second followed by Gene Tish, Aaron Martin (who did double duty tonight, also running in the Hobby Stock class) and Travis Dawson finishing third through fifth.

Though only four of the IMCA Sport Compacts were on hand last night,  they did provide an entertaining feature race.  John Whalen led the first lap only to go up in a cloud of smoke by lap two.  Brad Chandler took the reins then and from there on, it was dad Merv Chandler trying to catch his son, and Bill Whalen, Jr. in pursuit of them both.  This was Brad Chandler's third win at the track this year, but his first in his own car.The previous two wins had come as he piloted the 00W car of Bill Whalen who finished third behind Merv Chandler, the runner up.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks took their feature 15-lap race, flag to flag.  Veteran racer Mike Hughes was soon to be "out in front and showing the way", as announcer Tony Paris often says. Shannon Anderson came from starting in the fifth row, to tag in behind leader Hughes.  Anderson continued in "chase mode" the rest of the way but was not able to make the pass on this night.  Hughes took his first win this year and though no stranger to victory lane in days gone by, this was no doubt his first visit in more than a few seasons.  Craig Brown followed Anderson to score a third place finish, fourth was Justin Hook and Adam Bonnett was fifth.

Only six of the eight IMCA Modifieds were able to start their 12-lap feature.  The two unable to begin the main were Wade Francis and Cayden Carter.  Carter appeared to jump the cushion and smacked the turn one wall in his heat, leaving his ride battered and unable to race.  Andrew Schroeder flew to the lead from his outside front row starting spot and pulled away.  Schroeder, running the cushion, grabbed his first win of the season.  Joining him in victory lane was his father, Randy Schroeder, who often took the checkers at the big old half-mile monster in days gone by.  Dakota Hayden finished second after having mechanical problems while leading his heat earlier. Third went to Mark Widmar a good distance behind and Brandon Banks and Scott Dickey were fourth and fifth.  Sixth went to Jacob Murray who did not finish.  This race also went flag to flag.

The IMCA Northern SportMods went sixteen laps for their A main event.  Eric Flander was looking for his first win at Osky as he led and pulled away from his competition through lap eleven.  That would be when a yellow flag flew for debris on the track, tightening up the field.  And who should be in second but Jesse Sobbing.  Sobbing, sporting a new ride.....a Jet Chassis....had worked his way up to second and was now awaiting the restart.  That yellow flag would be Flander's nemesis as Sobbing took advantage and flew to the lead on the restart, Curtis VanDerWal and Bill Gibson following suit.  Sobbing took the win, his ninth at the Southern Iowa Speedway in 2012, his 36th IMCA win on the year, and his 50th win over all for the season.
VanDerWal finished in second, Gibson took third, fourth went to Flander and Carter VandenBerg was fifth.

The always exciting IMCA Stock Cars ended the night's activities with their 16-lap feature.  Most of the real racing was behind leader Todd Reitzler in this one.  Zach VanderBeek, Alan VanGorp and Matt Greiner were battling 3-wide for second and behind them, Brad Pinkerton, Nathan Wood and Damon Murty were in their own 3-wide battle.  Reitzler rode the rim all the way in this one, VanderBeek getting into second and trying to gain ground on the low road in turns one and two.  A valiant try coming to the checkers was in vain as Reitzler kept his lead and took the win---his second of the season.  VanderBeek finished in the runner up position, Greiner made it to third over Brad Pinkerton in fourth and Corey Stout in fifth.

So ended another night of racing on a Wednesday night at Osky.  Next week will be Season Championship night, ending the season point's racing.  The track will then fall silent until Friday and Saturday, October 5-6 when the 26th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge will bring the track back to action.  This is one you shouldn't miss.  There are still races to be found as the season winds down, so find a race to attend.  Happy racing!

Close finishes at Boone determined at the flagstand

Was rain predicted for Saturday?  It took me completely aback when a chance glance at radar showed rain moving into the northwest part of the state.....heading for Boone!  We hit rain three miles to the east of the Boone Speedway and though it was just light sprinkles, appeared to have been happening for a while.  The track was shiny slick, but the tractors and packers were continuously kept on the track.  The rain drops ended and the first heat took to the track just a few minutes past its scheduled 7:30 start time.  Good thing, as the pits were full again--176 cars by my count--and a good crowd on hand.

Bryan Zehm took the win in the Mod Lite feature; going back to back for victories.  The very start of the race found Mike Kennedy on his lid in turn two, leading to a complete restart; Kennedy tagging the tail after being flipped back onto his wheels.  Tim Hennigar and Joel Keenan battled for the lead early on, having started side by side on the front row.  It didn't take long until Bryan Zehm joined in the chase, taking over the  helm by lap twelve of the 15-lap race and going on to take the win.  Joel Keenan followed Zehm to finish in second, Hennigar held on to third and Jeff Stensland and Randy Bryan completed the top five positions.

