Michael Murphy AND Michael Murphy Win Memorial Day Specials at Boone

It hardly seems possible that it was time for the Deery Brothers annual Memorial Day visit at the Boone Speedway.  Where has the time gone in this race season?  The early start time and sun still high in the sky, plus the stiff wind out of the west and warm temperatures, tried playing a little havoc with the racing surface.  Several of the famous Boone farming sessions, helped the situation. "The boys of summer", the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Models were the headliners for the program, but with four support classes also in action, all in all, it made for a great day/night of racing.

All of the support classes, the Mod Lites, IMCA SportMods, Stock Cars, and Hobby Stocks ran extra laps for their feature events for the holiday special show.  The Mod Lites kicked off the mains by running 18-laps.  Drawing the pole starting spot, Josh May was gone at the drop of the green flag.  He had little challenge in taking the win, which went flag-to-flag.  Ed Zehm, who chased May through the entire event, finished a distant second.  Third went to Joel Keenan, fourth was Randy Bryan, and fifth was Jason Whitehead.

The Deery Brothers ran their 40-lap race next after the Mod Lites had smoothed the track a bit after a farming session.  The drivers had participated in a card draw for the top 12 starting spots earlier.  The fans enjoyed having those drivers brought in front of the main grandstand for the "game".  When all of the giving and taking of face down cards was completed, it would be Tyler Bruening getting the ace, and point leader, Michael Murphy, Jr, getting the deuce, to make up the front row.

Murphy shot to the lead, and for the next 38 caution-free laps, circled the 1/4 track flawlessly through lap traffic, Bruening trailing him.  Then came lap 38.  A spin out in turn four caused the yellow to fly, putting to an end what was appearing to be a caution-free race.  This set up a green-white-checkered finish--which wasn't to be on the first attempt!  Another yellow flag flew when cars piled up, and another green-white-checkered situation.  I'm sure this was not what Murphy was wanting to see, opening the door for Bruening and veterans Jeff Aikey and Ray Guss, Jr. right behind.  Murphy pulled it off though, with no trouble, taking the win, his third in the Deery Series this year, and extending his point lead in the series.
Bruening, Aikey and Guss finished second through fourth in that order; Luke Goedert taking fifth.

After another track grooming session, the IMCA Hobby Stocks were called to the track for a 15-lap feature.  John Watson, a driver who nearly "owns" the track after many wins accumulated in the past two years, drew the pole position.  However, it was the inside front row, Andy Mahlstedt that took the lead at the drop of the green.  The slick track made for some traction issues for a bit, but by lap five, Watson had made the pass into the lead.  The feature would go flag-to-flag in this one, Watson taking the win, followed by Mahlstedt in second.  Tyler Pickett was scored in third, fourth went to Dustin Filloon, and Robert Smith completed the top five.

The IMCA Northern SportMods went 20-laps in their A main.  Darren Huntley led this one past halfway, Scott Davis tucked in behind him.  Daniel Tasler was putting the pressure on Davis though, and on lap thirteen, made the pass into second.  That's when a yellow flew, bunching up the field for the restart.  That restart worked to Tasler's advantage as he took the highroad around Huntley and into the lead.  The final lap would see Huntley suddenly exit off the track and into the infield, putting Davis to finish in the runner up spot behind Tasler, the winner.  Eric Elliott finished in third, fourth was Lacona, Iowa driver Casey Greubel, and fifth went to recent high school graduate, Joel Rust.

A 20-lap IMCA Stock Car main capped off the program.  Michael Murphy--the local Michael Murphy from Jefferson, started fifth, but was leading by the fifth lap.  Murphy would keep that lead to the checkers flying.  This would score him his first IMCA Stock Car feature win at the Boone Speedway.  He has been a very successful Hobby Stock driver, taking many wins at Boone, and just this year, moved up to the stock car class. Michael Jaennette came from the fourth row, to take the runner up spot.  He fought past Jamesport, Missouri racer, Dean Wray, whom we have always seen piloting an IMCA Modified previously, taking third,  Fourth place went to Lake City, Iowa's Dave Smith, and fifth was veteran driver Robert Stofer.

So ended our Memorial Holiday of racing, the action getting done about 9:13.  We will take Tuesday off for a little resting up, and then head down to the Southern Iowa Speedway on Wednesday night.  Sounds like we are in for a change in the weather, so will we will no doubt be using the layers and coats we keep at hand all during our race season.  After all, it is Iowa and we have froze in July!

Get out and support a track somewhere, helping to keep this great sport we all love, alive and healthy.
Happy racing!

Shute and Watson Claim Back-to-Back Wins

It was a warm night at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night.  A good crowd was on hand for "Scout Night" where those wearing their uniforms were admitted free and got a free hot dog to boot.  A good field of 139 race cars came to play on this night as well.  More than a few yellow flags would fly during the night, and two drivers would go home with back-to-back wins.

The Mod Lite feature had a blip when Josh May put his ride on it's side in turn two.  He was okay, but the incident would hurt his point's chase as he was tied with Randy Bryan going into the night.  The win was looking to go to Mike Kennedy as he was leading comfortably in the late going.  He wasn't counting on that being snatched away from him at the last corner, however.  It was veteran Ed Zehm who made that last corner pass on Kennedy; grabbing the lead and the win away from him.  Zehm claimed his first win of the season, Kennedy having to settle for second.  Third went to Mike Morrill who had started back in the sixth row, fourth was Jeff Stensland and fifth went to Andy Hennigar.

