Sunday night, we ventured over to the Benton County Speedway for some racing action. They were having a $1,000 to win IMCA Modified feature, along with their regular classes. It was a little tune up for today's Hawkeye Dirt Tour for the Modifieds. There was a packed house on hand. No surprise, as the facility always seems to draw a great crowd at their regular Sunday shows, and it was nearly standing room only last night. Thirty-six Modifieds showed up for the "tune-up" show, and it was a stout field.
Nathan Ballard took home the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock A feature. Ballard fought by opening laps leader, Matt Brown, and took command at lap three of the 15-lap event. From there on, he remained as captain of the ship the rest way to the checkers. Seventh place starter, Justin Wacha finished a distant runner up. Third was tenth starter, Brian Happel, Brown finished in fourth, and Matt Pohlman rounded out the top five.
The Micro Mod feature went to veteran racer, Don Erger. Young Dallon Murty showed his poise, taking his ride through the field to capture second place. Scott Beaty, Matthew Dugan and Chad Dugan completed the top five.
There was a great field of 36 IMCA Modifieds on hand last evening, all with their eye on the $1,000 prize. The show, which was draw/redraw, brought the drivers in for today's first Hawkeye Dirt Tour of 2016. Heat winners were Jason Snyder, J. D. Auringer, Corey Dripps, and Kyle Brown. One B main had been completed---won by Tony Snyder, and the second B main was on the track when Mother Nature cut loose. We had been watching radar and knew that it was going to be close if the pesky little cell would miss...or hit, the track. Unfortunately, it HIT. The downpour didn't last long, but it was heavy when it did fall. Thank goodness for a covered grandstand, or we would have been soaked!!
The call was made to try and work the track in. The sheepsfoot was on the track, and then the big-tired water wagon, in hopes of making the track race-able. You could still see water standing on the track after many passes, and it was decided to cancel the rest of the night's show. With racing already scheduled for today, the decision was made to run the remaining B main for the Modifieds today, and then the feature, before the HDT show. I believe we understood that the Stock Car, and SportMod's would have double features at next Sunday's show.
We won't be returning for today's show at Vinton, but for anyone going, it should be a dandy---with a bonus of an extra Modified feature thrown in!! We are heading to the Boone Speedway today, for the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model annual Memorial Day show. The IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Northern SportMods and IMCA Hobby Stocks are also on the docket. Grandstands open at 3, hot laps at 4, and racing at 5.
Enjoy the rest of your Memorial Day weekend. Remember the true meaning of the holiday.

Logue scores at Boone
Saturday night's racing program at the Boone Speedway beat Mother Nature, its program finishing just before the rain. John Logue, who has seen many victories over the years, once again took the checkers in the IMCA Modified division. Wayne Gifford got his second win of the season in the IMCA Stock Car class, as did Randy Roberts in the IMCA Northern SportMods. John Watson got the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock class and it was Bryan Zehm getting win number three in the Mod Lite's.
The 15-lap Mod Lite feature kicked off the feature racing. Early leader was Angelo Montgomery, but his good luck ended at lap twelve. He found himself in a tangle with another car, and ended up rolling over in corner two. He was okay, but his night ended. When things resumed, Bryan Zehm was the recipient of the top spot, which he kept the rest of the way to the checkers. Joe Glick took the runner up position over visiting Missouri racer Ed Griggs in third. Fourth went to Cory Dennis and Joel Keenan was fifth. Zehm, who started eighth, captured his third feature of the year.
John Watson came away with his first feature of the season in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Watson came from ninth starting spot, to take the checkers first. Second place was awarded to Tyson Overton, who started sixth, and third place went to Brandon Pitts. Pitts, who had led the entire race until the final corner, was sent backwards due to contact with another car, and that driver was penalized for that contact.....scored last. Fourth went to Seth Janssen, and thirteenth place starter, Dustin Graham, rounded out the top five. Thank goodness for transponders, when a race ends like that at the finish line.
It took a couple of restarts in the 18-lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature, before the race got under way. When it did, Randy Roberts wasted no time in getting to the front from his eleventh starting position. He took command of the ship at lap three and never looked back on his way to the win. Johnathan Logue made it all the way to second from starting twenty-third. Last week's winner Brandon Williams, took third after starting thirteenth. Fourth went to eleventh place starter Jake McBirnie, and Adam Shelman completed the top five. Roberts won for the second time in 2016.
The IMCA Modified 20-lap feature came next. John Logue jumped immediately to the lead from his outside front row starting spot. He took his ride to the topside and kept his momentum there, leading all laps to the finish and the win. Twelfth place starter, and current point leader, Mike VanGenderen, finished a close second. Right behind was Jimmy Gustin, who came from eleventh, to finish third. Fourth went to twentieth place starter, Ricky Thornton, Chandler, Arizona driver who calls Iowa his summer home, and Joel Bushore finished fifth. As a note, it sounds like this will be John Logue's final season competing behind the wheel.