Forty IMCA Northern SportMods competed on the night.  Two B mains were required to complete their 24-car starting field.  Those consolations winners were Rick Ringgenberg and South Dakota racer Todd Boulware.  The early portion of the race was led by Levi Chipp from Latimer as he fended off the challenges of Rocky Caudle and Eric Elliott. Lap five found Racer Hulin taking an easy roll over in turn four...which turned into a nemesis for several drivers.   Lap six drew another caution when point leader Scott Davis spit out his drive shaft.  This was looking good for Eric Elliott who sits in second in points, hoping to tighten up the points battle.  Elliott took the lead but his night soon ended too when his right front appeared to dig into the track in turn four, nearly sending him for a roll.  With Elliott's night also ending, Chipp was back as the leader when racing got back underway.  Fierce fighting at the front of the field would also soon end Chipp's run when a bit of contact was made--again in turn four.  Now it was Jason Mallicoat, Joe McBirnie and Randy Roberts in a shoot out for the lead. It came down to just that, as the three cars frantically vied for position.....Mallicoat leading but Roberts giving it a last ditch effort on the final lap, and grabbing the win. Roberts claimed his second win of the season after winning back the early part of May---I believe when he was then piloting the car that McBirnie has been in recently.  Mallicoat finished as the runner up, McBirnie held third and Ty Luellen who started eleventh took fourth over Rocky Caudle in fifth.

The IMCA Modifieds had 31 cars on hand; their class requiring one B main.  That consy race went to Shay Woods.  Rookie to the division, Kyle Brown was looking impressive and appeared well on his way to grabbing his first ever win in a Modified at the Boone Speedway.  He was holding off the challenges of Cale Sponsler and Jake Durbin, and putting distance between his pursuers. A caution waved at lap twelve when Mike VanGenderen got high sided at the top of turns three and four, which would then tighten up the field.  Brown maintained his lead but with close company in Jake Durbin who was applying plenty of pressure now.
Durbin was able to make the pass with just two laps remaining, going on to the win, his fourth of the year. Brown took the runner up spot followed by Jay Noteboom in third, Jimmy Gustin in his new 2013 Harris in fourth, and Cale Sponsler in fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars followed up with their own exciting race....a near photo finish at the flagstand. Earlier, with 38 cars in attendance, two B mains were needed.  Mike Munson and Alan VanGorp took those wins.   Jay Schmidt was looking as if he was going to be claiming a win; quickly getting to the lead from starting in row five. Yellows flew, bunching up the field and now Trent Murphy was nipping at Schmidt's heels.   Donavon Smith had started back in eighteenth place and had worked his way to run third.  Schmidt's night would end at lap fourteen, when in that infamous turn four, his car seemed to shut down; his night ending. With just four laps remaining, you knew the finish was going to be a good one between now leading Smith and Murphy on his bumper.  The two ran the closing laps in tight contention, Smith keeping the point when with just a slight slip high by Smith as they approached the checkers out of turn four, Murphy was able to go under him and get the advantage as they crossed at the flagstand.  Murphy claimed win number two on the year, Smith scored in second.  Third place went to a driver making his first trip to Boone this year, Travis Shipman from Mason City, fourth was early leader Cody Clark from Yorktown, and Alan VanGorp was fifth. After the race, a rare claim occurred when Bob Daniels claimed Travis Shipman.

Two A mains were run for the third week straight in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. John Watson who had just been dominating until recent weeks, got back to his winning ways, and took home another feature win. Watson, who started tenth, was leading by lap three.  He had little trouble in keeping the lead, pulling away at the finish to claim win number ten in the regular season; eleventh including the Frostbuster.  Randy Embrey charged to the front from starting fourteenth to take second.  Third place went to Aaron Rudolph, a winner last week, Craig Graham, also a winner last week, was fourth, and Ray Stock, Jr. was fifth.

The evening closer was the second A main for the Hobby Stocks.  This one produced a brand new winner for the season in the class.  Bill Atcheson took over the helm by the halfway mark of the the twelve lapper, holding it to the finish and the win.  Curt Reed closed in the final lap but could only garner a second place finish.  Third was veteran driver Chris Jensen making his 2012 debut, fourth went to Matt Hudspeth and Dustin Filloon finished fifth.

Just two weeks remain for regular season racing at the track---August 25 and September 1.  September 1 is season championship night and then we are right into the IMCA Speedway Motors 30th annual Super Nationals starting on Labor Day.  It will be six straight nights of incredible racing action that we look forward too.  It will be fun and "Happy Racing!".

It's Gustin and Gustin night at the Speedway

It was Nostalgia and Vintage car racing on Friday night at Marshalltown--adding a little extra value for your dollars on the evening.  A well known name in racing would chalk up wins in two different divisions, the Stock Car class produced a new winner on the year, and other divisions had repeat winners.

The "cars of yesteryear" started off the feature racing.  They would be split into three different divisions.  The first was the sprint car class with five cars participating.  This one was won by Ted Rozenski.  Next came the vintage coupe class that back in the day, were also billed as "Jalopy" cars.  Austin Russell emerged the winner in this one in his #3R.  The final Nostalgia race was with the full bodied cars from the '50-'60s.  Ben Holt took home the win in his #7 ride.

The Sport Compacts ran their A main next.  For some reason, this class is struggling a bit with car count.
Tonight, only three cars competed along with a "house car".  Merv Chandler took home the marbles again tonight....getting back to his groove after his only loss of the season last week.  Duayne Herb finished second and Josh Keller ran third.