The IMCA SportMod feature came next.  The last few laps were a shoot out between leader Daniel Tasler, and point leader Eric Elliott.  Elliott fought past Tasler on the backstretch of the last lap but it was a real battle to the finish line, with a bit of "rubbin' is racin'." In the end, Elliott managed to pull off the win, taking his first victory at the track this year.  Tasler was no doubt a disappointed runner up.  Following Tasler to finish third was Anthony Onstot.  Onstot had led much of of the race but lost the lead after one of several restarts due to yellow flags. Fourth place was Andy Tiernan and fifth, Cory Rose.

It was "a barn burner" in the IMCA Modified feature with great action going on between Jake Durbin and Todd Shute up front.  Shute was able to make the pass on Durbin late, and would come home with the victory for the second straight week, Durbin having to settle for runner up.  Jimmy Gustin started deep in the field and worked his way through the pack to take third.  Russ Dickerson took fourth and Mike VanGenderen, who had started alongside Gustin near the back, came home to finish fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars found a new winner to add to the books when Mike Munson took the win. Munson led the entire race to capture the victory.  Wayne Gifford, the point leader, finished in second place. Gifford would  pass Munson, but a yellow would come out after the field had taken the white flag, reverting the finish back to the previous lap.  The yellow/checkered finish ended when a car was sitting facing traffic right at the flagstand. Donavon Smith was third, followed by Rod Richards in fourth and Norm Belew ran one of his best races of the season, to capture fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks ended the night's racing and who should be back in the winner's circle but none other than John Watson.  Watson is putting his name on the track, claiming it as his own.  Watson came from row six to the lead by lap five.  This would be his third straight win, his fourth regular season win, and then throw in the Frostbuster win, making it five just this year at Boone.  His 2011 campaign was just as successful too. Aaron Rudolph finished in second, third went to Curt Reed who began the race back in row nine, fourth was Cory Adams, and Clint Rothfus, early leader held on to finish fifth.

Next up at the Boone Speedway will be their annual Memorial Day IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series for late models.  Joining them on the roster will be the IMCA SportMods, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and the Mod Lites.  It will be an early start time, with the grandstand opening at 3 p.m, hot laps scheduled for 4, and racing at 5.  The next regular points race will be next Saturday night, June 2.  It will be a special "School's Out" night with free admission to those 17 and under.  Hot laps for regular night racing is always 6:45, and racing at 7:30.

This is a getting to be a busy racing time, so hunt out a race to attend.  Not hard to do with all the specials going on during this time.  You can check out some potential events under the calendar portion of www.positivelyracing.com for one you might like to attend.  Happy racing!

Four Repeats, One New Winner at Osky

Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway, we saw all kinds of racing--modifieds, sportmods, stock cars, hobby stocks, sport compacts AND wheelbarrows.  That last one was thrown in as one of manager Mike VanGenderen's little "extras".  It was fun and entertaining for the crowd and the participants!  One driver sat in the wheelbarrow, while another pushed him through a series of turns--around a barrel and around an official--and back to the checkered flag.  After all was said and done, it was the team of Whalen and Whalen winning it all.  John Whalen and Bill Whalen, Jr., Sport Compact racers, earned their way into the speedway free next week as their prize.  Runners up were Danny Thrasher, hobby stock driver and Jason Hall, sportmod driver, who will get in for half price next week.

When it was feature time, the first on the track were the IMCA Sport Compacts. Veteran Merv Chandler once again showed the boys how it's done and came home with the win.  John Whalen led through lap five of the eight-lapper, but Chandler had little trouble in making the pass for the lead.  John Whalen kept second place.  Newcomer to the track this season, Chuck Fullencamp from Ft. Madison, came home in third place, and Bill Whalen, Jr. and Larry Hopkins rounded out the five car field.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks saw Kevin Fee in the winner's circle for the first time this year.  Fee, who started back in eighth spot, snatched the lead from early leader Bobby Greene and then pulled away from the competition.  Greene held second position  the rest of the way to take the runner up spot.  Danny Thrasher finished third, point leader Shannon Anderson came from starting tenth, to finish fourth, and Dustin Griffiths took the fifth spot.

The IMCA SportMods ran their 15-lap main event next.  Jason McDaniel took the lead on lap two, and sailed home to an easy win, his second of the season at Osky.  Eric Flander finished a distant second, Carter VanDenBerg a distant third, and Curtis VanDerWal held off point leader Jesse Sobbing, as they finished fourth and fifth respectively. As a note, Brett Lowry had bad luck for the night when during his heat race, he dropped the transmission and the drive shaft on the frontstretch, right at the flagstand.  His night was done early.

The IMCA Stock Cars once again provided the fans with an exciting race.  There seemed to always be a pack of cars, going three-four wide somewhere on the track.  However, it was Nathan Wood who cleared himself from that pack of cars, got to the lead by lap eight, and never looked back.  Wood took the checkers for his second win of the season.  Second place went to the "Chelsea Charger", Damon Murty, third was Matt Greiner.  Jeff Joldersma made the haul over from McClelland, Iowa in southwestern Iowa, to finish fourth and Paul Shepherd was fifth.  In the post-race interview, Wood profusely thanked Murty for his help recently in getting his race car where he wanted it to be.  Guess it worked!  It's always a great thing when racers help racers.  That's racing family for you!

