Gustin and Schmidt top Mods and Stock Cars at Boone

It seems that there are several drivers on hot streaks in our area lately.  Some continued their winning ways last night at Boone.  The only regular class driver making a first time appearance in victory lane came from the Mod Lite class.  Visiting 305 Sprints put in an appearance as well, adding another track winner to the 2013 list.

The Mod Lites saw Travis Stensland holding off Bryan Zehm in the early go around of the race.  Zehm had scooted quickly up through the pack from starting thirteenth and tagging the tail of the leader Stensland by lap three.  Josh May joined in the frey and he was soon dueling it out with Zehm for that runner up position.  May was able to get to the lead by lap nine and Stensland and Zehm were now battling it out.  Some contact was made which sent Stensland many positions behind; Zehm taking over the runner up spot. The chase to the checkers was won by Josh May, who took surprisingly his very first win of the season at Boone, and Zehm held second place.  Mike Morrill finished in third, Randy Bryan was fourth and David Schmalzried finished off the top five.

The 305 Sprints were on the program for the first time at Boone last night.  We understand the class asked to come so we were more than a little surprised to find only six cars making an appearance.  Keith Carlberg from Stratford suffered mechanical issues and never made a lap on the track.  Matt Stephenson shot to the lead at the drop of the green from his outside front row starting spot.  He would never relinquish it as he took the checkers in the 10-lap feature.  Mike Philben from Grimes was the runner up, followed by Eddie Evans in third, who lists his residence as Marysville, Washington.  Fourth went to Iowa Falls racer, Bob Hildreth, son of veteran Stock Car and current SportMod driver Bill Hildreth, and Dalton Ryder from Webster City took fifth.

The IMCA Northern SportMods came next. Jerry Hinton and Daniel Tasler raced closely up front for several  laps late in the race.  Tasler, who had started ninth on the grid, had worked his way through traffic, passing Tom Lathrop for second by lap eleven. As laps wound down, Hinton and Tasler raced side-by-side, sometimes passing the start/finish line in a near photo finish.  Tasler eventually got the advantage with Hinton still challenging when the yellow came out after they took the white flag.  The race was yellow/checkered and Tasler declared the winner; Hinton taking second. Third place went to Eric Elliott who came from twelfth starting place, fourth was Tara Longnecker who has been looking good as of late in her new ride, and Brandon Williams, who had won the previous night in Marshalltown, was scored in fifth.  This was Tasler's third win of the season.

The IMCA Modified feature had a strange turn of events when a yellow came out at lap three.  Leader Robert Avery lost the handle in turn one and second place Matthew Meinecke made contact, but continued on. Jon Snyder also hit Avery as he sat on the track taking him out of the contest and to the pits. With Avery out, Meinecke took over the point, but damage would then force him to the pits as well before the green flew.  Kyle Brown then became the guy at the front when the race restarted----and Jimmy Gustin had made it to second from starting tenth.  Gustin took the helm the following lap and pulled off into the sunset and took the win easily.  Kyle Brown finished in second, well ahead of third place finisher Joel Bushore.  Fourth went to Russ Dickerson who had to regroup from a spin on lap one that brought out the caution when he was tagged by another car.  Todd Shute, who we understand was running a crate motor last night, came from twelfth, to finish fifth. Gustin went back-to-back for wins after taking the checkers last week....his third of the regular season plus scoring the Frostbuster victory.

One of the racers on a hot streak as of late is Jay Schmidt.  Schmidt took the lead at lap two and drove off from the field.  Meanwhile behind him the cars were going four wide for second through fifth.  The race was definitely behind the leader as he cruised along unhampered.  The closing laps for that second place was intense with Josh Daniels fending off Trent Murphy and Jerry Gifford holding back brother Wayne Gifford.  On the white flag lap, Murphy had surged to second ahead of Daniels but at the checkers, it was Wayne Gifford scooting to take second at the flagstand.  Murphy was third, fourth went to Josh Daniels and Jerry Gifford fell to fifth.  The Stock Cars do always seem to provide for an exciting race---though sometimes not for the win!  This was Schmidt's third win at the track this year.  He has been on a roll as of late after bringing out his new Harris ride.

The evening ended with the 12-lap Hobby Stock A main.  I did say there have been some drivers on a streak lately and it continued in this one.  Matt McAtee appeared to be well on his way to the win, leading from the drop of the green and pulling away from his competition.  Enter the caution for debris at lap eight and who should be in second but Shannon Anderson.  On the restart, the two would go at it, McAtee holding the advantage....until a lap to go.  Anderson took the point and raced home to the checkers flying, McAtee taking second.  Third was Eric Stanton who had started along side the winner in row six, fourth was Matt McDonald and Aaron Rudolph rounded out the top five.  Anderson, who won two features last week, the make up and the regular night's feature, now has a total of five wins at Boone this year.

Attention fans!  A special announcement was made near the end of the show last night.  Next week will be a fan appreciation night and grandstand admission for July 6 will be FREE.  The 305 Sprints are scheduled to be on the docket again and there will be water fun activities for the youngsters.

The next Speedway program will be the 7th Annual Eve of Destruction on the 4th of July.  There will be all sorts of fun things happening on and off the track.  There will be boat trailer races, car jumps and other death defying feats on the track.  A redneck slip 'n slide is planned for grandstand side as well.  The IMCA SportMods are the only races for this night. There will also be a  huge fireworks display sponsored by the city of Boone.

There are a plethora of races coming up this holiday week.  Seek out a race to attend at the track of your choice and support our great sport.  Happy racing....and Happy 4th of July!

Lauritzen "takes flight" for the win, Schmidt back in victory lane

Eating a little dirt from the north wind at Marshalltown last night, was well worth it!  The racing was multi-grooved and the drivers put on a show for the fans.  A couple of drivers that are on a hot streak lately, continued their winning ways, and two drivers saw the checkers at Marshalltown for the first time in 2013.

Adam Gates dominated in the Sport Compact feature, repeating his win from last week.   Gates led all laps in taking the win over second place Merv Chandler.  John Gill finished third, Travis Losenicky was fourth and Chad Larson fifth.  Gates and Chandler are the only two drivers to score wins in this division at the track this year.....each with four wins apiece.

The MADCRA Mod Lites were up next for their A main event.  Dusty Masolini led the troops the first couple of laps, then Mike Morrill took the helm and then it was Andy Hennigar taking his turn. Josh May got into the fight as well but there was no catching Hennigar as he took the checkers and the win.  He held off Mike Morrill in second and finishing a close third was May.  Fourth went to Randy Bryan and Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.

Veteran racer Bill Hildreth led the opening laps of the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, withstanding two yellows in those early laps.  Brandon Williams, a driver who is new on the scene in our neck of the woods this year, having moved to Iowa from the St. Joe, Missouri area, took the lead before a handful of laps were scored.  There was no catching Williams as he scored the victory.  Ben Kates had a good run and finished second over Ryan Ashton in third.  Geoff Olson came from starting mid-pack to take fourth over Jared VanDeest in fifth.  This was Williams' first win at the track this year.  When we first saw him race this year, we could tell that he was no newbie to the sport as he had skills right from the get go.  We also saw him take a win at Boone earlier this year.

It was an exciting finish to the IMCA Hobby Stock 12-lap feature.  Eric Stanton, who had scored a win just a week ago, grabbed the lead by lap one.  Nick Murty and Eric Larson were dueling it out behind for position and then Garrett Eilander joined them.  It was fast and furious racing for the top spots, Stanton still in command.  As the white flew, Murty was seeking a way around the leader and on the final corner as they came to the checkers, the outside move was the ticket!  Murty made the pass and beat Stanton to the checkers.  Third was Eilander, Larson took fourth and Austin Luellen came from starting near the tail, to take fifth.

18-laps of Stock Car racing came next.  These guys (and gals, as Lauren Vis raced last night) always provide a lot of action wherever we see them.  Derek Reimer looked strong in the early laps, as he pulled the pack with a nice lead.  A caution flew at lap seven, bunched the field for the restart, and Jay Schmidt was chomping at the bit in second.  Schmidt made the pass by the next lap only to have the yellow wave at lap ten, again bunching the field.  This time it was Reimer breathing down the leader's rear for the restart, but at the drop of the green, Schmidt drove off.  Things started to look interesting when Steve Meyer, last week's winner who had snatched a win away from Schmidt in the final moments, got to second and made his run at the leader.  A green-white-checker situation presented itself, much like last week's scenario between the two drivers, but this time, Schmidt was able to keep that lead, scoring the win, his second of the season.  Meyer, had to settle for the runner up spot, third went to Derek Reimer, who just held off Tracy Gienger in fourth.  Eric Knutson completed the top five.  Schmidt has been on a winning streak lately after debuting his new Harris Terminator Stock Car this month....having won two at Marshalltown and two at Boone.