The night's racing action ended with the 18-lap IMCA Stock Car feature, and they gave the fans their usual exciting finish. Wayne Gifford claimed the lead at lap four and was pulling away until pesky yellows reared their ugly heads. This bunched the field for the restarts and soon gave Gifford some hot competition. Tyler Pickett drew close to the rear of Gifford, and was eager for the restart when the final caution came out with just two laps remaining. Lurking in third was Jay Schimidt, who had a bumper cover flying in the wind, and also close at hand was last week's winner, Donavon Smith. Gifford managed to hang on the final two laps for the win, just beating out Jay Schmidt in second. Tyler Picket took third over Matthew West in fourth and fourteenth place starter, Trent Murphy, finished in fifth.
Gifford put it in victory lane for the second time this year.
The sky was dark most of the evening, but the clouds grew much darker just as the features began. It was just a few sprinkles when the final feature, the Stock Cars took to the track. But by the time the race was completed and we headed to the car, it became much heavier, and it would have halted the racing action. Ironically, just a few miles from the track, the pavement was dry.

Next up at the Speedway is the annual Memorial Day IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model show on Monday, May 30. Grandstands will open at 3pm, hot laps are 4pm and racing is 5pm. Also on the docket are the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Northern SportMods, and IMCA Hobby Stocks, running for all applicable points.
Regular Saturday night racing then returns on June 2, with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.

Elliott eludes raindrops for Mod win, Stanton unstoppable in Hobby Stocks
Raindrops at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night, didn't stop the weekly racing action. Eric Elliott went home with his first ever Modified win at the track, Donavon Smith in the Stock Car class won for the first time in the regular season, and Jared VanDeest got win number three in the IMCA Northern SportMod division. There has been no stopping Eric Stanton in the Hobby Stock class, as he continued his perfect season's run, winning for the fifth time. Mike Morrill also won for the first time this year in the Mod Lite class.
The Mod Lite feature did not start well as new driver Joe Luethje rolled hard off of turn one. He was transported as a precaution, but was alert and talking.
When racing got underway, it was Joel Huggins showing the way, but as lap two was scored, it was the 6 of Mike Morrill taking command. From there on, Morrill never relinquished the lead on his way to the checkers. Travis Stensland took the runner up position, third went to Randy Bryan, fourth was Joel Huggins, and Joe Glick rounded out the top five.
Jared VanDeest returned to victory lane, winning the 15-lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature. VanDeest started seventh and had to run down early leaders Travis Peterson and then Cory Rose by running his preferred top side of the track. The three drivers battled it out, with VanDeest finally taking the lead at lap thirteen and holding it to the finish for the win. Travis Peterson finished second, and Johnathan Logue came from tenth starting spot, to finish third. Fourth went to visiting Carter VandenBerg, who started twelfth and Jake McBirnie came from sixteenth starting spot, to finish fifth.
This was VanDeest's third win of the season.
Eric Stanton kept his perfect streak alive in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. Stanton started ninth and had the lead at lap five, keeping it to the finish for the win. He was tailed most of the distance by Jamie Songer, who finished as the runner up. Ironically, Stanton has been piloting a borrowed car from runner up Songer, since destroying his early in the season. Gary Pfantz was third, fourth went to Webster City's Doug McCollough, who had started tenth, and lady racer, Leah Wroten completed the top five. Stanton has won all five regular season races at the Speedway.
The 18-lap IMCA Stock Car feature found Donavon Smith taking the checkers for the first time since winning the Frostbuster back on April 8. He worked his way methodically from tenth starting spot, to take over as captain of the ship by lap seven, and kept it the remaining way for the win. Damon Murty started eleventh and tried his best to catch Smith as he was seeking his 200th Stock Car win, but had to settle for second, Sixth place starter Michael Jaennette finished third, twelfth place starter Donovan Nunnikhoven took fourth and Trent Murphy was fifth.
Sprinkles began falling during the 20-lap Modified feature, but racing won out over Mother Nature in this one. Several yellows flew, and the one at lap nine eliminated several cars due to a mishap in turn four. This didn't deter Eric Elliott however, as he would lead all laps on his way to his first ever Modified win at the track. Jimmy Gustin challenged Elliott in the final laps, but could do no better than second place. Finishing a close third, was Jacob Murray who had won the last two features. Fourth place was seventh place starter, Racer Hulin and Ronn Lauritzen came from thirteenth, to finish fifth. Two Arizona drivers, living in Iowa for the summer, finished sixth and seventh. Tim Ward took sixth, and Ricky Thornton, who started twenty-third, was seventh.
The Open Quads were also on the program last evening as they will be the last Friday of each month. Danny Needles won their feature.
Luckily the rain held off long enough to complete the show. However, we ran into rain soon after leaving the track, that would have been enough to stop the program.
Racing continues next Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway with the green flag dropping at 7:30. There are several specials going on during this upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully you can find a race to enjoy. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend, and remember what the holiday is really all about.