Eight IMCA Modifieds were on hand tonight.  New cars show up, others don't return, it's been the norm this year and you can't predict who will show.  This week, the newbie was Jeff Waterman from Quincy, Illinois.  His long haul was not a happy one, as he trailed smoke across the finish line in his heat race. He loaded up and left the track early.  However, a returning driver who was absent last week, had a good night.  Jacob Murray, who had won the week before last, came back and took home another win.  Murray took the win over Cayden Carter, Shane Weller, Mark Widmar and Brandon Banks.

Next Wednesday night, May 30 will be another weekly points race for all classes.  It's also been deemed Ottumwa/Hedrick night.  Show an ID with those towns, and you will be admitted for just $5.  Hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.  Happy racing!

Brothers Finish One-Two in Deery Brothers Showdown at Mo'Town

The IMCA Deery Brothers Late Models came to town on Tuesday night at the Marshalltown Speedway.  It was a pleasant night to be watching the big beasts on the highbanks for their annual visit to the track.  A couple of spectacular roll overs came during their B main event--making my heart skip a beat.  The Mod Lite's  and the IMCA Northern SportMods were also on the program, adding to the night's racing.

The Mod Lite feature went 12-laps.  Josh May scooted off to the lead from his pole starting spot, stretching his lead from the pack.  That would end when a yellow flag flew, and the field got bunched up on the restart.  Mike Morrill had been flying through the field from starting back in eighth, and was pedaling hard to catch up to the leader and was now running a distant second.  The yellow was no doubt welcomed by Morrill, as it put him tucked in right behind the leader at the drop of the green.  Morrill took full advantage of that situation, and soon grabbed the lead from May.  Morrill would then motor on to the win.  May was looking to take the runner up position, but as they approached the checkered flag, May was off power, allowing Andy Hennigar and Dusty Masolini to slip past him for positions second and third.  May rolled across the finish line in fourth and Bryan Zehm took fifth.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had 22 cars on hand for their 20-lap main event.  It was Jenae Gustin shooting to the lead early, wheeling her ride around the track as if she owned it.  Most of the race was further back in the pack with Eric Elliott, Austin Kaplan and Racer Hulin duking it out for second through fourth. A restart with five laps remaining led to an interesting finish when Hulin got to second place, closed on Gustin, but was unable to make it anything more than a fleeting interesting attempt on the leader.  Jenae Gustin took the win, Hulin having to settle for the runner up spot on this evening.  Third went to Austin Kaplan, Eric Elliott was third and Joel Rust--recent high school grad--rounded out the top five.

There were twenty-seven IMCA late models in attendance for their playtime on Tuesday night.  Two scary incidents in the B main event,  made for some heart-skipping moments!  The first incident happened just as the cars took the green flag.  Veteran driver Curt Martin was on the bad end of this deal.  Martin flipped his car right on the front chute and Jeff Mitirsin leaped up and over him.  Thankfully, Martin was okay, but no doubt a bit sore this morning.  He mentioned that he had had neck surgery a year ago, so was hoping this had not done any damage.

When the action got back under way in the consy race, it was soon to bring another scary moment.  Jeff Mitrisin (driving the 5J car that we have noted was last piloted by TJ Criss) was riding the high line. He had been able to tag the field from the earlier Curt Martin incident. Running high, he then caught a hole in turn one, or possibly broke something, resulting in some violent rolls, ending up over the banking.  Thankfully, he too was okay. It's not often we see a late model roll, but two in the same race, was way too many!

The 50-lap Deery Brothers race capped off the night.  Earlier, the top 12 qualifiers were brought to the frontstretch for a fun "draw for starting position" card game.  It was not only a fun deal, but gave the fans a great opportunity to SEE the drivers who drive the cars.  After a bit of fun when the drivers were given an opportunity to give away their card to another driver, it was later-arriver to the track, Bryan Klein keeping his card, no one snatching it away, and getting that top starting spot.  Andy Eckrich would give his card away to local favorite Richie Gustin, and get the outside pole.  Andy's brother, Denny would also give his card away to Tyler Bruening, and get the #3 starting spot, but Bruening didn't fare too bad, as he ended up with the #4 spot.

It's always fun to see a 4-wide salute of the cars, but when the late models do it, and especially on the quarter-mile track situated so close to the grandstands, it's a thrill! When the green dropped,  Andy Eckrich led Klein on the first lap, but soon brother Denny was into second.  From there on it was a race between the brothers.  Denny managed to slip by Andy and into the lead as the laps counted down.  They snaked through traffic skillfully, no incidents causing a halt to the action, and the brothers finishing one-two.  Following the Eckrich boys was veteran Jeff Aikey in third, Tyler Bruening in fourth and Michael Murphy, Jr. in fifth.  Who would have thought the 50-lap contest would have gone flag-to-flag.  The only near-miss incident we even noticed was when Dean Wagner, in his UNI Panther's car slipped off the track coming out of turn two.  He was able to gather it back and the action continued without stoppage.

The action was completed by 9:20 p.m., allowing the fans an early mid-week departure for home.  We enjoyed our night at the races as we shared it with fellow PR colleagues, Jeff Broeg and Kevin Trittien, and Ryan Clark, who was stationed in the infield scoring/announcing stand. He was able to throw in a few quips on the PA too. Thanks to the Foxman for the shout out to Positively Racing again too!

It will be right back at a race track for us tonight as we had down the road to Osky.  The Southern Iowa Speedway will have Dick Berggren's Speedway Illustrated representatives on hand tonight to gather information for an upcoming article in their publication.  Happy racing!