A tad short on Modifieds last night, eleven cars on hand, made for no less an exciting race.  Scott Simatovich held the helm the first few laps, taking the point over Zach Rawlins.  Shortly, it was the Angry Bird car of Ronn Lauritzen taking flight as he swooped to the lead by lap six.  A yellow bunched the field at lap seven, but did not deter the leader as he maintained his lead with little trouble.  Racer Hulin was making good progress and took over the runner up spot on lap eight after passing Rawlins.  Lauritzen took the win, his second of the season at the track, Hulin finished as the runner up, and Rawlins held third.  Fourth went to "Downtown" Kyle Brown who made a late race run passing two cars and Jon Snyder hung around the front, to take fifth.  Lauritzen is a driver on a hot streak lately, taking wins at Independence, Vinton and now Marshalltown in his last outings.

As a few notations from last night, we saw Damon Murty sporting a brand new ride, which looked great in the heat race, but had trouble in the feature, taking it to the infield early.  A few new drivers showed up in the Stock Car class, perhaps testing the waters for Tuesday's Stock Car Shoot Out.  Veteran Robert Stofer made an appearance, as did Lonnie Hodges and Norm Chesmore.  Speaking of that Shoot Out coming up on Tuesday, mark your calendars as this is always a fun show.  SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts are also on the docket.  Hot laps are scheduled for 7 p.m. with racing to follow.

Cohort, (or partner in crime as it may be) Ryan Clark was in the house last night too, so check his thoughts at Positively Racing at www.instaging.blogspot.com. as well.  Everyone always has a different prospective it seems.

Get out and find a race to attend.  There is no lack of them in this busy season.  Happy racing!

Lowry takes home the money in SportMod special

It's a wonder racing even happened last night at the Southern Iowa Speedway!  But thanks to Mike VanGenderen and crew for getting the track raceable after a late afternoon downpour tried to ruin the night's fun.  When we arrived, the race haulers were lined up awaiting the opening of the pits and we were concerned that they maybe wouldn't open after seeing the puddles on the grounds! A look at the track made for even more concern, but after the crew got the pits packed down to allow the haulers in, they went to work on the track.  The first heat hit the track only about a half hour later than the normal starting time.

The 7 car field of Sport Compacts raced their feature first.  Brandon Lambert, who had earlier won his heat by a straightaway, jumped to the immediate lead from starting on the pole. Bill Whalen took over the helm at lap four and was looking to pull the field and take a victory.  Hold on....veteran Merv Chandler was creeping along in second and stalking the leader.  Whalen took the white flag with Chandler still in stalking mode.  Chandler waited until corner three to make the pass, beating Whalen to the checkers and taking the victory.
Following Whalen for third was Brandon Lambert, fourth was John Whalen and Duwayne Herb was fifth.

The Stock Cars ran their 18-lap feature next.  The early laps saw cars going two-by-two in their quest to catch leader Brad Pinkerton.  By lap nine, it was Rich Vogt taking over the point and looking strong.  Meanwhile, moving up through the pack was Nathan Wood, who had started eighth and last week's winner Todd Reitzler, who started twelfth.  The final few laps became a shoot out for the runner up spot with Wood and Reitzler locked in a tight battle.  Vogt would hold them both off to score the win, Reitzler winning out for the runner up spot, Wood taking third.  Corey Stout, "from just across the street", finished a strong fourth and Kris Walker placed fifth.  It was a blast from the past seeing Rich Vogt in victory lane.  After "retiring" for several years, Vogt has been back on the scene the last couple of years.  We recall him going on the trail with the old Stock Car Winner's Series races back in the 90's and early 2000's.

The track was really racy by now, heavy but very fast.  Some diligent regrading between races was knocking down the cushion and smoothing corners.  Twenty-five IMCA Northern SportMods were on hand for their draw/redraw special run for a $750 payday with a possible $250 bonus if they had raced at least once at the track this year.

Tyler Gross took the lead at the drop of the green flag and was pulling away as Glenn Gladson and Brett Lowry (who had started tenth) were tussling for second.  Lowry was able to make the pass around Gladson for second, and then suddenly, leader Gross pulled into the pits! This would hand the lead over to Lowry which would be the position he held at the halfway mark and the mandatory pit stop on the frontstretch.  The pit stop was ten minutes and the crews could change a maximum of two tires but do any other maintenance they desired.  We noted many did change tires...some not new, but at least taking on cooler tires, most fueled up and some shock changes were made. The last half of the race began in the finishing order at the halfway mark....Lowry in charge.  Lowry had little trouble in going the distance and took the win.  Jason McDaniel made it to second to take the runner up spot, third went to Roland, Iowa's Matt Lettow who had started fourteenth on the grid, followed by local favorite Curtis VanDerWal who came from 20th to finish fourth and Glenn Gladson rounded out the top five. Since Lowry is a regular at the track, he went home with the bonus $250, making it a $1,000 night for him.

Veteran racer Bill Bonnett put his #19 into victory lane last night in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature.
Danny Thrasher lead by lap three after making the pass on Aaron Osweiler but meanwhile, Bonnett was making his move.  Bonnett, who started eighth, was on the leader's tail by lap four.  A yellow at lap nine was not what Thrasher wanted to see, but Bonnett was chomping at the bit for the restart situation.  The closing laps were a battle for the lead, Thrasher still maintaining it on the white flag lap.  But wile veteran Bonnett was able to make the pass on the final lap and raced to the flying checkers first.  Thrasher had to settle for the disappointing runner up spot on this night, Mike Hughes, last week's winner and multiple time winner at the track this year, came from starting in tenth, to capture a third place finish, fourth was Craig Brown and Jamie Songer completed the top five. This was Bonnett's first win at the track for the 2013 season.  Absent from racing last night in the division was point leader Dustin Griffiths.  According to announcer Tony Paris, Griffiths had a chain saw (eeewww, makes me shiver) accident, and had nearly lost three fingers!

The finale of the night was the IMCA Modifieds.  Billy Davis, Jr. led this one through lap ten, but it was Colt Mather, who had started tenth, making it up to pester the leader.  Mather managed to make the pass by searching inside and outside, took the lead on the backstretch of lap ten and would motor off to the easy win.  Davis would finish a distance second, followed by Tyler Groenendyk, Tyler VandeKamp and Bill Gibson, third through fifth.

Racing concluded a bit before 11 p.m. but considering what was happening at 4 p.m., what the track and infield pit area looked like after the rain, it ended up being a good night of racing on a fast, heavy track.  The wait time for the races to start was enjoyable as we got to reminisce about some racing from the past with a driver who was observing from the stands last night.  Always fun to recall "the good old days".

Don't forget to mark Wednesday, July 2 on your calendar for the 18th annual ORIGINAL IMCA Budweiser Great American Stock Car Shoot Out.  The Stock Cars will be running for $1,500 to win and $100 to start the feature.  The IMCA Modifieds, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts will also be running.  Please note the early start time---hot laps at 6 and races at 6:30.  The city's huge fireworks display will follow the races.  Happy racing!

Two features to Anderson-----Jammin' Jimmy, Elliott, Daniels and Morrill take the rest

For those that may have arrived a little late last night at the Boone Speedway, you missed out on the bonus race of the night.  The rained out Hobby Stock feature from last week was run the very first thing....starting at 7:15.  They did a quick farm session immediately after that was completed......then it was on to the regular program of the night.

The make up feature for the Hobby Stocks was originally announced to take up where it left off last week, at two laps down.  However, that call was revised to having it a complete restart and the full twelve laps were run.  Shaun Wirtz led the first five laps, but was soon to be chased by Shannon Anderson in second.  Anderson, who had started tenth, wasted no time in making the pass for the lead and then pulled away for the easy victory.  Aaron Rudolph finished a distant second, and a distance behind him in third was Eric Stanton. Stanton had to fend off Adam Bonnett in fourth at the line.  He was followed by Curt Reed who rounded out the top five.

The first of the regular night's A mains was the usual MADCRA Mod Lite's. Last week's winner Mike Morrill put his #6 ride to the lead by lap two and was never seriously challenged from there on, repeating his victory.  Josh May came from starting tenth to take the runner up spot.  Travis Stensland outlasted Dusty Masolini as they went third and fourth in that order; Randy Bryan finishing fifth.