Cayden can't be beat at Osky
Racing action returned on Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway....and with a hint of summer in the air.
There seems to be no stopping Cayden Carter in the Stock Car class, and Dustin Griffiths in the Hobby Stocks isn't far behind. Ricky Thornton, Jr. made a return appearance, and made his presence known by snapping up another Modified victory. Brett Lowry scored his first win at Osky this season in the IMCA Northern SportMod division, and Jake Benischek took his second win of the season in the Sport Compact class.
Ricky Thornton, Jr., who hails from Chandler, Arizona, but is spending this season racing in Iowa, and calling Harcourt, Iowa his temporary summer home, snatched up his 20th win of the season in the IMCA Modified class.
Dennis LaVeine, who had a successful last weekend of racing, picking up two feature wins, led the early portion of the 20-lapper. He had Andrew "the Kool Aid Kid" Schroeder dogging him. Zack VanderBeek was soon throwing his hat into the ring, and challenging both for the lead. When a yellow flew at lap seven, VanderBeek had just taken over the top spot, and by the time the next lap was scored after the restart, Thornton took command. Thornton, who started eighth on the field, then pulled away in the latter part of the race, and scored the victory, his 20th of the year! VanderBeek held the runner up spot, Todd Shute, who made his first trip of the year to the big old half mile, came from tenth starting spot, to take third. Cayden Carter was fourth and Colt Mather just beat out Andrew Schroeder as they finished fifth and sixth respectively.
It was back to victory lane for the Orange Crush ride piloted by Cayden Carter in the IMCA Stock Car feature. The "Gasman" started in the fifth row, and was leading at lap four. He fought by early leader Nathan Wood to take over the top spot. A caution flew at lap seven, and on that restart, Carter just drove off from the rest of the field, taking the feature win in cruise mode. Mike Hughes was a distant second, ahead of Altoona, Iowa racer, Todd Inman. Fourth went to Todd Reitzler and Missouri's Louis Lynch came home in fifth.
This was Carter's fourth straight victory in the class, making it a perfect regular season at Osky.
Brett Lowry showed some dominance in the IMCA Northern SportMod 16 lap feature. Lowry grabbed the lead from last week's winner, Colton Livezey at lap two and never looked back on his way to the checkers. Livezey held the runner up spot over sixth place starter, Jason McDaniel in third, and a close fourth was Logan Anderson. Carter VandenBerg came from ninth to round out the top five. Lowry continued his recent momentum, as he had won two features over the past weekend.
The IMCA Hobby Stock 15-lap main event also saw no stranger returning to the winner's circle. Dustin Griffiths made it three in a row at the speedway. Griffiths caught and passed Travis Bunnell at lap ten, and never gave it up. Bunnell hung on to second place, while just holding off veteran Bill Bonnett in third. Fourth was August Bach and another veteran racer, Brad Stephens completed the top five.
Nine of the IMCA Sport Compacts came to play last evening. John Whalen led the field through the first handful of laps, but could not hold off the hard charging Jake Benischek. Benischek then went on to lead the last five laps, taking his second win of the season at the track. Last week's winner, Bill "Happy Feet" Whalen got by brother John Whalen, as they finished second and third. Fourth was Marshalltown's John Gill and Lukas Yoder from Kalona, was fifth.
It was Bill and Ray's Wrecker Service night at the races, and they threw in some extra cash for the features. There was also a candy dash for the youngsters, many who were "free" from school for the summer. It was wonderful to see the huge Stars and Stripes hanging from one of Bill and Ray's wreckers, flying at the edge of the infield.
During hot laps, the track had clouds of dust rolling, especially from the corners. It looked like an old Iowa State Fair day race! The fairboard has been preparing the track this year, but thankfully, promoter Mike VanGenderen opted to help out and watered the track more significantly after hot laps, and had the cars and track packers work it in. It was appreciated by the fans as well as the drivers, for the effort. It saved the track.
A colorful toter and hauler was a late arrival at the track. Casey Skyburg, out of Rapid City, South Dakota tagged the field of the IMCA Modified feature in his #90 ride.
Remember, no racing next Wednesday night at Osky. Then on Thursday, June 2, the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models will bring their show to town, headlining the other regular weekly classes. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:45 and racing at 7:15. Check www.oskyspeedway.com or Southern Iowa Speedway Every Wednesday Night on Facebook, for more information.

Brown for the win at Boone
It was a night of first wins, as well as repeats at the Boone Speedway on a beautiful Saturday night for racing. Kyle Brown found his way to victory lane for the first time this season in the Modified class, Brandon Williams in the SportMod division and Donavon Smith in the IMCA Stock Cars both scored their second wins of the year. Solomon Bennett snagged win number three in the Hobby Stocks, and Cory Sauerman in the Mod Lites, won his first ever feature at the Speedway.