Shute Victorious at Boone and Stenhouse Claims Iowa Speedway as His House

We had a full weekend of racing this past Friday through Sunday.  After our regular night of bench sitting at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night, it was off to our Saturday night home at the Boone Speedway.  Sunday, we drove the short distance...the shortest to a racetrack we have...to the Iowa Speedway for some NASCAR Nationwide racing.

The Mod Lite feature at Boone took a bit of time getting in.  The whole night seemed to be filled with yellow flags flying, and the Mod Lite's started it off.  Joel Huggins, who had been leading the race from early on was motoring right along in the driver's seat until he lost the handle in turn four, and second place runner Mike Kennedy was unable to avoid him...causing Kennedy to wind up on his side.  Josh May inherited the lead on the restart, and had an easy time from there on, taking the win. Jeff Stensland slipped by Randy Bryan on the final go around as they finished second and third in that order.  Fourth went to Dusty Masolini and fifth to Joel Keenan.

The Northern SportMods didn't have to run a B main for the first time in a while.  All 25 cars were eligible for the A main; one car unable to make the starting call.  Darren Huntley maintained the lead early on, but Nick Roberts made the pass into the lead by lap ten.  Meanwhile, Eric Elliott was making his way through the field from starting in row six, passed the third place car, and soon, swung around Huntley to take over second.  Final checkers flew with Roberts taking the win, Elliott in second, Huntley held third, fourth was Cody Hennings, and fifth, David Schlicht.

The IMCA Modified 20-lap feature was dominated by Todd Shute.  Shute pulled away from his nearest challenger and took his first win of the season at Boone.  Following a distant second was Jake Durbin, and Jimmy Gustin took third after flying through the field.  Gustin had pitted for a tire change earlier, having to tag the field on a restart.  Mike VanGenderen, deemed "The Flying Dutchman", took fourth over Jon Snyder in fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars turned into a two-man race for the lead.  Eric Brown and Cory Bushnell challenged each other for the top spot nearly the entire race.  This night, Brown was the victor, taking his first win of the year at Boone.  Following Bushnell who finished second, was Donavon Smith, a close third.  Fourth went to Jay Schmidt over Wayne Gifford in fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stock 12-lap event saw an old familiar face back in victory circle.  John Watson has the Boone Speedway figured out, taking his third regular season win to go along with his earlier Frostbuster victory.  This goes along with his nine season wins last year, in addition to the 2011 Frostbuster! Pretty impressive.  Austin Luellen came from starting in row five to take the runner up spot, with Aaron Rudolph following him through from the same fifth row, to take third.  Matt McDonald and Curt Reed followed in fourth and fifth.

Sunday, May 20, we headed over to the Iowa Speedway for the NASCAR Nationwide 250 sponsored by Pioneer.  Seed corn signs lined the way into the track.  Typical Iowa!!  Cloud cover most of the day proved to be a welcome condition, as we enjoyed the day in comfort from our seats located in the upper deck toward turn one.

Most of the top finishers in this race ran up front the entire day.  One driver however, Kurt Busch, started back in 30th position.  It was interesting to see him move up through the field, picking off car after car, to be scored in 13th by lap 23, and seventh by lap 66.  This was really a Ricky Stenhouse day though.  Again!
Even after pit stops, he would immediately take command, driving off from the field. Not many yellows flew on this day, just four I believe.  One would be for the popular #7 of Danica Patrick, who blew a tire and smacked the wall about lap 113.  Evidently there was enough damage from that hit to retire her to the garage, never to return.

Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. claimed his third straight Nationwide race at the Iowa Speedway....claiming it in pretty commanding fashion.  Second place finisher Elliott Sadler hung around all day looking to make a challenge, which never really came.  Busch was looking to finish at third, but on the final lap, his car broke loose in turn three, slipping him back a couple of positions.  Michael McDowell was happy for that situation, as he made it up to score third.  Fourth went to Austin Dillon, grandson of Richard Childress, and Busch gathered it back in to score fifth.

We had a very enjoyable day at the Iowa Speedway.  Parking was not an issue at all, even with us arriving at about 11 a.m. for the 1 p.m. scheduled start time. The race ended at 3:20 p.m. Leaving was a bit more of a wait time, but as we usually notice, if you are heading back to the east as we do, things go pretty smooth.
We were home before 4:30, making it even a shorter length of time than being at one of our dirt track races.

Up next for us will be the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model show at the Marshalltown Speedway on Tuesday, May 22.  Racing will start a little earlier on that night, 7 p.m. racing.  Then it will be back to our regular Wednesday night home at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa.  Hope you can get out and attend a show at some track near (or far) from you and support the sport we all love... dirt tracking!  Happy racing!

It's Gustin and Gustin in Victory Lane at Marshalltown

We were back at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night for another night of the dirt track racing we so love.  We were ever so thankful that this week, the strong winds were coming at our backs, instead of in our faces.  The warmer weather also made it great to be able to sit in more comfort to enjoy the races more thoroughly!  The Gustin family enjoyed a quite successful night at the track, taking two firsts and a second, showing just what a dominant racing family this is.  Also got to meet a young up and comer in the Nascar  K & N Series--more on that later.

It was veteran racer Merv Chandler taking another of his many victories in the IMCA Sport Compact class.
Dave Moorman led early, but Chandler soon claimed the lead, never to relinquish it.  Moorman finished in second, with John Gill in third, fourth was Duane Herb and John Walker was fifth.