In the beginning of the SportMod feature, we were fearing that the full "super" moon was having it's affect on the drivers.  But after the third yellow, things went pretty smoothly.  Cody Hennings was leading as the field restarted on lap five of that third caution, but he soon had company!  Eric Elliott had flown through the field from his sixteenth starting position and was soon giving the leader fits.  Elliott had the lead by lap nine and though one more yellow would rise up to stop the momentum of the field, Elliott pulled away to the easy win. Hennings held the runner up spot, veteran Rick Ringgenberg finished in third and Cory Rose came from row five to finish fourth and fifth place finisher Geoff Olson came from row seven to complete the top five. This was Elliott's second win at the speedway this year.

The IMCA Modified's got after it next for the 20-lapper. Early leader Joel Bushore was flying on the topside as were most of the challengers directly behind him.  One of those, Jimmy Gustin who had started tenth, got on Bushore's bumper, and began harassing the youngster.  A lap car a bit after mid-way of the race, was all it took for Gustin to take advantage of the situation, making the pass for the lead by swooping to the low side. Bushore hung close but it was no cigar on this night, as Gustin took the win, his second of the regular season.  He also won the track's Frostbuster opener.  It was close for third place but Jake Durbin would win out over Todd Shute, and fifth went to Randy Havlik.  As a note, Shute gave some live streaming viewers a fun prospective. We understand he had an Xsan camera on board as they did a bit of testing and tuning with thoughts of the Super Nationals looming in the not too distant future.

The IMCA Stock Cars put on their usual exciting show for the fans.  Josh Daniels put his 25J to the point early on, and was dogged much of the race by his father Bob Daniels in the 25D.  Most of his pursuers were following the leader's lead, and making the bottom portion of the track work for them.  However, one car had opted for the top.....and he was flying!  Wayne Gifford was the odd man out, but it seemed to be working for him as he reeled in cars. At the checkers though, it was Daniels taking the win, and Gifford could garner no more than the runner up spot.  Third went to Cory Bushnell with his tattered right side minus much sheetmetal, the winner's dad Bob Daniels hung around the front to finish in fourth and Donavon Smith was fifth.

There was still one more feature remaining to close out the night.  The second of the night Hobby Stock feature got off to a bad start when David Rieks got it up on the right side out of turn two....showing the entire bottom of his car, and then ending that with a head on sudden stop into the wall.  Thankfully he was okay.
Shannon Anderson took the lead away from Matt McAtee on lap two and looked comfortable but Eric Stanton had other ideas as he came up from row six to put the pressure on the leader.  That was all he had though, as Anderson took the win----his second of the night, Stanton taking second.  Third was early leader Matt McAtee, fourth went to Bill Richards and Curt Reed was fifth.

It has been announced that the next three shows, which include next week June 29, the special July 4 Eve of Destruction and huge fireworks display, and the July 6 regular program will have an increase in admission.  The two weekly shows will include the 305 Sprints.  All three shows will have a grandstand admission of $15, with kids $7.  Pit passes for the driver only will be $20 and all others at $25.  Just as a heads up to everyone.

Happy racing!

Carter and VanDenBerg take dominate wins, Meyer takes thrilling Stock Car victory

It was the first day of summer on Friday and it finally felt like it.  It was a warm night for racing at the Marshalltown Speedway and the racing was hot as well.  Five of the six classes saw the winners take dominate wins, but the Stock Car feature was a different story!

The IMCA Sport Compacts had eight competitors as they ran their 10-lap feature.  Adam Gates led by lap one and never looked back.  Gates took the win by a comfortable margin.  Veteran Merv Chandler was the one doing the chasing of the leader on this night, scoring the runner up spot.  Dave Moorman was third over John Gill and AJ Witten in fourth and fifth respectively.

The MADCRA Mod Lite saw the leader pull away from the pack in taking his win as well, but he had to work his way through traffic to get to that lead.  Mike Morrill led in the early laps with Josh May nipping at his heels.  A yellow at lap ten of fifteen, bunched up the field. At that point, sitting in third behind leader Morrill and May in second was Andy Hennigar who had flown through the field from starting in eight....the yellow just what he was looking for!  Hennigar passed his two opponents for the lead by the following lap and pulled away.  Hennigar took the win by a good distance, Morrill fought off Josh May as they finished second and third.  Chargin' Charlie Brown was fourth and Eric Hendrickson barely held off Dusty Masolini to score fifth; Masolini getting sixth. This was Hennigar's third win of the 2013 season.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran their usual 18-lap contest.  This one had a tough time getting going as two yellows flew even before the first lap was scored.  Those would not be the only cautions though as four more yellow rags waved before it was completed.  Carter VanDenBerg made great headway early as he led by lap two, having started sixth.  VanDenBerg withstood the ensuing cautions and restarts, maintaining his lead and in the last eight laps, pulled away from his nearest competitor and scored the win.  Second place went to Brad Iverson who had chased the winner most of the race.  Eric Elliott started ninth to garner a third place finish.  Fourth place went to Montezuma's Brett Lowry with a good showing after starting back in twelfth, and rounding out the top five was Geoff Olson. VanDenBerg took his first win at Marshalltown this year as his usual Friday night track is at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson and it was idle last night.

The Hobby Stock feature saw another driver take his win easily as Eric Stanton scored his first win of the season at the speedway.   Eric Larson led the opening laps of the 12-lapper, but by lap five, Stanton had copped the lead.  From there on, Stanton had little trouble in his quest for the checkers and in the closing moments, pulled away for a comfortable win over Larson in second place.  Third went to Nick Murty, Bill Bonnett came from starting eleventh, to take fourth and Gary Pfantz completed the top five.

What an exciting finish to the 18-lap Stock Car feature!  This one was looking as though Jay Schmidt was going to continue his winning ways with his new Terminator car by Harris.  He took the lead on the first lap, put his ride to his usual top side line, and was sailing along comfortably ahead of his competition. Meanwhile, there was action galore behind him  with several cars fighting for positions second through fifth.  Steve Meyer overtook Tracy Gienger for second and Damon Murty was fighting hard behind Gienger as he fended off Dusty Vis.  The infamous yellow flag would rear it's ugly head at lap fifteen when an incident at the pit road exit left fluid all over the top of the track---and setting up a shoot out for the last three laps.  Schmidt  had his comfortable lead vanish on the restart as he had Meyer, Murty and Gienger chopping at the bit close behind him.  On the restart in turn three, Schmidt hit a bit of the remaining liquid left on the track, faltering just enough for Meyer to get around him and Gienger as well.  Meyer would then go on to capture the win, Schmidt recovered to take the second spot ahead of Murty in third, Gienger falling to fourth and Slater's Eric Knutson made a late rally to take fifth.  This was Meyer's first regular season win at the track, after taking the Frostbuster win back on April 5.

The night ended with the 20-lap Modified feature.  Cayden Carter leaped to the lead from his pole starting position and headed directly to his preferred spot on the topside of the high banked 1/4 mile.  While Carter sailed along comfortably in the lead, fighting behind him was Kyle Brown and Ronn Lauritzen.  Lauritzen's Angry Bird car soon took over the runner up spot and his chase was on to catch Carter.  By lap twelve, it was Jammin' Jimmy Gustin making his move to take over third place and Snyder towed along with him to get fourth past Brown.  In the closing laps, Carter continued his dominate run on the topside and scored the easy victory.  Ronn Lauritzen took second---the spot he had held most of the race, third went to Jimmy Gustin, Kyle Brown finished fourth after Snyder suffered a flat tire on the final lap, and Kyle Krampe took fifth after starting from row six.  Carter snagged his third win at the track this year.  He and cousin Carter VanDenBerg who had earlier won the SportMod feature, enjoyed their first victories ever on the same night, at the same track.

It will be right back to racing next Friday night at Marshalltown with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.  Tonight we head to the Boone Speedway for our usual Saturday night home.  It will kick off racing tonight with the make up feature from last week's rained out Hobby Stock A main.  Enjoy a race at your favorite track somewhere in support of the racing passion we love. We enjoyed our evening with cohort with Positively Racing, Ryan Clark.  Be sure and check his thoughts of the night's racing as well at www.instaging.blogspot.com.  Happy racing!

Stewart flies to HDT win at Donnellson

It was a beautiful day for a race as we turned our vehicle to the southeast and headed to the Lee Country Speedway in Donnellson last night.  There were a lot of people ready for some racing by the appearance of the stands full of fans, and the 123 (by our count) cars and over 1100 people in the pits!  The Hawkeye Dirt Tour for Modifieds was the headliner for the night and a new winner for the series showed how it's done on the fast 3/8 mile track. NASCAR driver Kenny Schrader joined the Modifieds on the Budweiser Open Wheel Night.  The 360 Sprint Invaders, IMCA Northern SportMods, IMCA Stock Cars, and the IMCA Sport Compacts also took their turn on the speedway. The SportMods, and Sport Compacts were running for track points, but according to promoter Mike VanGenderen, not the Stock Cars as they ran for a previously rained out $500 to win special event.