The Mod Lite division has been dominated this year by two drivers---Josh May and Mike Morrill, as the two have won all the features in 2012. This time, it was May's turn. May passed early leader Tim Hennigar to go on and take the win, his 8th of the year.  Hennigar finished as the runner up, third was Mike Morrill, fourth, Randy Bryan, and Joel Huggins was fifth.

The IMCA Northern SportMods came to the track next.  The race had to be completely regrouped when Sam Wieben found himself spinning toward the infield as the field approached the starting green flag.  When racing then got underway, Travis Peterson was the guy at the helm Gatlin Leytham doing his darnedest to catch him, and Jenae Gustin was pestering Leytham.  Gustin would then make her move into the lead after a restart situation.  Meanwhile, the 505 of Racer Hulin had cut through the field from starting fourteenth, to nab the second spot, having passed Travis Peterson.  The final laps were great racing at the front, but Jenae Gustin was not to be denied the win, taking her second in a row,  Racer Hulin finished a close second over Peterson in third.  Curtis VanDerWal, Oskaloosa, Iowa driver who has spent some time racing on asphalt a few years back, had a good run to finish in fourth. Joel Rust rounded out the top five.

Scott Pippert took the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock class.  Pippert won for the sixth time, and went back to back for feature wins at Marshalltown.  Pippert, who started twelfth on the field, caught leader Brice Udelhoven, riding his bumper in the closing laps.  As we've seen so many times lately, this one was decided as the cars approached the finish line to the checkers.  Pippert made the pass for the win coming out of turn four.  Udelhoven finished what was no doubt, a disappointing second.  Third was Eric Knutson, fourth went to Eric Larson, and Randy Embrey took fifth.

The Stock Car's 18-lap feature saw a new face in victory lane.  Tracy Gienger made the pass on leader Trevor Titus after a restart situation on lap eight and would pull away at the checkers, taking his first win of the season at Marshalltown.  The Chelsea Charger, Damon Murty was second just ahead of third place Steve Meyer, who had started tenth.  Fourth was last week's winner Trent Murphy, and Trevor Titus took the old Ford Thunderbird to a fifth place finish.

Josh Truman led the first eight laps of the IMCA Modified feature.  Lap nine found Jammin' Jimmy Gustin snatching the lead away.  Gustin, who was debuting his new 2013 Harris car, started twelfth, and "testing" his new ride, put it into the victory circle--making it the second Gustin of the night taking the checkers.  Gustin was challenged by Jon Snyder during the final few laps, Snyder only able to take second place.  Third went to Josh Truman, and fourth through seventh was a "gob" of cars crossing the finish line!  As it was sorted out, fourth went to Luke Wanninger (but since he was piloting a crate motor ride again, sans spoiler...all drivers finishing behind him were moved up a position) Ronn Lauritzen crossed in fifth (but took fourth), Scott Simatovich crossed sixth, but took fifth, Kyle Brown crossing in seventh, but scored sixth.

It was officially announced this week that the crate motor is going to be an option for the IMCA Modified class next year. Though not confirmed, we heard that the testing of the crate will be done as of this weekend. From what we have observed, it is certainly going to be competitive.  We have also heard...you know how that goes sometimes...that the spoiler will NOT be an option.

How quickly the racing season is winding down!  Seems we just got started and now here schools are back in session, and the IMCA Super Nationals are just around the corner.  Still plenty of time to catch a good old dirt track race though.  Find one, and attend.  Happy racing!

State Fair Deery Brothers show becomes Eckrich Brothers show

Monday found us at the Iowa State Fair, for our traditional day at the Fair and then the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model show in the evening.  By the time the races rolled around, it was good to be able to sit and do what we love to do, watch those cars go round and round.

The SportMods kicked off the feature racing.  A consolation race to complete their 24-car starting field was won by Rick Gladson. Austin Kaplan was the A main pole sitter and he shot to the lead soon to be chased by Glenwood, Iowa's Jesse Sobbing.  The yellows flew several times in this contest, Kaplan still continuing his lead with a lap to go in the 16-lap event.  That would be when Sobbing, who had dogged the leader through most of the race, used his skill to make the pass on the final lap.  Sobbing took the win and Kaplan had to be satisified with second.  Racer Hulin fought by Nick Roberts late in the race, as they finished third and fourth.  Joel Rust came from starting back in 22nd place, coming from the B main, to take fifth.

A 20-lap Stock Car feature was up next and they produced their usual exciting racing.  Three-wide racing on the backstretch at the drop of the green found Alan VanGorp leading the pack at lap one, followed by Brad Pinkerton---both in the familiar looking cars out of the stable of former driver John Hunnell. Before much more than a handful of laps were in the books, the race went "red" when Tom Killen rolled his #1K  after climbing the fence at the top of turns three and four. When racing resumed, VanGorp still maintained his lead with Gary Bass, Brad Pinkerton and another veteran driver out of Indianola, Jeff Johnson, digging hard to catch the leader. VanGorp continued to lead, content that those behind him were duking it out for position and not bothering him.  That is until who should appear in the picture but Mike Nichols, long time very successful racer and multi-time IMCA National Stock Car Champion.  Nichols, who had started twelfth on the field, had worked his way to now smelling the bumper of the leader.  But Nichols also had company as Bill Osbahr from Avoca was chasing Nichols!  The final couple of laps were a thriller as the three scrambled for position.  On this evening, it was Nichols making the pass for the lead and taking the win.  Osbahr followed Nichols for the runner up spot, VanGorp held on to score third.  Fourth place went to another former multi-time IMCA National Champion, Jeff Anderson, and Gary Bass hung around the front to take fifth.