Kyle Brown put his 21K machine to the front at the drop of the green, and led all 20-laps on the way to the win in the IMCA Modified class. Brown couldn't shake Joel Bushore as he hung close the entire race, showing his nose to Brown. Brown however, had the momentum up top, and would rocket off the corners, allowing Bushore only the runner up spot in the end. Last week's winner and track point leader Mike VanGenderen started tenth, and got around Scott Davis in the closing laps as they finished third and fourth respectively. Eric Elliott completed the top five. This was Brown's first win at Boone this year, after last winning the Prelude to the 2015 Super Nationals back on September 5.
The IMCA Stock Cars put on their usual exciting 18-lap feature. Matt West, from Kellerton, Iowa, and Michael Murphy, Jefferson, battled for the lead for much of the race, with Donavon Smith throwing his hat into the ring late in the race. Smith, who had started eleventh on the field, was able to make the pass into the lead on the final lap, and get to the checkers first for the win. Michael Murphy took the runner up spot, followed by Matt West in third. Trent Murphy moved from tenth starting spot, to take fourth, and Rod Richards was fifth. This was Smith's second win of the year.
Brandon Williams also returned to victory lane for the second time in the IMCA Northern SportMod class. Williams started seventh and battled with leader Chad Ryerson from just past the halfway mark of the 18-lap event, and finally made it into the lead with two laps remaining. He would hold that lead the rest of the way to the flying checkers. Randy Roberts got by Ryerson in the final laps as they finished second and third. Fourth place finisher was Jonathan Logue, and Daniel Tasler rounded out the top five.
Earlier in the SportMod class, the top three finishers from the two heats ran a dash, sponsored by Tri-Lube, Harris Auto Racing, Bob Harris Enterprises among others that I wasn't able to catch. They drew for their starting positions in the 8-lap event. Daniel Tasler and Randy Roberts drew the front row starting spots, and Randy Roberts would be the lucky winner going home $600 richer for the win.
Solomon Bennett found victory lane again in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Bennett made his way around Seth Janssen at lap five of the the 12-lap race, and pulled away for a comfortable win. Janssen held on to the runner up spot, ahead of Dave Rieks in third. Aaron Rudolph held back Chad Legere as they went fourth and fifth. This was Bennett's third win of the regular season at Boone.
The Mod Lite 15-lap main event found a new driver visiting victory lane. Cory Sauerman grabbed the lead away from Joel Keenan at lap twelve and was able to hold it to the finish to score his first ever feature at the Boone track. Josh May took second place, and Joel Keenan was third. Fourth went to Randy Bryan and last week's winner, Bryan Zehm, was fifth.
The weather was absolutely beautiful yesterday, which just adds to the enjoyment of watching the races. There was a nice crowd on hand last night to watch the 106 cars checked into the pits. The Modifieds fielded 26 cars, while the Stock Cars had 22, SportMods 20, Hobby Stocks 24, and Mod Lites, 14. All classes had some exciting moments in their feature runs, making the fans rise to their feet.
Racing continues next Saturday night, May 28 with racing in all five divisions. Hot laps are 6:45 and the green flag drops at 7:30.

Murray, Murphy and Stanton take back to back wins at Marshalltown
After a week off due to wet conditions last Friday, the Marshalltown Speedway sprang back into action this Friday evening. Three drivers would take home back to back wins. Jake Murray repeated his win in the IMCA Modified division, Trent Murphy did the same in the IMCA Stock Car class, and Eric Stanton also made it two in a row by winning the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Sam Wieben dominated in the IMCA Northern SportMod A main, and Josh May got back to his winning way by taking the victory in the Mod Lite class.
Jake Murray wasted little time in getting to the front of the field in the 25-lap IMCA Modified feature, snatching the lead from Jon Snyder at lap three. He never relinquished that lead from there on to the checkers and the win. He had to outrun some heavy competition however. Eleventh place starter, Tom Berry, from Medford, Oregon hustled through the field to grab the runner up spot. He had to fend off third place finisher, Joel Rust in the closing laps. Fourth went to thirteenth place starter, Tim Ward, Chandler, Arizona, and Jimmy Gustin rounded out the top five. Murray repeated his win from May 6th.
The Class too Tough to Tame, the IMCA Stock Cars found Trent Murphy also with a repeat win at the end of the 20-lap event. Murphy gained the lead with a handful of laps remaining, and then took the win by a comfortable margin over second place finisher, Donavon Smith. Jay Schmidt started twelfth, and came away with third place, Michael Murphy, brother to the winner, was fourth and Brandon Pruitt, Dexter, Iowa racer, was fifth.
It took a while for the IMCA Northern SportMods to find their rhythm in their 20-lap feature. However, when Sam Wieben got the lead at lap two, he didn't let the subsequent cautions bother him, holding the lead the rest of the race to the flying checkers. Randy Roberts chased Wieben most of the race, and finished second. Jared VanDeest started twelfth and finished third, fourth went to eleventh place starter, Jake McBirnie, and Ethan Braaksma completed the top five.