The Mod Lite 15-lap feature found the 99 car of Josh May in victory lane for the second time this year.  May, who started back in the fifth row, took the lead with five laps remaining in the contest.  Last week's winner, Mike Morrill, followed May through the field to capture second.  Third was Andy Hennigar, fourth went to Randy Bryan and Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.  The race ended after two green-white-checkered attempts, making for one of those "bonus lap" races.

Jenae Gustin found her way back to the winner's circle for the second time this year, in the IMCA Northern SportMod division.  Gustin showed the boys how it's done, cruising to a dominate win.  Racer Hulin had to fight his way through the pack from starting back in eleventh place, to take a distant second.  Jared VanDeest took the third spot, followed by Joel Rust and Scott Davis in fourth and fifth.

The 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock was a hard fought battle between Eric Stanton, Scott Pippert and Gary Pfantz.  It appeared that Pippert had nosed into the lead with three laps to go, but Stanton battled back in the final circuits and took the checkers first.  Pippert had to settle for the runner up position on this night, and Pfantz third.  Kevin Fee took fourth place, followed by last week's winner, Donovan Nunnikhoven in fifth.

The IMCA Stock Car class always seems to be exciting where ever we go.  It was just that at Marshalltown last night.  The two cars putting on the show up front last night were Trent Murphy and Jay Schmidt.  Murphy held down the lead from lap two, but Schmidt then put his car to the topside---the only car attempting it---and slowly and methodically, caught up to the leader.  Once again, two green-white-checkered situations occurred, and again, bonus laps.  Schmidt had  just nosed ahead of Murphy at the first attempt at the green-white-checkered and would fend off Murphy's challenges to the eventual finish.  Following Schmidt in first, and Murphy in second, were Steve Meyer, Damon Murty, and Tracy Gienger; third through fifth.

In the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, it was Richie Gustin wasting no time in putting his 19G to the lead. Gustin went from his second row starting spot, to the lead before lap one, passing rookie Kyle Brown, the pole sitter.  Luke Wanninger then made the pass on Brown to take over the runner up position.  Meanwhile, Gustin was on cruise control, pulling away from the field.  There was however, another Gustin flying through the pack of cars--Jimmy Gustin was now on Wanninger's tail.  At the finish, Richie Gustin took the easy win and Jimmy Gustin nipped Wanninger for second.  Wanninger held third over Kyle Brown in fourth, and Cayden Carter, finished fifth.

Tonight was a good night for a car with the #19 on it it.  Jenea Gustin won the SportMod feature in her 19J, Jay Schmidt taking his Stock Car to a win in his 19J, and Richie Gustin winning in his 19G in the Modified feature, followed by Jimmy Gustin for second in his car 19.

I mentioned earlier about meeting a young man who will be competing on Saturday at the Iowa Speedway in the K & N Nascar Series.  Blake Anderson, former announcer at the Marshalltown Speedway, then who  dove into a couple of other stints, one announcing for USAC, and now finds himself back at the Knoxville Raceway announcing for their Saturday night racing, brought along a racer friend.  Nineteen year old Kyle Larson from California has had great success in several Sprint classes, and is now racing full time in the Nascar K & N Series.  He is a developmental driver for Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing.  He was third in this year's Chili Bowl and in 2011, swept the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway--winning the Silver Crowns, Sprint Cars, and Midgets, all in one night!  Pretty impressive resume and you can check it out further at http://hometracks.nascar.com/driver/nknps_east/kyle_larson. Thanks Blake for bringing this young man into the grandstand so we could meet him.  We were also happy to have Blake's dad Steve, join us for a night of enjoyment at the Marshalltown Speedway.

Next up for action at Marshalltown, will be the IMCA Deery Brothers show on Tuesday, May 22nd. Joining Late Models will be the IMCA Northern SportMods, the Mod Lites and the Dirt Trucks.  Then it will be back on Friday night, May 25, for another regular night of racing.  For more information you can check www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Happy racing!

It's VanBuskirk in the Winner's Circle at Osky

The Southern Iowa Speedway held an IMCA SportMod special on Wednesday night to go along with the other regular classes of cars.   It was a draw/redraw format for the SportMods, with $500 going to the winner.  A new face appeared in victory lane in that class, all other divisions seeing repeat winners. A stock car King of the Hill race was also on tap to entertain the fans, and the youngsters got to scramble for candy on the front stretch for their added enjoyment. All added up to a fun night at the races at the famed Monster Half Mile.

Veteran Merv Chandler took another of his many victories over the years, in the IMCA Sport Compact class. This time, he did it in his asphalt car.  That set up didn't seem to slow him down one bit, as he cruised home to the checkers.  John Whalen closed in on the leader, but was only able to muster a second place finish. Last week's winner Bill Whalen, Jr. took third, fourth went to Larry Hopkins, and newcomer for the night, Steve Williams, Jr. completed the five car field.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks saw the familiar face of Shannon Anderson taking another win.  Starting in tenth position hardly deterred Anderson as he was up to second by lap three and leading by lap five.  Hartford, Iowa's Eric Stanton overcame a slip up earlier, to chase Anderson to the checkers in second place.  John Watson finished third, followed by Kevin Fee and Danny Thrasher in fourth and fifth.

The IMCA Modifieds ran their 15-lap A main flag-to-flag.  Cayden Carter caught leader Brandon Banks by the halfway mark of the race, and would go on to score his third feature win at the track this year.  Greg Cox finished in third ahead of Shane Weller, Jeff Conner and Doug Pratt; as they finished fourth through sixth. The 12H of Dakota Hayden smacked the wall and was unable to finish the feature.