With a good count of Hobby Stocks on hand, two A mains were run.  They, along with the other classes, were running for track points according to what we heard.  This one was led start to finish by pole sitter, Scott Pippert out of Elberon, Iowa.  Pippert has been having a very successful season, winning multiple times at several of the tracks we see him race at in our area.  Eric Stanton chased him across the line from a distance to capture second.  Third went to the #19 car that we heard announced to be August Bach, but it may have been veteran driver Bill Bonnett piloting it, fourth was Richard Yaw and Matt Webb was fifth.

Hobby feature #2 was also led start to finish by the winner, Dustin Griffiths. Griffiths made his way up from Ottumwa, Iowa to take home an Iowa State Fair feature win.  Randy Embrey ran second to the the winner for nearly the entire race, unable to get more than the runner up spot at the finish.  Third place went to John Watson who is back in his familiar looking ride after we learned that he nearly destroyed it a couple of weeks back.  Another southern Iowa driver, Nick Ulin from Agency, Iowa finished fourth and Bill Richards in his bright green #22R was fifth.

The Dirt Trucks were also on the program and they came to the track next.  Russ Byriel and Tony Moro grappled for the lead the first couple of laps.  Brett Moyer threw his hat into the ring and challenged the two.
Moro took the lead, Moyer following him into second, which would be how the race would end---Moro winning, having to fight his ride which suffered a broken left rear shock, followed by Moyer in second. Rick Clark came from well back in the starting field to take third, Byriel faded a bit but held on to fourth, and Billy Allen finished in fifth.

Now it was time for the headlining feature, the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model show.  Two B mains were needed to polish off the starting line up.  Tom Darbyshire and Nick Marolf won those. Tagging the tail were provisional starters....Chad Cooney for the hard charger, and point provisionals for the series, Michael Murphy, Ray Guss, Jr. and Justin Kay.  Thirty-five laps awaited the powerful machines.

The lucky pole re-draw recipient was "Hollywood" Jason Hahne with Andy Eckrich sitting along side.  Eckrich took off from that outside line and into the lead by lap one.  Ryan Griffith had just made the pass into second around Hahne when the first and only caution flag flew at lap sixteen.  When racing got back underway it wasn't long until Denny Eckrich, and older brother of the leader, had passed Griffith and was now running second.  Denny made a good run a couple of times on brother Andy, but could not make it work.  Andy Eckrich would go on to take the checkers, Denny Eckrich having to settle as runner up to his brother on this night.  Ryan Griffith held third, fourth place went to Colby Springsteen who had started back in row five, and long time racer Jeff Aikey took fifth.

So ended another State Fair race for us.  It has long been a tradition with us to be sitting in that big old grandstand and watching all sorts of racing over the years from back in the days of the "big car" Offenhauser's during the hay day of Bobby Grimm and Pete Folse, to watching the "Keokuk Komets"--Ernie Derr, Ramo Stott, Dick Hutcherson and Don White as they battled in the "late model"  IMCA stock cars.  We enjoyed our evening at the races on Monday night, made even more enjoyable by sharing it with racing friends.  One of those friends was Las Vegas Motor Speedway short track announcer Chet Christner who was back our way taking in some of his passion for racing.  Chet will be back in our area very soon as he will be sharing PA duties at the soon to be Boone Super Nationals coming up starting on Labor Day.
Until next time, happy racing!

Gustin wins Boone on a warm up night for Super Nationals!

Saturday night at Boone was a night of racing almost likened to qualifying night at the Super Nationals!  It seemed every heat was a scramble to qualify!  With 186 cars checked into the pits, there were six B mains run--- three for the SportMods, two for the Stock Cars and one for the Modifieds.

The Mod Lite division was a close one at the finish line.  Josh May did all he could do to get around Bryan Zehm who had led most of the race, but just couldn't make it happen.  Jason Whitehead chased the leaders to finish in third, fourth went to Andy Hennigar and Mike Kennedy was credited with fifth.

Scott Davis padded his point lead by taking the win in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature.  He had to fight past earlier leader Cole Ferguson from Dexter to get to that victory.  Ferguson finished in second, Chad Ryerson from Wellsburg was third.  Racer Hulin, Laurel, Iowa driver came from starting in row six, to nab a fourth place finish and Nick Roberts nipped at his heels at the finish line to take fifth.  It took three B mains to whittle the starting field to 24 cars.  Those winners were Randy Roberts, Jason Mallicoat and Tim Wilcox who came from Ida Grove, Iowa to test the waters at Boone.

Twenty laps of Modified racing kept up the frantic pace established throughout the night.  With 31 of the powerhouses checking in, they needed a B main also.  Kyle Krampe took that consy win.  Kelly Lyons, Joel Bushore and Cale Sponsler were jousting early for the top spots.  Sponsler's night ended when he had to exit to the infield.  This left Bushore at the point position and now Jammin' Jimmy Gustin, who started tenth, came into the picture. Bushore gave up his topside line and that was all Gustin needed to make the pass into first.  Gustin took the win, his third of the season, Visiting driver from Hinton, Iowa, Jay Noteboom showed his muscle by getting to the runner up spot from starting twelfth.  Jon Snyder, who had just taken wins the previous two nights at The Night of 1000 Stars in Britt, and at the Marshalltown Speedway, finished in third. Bushore faded a bit but held fourth and Kelly Lyons took fifth.

