Saturday brought warmer than expected temperatures with an anticipation of more comfortable viewing from the stands at the Boone Speedway. However, the wind just seems relentless and was blowing like a gale out of the west. When the sun went down, the temperature dropped and the fans began their bundling up. The racing was excellent with close racing in all classes. All five divisions brought new faces to the winner's circle for the 2011 season.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature clicked right off as they ran their feature flag-to-flag.
After James May got around leader Dusty Masolini, there was little doubt who the winner would be. James May took the win, pulling away from second place finisher Colby Oberembt. The winner's son, Josh May, finished in third, fourth went to Dusty Masolini and Joel Huggins placed fifth.
Thirty-four IMCA Northern SportMods brought it to the speedway and with that many, once again a B main was on tap. Tim Love won that consolation event. Daniel Tasler started outside the front row, found it to his liking, and took the lead at the drop of the green. Cody Hennings challenged Tasler on occasion, but for the most part, Tasler was comfortably in command. At the checkers, Tasler took the win--which to my recollection, may have been his first at Boone--Cody Hennings took the second spot, third went to Lynn Brockett, fourth to Scott Davis, who came from starting twelfth, and Eric Elliott rounded out the top five.
Nineteen IMCA modifieds came to Boone; all hoping for a win. The main would end under a yellow/checkered situation when a lapped car spun, bringing out the yellow after the white flag had flown. By that time however, Jammin Jimmy Gustin had things well in hand, as he skillfully ran the topside of the track after powering around Randy Havlik with four laps remaining. Gustin, no stranger to seeing the checkers first at Boone, having won numerous times in previous years, took his first win at the track in 2011. Randy Havlik took second place, followed by Jake Durbin in third, Happy Gilman in fourth, and Russ Dickerson in fifth.
The class deemed "too tough to tame", the IMCA stock cars, checked 29 cars through the gates. This too would call for a B main to qualify the final three cars to fill in the 24-car starting field for their feature. Jeff Harkrider from Carroll, won the B main. The first few circuits of the feature saw a mad scramble as cars ran three and four wide as they fought for positions behind leader Josh Brauckman. Brauckman kept his lead for the 18-laps as Micheal Jaennette's last ditch effort coming to the flag failed, leaving him with a second place finish. Third place went to veteran driver out of Jefferson, Robert Stofer, Larry Crocheck finished in fourth and fifth went to Trent Murphy.
Only one A main was run for the IMCA hobby stocks. Their B main event to fill in the final four cars for their feature, was won by Darin Rothfus. Cory Adams led the parade through lap eight, but would suffer with an unfortunate spin only to bring out the yellow and rendering him to the tail of the pack for the restart. This would then put Austin Luellen to the point position where he would remain to the checkers, as he pulled away from second place finisher Aaron Rudolph. Cory Tasler finished in the third position, fourth was Randy Embrey and fifth went to Eric Stanton.
The program was run right off as per usual at Boone, with a much earlier conclusion than previous weeks when the car counts were extremely large. I think most fans, as are we, are happy to be heading home before the bewitching hour!
Racing will continue at the Boone Speedway next Saturday night, May 7, with hot laps scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m. For more information pertaining o the track, check out www.raceboone.com. The full results of tonight's racing are posted below. Until next time, happy racing!
