It was a full house for the Marshalltown Speedway's Deery Brothers race this past Tuesday night. Beautiful weather greeted fans and drivers as the late models came to town for what has become a much anticipated event at the speedway in recent years.
Support classes for the late model headliners were the Dwarf/Mod Lites, Dirt Trucks, and IMCA Sportmods. The Dwarfs were the first to run their feature. Joel Huggins took command right from the start as he led the pack from his pole position and maintained it for the entire race. Josh May chased Huggins to the finish, coming home in second. Third went to Tim Hennigar, fourth to Mike Morrill and fifth to Jimmy May.
The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks made their first appearance of the year. Pat Fagen took the win with Bryan Nevins, Jr. taking the runner up spot. We recall watching Bryan Nevins, Sr. racing around the dirt tracks in our area for many years, so yet another family tradition continues. Third place went to Ed Nelson, fourth to Bret Moyer and fifth to Lou Sipolt, KGGO radio personality.
Twenty-nine IMCA Northern SportMods were on hand. Their feature event seemed plagued by incidents causing the yellow to fly. Talented young driver, Brett Moffitt led all of the circuits to capture yet another of his numerous wins. Fourteen year old Cayden Carter in the #10 car challenged him a bit until on a restart around nine laps down, he spun in turn one. This would end his chances for a win. Zach Rawlins and Kyle Brown fought it out for second and third position with Rawlins getting the advantage and come home in the runner up spot, Brown having to settle for third. Fourth was Jesse Sobbing and fifth was Rod McDonald.
It's always a thrill to see the late models as they salute the fans on their parade lap around the quarter-mile of the Marshalltown Speedway. Forty laps awaited the anxious crowd as the 24 mighty machines approached the waving green flag. Early leader was pole sitter Greg Kastli -- Go Navy!--I have to say it every time I see him as it has become a staple on his car. A restart situation enabled the 77 car of Jeff Aikey to make his move around Kastli and put his car out front. All eyes were on the 7B of Mark Burgtorf as he motored his way into third when an unfortunate incident caused him to be sent to the tail of the long line at a yellow flag. As we understand it, even though his car spun on the track after the yellow flag was thrown for another car, he was still said to be stopped on the track, and the IMCA official called it as such and he was sent to the back. We must say, as racing resumed we were intrigued by the show that Burgtorf then put on as he seemed to be racing under pure adrenaline, and made his way up to third. Meanwhile, Aikey continued his lead as another veteran driver had settled in behind him that being the 58 of Ray Guss, Jr. Even though 40 laps is a long race, this was a time when you wish there had been just a few more laps to see if Burgtorf could have pulled off the win. It wasn't to be though, and Aikey once again took a Deery Brothers win. We do not see a lot of Deery Brothers races, but we must be a good luck charm to Aikey, as it seems he is the winner nearly every time we are in attendance. Guss was scored in second, Burgtorf got a well deserved third place finish, fourth went to Jay Johnson and fifth to Terry Neal.
The show was run in an effecient manner which was appreciated by us and no doubt the majority of those there. This is especially nice when the show is run on a week night. Thanks to Toby Kruse and his staff for putting on a great program once again at the Marshalltown Speedway. It will be regular weekly racing this coming Friday night, May 21st.