We saw the most Sport Compacts we've ever seen last night as 21 of them raced for a win. Adam Gates had little trouble in claiming the win as he lead all laps. Chuck Fullencamp trailed him the entire way, taking the runner up position.  Third was Josh Barnes, fourth went to Bill Whalen, Jr. and Austin Becerra was fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars went 18-laps in their A main event.  This class was added to the originally scheduled program as a make up from a cancellation as they ran for a $500 payday.  John Oliver, Jr. and Jason Cook had all eyes on them as they ran upfront, locked in a tight battle for the point position. Oliver, the leader, preferred the top line, while Cook established himself low. After the halfway mark, Cook made the pass for the lead.  The two broke away from the rest of the pack in the closing laps, Cook taking the win, Oliver having to settle for the runner up spot.  Nathan Wood out fought Ryan Cook as they finished third and fourth, and Abe Huls came from starting mid-pack to finish in fifth.

The Sprint Invaders found 29 cars doing battle for the coveted 20-car starting field.  After a B Main was run to establish the final four cars to tag the feature event, it was time for the $1,200 run for the glory.  Jon Agan would dominate the race as he took the lead from the get go and led all laps of the 25-lap main.  He was chased the whole distance by Russ Hall.  Veteran racer Wayne Johnson, who has come back from nearly  losing a foot in an accident a while back, took third after starting 18th.  Randy Martin and Ryan Jamison were fourth and fifth.

The IMCA SportMods ran next in their 18-lap A main.  The 20AB of Bobby Anders and the 3 of Tony Dunker went at it up front for much of the race as they wrestled for the lead.  Carter VandenBerg, who had started well back in the pack, joined in the tussle and Phillip Cossel came along for the fun too.  The closing laps of the race were rather hard to get completed as a yellow at 15 laps in, brought about a restart and bunching up the field.  At that point, Anders held the lead with VandenBerg in second, Dunker third and Cossel in fourth.  The run to the checkers from there on was thrown out the window...several times, as the yellow flew with a lap to go.  After a false start again, another green-white-checkered finish was called for, this time the cars realigning for the restart in single file.  Dunker was able to make the pass for the lead in the waning moments, and nabbed the win away from Anders, who finished as the runner up.  Crossing in third was the #15 of Phillip Cossel, but a check of the offical results shows that he was disqualified...for unknown reasons to us, thus handing third over to Carter VandenBerg.  Fourth went to Derek St. Clair and Brett Lowry, the point leader at the track, and who had severely damaged his race machine the previous night at Osky, finished in fifth.

The IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour for the Modifieds ended the night's entertainment in a 30-lap contest.  Missouri driver Hunter Marriott and Burlington's Steve Stewart started on the front row.  After a yellow at lap one, this one would go the rest of the distance caution free. Stewart established himself at the front of the pack and drove off from his competitors.  Lap traffic was no bother to him and he easily took the win in comfortable fashion.  Gilman, Iowa's Richie Gustin, who had started in row seven, wound through the traffic to take over second place by the half-way mark.  There was no catching Stewart though, and Gustin would have to be content with second place.  Hunter Marriott finished third ahead of Scott Dickey in fourth and it was the Angry Bird's car of Ronn Lauritzen coming from starting eleventh, to take fifth place.  NASCAR's Kenny Schrader finished in sixth after starting back in row eight.  Gustin, who was leading points going into the evening, padded his points lead by finishing in second.

There was a LOT of racing last night at the Lee County Speedway.  The track was in great shape, making for excellent racing low, high and in between.  Hats off to promoter Mike VanGenderen and crew for a great night of racing.  The show was run in an efficient manner with no down moments and though it was a late night with the racing concluding about 11:25, we could see no way it could have been done any better.
As a note to anyone thinking of attending a night of racing at the Lee County Speedway as it is normally on Friday nights, they will be having a night off, tonight June 21.

Get out and find a race to attend somewhere in your area.  We all have to support the sport we all love so much.  Happy racing!

Osky fills pits with 100+ cars. Marolf scores Late Model win, Gustin and Reitzler take Modified and Stock Car victories

What a beautiful night for racing it was Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway.  The pits were full with over 100 cars checked in on a night when the Late Models came back to run the Monster Half-Mile and the Vintage/Nostalgia cars also came to play.  Three drivers just keep racking up the feature wins at the track and new faces visited victory lane in the Late Model, Modified and Stock Car classes.

The Sport Compact class saw a record TEN cars vying for a win.  However, the outcome was as it often is with Merv Chandler taking the win....his fourth of the year and eleventh over all. John Whalen finished as the runner up followed by Bill Whalen, Jr., Kassidy Kirkpatrick and Matt Moore; third through fifth.

Things were shook up a little last night for running order, as the Stock Cars took to the track next. Grinnell's Todd Reitzler had the lead at lap one from his second row starting spot, and would dominate the rest of the seventeen laps on his way to his first win at the speedway this year.  Damon Murty, "The Chelsea Charger" would be the "chaser" this time, but was unable to garner more than the runner spot.  Behind the two front runners, who had now broken away from the pack, it was Rich Vogt, Brad Pinkerton, Zack VanderBeek, Jason Cook and Corey Stout all wanting that third spot...... and a show they made of it!  When it was all said and done, VanderBeek would claim that third place, followed by Vogt, Pinkerton, Jason Cook and Corey Stout as they went fourth through seventh.  Only a caution at lap one would slow the entertaining feature.

It was the IMCA Late Models next with their third appearance of the year at Osky.  The 10-car field ran for 20-laps and it was led that entire distance by winner Nick Marolf.  Marolf, who started on the pole, had little trouble maintaining his lead even through lap traffic, pulling away from his competition.  Then, at lap 18, the only yellow would wave, bunching up the field for the green-white-checkered finish.  This would put Todd Cooney close on Marolf's tail on the restart.  Marolf didn't let that deter him, as he sailed home to the feature win, Cooney having to settle for second.  Third place was Keokuk's Tommy Elston and 16 year old Spencer Diercks, this year's only other winner in the Late Models at Osky, came from eight starting spot, to finish fourth, and Double D, Darrel DeFrance was fifth.

It was their usual 18-lap feature for the IMCA Modifieds.  Gilman's Richie Gustin led the charge from his pole starting position. Scott Dickey took the second spot early in the race, but Gustin would stretch his lead over him and the rest of the field.  Meanwhile, Cayden Carter had mounted a run from his fourth row starting spot, and by lap eight, had made his way into the runner up spot past Dickey.  A yellow at lap fourteen would then wipe out Gustin's big lead on the field, tucking Carter in behind him on the restart.  Carter would attempt a run on the leader, but Gustin had it covered, winning by a comfortable distance as the checkers waved.  Carter had to settle for the runner up spot, Dickey held third, and Brandon Banks and Tyler VandeKamp (who announcer Tony Paris was calling "The Flying Fishstick" last night) finished fourth and fifth.  This was Gustin's first win at the track this season.

The Hobby Stocks found Mike Hughes back in victory lane for the fourth time this year.  Hughes, who started in tenth spot, fought through door-to-door, multi-wide racing to take the lead at lap seven.  Bobby Greene, the early race leader finished in second after holding off Justin Hook and Bill Bonnett who finished third and fourth. and Danny Thrasher rounded out the top five.

The SportMods finished off the regular classes of racing with their 16-lap event.  Curtis VanDerWal took over the lead at lap two and that was all she wrote.  VanDerWal pulled away to a HUGE lead over the field as the race went caution free the rest of the way.  VanDerWal sealed his fourth win of the season, finishing well over a half-lap ahead of second place, Carter VandenBerg. Ben Kates was passed by VandenBerg on the final lap to score third place, fourth was Eric Flander and Jason Hall completed the top five.

An added bonus on the evening was the appearance of the vintage/nostalgia cars.  It was fun to see the cars of yesteryear circling the track.  One in particular that caught our eye was the white #4 machine that looked to be from about the era of the Marmon Wasp....winner of the first ever Indy 500 in 1911.

It was a great night of racing.  The track provided great multi-wide racing and stayed smooth, top to bottom all night long.  It was great to see the pits packed again at the track, and fun to see more and different drivers coming to try and tame the Monster Half-Mile each week.  Next week, it will be Trick or Treat night for the youngsters as they are invited to visit the participating drivers on the frontstretch before racing begins at 7:30.

We are off to Donnellson, Iowa tonight for the running of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour and NASCAR star, Kenny Schrader will be racing.  Also on tap at the Lee County Speedway, are the Sprint Invaders and the IMCA SportMods and Sport Compacts.  Hot laps are 7 and racing at 7:30.  We note that this week, the HDT series has revised their rules a bit, to include just EIGHT of the driver's best finishes of eleven races, instead of the original ten of thirteen.  This is due to the fact that a couple of races were rained out and are not going to be made up.  Head to Lee County Speedway tonight, for what will no doubt, be another night of racing action not to be missed.  Happy racing!