Eric Stanton had to run down Gary Pfantz and Nathan Ballard on his way to his second consecutive win in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Stanton took command at lap eight and held off the rest of the field in the 15-lap feature, securing the win. Nathan Ballard finished second, over Pfantz, in third. Fourth was Boone, Iowa's Dustin Graham, and ninth place starter, Benji Irvine was fifth.
The Mod Lite 15-lap feature went to Josh May, despite a smoking machine for much of the race. May started seventh, avoided a skirmish as the race went green, and was leading when lap one was scored. He never looked back from there, leading all laps to take the win, his first of the season at Marshalltown. Joe Glick came from eighth to finish as the runner up, third went to tenth place starter, Randy Bryan, fourth was Bryan Zehm and Travis Stensland took fifth.
Green flag racing starts at 7:30 next Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway, with racing in all five regular divisions, plus the Outlaw Quads.
Be sure and check the racing calendar at Positively Racing for a race you may want to attend. There are lots of specials starting up now and continuing on through out the racing season. Help support the sport we all love.

Livezey gets first win at Osky
The Southern Iowa Speedway got night #3 of regular season racing under it's belt Wednesday night. Veteran racer Kelly Shryock showed his prowess in winning the Modified feature, Cayden Carter continues his dominance in the Stock Car class, and Colton Livezey got that elusive first feature win in the SportMod division. Dustin Griffiths made it two in a row in the IMCA Hobby Stocks and Bill Whalen, Jr. got back to his winning ways in the Sport Compact class.
Kelly Shryock started eighth in the IMCA Modified 20 lapper, and had to run down the competition. Jason Hall was having one of his best runs, leading the field of cars when a caution came out at lap seven when second place running Josh Foster found himself in a spin. When things got back under way, it was Kelly Shryock making a run on Hall. The veteran driver got the job done, taking over the lead at lap nine. A few laps later, Cayden Carter slipped past Hall to take over second place, and began the task of trying to catch Shryock. Shryock was having none of that, and stretched out his lead. Then another caution was needed at lap eighteen, when Hall lost his footing in turn one. The bunching of the field for the green-white-checkered finish could have proved to be interesting, but Shryock once again motored off and took the checkers by a comfortable margin. Cayden Carter finished as the runner up, Colt Mather came from tenth starting spot, to finish third, fourth was Zack VanderBeek, and Dennis LeVeine was fifth.
In the always entertaining IMCA Stock Car class, it was Cayden Carter once again sitting in Victory Lane. Carter patiently and methodically worked himself through the field of the 18-lapper. A caution at lap seven for debris bunched the field, giving Carter an advantage he was hoping for. Louis Lynch, the driver out of Glenwood, Missouri and fellow Missourian, Derrick Agee, were leading the pack when the yellow flew. Todd Inman was sitting in third, despite a mangled right side from contact with the outside wall. Carter was still sitting a good handful of positions behind the leader, but each lap, he began to pick off his opponents. Meanwhile, Lynch and Agee were having a battle, Agee finally winning out and taking over the lead. But now sitting in third, was the 10C of Carter in his orange Roger Kelderman owned hot rod. Carter started reeling in the leaders, first getting past Inman, then Lynch and setting his eye on leader Agee as the laps quickly wound down. Carter caught Agee, pestered him for a lap or two, and then made the pass coming out of turn four as lap sixteen was scored. He would then go on to take the checkers, winning his third feature in the class at Osky this year. Agee held on to the runner up spot, Lynch went third, and Damon Murty got by Inman as they finished fourth and fifth respectively. Carter has a perfect record in the Stock Car class at Osky this year, a pretty nice start to the season and on his 21st birthday to boot.
It was good to see Colton Livezey finally get into the winner's circle at Osky by winning the IMCA Northern SportMod feature. In fact, he dominated all sixteen caution free laps....leading from start to finish. Livezey started on the pole and won comfortably. Runner up, Brayton Carter chased Livezey the entire distance. Curtis VanDerWal had his two-race streak broken, having to settle for third. Fourth was Jason McDaniel and eighth place starter Carter VandenBerg rounded out the top five. Livezey finally got his first win at the Monster Half Mile, after it has eluded him with close finishes in the past.
Dustin Griffiths made it two in a row by winning the 16-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Griffiths had to work his way by opening laps leader Mike Kincaid, then Steve Allen and veteran Bill Bonnett. Griffiths led by lap six and was content to let them battle it out behind for the bridesmaid position. Griffiths took the easy win, while Bonnett finished a distant runner up. Third went to Allen, Danny Thrasher was fourth and Brad Stephens was fifth.
A dozen IMCA Sport Compacts came to try their hand at Osky. We note that many eastern Iowa drivers are making the trip over on Wednesday nights this season. There was no stranger in victory lane at the end of this feature however, as Bill Whalen got back on track and captured the win. Whalen led all caution-free laps on the way to an easy win. Cody VanDusen and Steven Struck, two Atalissa, Iowa racers, finished second and third. Lukas Yoder, Kalona, Iowa, was fourth and Jake Benischek from Durant, completed the top five.