The IMCA Stock Cars competed in a King of the Hill contest earlier in the evening.  The top 4 finishers of the two heats were pitted against each other.  The final two standing after elimination rounds were Colt Mather and Damon Murty.  Murty took his 99D to the "top of the hill" and was crowned the winner, taking home an extra $100 on the night.

The 16-lap stock car feature also went to Damon Murty.  Murty, who started back in 8th spot, held off the challenges of Matt Greiner, who took the runner up spot, third went to Todd Reitzler, fourth was Nathan Wood and Todd Fisher rounded out the top five.   Murty had a perfect night, having won his heat, the King of the Hill and then the feature.

There was a special format for the IMCA Northern SportMod's featured 20-lap event.  At halfway, the cars were stopped on the front stretch and they were allowed to change one tire only, but make any other changes they wanted.  At the halfway mark, Scott VanBuskirk was at the helm with Race Hulin and Curtis VanDerWal trailing him.  VanDerWal slipped by Hulin for second place and the challenge between VanBuskirk and VanDerWal was on.  The lead swapped several times in the last handful of laps, VanBuskirk taking the lead with a lap to go and holding it for the win.  Racer Hulin held third place behind VanDerWal's second place finish, fourth went to Brett Lowry and fifth was Jenae Gustin.

Track manager, Mike VanGenderen was out on the track all evening, watering the track in an attempt to keep the dust down that appeared  going into turn one during hot laps.  The water truck was used in that first instance, which helped tremendously.  However, scattered spots on the front stretch kept rearing their ugly heads--those being "bucket watered" throughout the night. Though this method does appear a bit odd, it seems to work, as was proven earlier in the season.  Break out at least a five-gallon bucket though, Mike!

Positively Racing was well represented again last night with fellow bloggers Ryan Clark, Eric Arnold, and Kevin Trittien in attendance.  Be sure and check their take of the night's events at www.positivelyracing.com as well.  Everyone sees the races differently, so their prospective may be different. We all agreed however, it was a great night of racing.

Next week at the Southern Iowa Speedway will be another weekly points night with IMCA sanctioned racing in all classes.  Hot laps are 7, with racing at 7:30.  Be sure and check www.oskyspeedway.com for additional information, schedule and results and point standings.  Happy racing!

Watson Pulls Away to Another Win at Boone

Week three of regular season racing is in the books for the Boone Speedway as of Saturday night.  There were 145 cars checked into the pits on this Mother's Day weekend where the mothers in the grandstands were handed a red carnation.  The kids got their special treat at the end of the night as they were able to hop into a hobby stock and take a spin around the track.  Earlier, it was Happy Hour with $1 beer from 6-7 p.m.  Now with all of those "specials" during the night, there was one really unusual incident right before the racing got underway.  There was a "possum roundup" in the infield.  The critter appeared in the infield just as the final  grooming of the track was taking place and before the playing of the National Anthem.  We have never seen a possum move so quickly as it scurried haplessly around in the infield---no where to hide! Finally, with the help of two 4-wheel wranglers, the little animal was herded up and over the berm, and is probably still in hiding today! We can now add possum to our list of animals we've seen running around on a racetrack--deer, dog, cat, rabbit and wild turkey!

The Mod Lites ran their usual 15-lap feature.  Bryan Zehm, after having to settle for second last week, led the entire race and got the win this week.  Joel Keenan got into the runner up spot early and chased the leader but was unable to make any real threat, and settled for second.  Third went  Randy Bryan, fourth to the winner's father, Ed Zehm, and Andy Hennigar came from the last row to take fifth.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran a B main to complete their feature starting line up.  Cole Ferguson who made the trip over from Dexter, Iowa, took that consolation win.  Brian Miller would lead the entire feature race, surviving more than a couple of restart situations caused by cars spinning all over the track.  By this time, the track had become dry slick, and many drivers evidently were not accustom to those conditions!  Miller would take his first win of the season at Boone as Scott Davis finished right behind him for second, Randy Roberts was third, Eric Elliott fourth and Jerry Hinton fifth.

Earlier in the evening after the SportMod class had completed their heat races, there was a special King of the Hill event.  Drivers finishing first and second in their heat events went up against each other.  It was appearing that the final two cars going head to head for the win would be Scott Davis and Eric Elliott.  However, Elliott was at first waved off of the track and we understood it was because he was told he jumped the start against his earlier opponent.  It was eventually determined, since they were told when to go on the raceceivers, that was not the case...he went when told, the opponent did not go.  The final go around between Davis and Elliott ended with Elliott the victor...and $500 richer.  The contest was sponsored by Harris Auto Racing---just down the road.

The 20-lap IMCA Modified ended up being a runaway win for Jimmy Gustin after he grabbed the lead with  but a handful of laps remaining.  Until that time, Jon Snyder had maintained the lead but the topside became his nemesis when he slid high in turn four, allowing Gustin to slip by. In the final couple laps, Gustin pulled away to a sizable lead, scoring his first win this year at Boone.  Snyder, finished second, distancing himself from third place finisher Denny Rosenberg. Fourth went to Russ Dickerson and the Flying Dutchman, Mike VanGenderen was fifth.