Earlier in the night after their heat races, there was a King of the Hill race for the Modifieds.  It pitted the top two from the four heats against each other.  The race, sponsored by Harris Auto Racing and John Logue, paid a nice $500 to the winner.  In the first round, Jon Snyder took out Cale Sponsler, Kelly Lyons won when Todd Shute pulled off, Kyle Brown beat Matt Meineke and Mike VanGenderen took out Jimmy Gustin.  Round two found Snyder beating Lyons, Brown eliminating VanGenderen.  This set up the final match up of Brown versus Snyder for all the marbles.  Brown wound up his 21K on the topside of the track and won the two lap shoot out.  Brown, a rookie in the class after moving up from the SportMod, was a happy camper in his post race interview.

The 18-laps of the Stock Car feature were no less entertaining with multi-wide racing going on throughout the pack.  Point leader Donavon Smith, showed why he is in that spot, making his way from starting twelfth to take the lead by lap four.  With about a handful of laps remaining, disaster was avoided when a car sitting low on the apron out of turn three opted to pull back on to the track....right in front of the approaching leaders!  Smith went on to take the win, his second of the regular season to go along with his early Frostbuster win in the pre-season.  Josh Daniels had a strong run to finish in second, and Jared Dirks from Rowan, Iowa, Alan VanGorp and Cory Bushnell finished in a tight pack for third through fifth in that order.

For the third week in a row, a hefty field of IMCA Hobby Stocks came to play and two A main features were run.  In the first of the two, Tony Cox paced the field in his 1BC ride.  That would end at lap four when his motor let go, spewing the race track with oil.  After the clean up process, it was Aaron Rudolph inheriting the top spot.  Scott Lograsso ran in second.  The finish was nearly decided when the two leaders bore down on a lap car, but no change occurred with Rudolph winning and Lograsso scored in second.  A visiting driver from Dickens, Iowa, Josh Peters came from starting in row six to take third.  Garrett Eilander, Newton, Iowa was fourth and Matt McDonald finished in fifth.  After the race, John Watson, the driver who had been  nearly unbeatable until recently, claimed the carburetor of winner, Rudolph.  This was a "pay back" for the claim that Rudolph had made back on June 30 when he claimed Watson's carb.

It was nearly the bewitching hour when the second and final feature rolled onto the track. This one was still yielding 3-wide racing behind leader Craig Graham.  Graham, from Webster City, Iowa got to the lead by lap two after getting by Jared Dirks.  Another new driver of the many on hand last night, David Rieks, who lists Eldora, Iowa as his home, made the final few laps very interesting.  He caught Graham and was able to briefly take the lead with a lap to go, but drifted a bit too high in turn four as they approached the checkers, handing the win back over to Graham.  Following those two to take third was Curt Reed, Noah Ludwig from Logan, Iowa started back in row six along side the winner, to take fourth, and Matt Hudspeth rounded out the top five.

There are still three nights of weekly points racing remaining at the Boone Speedway.  It appears from the car counts of the recent weeks, drivers from a distance away are coming to do a little testing of the waters in anticipation of the fast approaching Super Nationals.  We enjoy seeing those visiting cars and as witnessed last night, many of them are getting it already dialed in.

Get out and find a race to attend and support our great sport of dirt track racing.  Check the calendar on the Positively Racing home page for some choices.  Happy racing!

Back to back for Murphy in Stocks

A break in the hot, uncomfortable weather we've endured of late, was a welcome relief for all at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night.  Youngsters, and adults as well, got to sprint in their cardboard cars during intermission, for some added "racing" entertainment.  A repeat winner in the Stock Car class from last week went to victory circle, and one new face saw it for the very first time--ending another driver's record.

The Sport Compacts ran first and for the first time this year, we had a new winner!  Duayne Herb held off Merv Chandler at the line to score his first victory at Marshalltown.  In fact, it was the first time this year that anyone has bested Chandler at the track.  Third place went to Jon Gill, and the "house car"...unknown driver... crossed the line in fourth.

The Mod Lite 15-lap event came next and this night, it went to Mike Morrill.  Morrill got the lead by lap three and scored the win ahead of Josh May.  Both Morrill and May have won for the seventh time each this year---the ONLY two winners in this class for the season.  Randy Bryan was third and Joel Huggins and Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature went to Jenae Gustin, her third victory of the year.  She took the lead early on and never relinquished it.  She did have a bit of company right behind her with last week's winner Sam Wieben and Racer Hulin battling for position.  Even with restarts, Gustin kept her smooth line and concentration, and took the checkers. Chalk up another win for the name "Gustin"!  Wieben held off Hulin as they went second and third, fourth went to Jared VanDeest and fifth was Tyler Droste who was making his first appearance at the track this year.