Brown, Schmidt and Tasler repeat wins, Morrill sees victory lane for the first time

After last week's rain out, it was back to business at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night.  It was nice to see that all of the "stuff" on radar was not looking to bother racing this week-----but what would the night bring?  What it did bring was three drivers repeating their wins from this season and another getting back to victory lane for the first time this year.

The MADCRA Mod Lites didn't get off to a good start with the night's feature racing.  Two red flags were thrown, one when Randy Bryan took a high flip out of turn two, and a few laps after the restart, Bryan Zehm took an easy roll in the same area.  Both drivers were okay, but their night was done.  Mike Morrill had taken the lead by the first lap from his second row starting position.  That would be the spot he would keep throughout the entire 15-lap A main.  David Schmalzried and Charlie Brown pestered the leader for a while, but then it was Josh May making his way into second, taking his turn to try and catch the leader.  It didn't happen, as May had to settle for the runner up spot; Schmalzried taking third.  Fourth went to Andy Hennigar who came from starting in row five, followed by Brown.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had a halt in their action early in their 18-lap event when Jerry Hinton rolled on the backstretch.  Hinton, who had destroyed his car earlier in the season at Boone, had just returned to competition at the track.  He was not injured, but it will be back to the drawing board and more work to do on the race car.  When action got back underway, it was still Daniel Tasler at the helm as he led from the drop of the green flag.  Tasler was fighting off Jesse McCollough and Eric Elliott by lap eight.  McCollough would loose the handle, allowing Elliott to surge past for second place, and McCollough fighting to hold on to his ride, dropping many positions.  Anthony Onstot would take advantage of the situation as well, getting into third.  There was no catching Tasler though, as he finished first at the checkers, his second win of the season, Elliott took second and Onstot was third.  Fourth place was Tim Love coming from row five as he started along side Elliott, and Cory Rose started just ahead of the two in row four, to finish in fifth.

The IMCA Modifieds came next and David Brown got the jump from his outside front row starting spot, but veteran Denny Pittman, who has seen many a lap around the Boone Speedway over his racing career, was in hot pursuit of the leader.  Not far behind and breathing down his tail, was youngster Joel Bushore.  That would be the running order through the half way mark of the 20-lap A main, but then a yellow would fly at eleven laps down.  No doubt, this was something the leader Brown did NOT want to see.  However, Brown was still able to maintain his lead on the restart and hoping for no more yellows.  That wasn't to be, as lap seventeen brought out the yellow rag again, and bunching the field up on the restart.  Bushore had managed to make the pass around Pittman and was now riding in second, glad for his opportunity on the restart.  Brown was not rattled with Bushore's pressure and kept that point position to the checkers flying, Bushore having to settle for second.  Third, fourth and fifth was a real battle with Jake Durbin taking third, holding off Cale Sponsler in fourth and high flying Jimmy Gustin came from row six, to finish in fifth. This was Brown's second win at the speedway this year.

Don Vis and Eric Brown started on the front row of the Stock Car feature, and it was Vis getting the jump and the early lead, Brown settling in behind him. It was soon to be a dog fight when John Watson, the driver who jumped up from his dozen or so wins in the Hobby Stocks last year at the track, and Jay Schmidt coming from row four and moving up to challenge the leader. Vis would fall back in the field, leaving Watson and Brown to swap the lead a couple of times, but Schmidt lurking in third, just waiting for his moment.  Schmidt put it to the topside of the rough track, riding his car like a bucking bronco at times, and nabbed the lead at lap twelve; never to give it up as he raced to the checkers.  Brown finished second ahead of John Watson in third, fourth was Cory Bushnell and Donavon Smith came from row five, to round out the top five positions.  Schmidt repeated his win from June 1, and no doubt, pleased with his new Harris Stock Car as he's been very successful as of late.

We had noticed the clouds building high to the south of the track and kept checking radar.  Until the start of the Hobby Stock feature, we were hoping they were not going to be an issue, since nothing had shown up on radar.  Well....that is until a few sprinkles began to fall and the surprise pop up cell came to be noticed.  The 12-lap Hobby Stock feature started, but it was but two laps in the books when a yellow flew.  Just as that happened, the sprinkles became heavier and it was not long until the decision was made to call it a night.  Next week's races will begin with the make up feature for the Hobby Stocks at two laps down.

The past week's rains had done a number on the track as the usually smooth surface kept developing some major ruts, especially high in the corners.  The usual farming session and numerous trips around the track with the John Deere's between races, did not smooth the track as much as desired.  Seems Mother Nature will not let anyone forget her this year.  She is keeping everyone on their toes what with the farmers woes with their planting, the flooding, the storms, and on and on.

We plan to head down to the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa this coming Thursday, June 20th, for their running of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour plus the Sprint Invaders.  NASCAR driver Kenny Schrader will be on hand racing against the HDT competitors.  Joining the Modifieds and the Sprint Invaders will be the IMCA SportMods and the IMCA Sport Compacts.  Make plans to attend as the trip to southeast Iowa should be well worth it.  Happy racing!

Osky wins to Dickey and Wood for first time in 2013, a thriller in the Hobby Stocks as Griffiths takes checkers

What a night at the big ole monster half-mile in Oskaloosa!  It was fan appreciation night, with free grandstand admission and it was a packed house.  For those that made their way to the races for the first time, I'm sure there will be some returning to enjoy the excitement they witnessed last night!

The Sport Compacts ran first, four of them in attendance.  Bill Whalen, Jr. led the first lap until seasoned racer Merv Chandler took over by lap two.  It was a case of chasing Chandler from there on as he took another win, his third at the track this year.  Bill Whalen, Jr. took the runner up spot, while John Whalen came home in third, and Shawn Cooney finished fourth.

What a finish it was in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature!  The early laps of the 15-lap event saw Bill Bonnett leading the pack, Dale Porter and Danny Thrasher chasing him.  Meanwhile, the "tail-end Charlie" starter, Mike Hughes had been making headway steadily through the field, and was running in fourth at lap eleven.  With just a couple of laps remaining, things got really interesting, as Bonnett continued his lead, Hughes had gotten to second and was pressuring the leader, and hot on their tails were Dustin Griffiths and Dale Porter.  It was a real shoot out in the closing moments of this one and one that brought the huge crowd to it's feet!  As the cars came to the checkered flag, Bonnett kept his line in the middle of the track, but two of his competitors chose the outside lane, another the inside.  It was Dustin Griffiths swinging to the outside of leader Bonnett and Dale Porter followed suit.  Mike Hughes opted for the inside line and as the cars crossed under the checkered flag it was Griffiths making the surge to the line first, taking the win.  Porter "drafted" his way into second, Hughes was third, and the guy leading as they came out of turn four, Bill Bonnett, ended up in fourth!  What a finish!  Craig Brown rounded out the top five. This was Griffiths second win of the season, having won back on April 24th.

The 16-lap SportMod feature followed the Hobby Stockers.  Curtis VanDerWal was dominate in this one, taking the lead at lap two, after starting in seventh, and pulling away.  Only one yellow at lap three for debris, would slow the field.  VanDerWal pulled away from his competitors by a near straight away at times, and won in easy fashion.....his third at the track this season.  Jason McDaniel finished a distant second, third was Carter VandenBerg a good distance behind, Tony Johnson and Brett Lowry completed the top five.  VanDerWal thanked Eric Flander in his Victory Lane interview as he ran a borrowed radiator from his fellow competitor.  Love it when racer helps racer!

Next up was the 18-lap Stock Car feature.  This one started out with a complete restart situation when Carl Yaw got crossed up just past the green flag, scattering cars. When things got underway, Rich Vogt led the field in the opening laps, but a herd of cars were behind him in quest for the top positions, sometimes going three, four and five wide.  The cluster got sorted out a bit by lap eight, as Nathan Wood was now in command.  Ninth place starter, Jason Minnehan made the haul down from Churdan again, and had made his way into second as the two were in a break away from the rest of the field.  A caution flew at lap fourteen, bunching the field and on the restart, Wood pulled off to the lead again, Minnehan behind him and Jeff Joldersma close behind.  As the field took the white flag, contact was made between Minnehan and Joldersma in turn two, Minnehan getting the worst of the deal and falling out, but Joldersma continuing on, but many positions behind. Wood took the checkers, Kris Walker avoided the confusion the previous lap and took the runner up spot, newcomer on the night, Derek Kirkland finished in third, Corey Stout, "from just across the street", came home in fourth and Jason Cook was fifth. This was Nathan Wood's first win in 2013, after a year or more's absence.