After four weathered out regular season nights, the fans and drivers alike, welcomed the great weather we had last evening. Next week, will be a regular night of racing in all five IMCA classes. Then on June 2, please note, the Southern Iowa Speedway will be racing on THURSDAY night (there will be no races on Wednesday, June 1) when the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models come to town, headlining the IMCA classes.
Thanks to Mike VanGenderen and crew for another great night of racing...which was completed by 9:37 p.m.

VanGenderen repeats at Boone
Modified driver Mike VanGenderen and Mod Lite racer, Bryan Zehm,
returned to victory lane on Saturday night for the second time of the
regular season at the Boone Speedway. Jay Schmidt made it to the
winner's circle in the IMCA Stock Car class, after starting the year off
right by taking the win in the Frostbuster special. Jake McBirnie won
the Northern SportMod feature for the first time as did Hobby Stock
driver Cody Gustoff.
Mike VanGenderen started ninth and ran down pole sitter Joel Bushore in the 20-lap Modified event, pursuing him relentlessly from lap six, until finally making the pass with a handful of laps remaining. Those final laps saw VanGenderen pull away and take the comfortable win. Bushore held on to second place. Third went to Tony Cox, seventh place starter Eric Elliott finished fourth and eleventh place starter, Jimmy Gustin completed the top five. VanGenderen also won back on April 23.
After suffering mechanical issues in last week's IMCA Stock Car feature, Jay Schmidt got back on track and snapped up a feature win. Schmidt slid under Michael Murphy out of turn four to take the lead at lap six. Schmidt never looked back from there, on his way to the checkers. Veteran racer Terry Pruitt finished second and Rod Richards came from eleventh starting spot, to finish third. Last week's winner Trent Murphy was fourth after starting in twelfth, and Cory Bushnell was fifth. The defending track champion, this was Schmidt's first season point's win, after beginning the year with a Frostbuster special victory.
Cody Gustoff led the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature from start to finish in securing his first visit to the winner's circle this season. John Watson challenged Gustoff the entire race, but had to settle for the runner up spot. Last week's winner, Solomon Bennett was in hot pursuit, running in third, when his motor blew, ending his night with just a few laps remaining. Third then went to Iowa City racer, Daniel Wauters, who started twelfth. This was Wauters' first appearance at the track. Aaron Rudolph and Jack Phillips rounded out the top five.
It was a shoot out between Brandon Williams and Jake McBirnie in the 18-lap IMCA Northern SportMod main event, thrilling the crowd. The two swapped leads several times before McBirnie claimed the final lead in the closing moments, sealing the win. Williams had to settle for second. Cory Rose, who led the opening laps, was third, fourth went to ninth place starter, Jonathan Logue, and Sam Wieben made it to fifth after starting eleventh. This was McBirnie's first win of the 2016 season at Boone. He is the defending track champion in the division.
Bryan Zehm took his second win of the season in the Mod Lite division. Zehm started seventh, took the lead at lap eight, and never relinquished it to the checkers. Madrid driver, Justin Rankin finished second, third went to Randy Bryan, fourth to Cory Sauerman and Charlie Brown was fifth. There was a scary moment at lap ten, when Larry Sorenson rolled violently between turns three and four. Thankfully, he was okay.
It was another chilly night for racing, but luckily the wind died down giving the fans a bit of a break. After Mother Nature threw a wrench in mid-week and Friday night racing, it was good to finally get back to the racing scene.
There are many specials coming up, so be sure and check the calendar at Positively Racing for a race you may wish to attend over and above your weekly track's program.

Gustin shines to take Modified win at Boone
Racing won out over the raindrops at Boone on Saturday night, unlike last week's cancellation due to rain. The fans were treated to a great show in all five divisions, that found 107 race cars checked into the pits.
Jimmy Gustin would grab his first win in the Modified class, as did Randy Roberts in the SportMod division, Trent Murphy in the Stock Cars, and Cory Dennis in the Mod Lite's. Only the Hobby Stock class would see Solomon Bennett repeat a win this season.
Cory Dennis won his first feature of the year in the Mod Lites, passing Justin Rankin at lap ten, for the top spot. He had to hold off Bryan Zehm, who had made attempts for the pass late in the race.... the two going down the back stretch side by side on the white flag lap, but Zehm had to be content with second. Charlie Brown started tenth and finished third, fourth went to Randy Bryan and Joe Glick came from twelfth to finish in fifth.
In the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, it was Randy Roberts snatching the lead from Curtis Veber at lap four, and pulling away from the field. A yellow flew at lap sixteen of the eighteen lap event, but it did not prove to be a game changer for Roberts. He kept his lead to the checkers, scoring his first victory at Boone this season. Jonathan Logue moved from starting seventh, to finish in second place, Ryan Rose was third, Jake McBirnie took fourth and Brandon Williams rounded out the top five.