Jay Schmidt took command of the lead with but a handful of laps down in the IMCA Stock Car 18-lap A main. Cory Bushnell ran second to Schmidt, and at the finish, made it close, but second was it for him.
Third went to Wayne Gifford, Donavon Smith came from row nine to finish fourth, and Alan VanGorp put his ride topside to finish fifth.

There was a quick ride along for the kids in the hobby stocks prior to their main.  John Watson came from row five to take over the helm of the 12-lap feature at lap five.  The driver who has had much success at the Boone Speedway, would then go on to take another feature win---pulling away from his nearest competitor, Cory Adams who ran second.  Eric Stanton took third after starting twelfth, Austin Luellen finished fourth, and Aaron Rudolph took fifth.

Next Saturday night, May 19 will be a "Super Saver" night.  You can purchase four grandstand tickets, get a hot dog and Pepsi, all for $30 until 6:30.  Grandstands open at 6, hot laps 6:45 and racing at 7:30.  Check www.raceboone.com for more information about Boone Speedway. Happy racing!

Osky Wins go to Murray, Weyer, Wood, Nunnikhoven and Whalen

After a week off for wet grounds, the Southern Iowa Speedway sprung to life again on Wednesday night.  This week saw several new drivers in attendance to try their hand at taming the Monster Half-Mile.  Four of the five classes had new winners and a fun little contest was thrown in to the amusement of the fans.

The IMCA Sport Compact class had several new drivers in the field of eight cars.  Bill Whalen, Jr. took the lead from the start and never relinquished it, taking his first win at the track.  Merv Chandler followed Whalen to claim the runner up spot.  Third through fifth went to all new drivers.  Kassidy Kirkpatrick was third, fourth went to Cody Thompson, and fifth to Kevin Kirkpatrick.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran their feature flag-to-flag.  Des Moines, Iowa's Bryon Weyer took command at the drop of the green.  Bill Gibson put his #38 into the second spot, only to be overtaken by Jesse Sobbing.  Sobbing came from tenth spot to put his ride into second, but ran out of time to make it any real challenge for the lead.  Weyer took the win with Sobbing the runner up and Gibson was third.  Fourth went to young Brayton Carter and Tony Johnson rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Modifieds ran a 15-lap feature.  Mark Widmar took the lead from the get go, but he had company! Cayden Carter and Brandon Banks tucked in behind Widmar and gave chase.  The intense racing involving those three drivers ended when Widmar and Carter got together at the top of turns three and four on lap twelve.  Both drivers were forced to exit the track, cars too damaged to continue.  The restart found Hartford, Iowa driver, Jacob Murray in the lead on the restart, and one he would hold to the checkers.  Following Murray in second was Brandon Banks, third was Shane Weller, fourth Jeff Streeter and fifth to brother Steve Streeter.

The IMCA Stock Cars ran 15 laps for their A main.  Kyle Harwood wasted little time in getting the lead.  The racing action was short-lived as a tranny let loose at the top of turns three and four providing a spectacular fire ball.  A new driver on the night, Michael Bilyeu driving a #46B car was the unlucky one in that situation.  When action continued, Harwood maintained his lead, but there was a big battle brewing behind him.  Racing was close and intense among Rich Vogt, Matt Greiner, Corey Stout, Nathan Wood, and Colt Mather.  When things got sorted out a bit behind Harwood, it was the #8 car of Colt Mather that fought through the masses to take over the second spot.  On the final lap, Mather made the pass and took the lead, taking the checkers first.  Nathan Wood chased Mather across the finish line to be scored in second.
Harwood was third, Vogt  fourth, Stout fifth and Greiner sixth.  However, a post-race inspection in the tech area disqualified Mather with illegal stud girdles.  This would hand the win over to Wood and move all of the other finishing cars up a position as well.

The finale of the night was 14-laps of IMCA Hobby Stock racing.  Donovan Nunnikhoven was leading by lap two after passing Bill Bonnett. Nunnikhoven was never really challenged from there on, sailing home to the win, his second of the season at Osky.  Craig Brown finished in second with John Watson, Kevin Fee and Bill Bonnett being credited with third through fifth.

Earlier in the evening, after heat racing was completed, a fun contest was held involving the top two in points in each class.  Those drivers were brought across the track and each handed a tee shirt....a FROZEN solid tee shirt.  It was their challenge to get it thawed enough to get it on.  Shannon Anderson was the first to succeed followed by John Watson, Shane Weller and Jesse Sobbing.  Those four drivers were awarded free pit passes.

Next Wednesday night, May 16 at the Southern Iowa Speedway will be a SportMod Special with $500 to win and a draw/redraw format. For complete official results and additional information, check www.oskyspeedway.com.  Happy racing!

It's Waterman's Night at Hawkeye Dirt Tour in Vinton

The kick off for the JR Motorsports IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour for 2012 got off to a great start on Tuesday night at the Benton County Speedway. There were 38 IMCA modifieds on hand with the IMCA Northern SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts supporting them.

Merv Chandler continued his winning way, as he took another feature win in the IMCA Sport Compact class.  Son Nathan Chandler was a distant runner up, Andy Wagener was third, followed by Tyler Whalen in fourth and the 007 car of Adam Gates in fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks ran a 15-lap A main. After a couple of  "no-start" situations caused by spinning cars, and another couple of early yellow flags and resulting restarts, things went more smoothly.  Scott Pippert led from lap one and sailed home to the win.  Des Moines driver, John Watson got to second place early but was never able to reel in the leader, finishing in second.  Third went to Doug Laughridge, fourth was Matt Brown and Brad Forbes rounded out the top five.