A great field of 18 IMCA Modifieds came to play last night.  Scott Dickey took advantage of his pole position and had no trouble in leading the entire 18-laps to the checkers.  The track, slick and black by now, provided plenty of passing back in the field.  Cayden Carter ran in the second spot much of the race, but by lap fourteen, it was three wide as he was trying to fend off Jacob Murray and Casey Greubel.  Greubel's undoing came shortly, when he clipped a tractor tire in turn four, and ended up in an easy roll.  He was okay. When the action got back underway, with Dickey still in control, Murray was able to make the pass into second and brought Jesse Sobbing along with him.  Todd Shute followed up and got into fourth.  Little change occurred to the checkers in the closing laps, as Dickey took the win, his first at the track this year, Sobbing made the pass on Murray as they went second and third.  Fourth went to Todd Shute and Carter held on to finish fifth.

A BIG thank you to promoter Mike VanGenderen for the fan appreciation night.  It appeared to be a HUGE success, with an enthusiastic crowd we haven't seen in a while at the track.  No doubt, a good many of them will be returning after seeing the action last night.

The warm temperatures of the day ended up being followed by a more than brisk westerly wind that buffeted the crowd.  It also brought about a dip in temps, and those of us with a sweatshirt, were glad to have drug them along!  We had nothing to complain about though, as our part of the state was avoiding the many tornadoes that reared their ugly heads in the northern part of the state last night.

June is a busy month for racing in our area.  Week night specials are in abundance with many options to chose from.  One of the dates on our list is next Thursday night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson for the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds. Ken Schrader will be attendance as an added bonus.  Also on the program are the 360 Sprint Invaders along with the IMCA Northern SportMods and the IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.  Find a race to enjoy somewhere in your neck of the woods.  Happy Racing!

Duffy does it in the HDT, and Harris rolls along in the Deery Brothers Series

It was only our second time ever visit to the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa on Tuesday night.  We immediately recalled two unique aspects of the track.  The track appears to be UP hill from the bottom of the grandstands and you face west.  Two traveling series only were on the docket for the night---the IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour for Modifieds, and the Deery Brothers Summer Series for the Late Models.

Forty-four of the IMCA Modifieds checked into the pits and they ran five heats with only the top two advancing to the main.  They ran three B mains, taking four each directly to the feature, and added two provisionals to tag on to the tail.

It was announced earlier that the HDT feature would be 35 laps, but the announcer then said it would be 30 laps during the running.  Polesitter Mitch Morris quickly jumped to the lead with the guy starting right behind him, Jesup, Iowa's Ronn Lauritzen, falling into second.  But who was that flying on the topside?  It was the 19D of Darin Duffy taking flight from starting in row three.  Duffy took over the lead with a handful of laps in the books and would never relinquish that top position. Only one yellow flag would stop the action, that coming at lap sixteen.  At lap twenty, there were two guys who had come from a B main making themselves known. Richie Gustin, had started in twentieth place and was now in third, and fifteenth place starter, the "Hartford Hustler", Jacob Murray was running fourth.  When the checkers flew, it was Duffy taking the win, Ronn Lauritzen ran his steady as ever race around the bottom of the track, taking the runner up spot.  Richie Gustin and Jacob Murray held on to third and fourth, and finishing in the fifth spot was Ryan Dolan.  Veteran racer Dan Chapman, "The Flying Embalmer" came from starting twelfth and winning his B, to finish in sixth, and another driver coming from a B and starting twenty-first, was Kellogg's Kyle Brown in seventh. That made it four out of the top seven, coming out of a B main qualifier. The track was smooth and slick but there was plenty of passing.

After the always entertaining intermission  "draw your pizza slices", for starting position in the Deery Brothers 50-lapper, it was Justin Kay with the lone slice in his pizza box.  This was after a bit of back and forth passing, etc. of box after box.  The #2 draw went to Stephen Kammerer.  Kammerer was looking strong in the opening laps of the race, putting his car to the topside.  That dangerous topside would be his undoing at lap eleven, when he slipped off of turn one, bringing out the race's only yellow, and sending him to begin again at the tail.  The restart was begun double wide (since the leader had dropped out) with Kay at the point and Denny Eckrich along side.  Kay and Eckrich battled back and forth for the lead for numerous laps...until the familiar 15R of Brian Harris came into the picture.  Then it was the three of them going at it, giving the crowd their money's worth!  Harris finally established the lead at lap twenty-six, but the fight was far from over. With the race continuing under green, would lap traffic come into play? Not for Harris on this night, as he motored home to the win....his third Deery Series race in a row, and padding his points lead.  Kay barely took second over Andy Eckrich and nipping out brother Denny Eckrich at the line to go third and fourth. It was a tight one at the checkers.  Fifth went to the wily veteran Ray Guss, Jr.

So ended another night of fun racing for us.  We thoroughly enjoyed our grandstand "bunch" and as we've always said, it can be so much more enjoyable when you get to share it with racing family. There were four of us Positively Racing folk sitting in a row at the top of the wooden bleachers...and though we all watched the same race, from the same vantage point, do make sure you check out Jeff Broeg's "Back Stretch" and Ryan Clark's "In Staging" blogs at www.positivelyracing.com as well.  We can all see it differently you know.
We enjoyed getting to join the "Lauritzen throng" as well.  It was kept lively in our area all night long with the jibs, jabs, etc. flying all over the place.  Fun times.

We watched lightning all of our 100 mile drive home last night, thankful it stayed far to the north and west.
Summer had finally hit yesterday, making our night of racing the warmest by far of any this season.  Now as I write this blog, I am hearing of possible storm threats AGAIN, something we can all do without!  We will be heading south tonight, for our weekly visit to the Southern Iowa Speedway.  Tonight, grandstand admission is FREE.  Yes. FREE.  It is Fan Appreciation Night at Osky, so the stands should be packed with race fans far and wide.  Happy racing!

Carter and Petersen take thrillers, Schmidt dominate in Stock Cars

A good crowd was on hand at the Marshalltown Speedway Friday night, and a good car count as well...125 by my count.  The Dirt Trucks were also in town due to the World Pork Expo going on at the State Fair grounds in Des Moines, and a few cars in the other classes that normally run there on Friday nights, came to play at the Highbanks of Marshalltown.  A couple of thrilling finishes had the crowd on it's feet and two first time winners for 2013 took home trophies last night.

There were six IMCA Sport Compacts on hand last night, but it was still the same outcome that it has been the last three weeks prior....Merv Chandler took the checkers. Chandler passed Dave Moorman on lap two, never to look back.  Moorman continued to challenge Chandler but to no avail, coming home in second.  Third place was John Gill, fourth went to Toby Denning, fifth to Jeremy Lerch and Jim Alday was sixth.

The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks came next with eleven trucks strong.  The red flag came out on lap two when Tony Moro rolled hard in turn two.  He was okay.  Bret Moyer continued his lead on the restart and held on to that top spot the full fifteen laps, taking the checkers.  Brad Moyer finished second, Pat Fagen nosed out Carl Moyer as they went three and four, and Rick Clark rounded out the top five.

Mike Kennedy led the opening laps of the MADCRA Mod Lite feature, but by lap eight, Josh May came calling, grabbing the lead and sailing home to the win...his fourth in a row at Marshalltown.  Following May up from their fifth row starting spots was Andy Hennigar in second.  Third went to Eric Hendrickson, Charlie Brown was fourth and Randy Bryan, fifth.

I don't know what's been up the last couple of weeks with the IMCA Northern SportMods and their features, but it was beginning to look as if it was going to be another of the marathons we've been seeing.  The first stoppage of the racing action came at lap two when Johnathan Logue and Mike Stark got together coming out of turn four, their cars ending up on the track just before the flagstand.  Since there was a lot of fuel leaked in the incident, the track crew had to "light the match" and a huge blaze burned the fuel away before racing could resume. Three more cautions flew before the cars got up to racing speed but thankfully, that was the end of the yellow rag appearing.  Clint Luellen held the lead by lap six but it was Austin Kaplan coming at a hard charge from his fifteenth starting spot and soon in the runner up position.  Kaplan grabbed the lead on lap eleven and now Luellen was fighting off Travis Petersen as they ran second and third.  Peterson slipped by for second and the chase was on to catch the leader.  Kaplan held the advantage with a lap to go, but a slight slip up the track was all Peterson needed.  Peterson sneaked by and took the win, beating Kaplan to the checkers.  Luellen finished third, fourth went to Jared VanDeest and Ty Luellen finished in fifth.  This was Peterson's second win at the track this year.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature went to veteran racer Bill Bonnett.  Bonnett, who started in row five, took the lead from Mitchell Thomas at lap five and never looked back after that, winning by a comfortable distance over second place Nick Murty who came from row six.  Third was Austin Luellen, fourth went to Garrett Eilander who was driving a new hot rod, and fifth was Eric Stanton. Bonnett took the checkers for the first time this season.