Solomon Bennett made it two in a row visiting victory lane in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Bennett fought past Jordan Peters to take the lead at lap seven and keeping it to take the win by a comfortable margin. Chad Legere got around Peters with a lap to go, as they went second and third. Eleventh place starter Matt McDonald finished fourth and Eric Stanton finished fifth from starting in twelfth position.
In the IMCA Modified 20-lap feature, it was Joel Bushore showing the way, leading until lap fourteen. That would be when Jimmy Gustin and Mike VanGenderen, who had started side by side in row five, would come calling. Gustin made his way around Bushore and into the lead, and not to be outdone, VanGenderen also got around Bushore and began hunting down leader Gustin. It wasn't to be on this night however, as Gustin took the win, his first of the year at Boone Speedway. VanGenderen, who had won back on April 23rd, finished a close second. Bushore held on to third, Russ Dickerson took fourth and fifth went to eleventh place starter, Jon Snyder.
The IMCA Stock Car feature completed the night's racing action with their 18-lap main event. Veteran racer Robert Stofer led the field through the first ten laps. Then ninth place starter, Trent Murphy made the pass on the back shoot, and took command. Murphy stretched his lead, taking the win in comfortable fashion. Stofer scored the runner up position, and pole sitter Cory Piffer finished third. Donavon Smith took fourth place, and Andrew Knode, fifth. This was Murphy's second win in as many nights, after his victory at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night.
A few sprinkles turned heavier just after the second SportMod heat. Cars were kept on the track, more brought out to pack, and the familiar "green machines" also took over to keep from loosing the track. They all did their job, and racing got back underway after the delay. The usual farming session after heat racing was eliminated, and we went right into feature racing. What could have been a wash out, turned into a completed show which was over right at 10:30.
Racing continues next Saturday, May 14 at the Boone Speedway. Grandstands open at 6 p.m., with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.

Murray, Murphy, VanDeest, Stanton and Glick triumph on Cliff Chamber's Memorial night.
May 6, 2016
After Mother Nature ruined last week's racing at the Marshalltown Speedway, a great field of cars was eager for racing last evening. We counted 101 in the five regular classes plus nine Nostalgia cars that give a glimpse to the fans of the racing of yesteryear. It was also Cliff Chambers Memorial night, a night when Cliff is remember for all the things he contributed to the Marshalltown Speedway including promoting.
Jacob Murray put his new Murray car to the test on Friday night, and at the end of the night, had it sitting in Victory Lane. Murray won the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, out running 26 other contenders. Murray started on the pole and led the entire race, maneuvering the slicked up track to take the win. Kyle Brown came from eighth starting spot to finish in second, just ahead of Ricky Thornton, Jr. in third. Racer Hulin finished fourth and Tim Ward rounded out the top five. Rumor is that Brown had his shocks claimed after the race.
Trent Murphy put his ride into the winner's circle in the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. Murphy came from the fourth row and took a comfortable win over runner up Tyler Pickett. A close third was tenth place starter Donavon Smith, who just continues to methodically and patiently move his way toward the front. Steve Meyer came from eleventh to finish fourth and veteran Jeff Wollam had a good run to take fifth. It's been nice to see a veteran racer from more than a handful of years absence, Jerry Schipper, back behind the wheel, piloting the #89J. We watched him race at the old Eldora, Iowa track back in the day, and it's always fun to see a driver return to his passion.
Eric Stanton went home with his third win in a row at the speedway, in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. Stanton took the lead on lap one, and never looked back. He finished comfortably ahead of second place finisher, Tyson Overton, who battled by third place Leah Wroten in the closing laps. Fourth went to Dustin Graham and Gene Nicklas was fifth. Stanton did get an advantage when the initial start sent cars scrambling and the race was called a no go. This would send several cars to the tail, and Stanton moved up several rows to begin the race. He said in Jerry Vansickel's post race winner's circle interview, that he will soon have his own ride returning to the ring, after having a car destroyed at the Southern Iowa Speedway earlier this season. His "rent a ride" has been courtesy of Jamie Songer. Another great example of racer helping racer.
A marathon IMCA Northern SportMod feature ended with Jared VanDeest taking his second win of the season. VanDeest was twelfth in the starting line up, pestered early leader Joey Schaefer for several laps, and took over the top spot by lap nine. He kept the top spot, as the yellow/checkers flew to end the race. Cory Rose came from eighth starting spot to finish as the runner up, and Curt Hilmer was third. Jake McBirnie had to tag the field after an incident at the beginning of the race, and flew through the field to finish fourth. Joey Schaefer completed the top five.
The SportMods had a heck of a time even getting their race underway. It took SIX trys before they could get the first lap scored! Whether it was the dry, slick, dusty conditions of the track, or what, it seemed that the race would never get finished. Three more yellows would fly before the marathon race was called over. The race was called over under yellow/checkers when a car brought out yet another yellow. This was after approximately 30 minutes.