Twelve laps were up next in the IMCA Hobby Stock class.  The "Wild Woman", Jennifer Hulin paced the field in the opening laps of this one.  Gary Pfantz soon got to second place and tenth place starter, Scott Pippert (say "Peep"-ert...just learned this after all the years of mispronouncing it) was in third.  Both of those drivers passed Hulin, Pippert taking the lead.  He would then stretch the lead and take the win over Pfantz in  second.  Jennifer Hulin took third with her best finish of the season, fourth was Matt Hudspeth, and with the Iowa State Fair on now in Des Moines, and no racing at his usual Friday night track, Randy Embrey ventured to the speedway and finished in fifth. Pippert won for the fifth time this year at Marshalltown.

The IMCA Stock Cars always provide exciting racing action, time and time again.  That's why they are still called "The Class too Tough to Tame".  Tonight, the 18-lap affair gave the fans what they come to see.  Trevor Titus in his Ford Thunderbird was looking strong--leading through the first eight laps.  He had company though, and Jay Schmidt, in his J & V Napa ride..and on J & V Napa night at the races, was looking determined on seeking the win.  Schmidt flew to the lead and last week's winner, Trent Murphy followed him around Titus to take over second place.  Titus would have his night end suddenly, when he was off power and rolled into the infield.  The show between Schmidt and Murphy was a good one!  Schmidt, after running his usual outside line, fell to the bottom line and was overtaken by Murphy.  With a lap to go, a bit of smoke came from the 19J of Schmidt, and entering turn three coming to the checkers, sparks flew as he broke a gear.  Murphy took the win, repeating from last week, and his fourth this year; Derek Reimer took the runner up spot.  Steve Meyer was scored in third, Michael Murphy fourth, and Schmidt rolled across the line to take fifth.

The 18-lap IMCA Modified feature ended up being a runaway.  Jon Snyder, after having scored the big victory the previous night at the Night of a 1000 Stars at the Hancock County Speedway, sailed away from his competitors to take the checkers first.  Two guys running the test crate motors, Luke Wanninger and Adam Larson, finished second and third.  Since those crate motor drivers are awarded points for where they finish, those finishing behind them are also moved up in their finishes.  Therefore, Ronn Lauritzen got credited for second, Mark Elliott for third, Kyle Brown for fourth and Kyle Krampe for fifth.  This is my understanding as to how the scoring system has been going anyway.  Snyder was awarded first place points and a win a while back after finishing second to Wanninger in his crate.

How quickly the season is winding down!  Only three more Friday night's of season racing remains at the Marshalltown Speedway.  Check www.marshalltownspeedway for schedule and other information.  Happy racing!

Sponsler takes a thriller at Boone

The Boone Speedway saw some fantastic racing on Saturday night and this time, it was due in part to Mother Nature!  It had rained mid-morning, more than an inch from some reports, and it made for a fast track and multi-grooved racing all night long.  There were over 150 cars checked in and we noticed several cars making the trip over from the rained out Independence Speedway and from Webster City which has wound up their season. A few other "visitors" also graced the field, maybe to do a little fine tuning for the upcoming Super Nationals.  The more comfortable weather also brought out a great crowd of race fans.

The Mod Lite feature went to Mike Morrill--his third visit to victory lane there this season.  Morrill got out to the lead, leaving about five cars battling for position a distance behind him.  That ended when two of those cars, Joel Huggins and Bryan Zehm, went spinning in turn one, bringing out a yellow with three laps remaining. When racing resumed, Morrill had little trouble in holding off competitors, and took the win easily.  Joel Keenan finished in second, point leader Josh May was third, fourth went to Jason Whitehead and fifth to Andy Hennigar

The Northern SportMod feature saw Tim Love and Corey Rose fighting for the lead early on. Then visiting driver, Austin Lucas from Cherokee, Iowa, who started in row six, joined in the fray. Fans were treated to some great racing by those three in the last handful of laps.  Lucas was able to make his way into second, and then soon made the pass on Rose to take over the top spot.  Lucas motored home to the win, his first at Boone this year, Rose had to settle for second, and Love was third.  Fourth went to Eric Elliott and Randy Roberts finished in fifth.

The 20-lap Modified feature came next and it became one of those "wow" races!  Cale Sponsler started on the pole spot, Chad Louk along side. Sponsler took the lead and was stretching it out. By lap six, Sponsler was cruising along in first place, Louk still in second. Shay Woods was in third from his second row starting position and the 57V machine of Mike VanGenderen was suddenly in fourth after starting tenth. A caution for a mess at the top of turn one involving several cars, erased Sponsler's straight away lead at lap nine. On the restart, Woods was in second, VanGenderen had made it into third and Todd Shute, who had also started in row five, was in fourth.  By lap ten, VanGenderen took over second place and from there on, the battle was on.  The remaining laps was quite the show between the two---Sponsler choosing the inside line, VanGenderen the topside.  For a brief moment, VanGenderen took the point with two to go, but Sponsler regained it and was able to protect his lead as they came to the checkers in the exciting finish.  There was also a lot of action happening behind the top two finishers the last few laps.  Joel Bushore made it up to finish third just ahead of Jimmy Gustin.  Gustin had lost a motor in his heat race,-- flames and all-- and had started eighteenth and had a great run to finish in fourth.  Todd Shute fell back a bit to finish in fifth.