The front row of the 18-lap IMCA Stock Car feature was held by Justin Temeyer (sporting a new car with the #8675309...made famous from a 1980's tune) but being scored as his familiar 56T no doubt, and Eric Brown.  Temeyer held the opening laps as the leader, but by lap three, it was "Napa Jay" Schmidt putting his new car to the point, after its debut a week ago.  Schmidt set sail on the topside as he extended his lead and flew home to the win.  Steve Meyer battled by Derek Reimer as they went second and third.  Fourth was Damon Murty from his twelfth starting spot, and Tracy Gienger was fifth.

It was an exciting finish in the IMCA Modified feature.  Cayden Carter jumped to the lead immediately in the 20-lap affair, Ronn Lauritzen getting to second and up for the chase.  Carter chose the topside of the track, Lauritzen his preferred low side.  Those two would put on quite the show for several laps but joining in the fun soon were Jon Snyder and Jimmy Gustin.  Those four cars were locked into a tight battle for positions, bringing the crowd to it's feet!  Snyder snatched the lead as the other cars got shuffled around...Carter dropping briefly to fourth.  A yellow came out at lap fifteen when Jimmy Gustin found himself in spin mode, and at that point, Carter had fought his way back into the lead, Snyder running second and Lauritzen in third.  The final few laps were thrilling to watch, Snyder grabbing the lead back at lap seventeen, but the 18-year old Carter wasn't done yet!  Carter took flight back on the topside and swung around Snyder and as the checkers flew, had a comfortable distance between himself and his competition.  Snyder held on to second, third went to Luke Wanninger, fourth was Richie Gustin who made late race strides, and Ronn Lauritzen fought hard to keep fifth place.

Here's hoping Mother Nature is DONE with her antics for a good long while and race fans can enjoy their racing fix without her ire.  Get out and find a race to attend and support our love of dirt track racing.  Happy racing!

Harris rolls in Deery win, Ruter takes HDT victory

Thursday night, the Hamilton County Speedway got their Deery Brothers and Hawkeye Dirt Tour race in the books, after having to postpone the show from Tuesday night due to good ole Mother Nature.  Also on the race ticket were the SportMods and the Hobby Stocks.

The SportMods ran their feature first.  After three yellow flags in the first three laps, the drivers finally found their racing rhythm with the race continuing the rest of the distance caution free. The majority of the race was a three car breakaway with Doug Smith leading Matt Lettow and Carter VandenBerg.  In the waning moments, Lettow did his darnedest to get around Smith, but fell short, taking the runner up spot to winner Smith.  VandenBerg held on to third and Nick Roberts and Aaron Benson finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The 10-car field of Hobby Stocks ran next---this one clicking off flag to flag.  Ty Griffith led the troops in the opening laps, with Randy Embrey and Devin Smith tailing him.  Smith took over the helm by lap five and from then on, it was clear sailing to the checkers.  Randy Embrey made the move around Griffith as they went second and third.  Fourth went to Cory Roe and driving the #2013 car often piloted by Adam Bonnett, was uncle Bill Bonnett in fifth place.

The HDT Modifieds came up next for their 25-lap event.  This was a $1,000 pay day for the winner as well as a qualifier to be on the Fast Shafts All-Star ballot for the IMCA Super Nationals.  Richie Gustin was looking strong in the early laps, leading Scott Olson and Ryan Ruter.  A yellow flag at lap nine was what Ruter was hoping for as he had made his way into second, got the jump on the restart and soon took over the lead.  Lap traffic with a handful of laps remaining could have made things interesting in many cases, but it was no bother to leader Ruter as he maneuvered easily through traffic and made it to the checkers first.  Gustin came home in second, Olson held on to third and Mark Elliott and Jon Snyder finished fourth and fifth.

The finale was the "big boys", the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series 40-lap event.  A nice field of 25 cars were on hand, and all but veteran racer Craig Jacobs were able to making the starting call.  Earlier, an entertaining game of "pass the pizza" for the top 12 qualifiers was done on the stage.  How many pieces of pizza in the box, would determine their starting spots in the feature.  After all of the passing back and forth among the drivers who were trying to determine just how heavy their box seemed to them, it was 16 year old
Spencer Diercks opened his box to discover just one slice of pizza...giving him the pole starting spot.  Diercks, who hails from Davenport, Iowa has already proved himself a worthy competitor as we've seen him take the checkers twice this season at the Southern Iowa Speedway.  Diercks showed his stuff as he jumped to the lead at the drop of the green, chased by veteran Jeff Aikey.  Diercks continued his control of the lead through lap fifteen.  That would be when turns one and two rose up and bit him.  He had been working turns three and four easily, but one and two had worked his line dangerously close to the wall.  That lap fifteen would be his undoing when his car slapped the wall, bringing out a caution and ending his run. This handed the lead over to Jeff Aikey on the restart, but right beside him was series point leader Brian Harris.  Harris, who had found eleven pieces of pizza in his pizza box, had worked his way toward the front, and ready to challenge for the lead.  Harris stuck it in low a lap or two later, took the lead and began his quest for the win.
Ray Guss, Jr. found himself up to second at lap 33 and was on the hunt for catching the leader.  It wasn't to be on this night however, as Harris took the win, extending his series point lead, Guss having to settle for second.  Denny Eckrich took third over brother Andy Eckrich in fourth and Aikey fell back to finish in fifth.

It was a good night of racing at the historic 1/2 mile in Webster City.  The track was heavy, but as the evening progressed, proved to be a multi-grooved and smooth surface.  Thanks to promoter Mike VanGenderen for moving the show right along too.  It was nice to enjoy the evening with several racing friends at a facility that we do not visit on a regular basis, though have in years past.  The show was also deemed the second annual Wayne Redmond Rumble Memorial, in honor of a guy who no doubt was smiling down and enjoying the racing as he had done so many times at the track.

A busy racing time continues in the state of Iowa and surrounding area.  Check out the racing schedule at Positively Racing's calendar of events for a race to put on your schedule.  Happy racing!

Gustin and Schmidt snatch late race victories

On our journey to the Boone Speedway on Saturday, there were those ominous grey clouds again.  It seems Mother Nature is just doing anything she can to aggravate everyone here in the state of Iowa.....hopefully it is  her last gasp.  We had a rain shower at the track but the track had been sealed and when the pesky shower passed, out came the trusty tractors and farm equipment and the track was ready for racing right on schedule.

There were some thrilling finishes last night in the Modified and Stock Car classes,  and for the first time in a long time, we had a shortened race due to the time limit. A couple of first time winners for the year emerged and one driver showed his usual style, winning in thrilling form.

The MADCRA Mod Lites started off the night's A main action, and before the field reached the starter's stand, there were two cars up against the outside wall.  Joel Huggins was upside down, but was okay.  The other car involved was Joe Glick. I thought I understood announcer Jerry VanSickle to say that he too had taken a tumble.  From our vantage point, we could not confirm that, however. This incident put both drivers out before even reaching the green.  When racing got under way, Jason Whitehead led the pack, but it was Charlie Brown taking over at lap three.  Brown then led the rest of the way to the checkers, securing his first win at the track this season.  Bryan Zehm came from starting eleventh, to take the runner up spot.  Third went to Randy Bryan who started in row five, Josh May was fourth and  Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Northern SportMods were next and this one could only go a lap or two at the most when another yellow flag came out.  The regularly scheduled 18-lap race ended up being called under the time limit with only ten laps in.  Randy Roberts led all but the opening lap, taking his second win of 2013.  Lynn Brockett finished as the runner up, ahead of Cory Rose in third, fourth was Darren Huntley, and Tara Longnecker came from starting eleventh, to finish in fifth. This was the second night in a row that a time limit has been needed in this class, as it happened at Marshalltown Speedway the previous night.

The 20-lap Modified feature was a doozie! It was fun to see the father/son duo of David and Kyle Brown going at it for the lead in the first ten laps.  They swapped leads several times, and then at lap eleven, out comes a yellow.  At that point, David Brown led son Kyle, but who should be lurking in third.....with a gleam in his eye and glad for the caution...would be Jammin' Jimmy Gustin.  Gustin, who had started in thirteenth spot, had been putting on the show in his usual form, flying on the topside.  Kyle Brown got the advantage at the restart, and took the lead, Gustin quickly taking over second. The #5 of Todd Shute had also made his presence known, coming from his seventh row starting position, and taking third, and lurking in fourth was Jon Snyder.  Brown continued to fend off Gustin's advances, but with two laps to go, he made the pass for the lead, thrilling the crowd, and sealing the victory.  Todd Shute and Jon Snyder finished in second and third, Brown fell to fourth and Shay Woods completed the top five.  We noted when Brown left the tech area, his right rear tire was nearly flat.  Gustin took his first regular season win this year, having won the Frostbuster back on April 6.

