The "Flying Dutchman" takes Boone modified win

It was back to the Boone Speedway on Saturday night for their mid-season championships. They were dumping lots and lots of water on the track when we arrived. We heard through the grapevine that Ogden, just nine miles to the west, had an inch of rain earlier in the day, however Boone escaped again.

The Mod-Lites saw a new face for the year in victory lane. Dusty Masolini went to the front early and stayed there. Jeff Stensland chased the elusive Masolini to no avail. Masolini took his first win at the track for 2011 with Stensland having to be content with a second place finish. Third went to Bryan Zehm, fourth was Randy Bryan and fifth was Joel Keenan. Point leader Josh May was caught up in an incident on the track that left him with a broken left front tie rod, but he was able to wrangle the car to complete the race and still retain a sizable point lead.

The SportMod 18-lap feature was an exciting, flag-to-flag, 3-wide affair as cars swapped positions back and forth. Ty Luellen had established the point position by the halfway mark but he was being reeled in by Brian Miller. Miller has had a win slip away from him this year, but tonight he was able to pass Luellen with a few laps remaining, and then pulled away. Miller took his first win at Boone this year. Second place went to Stacey Clark who was able to pass Luellen, who finished third, fourth was Doug Smith and Randy Roberts took fifth.

The 20-lap modified feature had only one yellow fly, that due to debris at lap five.
The debris came from an on-track skirmish that left Mike Molle's ride minus much sheetmetal. Mike VanGenderen, the "Flying Dutchman" put his 57V into the lead at lap six, riding the topside, with Jake Durbin closely in tow. That would be the way they would finish, as VanGenderen nabbed his second win of the season at Boone, and last week's winner, Durbin getting second. Jimmy Gustin made his usual great charge through the field to take the third spot, advancing from his twelfth starting spot. Fourth went to veteran Grimes, Iowa driver, Denny Rosenberg and Randy Havlik took fifth.

The stock cars were in their usual fine form giving fans a thrilling action-packed feature race. Rod Richards appeared on his way to a win as he lead a pack of five to six cars fighting it out behind him for position. But it was Alan VanGorp taking the low route around the track to overtake Richards with just a few laps remaining. VanGorp grabbed his second win of the season at the track and Jay Schmidt made the top side work and took the runner up spot as he powered around Richards at the flag.
Following Richards for fourth place was veteran Robert Stofer, and fifth went to Cory Bushnell.

The IMCA hobby stocks concluded the evening's features with their 12-lap A main.
John Watson pushed his car to the front early from starting back in row six. He would go home to the checkers first, taking his second regular season feature win. Watson had also won the Frostbuster back on April 2nd. Aaron Rudolph trailed Watson by a distance most of the race to take second. Third place went to Eric Stanton with a fine run after having to qualify through the b main. Stanton nearly trashed his car in a wild roll at the end of last week's hobby feature, so it was good to see him bounce back. Brandon Brinton, Nevada, Iowa, finished in fourth and Tim Hadley rounded out the top five.