The Stock Cars followed up with their own fast and furious racing action.  The track was fast and the 18-lap feature doled out it's share of three and four wide racing  This was looking to be a shoot out between Rod Richards, who had led from the start, and Jerry Gifford, the two duking it out as the laps wound down. As the two crossed the finish line with the white flag flying, a little bit too much duking it out became a factor as the two went spinning after contact was made as they approached turn one.  The race ended under yellow/checkered then. The lucky driver who had been running in third, Corey Bushnell, was awarded the win.  Jay Schmidt was scored in second, Donavon Smith was third and Mike Goldsberry and Trent Murphy were fourth and fifth.

There was a King of the Hill match earlier for the Stock Cars, sponsored by Harris Auto Racing.... located just down the road.  This pitted the top two drivers from the four heats against each other.  The final round came down to Corey Bushnell against Jerry Gifford.  Gifford took the $500, so even with his spin at the conclusion of the Stock Car feature, his night was not all bad.

There were two Hobby Stock features tonight...for only the second time this season.  The first one went to Aaron Rudolph who fought off the challenges of Tony Cox, the runner up.  Third was Curt Reed, Nathan Ballard who ventured over from his hometown of Marengo, Iowa was scored in fourth and Dustin Filloon rounded out the top five. Filloon claimed Rudolph's carburetor after the race.

The second Hobby Stock Feature polished off the night's racing.  Matt McDonald came from starting seventh to gain the lead by lap five and then held off the persistent challenges of Scott Pippert who took second.  Third was Bill Atcheson, fourth was Derek Moede who came all the way from Casco, Wisconsin, and Shaun Wirtz took fifth.

As a note, we were hearing regular announcer Jerry VanSickle and Ryan Clark, who came to join in with mic duties last night, calling Scott Pippert...."Peep ert".  Thanks to Ryan Clark's asking Pippert just recently, he discovered this is the correct pronunciation!  It's been years of every announcer we've heard, saying it wrong!

Four weeks of weekly racing still remains at the Boone Speedway, with season championships on September 1.  Then on Monday, September 3, the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals will begin. The six-day racing event is really a racing spectacle that should be experienced at least once.  For us, it will be our 25th straight year of attending every night of the Super Nationals held at Boone.

Hope to see you around a race track somewhere!  Happy racing!

Wieben gets first career win

It's always fun to see a driver get his first ever career win, and that is just what happened at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night in the Northern SportMod class.  There was also a new winner for the season in the Hobby Stock ranks, while all other classes saw familiar faces back in victory lane.

The IMCA Sport Compacts feature winner has nearly claimed the track as his own.  Veteran Merv Chandler scored his TWELFTH feature win of the season...having missed on only one feature, and that going to his son, Nathan.  Duayne Herb finished in second, followed by Travis Losenicky, and two new comers, Travis Ross and Trent Orwig.

The Mod Lite feature went its usual 15-laps and on this night, went to Josh May, scoring his seventh victory of the season.  The DC5 of Adam Larson led about half of the race, but May would have none of that, and over took him for the lead and went on to the eventual win.  Following Larson who was second, was Mike Morrill in third.  Between May and Morrill, those two are the ONLY winners at the track this season--Morrill owning six of them.  Fourth place went to Andy Hennigar and fifth to Randy Bryan. As a note, after checking the official finish of the races on Speednet Direct, I see that Adam Larson was DQ'd, moving the drivers up a position.  Fifth place then went to Mike Kennedy.

Up next was the IMCA Northern SportMod feature.  In the early going, Sam Wieben fought by Travis Peterson for the lead, and was looking strong.  After a restart situation, it was Racer Hulin on Wieben's back bumper and then the two put on quite the show.  Hulin made the pass and then stretched the lead---until then, one of those "oops" moments happened!  Hulin spun at the bottom of turn one, killed the car, and brought out a yellow.  This put Wieben back in the catbird seat with three laps remaining.  He would then go on to take the win....his first EVER career win, for the 14 year old!  We have watched this young man get better and better throughout the season, and we have no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him.  Believe we understood that he has a background of motor cross and some unsanctioned racing.  Ty Luellen started in twelfth spot and scored a runner up finish.  Third went to Jake Strayer, fourth was Scott Davis and fifth was Joel Rust.

The IMCA Hobby Stock 12-lapper had a "no go" on the start when a couple of cars spun. When the real start of the race got underway, cars were coming 5-wide out of turn four.  Everyone made it work thankfully, and by lap two, Josh Saunders had his yellow #52 out front and looking strong.  Saunders was keeping Eric Larson at bay behind him, but Larson was able to make the pass into first, stretch out the lead, and take the win.  Saunders took second in one of his best runs of the year, Tyler Pickett finished third, fourth went to Scott Pippert and John Watson came from well back in the starting field, to score fifth.  This was Larson's first win of the season at Marshalltown.

The Stock Cars provided their usual close, intense racing.  Trent Murphy started sixth, and was leading by lap one.  Trevor Titus and Michael Murphy were hanging close behind, Titus putting the old Thunderbird to the topside, Murphy choosing low.  The race soon turned into the Murphy and Murphy show---younger brother Michael digging to catch brother Trent.  Tonight, it would be Trent Murphy scoring the win--his third this year at the track.  Michael Murphy took the runner up spot, followed by Tracy Gienger in third, last week's winner Steve Meyer in fourth and Derek Reimer rounded out the top five.