The exciting action continued in the 18-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. Veteran racer Robert Stofer took the helm of this one at lap one.  Mike Goldsberry and Jay Schmidt were duking it out for the runner up spot through lap thirteen, as Stofer continued his lead.  Schmidt made the pass into second at lap fourteen and then the chase was on the rest of the way to the checkers.  As the cars passed the white flag, Stofer still held the advantage, but Schmidt put on the move and coming out of turn three, snatched the lead and scored the victory as the checkers flew.  Stofer had to settle for second, Goldsberry held on for third, and Bob Daniels and Aaron Parmer finished fourth and fifth.  Schmidt, who had just debuted his new hot rod the night before at Marshalltown, saw victory lane for the first time at Boone in 2013.

As always, the night ended with the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature.  Andrew Burg led the troops from the get go and was looking to be on his way to the win as the laps wound down.  Eric Stanton had dogged the leader from the halfway mark and had been inching closer and closer.  With two laps to go, the two cars passed the flagstand nearly neck and neck.  Stanton was able to gain the advantage and held the lead as the white flag flew and would go home to the flying checkers.  Burg chased him across the line to take second, third went to Tyler Pickett, fourth was Aaron Rudolph and Garrett Eilander came from thirteenth starting spot, to take fifth.

There's a lot of racing in our area coming up.  Check out the Positively Racing calendar for some specials as well as weekly racing in our neck of the woods.  This Tuesday night at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, the Deery Brothers Summer Series and the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modfieds comes to town.  Also on the docket will be the SportMods, and Hobby Stocks.  Hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.
Happy racing!

Pruitt doubles up in hobby stocks, Murty wins unbelievable stock car feature

There was a LOT of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway last night as it was double features in four classes due to the rain out last week. Those classes, the SportMods, Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars and Modifieds clicked off those make up features in good time when they all went caution free.  However, the regular night's features would be an entirely different story!

The SportMod feature from last week was run first and picked up where it left off, at five laps down.  Brandon Brinton got back to business at the drop of the green, resuming his lead as Ben Kates pressured him while running in second.  Andy Tiernen got to third with a handful of laps remaining and then those three front runners went at it.   When the white flag flew, Brinton was scored as the leader but that was all she wrote as Tiernen surged ahead in the run to the checkers, snatching the win.  Brinton took what had to be a disappointing runner up spot, over Kates in third, Jayme Duinink in fourth and Jenae Gustin was fifth.

Eric Knutson took the lead in the make up IMCA Stock Car feature by lap four, but Michael Murphy had made great strides from starting in row five, to get to the second spot.  Just a few laps later, Murphy nabbed the lead, and pulled away, scoring the win.  Knuston had to fend off a hard charging Tracy Gienger at the finish as they went second and third.  Fourth place was Steve Meyer and veteran Jeff Wollam rounded out the top five.

Brandon Pruitt over took leader Brice Udelhoven with five laps down in the make up Hobby Stock feature and that would be the way it would finish.  Following Pruitt and Udelhoven was Bill Bonnett in third, fourth was Eric Stanton and Austin Luellen was fifth.

Wow!  We are moving right along with the make up features and with no yellows!  Would it continue for the final feature, the IMCA Modifieds?  The first six laps had David Brown and Ronn Lauritzen putting on a great show up front for the fans as they circled the track neck and neck.  Lauritzen made the pass at lap seven for the lead and gave himself some breathing room.  Eyes were now on the 69X of Jon Snyder who had started back in tenth, had put himself  "up top" in his familiar position, and was coming fast!  Snyder overtook Brown for second as the final laps wound down but was unable to gain any more.  Lauritzen got his first win at Marshalltown this year, Snyder took second, Brown, third.  Zach Rawlins and Luke Wanninger finished fourth and fifth. And yes, the modifieds ended the make up features with a caution free 20-lap feature!  In his victory lane interview, winner Lauritzen thanked his sponsors and then deemed the track "perfect".

Now it was on to the regular night of racing and after all the heats and one B in the SportMod class was completed, it was time for more feature events.  The Sport Compacts kicked it off.  In this one, John Gill held the lead over Merv Chandler for the first three laps, but then Chandler took the reins and motored home to another feature win. Gill took second over Chad Larson and Josh Keller.

The Mod Lite's came up next.  Josh May took command of this one at lap eight after his pass on Eric Hendrickson, pulled away from the pack and scored the victory, his third of the year at Marshalltown.Second place was Mike Morrill who started deep in the field, third went to Andy Hennigar who came from near the back of the starting grid, fourth was Eric Hendrickson and Randy Bryan completed the top five.

Things were still looking good with only a total of two yellow flags in the regular nights features.  Should have known, as the IMCA SportMod feature was a yellow flag fest!!   Among those situations were a car getting shoved into the wall and then a rear end coming out, another car shoved into the wall plus numerous spin outs, but when the threat of a time limit was tossed at the field remaining, the race did finish under green.

Eric Elliott took the helm of the SportMod feature at lap five and held off the contenders at the numerous restarts, earning his first win at the Speedway this year.  Clint Luellen won the war for second as he had to go tooth and nail earlier against Ben Kates who was third, and Jenae Gustin in fourth.  Brett Lowry took fifth place.

After the marathon SportMod feature, it was the Hobby Stocks rolling out for their second feature of the night.  This one turned out to be a show between veteran Bill Bonnett and Brandon Pruitt.  Bonnett preferred the outside line, Pruitt the inside, and at lap eight, Pruitt gained the advantage.  Pruitt then motored home to his second win of the evening.  Bonnett finished in second, Donovan Nunnikhoven hung around the front of the pack all evening and finished third, as did Chris Luloff in fourth and Garrett Eilander completed the top five.

The IMCA Stock Cars ran their 18-lap feature next.  This was a show up front between Sean Johnson and Jay Schmidt, who was sporting his new snazzy race car.  The two went at it with Johnson holding the advantage. Then enter those ugly yellow flags again!   Racing was halted for numerous incidents.  Dusty Vis ended up against the outside wall coming out of turn four....minus his rear end.  Just a few laps later, Michael Murphy who had won the make up feature earlier, found his car with the same situation!  How often does that happen in the same race?!  When racing did get back to business with more than just a couple of continuous laps, it was still Johnson and Schmidt up front.  Schmidt gained advantage on the back stretch at lap fourteen, but Johnson slid in front of Schmidt coming out of turn four, contact was made and both cars dropped back in positions.  So....now who should come into the picture but Damon Murty, the guy who had been to the pits once to change a tire and tag the field, and then once more having to tag the field after stopping to avoid the Dusty Vis incident with no place to go between Vis and the rear end on the track! Murty had flown through the field....more than once...and then running close to the front, saw his chance when the two front runners had made contact, snapped up the lead and snatched the win!  What a thrilling race to watch!  This was Murty's third win at the track this year...adding just another to his many wins at various tracks this year.

Finally....finale time and the IMCA Modified feature.  Richie Gustin had his eyes set on the checkered flag early on.  He led by lap four and extended his lead from the competition, even after several restarts brought about from those nasty yellow flags.  Luke Wanninger ran in second much of the race, but once again, it was Jon Snyder taking flight on the topside after starting in twelfth spot.  Snyder took over second but there was no stopping leader Gustin, as he took the win by a comfortable margin.  Snyder took the runner up spot, Wanninger finished third with Jimmy Gustin snapping at his heels in fourth at the flag and Adam Larson was fifth.

It was right at 11:20 p.m. when racing was completed last night, but the fans sure got plenty of racing for the price of their ticket!  It's a wonder there was racing anywhere in the state after the absolute deluge that we had!  Here in Grinnell, we had 7.28 inches early Sunday morning...that was pretty accurate as we have an automatic rain gauge, and through out the next several days of more unrelenting rain, we ended up with right at 11.5 inches!  We were one of the lucky ones, as the town had many basements full of water, many with backed up sewers, but we stayed dry!  We feel for all of those who are dealing with those situations through the state.

Check out the calendar at Positively Racing for a race you may want to catch.  Don't forget the Deery Brothers Summer Series and the Hawkeye Dirt Tour this coming Tuesday, June 4 at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City.  Should be a great show. Now begins a busy "specials" time for racing in our area as well as all of the weekly racing programs. Get out and support and enjoy this great sport of dirt track racing we all love.  Happy racing!