Jim Gillenwater made the haul up from Keokuk, Iowa to try his hand at the Benton County Speedway in the IMCA SportMod class.  In just his first ever time at the track, Gillenwater made it a successful night as he scored the win ahead of Laurel, Iowa's Racer Hulin.  Hulin chased Gillenwater most of the race in a futile attempt to run him down. It was appearing that Austin Kaplan was going to take the third place position, but coming out of turn four, he was suddenly off power and coasted across the finish line to hold on for fifth.
Scott Davis and Carter VanDenBerg passed Kaplan at the finish--placing third and fourth in that order.

Thirty laps lay ahead for the IMCA Modifieds for the HDT main event.  The top ten qualifiers through the five heat races, drew for their starting positions.  The lucky drivers winning the front row were Jeff Waterman and Ryan Dolan.  Waterman, from Quincy, Illinois, would never relinquish the top spot, despite several caution flags waving during the race.  Richie Gustin  and JD Auringer ran second and third the last half of the race, Auringer making the pass on Gustin in the waning laps.  Auringer took second over Gustin in third and Mitch Morris, Long Grove, Iowa, was fourth and Mark Schulte was fifth.

The show moved right along last night, always appreciated by the fans, and ended at 9:43 p.m. Bucky Doren, tour director, is off to a great start once again.  It was back to chilly, breezy weather and fans were breaking out the winter wear, and glad to have it.  We've learned to just keep the coats and blankets in the vehicle as we've had to use them even in July in Iowa.  It was an enjoyable racing program last night, shared with racing friends and fellow PR bloggers.  Speaking of fellow PR bloggers, we certainly enjoyed the great mic work of Ryan Clark, giving a great call of the races and getting the line ups out to us fanatics!  Be sure and take a look at "In Staging" and "Back Stretch" for their take of the night's action.  "Tapfan's Tours" was also on hand, but still has a down and out computer awaiting a fix.  You can find the official results at www.dirttour.com as well as the schedule and other information concerning this great series.  Happy racing!

Snyder and Roberts take wins flag-to-flag

It was finally a pleasant night to sit and watch racing at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night.  We heard many comment that this was more like it!  The track was fast and watching two features, the IMCA modified and the IMCA Northern SportMods, go caution free in intense racing, was crowd pleasing.

The Mod Lites ran their 15-lap A main first.  A red flag waved off the start of the race when the 19 car of Brad Melton took a tumble off the track.  The driver was okay.  A complete restart then resulted, and pole sitter Bryan Zehm took advantage and pulled away.  A yellow at a handful of laps down, didn't deter his determination as he continued to lead.  However, twelfth place starter, Mike Morrill was coming through the field quickly and was soon on the leaders tail.  Morrill took the lead on lap eleven and would then sail on to the win.  Zehm had to settle for the runner up spot, Mike Kennedy was third, fourth went to Josh May and Joel Keenan finished fifth.

The IMCA Northern SportMods brought 34 drivers to test their skills.  A B main was needed to whittle the starting feature to 24 cars.  That consy race was won by veteran Scott Davis.  Jerry Hinton led briefly at the start but Randy Roberts took over by lap three.  Hinton tailed Roberts the rest of the way but further back in the field, a pack of cars were battling it out for positions 3-4 wide.  It finally got sorted out and it ended with Cody Hennings taking third behind the winner Roberts and Hinton in second.  Fourth was Clint Luellen and fifth, Nick Roberts.  The race went caution free.

The IMCA modifieds was a "hold your breath" race, as the racing up front was intense.  Jon Snyder took the lead immediately from starting outside front row.  By lap seven, Mike VanGenderen had made it into the second position, from starting in row three.  From then on, it was a battle for the lead between those two.  The lead was swapping back and forth in the final five laps, the racing intense, but clean.  It's always great to see a race like that when the two drivers go at it!  No doubt, it was fun for them as well.  Snyder was able to hold off VanGenderen, taking the close fought win.  Following runner up VanGenderen was Jimmy Gustin in third, after starting twelfth, fourth went to Josh Gilman and Russ Dickerson rounded out the top five. The race went flag to flag.

The IMCA stock cars didn't quite make it caution free for their 18-lap event, but with only one yellow flag flying, it was a near miss.  Several cars got caught up in that yellow flag situation at lap nine, piling up at the bottom of turn one. On the restart, Jerry Gifford continued where he had left off, in command of the lead.  Gifford took the win, followed by Robert Stofer in the runner up spot, Wayne Gifford was third, fourth went to Trent Murphy, and Jay Schmidt tallied fifth.

The IMCA hobby stocks turned out to be a two car race.  Austin Luellen would lead the entire race with John Watson tagged firmly on his rear bumper.  With Watson's success at the track, many were thinking he was just waiting for the time to swing past Luellen for the win, but on this night, it wasn't to be.  Luellen drove a smooth, unwavering race and took the checkers.  Brandon Brinton was third, followed by Aaron Rudolph and Matt McDonald in fourth and fifth.

A good field of 150 cars was on hand for the evening.  The Flying Hall Brothers even made their annual appearance to "test and tune"....same cars as usual, which must be at least three or four decades old.  A few cars from the Algona area came to play last night as well, since that track had to chalk up another rain out.  Next week the Boone Speedway has a "Mother's Day Special" listed and race car rides for the kids.  Hot laps are 6:45 and races at 7:30.   Last night's program was completed right at 10:30.
