It was a pleasant night for racing at the Boone Speedway this past Saturday evening, though it was a bit more like football weather, than mid-July racing weather. There was a first time winner this season at the speedway, an exciting modified feature that saw the fans on their feet and the kids enjoyed rides with the hobby stockers.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite's took to the track for their feature first after the usual farming session.
Joel Huggins sat on the pole along side Duane Coffman for the start of the race. I'm sure Huggins was hungry for another win as he had won the previous night at the Marshalltown Speedway.
Tonight however, it was the familiar orange #5 of Troy Hudson making his way to the point position very early in the race and from there on, he never looked back. He would go home for the win for the second week in a row and Huggins would have to settle for runner-up. Third across the line was Dusty Masolini, fourth was Josh May, and rounding out the top five was Ed Zehm
Twenty-six of the twenty-nine IMCA Northern SportMods started their feature. Tonight, there was no B Main. Whitney Huntley would lead the race early then slipped back to third as Brian Miller and Geoff Olson both got by her. With nine laps down, Huntley would spin, bringing out a yellow flag. The remaining nine laps saw Miller keep his number one position and take the checkers--his first of the year at the Boone Speedway. Coming from starting twelfth to take the runner-up spot was local driver Scott Davis, and with a fine run for third, was Geoff Olson. Fourth went to Matthew Meinecke and fifth to Jeremy Embrey, who had make his way back through the pack after being involved in an incident on the track early on.
The modified feature had to be the most exciting race of the night--maybe of the season--and one that would have the fans on their feet at the end. All nineteen of the cars on hand for the night would start the feature with John Logue on the tail end. He had not finished his heat race due to mechanical problems, which relegated him to tag the field. Nate Caruth and J. J. Scott started on the front row and it would be Scott jumping to the point with Caruth in pursuit for seventeen of the twenty laps. Meanwhile, it was Boone's John Logue who was coming through the pack and picking off cars at a regular clip. When a yellow flew with just three laps to go, Logue would be in the fourth spot right behind Scott Baker as J. J. Scott still led and Caruth was in second. Logue already had the crowd excited and no doubt, many knew that he was going to be giving it his best shot at taking the win during those last few circuits to come. The fans got their money's worth tonight, as Logue "did his thing" one more time, and made his way around the three cars to take the double checkers. It was Caruth taking second place, J. J. Scott settling for third, Scott Baker in fourth, and veteran driver from Jamaica, Iowa, Denny Pittman in fifth. As a driver, you've got to love or hate those yellow flags, and I'm sure tonight was one that John Logue loved to see flying.
The Class too Tough to Tame, the IMCA Stock Cars, had a full field of twenty-four cars signed in. Only one car, the #7 of Dustin Graham, would not make the starting call. Wayne Gifford made his way from starting sixth, to lead the race with only four laps down. With nine laps down, Gifford still led the race, but the 35 of Donavon Smith was up to second from his ninth starting spot. After a few more laps, Smith would get slower and fall back several spots, as Robert Stofer took over second position with Chris Webb in third and Trent Murphy in fourth. That would be the way they would finish at the line. Veteran driver Larry Portis from Nora Springs took fifth in his first appearance at the track this year. There was a claim in the class as the 14J of Michael Johnston claimed the 25 of Trent Murphy and they would swap motors.
The final feature was the IMCA hobby stocks. They would run one feature as they had the field cut to twenty-four through a B Main. Dylan Book took the consy win. The 83S of Scott Lograsso got to the front from starting eighth and he would keep that spot to take home the win. Coming from eleventh to take second, was Devin Smith, third went to Jason Purvis, fourth to Matt Drottz, and fifth to Pat Mather. The cars would still be running three wide at the end of the night which is always fun for the fans to see.
Next week at the Boone Speedway will be a money toss for the kids. Also new for drivers and fans, is a text alert which you can sign up for on your cell phone. It will let you know of any pertinent information like rain outs, etc. Check out www.raceboone for the full information.
Still lots of racing to be had in the state of Iowa. Get out and attend one in your area. Happy racing!