It turned into another runaway in the IMCA Modified feature.  Luke Wanninger, running the IMCA test crate motor with the 3 inch spoiler on last night, FLEW to the lead by lap one...having started seventh on the field.  Jon Snyder got into the second spot and was soon battling with Jimmy Gustin and Ronn Lauritzen.  Meanwhile, Wanninger was pulling away from his competition. Gustin established second place and would cross the line behind Wanninger.  Following him would be Snyder, Adam Larson and Kyle Krampe.  Since Wanninger was once again running the test crate, as was Adam Larson, the points would be adjusted with both Wanninger and Gustin taking the 40 point win, putting Snyder to get second place points, both Adam Larson and Kyle Krampe taking third points, and Ronn Lauritzen and Kyle Brown; fourth and fifth. A little confusing, huh?  As far as I know, this is the way they having been handling the finishes when the test crate motors are competing.

A special King of the Hill for the IMCA Northern SportMods concluded the night's activities.  The final out come was not as mentioned above, but QUEEN of the Hill as Jenae Gustin took a pretty dominating win, besting all her challenges previously to get to the final round.  She beat Jake Strayer to take the $100 prize.

Fellow Positively Racing comrade, Ryan Clark was also in attendence last night to catch a little racing action. Be sure and check out his take of the night's action under "In Staging".

How quickly the season is winding down!  Lots of specials going on, so seek a race out and support our sport.  Happy racing!

Shute wins Osky, Sobbing, Griffiths, Murty and Chandler score as well

The Southern Iowa Speedway was back in action again after last week's "heat out" cancellation.  The heat still seems to be hanging around, but it was more bearable last night....or we're getting use to it!  Two new faces visited with announcer Tony Paris in victory lane this week, the other three classes saw repeat winners.

The features kicked off with the IMCA Sport Compacts---eight cars strong last night.  Ron McClish was a no start for the feature after experiencing heavy smoke in his heat.  John and Bill Whalen battled the first couple of laps but by lap three, the familiar number 2 car of Merv Chandler was the leader.  Chandler took the win, chased across the line by Bill Whalen, Jr. in second place. Third went to John Whalen, and fourth and fifth went to two drivers making their first appearance at Osky, Jimmy Garrett, and brother Kevin Garrett.  Trent Orwig finished sixth and Matt Beal did not finish.  This was Merv Chandler's ninth win at the Osky track this year.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock feature, Craig Brown and Dustin Griffiths challenged each other for the lead, Griffiths establishing the lead for good about lap eight.  Griffiths pulled away from the pesky Brown, taking the solid win.  Brown had to settle for the runner up spot, third was Danny Thrasher over point leader Shannon Anderson in fourth, and Kevin Fee rounded out the top five.  This was Griffiths third win in a row.

The Northern SportMods started off with Ryan Fullencamp dominantly in charge.  After his strong win in his heat race earlier, it was looking to be a good bet on him for taking the win, as he pulled away from competition easily.  Eric Flander was running in second spot, a distance behind the leader, when who should come into the picture but the familiar #99 of Jesse Sobbing.  Sobbing made the pass on Flander to take over second and was soon pestering the leader, Fullencamp.  Sobbing wasn't done yet, and by the white flag lap, had taken over the top spot, and motored home to yet another of his numerous wins.  Fullencamp took the runner up place, third was Flander, Curtis VanDerWal finished fourth and Brett Lowry was fifth.  If I understood correctly from his post race interview, this was Sobbing's 29th IMCA feature win this season, his 40th over all, and his 70th night of racing.  It was his eighth win at the Osky track this year.

Up next, the IMCA Stock Cars.  Todd Reitzler led the charge through the first few laps, but the "Chelsea Charger", Damon Murty didn't let that last long. Murty was leading by lap four and despite Nathan Wood closing in the final lap or two of the 16-lap event, Murty nabbed the win.  This was Murty's third win at the Southern Iowa Speedway in 2012.  Wood took the runner up spot, Reitzler held on to take third, fourth went to Corey "from just across the street" Stout, and Alan VanGorp finished fifth.

The closer for the night was the 15-lap IMCA Modified feature.  Billy Davis, Jr. led lap one from his pole starting position, but Todd Shute took over by the second lap.  The final five laps saw Jacob Murray tight on the tail of Shute, providing the crowd with some great close, clean and exciting racing the final laps.  Shute took the win, his first ever at the Monster Half-Mile. Murray had to settle for second, third was Andrew Schroeder, Cayden Carter was fourth and Brandon Banks finished in fifth.

The racing action concluded just shy of the 9:30 p.m. mark, making for an early night for drivers and fans alike.  As a note, there will be two weeks off for weekly racing at Osky.  However, there WILL be racing next week at the speedway.  Monday will be the Front Row Challenge and Tuesday the Ultimate Challenge for sprint fans, in conjunction with the Knoxville Nationals just down the road.  For more info on these two races, check www.oskychallenges.com.  The following week, August 15 was an "off" week on the schedule but we understand it could have been used to make up the race lost to the "heat out".  The drivers vote was not to race from what we gathered.  So...next up for regular point racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway will be August 22nd.  Since the Iowa State Fair will be going on the week of the 15th, perhaps that was a wise decision.

Lots of racing action around our parts!  Seek out a race and support our great sport of dirt track racing. Happy racing!
