Racing finally resumes at Marshalltown

After Mother Nature had caused the past two weeks of scheduled racing at Marshalltown to be cancelled, more pleasant weather prevailed this past Friday night. The sky to the west was a bit dark, but on this evening, it did not put a damper on the racing program. The added event for the evening would see the IMCA Northern SportMod's run a King of the Hill after the regular racing was completed.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was first on the docket and it would find undefeated Mike Morrill once again attempting to maintain that crown. Jumping to the early lead was Johnny Mordock, but Tim Hennigar would quickly make his way up into the second spot. Tim Hennigar would take over the number one position as the laps wound down and newcomer for the night, Troy Hudson would pass Mordock for runner-up spot. With Hennigar eyeing the checkered flag, the action would come to a halt as a yellow flag flew. It would be a green, white, checkered finish and the #5 of Hudson would make that winning pass in the last few feet to the checkers. Hudson was the winner, Tim Hennigar had to settle for second, Mordock in third, and the undefeated season of Mike Morrill came to an end as he finished fourth. Rounding out the top five was Andy Hennigar. Hudson took home an extra $100 as the "bounty" had been increasing the last few weeks.

After the SportMod's had to run a B feature to get their starting line-up whittled down to 24 cars, it would find the 20G car of Michael Grantham jump to the lead. Grantham, in his Iowa National Guard Red Bull Division car, would keep his lead for much of the race. In the meantime, fifteenth starter Kevin Sather would be making his way through the pack to take over second position. Also moving up impressively was Paul Nagle who had followed Sather through the field from having started 16th. Both Sather and Nagle would get around Grantham to finish one-two. Grantham took third, Kyle Brown who also ran a strong race, took fourth, and Joel Bushore came from well back in the pack also, to round out the top five.

Next up was the "Class too Tough to Tame", the IMCA Stock Cars. As the race began, it would be the "Flyin Farmer" Rick Brown putting his Ford Thunderbird out in front. He led easily until lap eight and as a caution flew, his wheel snapped off and he came to a rough halt as he ran over the wheel. His night was done. At the restart, familiar car #85, Dustin Smith, found himself inheriting the lead. He had started in 16th place and had been making his way through the field with ease. He would go home to victory once again, with Tracy Gienger taking second with a good run, Jeff Wollam in third from starting well back in the field, Michael Jaennette was fourth and Trent Murphy was fifth. A claim would see #6 Donnie Bown claiming Gienger and they would exchange.

Fifteen of the seventeen IMCA modifieds on hand, would start their feature. Brett Ladehoff and Jay Schmidt would be unable to start. Ladehoff had won his heat race, but unfortunately as he crossed the finish line, his car "gave up the ghost". Schmidt had been caught up in a multi-car pile-up in that same heat, and was finished for the night. As the race began, Tim Murty would put his car out front as Scott Simotovich in a former Jimmy Gustin car, would be chasing him. Veteran John Logue who was on hand for the night, would later take over second spot from Simotovich and then Jimmy Gustin would also slip by. Logue would eventually take over the top spot and go on to the win. Jimmy Gustin took second, Tim Murty was third, Simatovich fourth, and Jon Snyder came from the back of the field to take fifth.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA hobby stocks who also had to run a B main to get their starting line-up cut to 24 cars. Pole-sitter Adam Rickett, who had won his heat race, led the race early. His night would end with what I believe was a flat tire and Grinnell's Todd Reitzler would take over the top spot. Reitzler's night would also end with a flat with three laps remaining. At the finish line, it would be the 12K of Eric Knutson taking the victory, Nic Shearer followed in second, Terry Shaffar in third, Devin Smith in fourth and Eric Larson in fifth. A claim was made in this divison as well as the 99J of Adam Gebel claimed the 43 of Shearer.

A SportMod King of the Hill competition ended the night's activities. In round one, Jamie Schirm beat Adam Shelman, Paul Nagle beat Michael Grantham, Kyle Brown beat Geoff Olson and Joel Rust would get a bye. Round two saw Nagle defeat Schirm and Brown defeat Rust. The final round would see Nagle out distance Brown to take the King of the Hill crown.

Don't forget the upcoming IMCA American Stock Car Shoot Out event to be held at the Marshalltown Speedway this coming Thursday night, July 2nd in conjunction with the three-event Stock Car Series. They will run at the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta on Tuesday night, June 30, and Independence Motor Speedway in Independence on Wednesday, July 1. Independence will also be hosting the Deery Brothers Late Model event that same night. Should be an exiting series event for the IMCA stock cars. Regular racing will resume at Marshalltown on Friday night, July 3rd.

Happy racing!