Joe Glick led the entire Mod Lite feature to capture his first ever win at the Marshalltown Speedway. Randy Bryan chased Glick most of the race and finished as the runner up. Charlie Brown, Josh May and Mike Morrill rounded out the top five. After checking back through to 2010 records, Glick now has a win at the track under his belt. He has been having a good season so far and running well wherever we have seen him. He already has a win at the Boone Speedway this year.
The Nostalgia feature event was won by the #100 car driven by Brandon Holt out of Mason City. It's always fun to see the cars we grew up watching, on the track again. They too had a bit of trouble keeping it going forward, several of them putting it in spin mode during the race. Not being familiar with some of the drivers, we did catch that many were from Mason City and with the Holt name! I believe it was #24 Matt Holt taking second place.
Racing continues next Friday night. Hot laps are 7 p.m. and racing at 7:30. Get out and find a race to attend somewhere. Check the calendar at Positively Racing for a race to attend....support the sport we all love!

Gustin class of Modified field at Osky, T Mac claims Sprint Invaders win
After a two week black out due to rain at the Southern Iowa Speedway, the racing last evening was stout in all classes plus the Sprint Invaders came to town for a show.
In the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders, Terry McCarl showed he knows his way around the Monster Half Mile. He had no trouble in taking the 25-lap feature, leading it from start to finish. He became the recipient of the pole starting spot when John Schulz had his ride die on the parade lap, needing a push and forced to tag the field for the start. McCarl pulled to a sizable lead, dicing through traffic easily, when the race was red flagged when the 9M of Ricky Montgomery hit the turn one wall, and rotated wildly along the fence. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when he emerged from his machine, uninjured. There was more than a 20 minute delay however, as a bar had become caught in the fence.
McCarl picked up where he had left off when the race returned to green. He continued his charge at the front to the checkers, picking up his 10th career Sprint Invaders win. Oklahoma's Wayne Johnson, made a late race pass on Jamie Ball, as they went second and third. Fourth was Jarrold Schneiderman and Jon Agan took fifth.
Thirteen IMCA Sport Compacts came to play last night, new faces among them. Jake Benishek led the entire race until the final circuit when Cody VanDusen made the pass into first and getting to the checkers first. However, a post race inspection, found VanDusen with an infraction of the rules, leading to his disqualification. Benishek was awarded the win. Second was then the 9H of Levi Heath, third was Shane Evans, fourth was Brad Havel and Lukas Yoder was fifth.
The Hobby Stock feature found the #10G of Dustin Griffiths sitting in Victory Lane at the end of the 15-lap feature. Griffiths chased down leader Brad Stephans at lap thirteen, and held him off for the win. Stephans had to be content with the runner up spot, third was Danny Thrasher and Nick Uhl and Craig Brown finished fourth and fifth.
The IMCA Stock Cars put on quite a show last evening! Nathan Wood and Derrick Agee went at it lap after lap, exchanging leads more than half a dozen times, while cars a bit further back were going 3-wide in an attempt to catch the two. One of those cars, the 10C of Cayden Carter, did just that. He threw his hat into the ring with just a couple of laps remaining----and made good on that challenge. Carter took over the lead from Agee as the green was held high, and kept it to the checkers for the win. Nathan Wood made a last gasp effort to surge by Agee as they went second and third. Fourth was Mike Hughes and Jason See took fifth.
The IMCA Northern SportMods found Austin Paul snatch the immediate lead and looking strong. It wasn't long however, until the familiar #1V of Curtis VanDerWal came calling, working his way to second by lap six after starting in row five. VanDerWal took command at lap nine, and then stretched his lead in scoring win #2 of the season. Austin Paul finished in second place and Carter VandenBerg made the run from starting in row four, to finish third. Fourth was Brett Lowry and Logan Anderson rounded out the top five.
The IMCA Modifieds had a steller field of 17 cars, and they put on a great show for the nice crowd on hand. Anytime you have Cayden Carter sitting alongside Kelly Shryock on the front row, you know it's going to be a dandy race up front! That's exactly what it was through the first eleven laps, then a caution flew. Carter and Shryock had been swapping leads back and forth, and at the caution, it was Carter holding down the top spot. However, sitting in third by that time was Richie Gustin in the 7SR. Gustin, who was piloting a brand new Harris chassis purchased by Shawn Ritter, was now up to third place from starting ninth. When the green flew, Gustin seized the moment, slipping under Carter, and into the lead before turn one. From there on, it was all Gustin, as he motored away for the win...the first on the brand new car. Carter held on to finish as the runner up, just ahead of Shryock, in third. Fourth was Colt Mather and Ricky Thornton, Jr. made it up to fifth after having to tag the field from a "no go" incident he was involved in on the initial start.
Regular season racing continues next Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway with racing in all five regular classes.
