Week three of regular season racing is in the books for the Boone Speedway as of Saturday night. There were 145 cars checked into the pits on this Mother's Day weekend where the mothers in the grandstands were handed a red carnation. The kids got their special treat at the end of the night as they were able to hop into a hobby stock and take a spin around the track. Earlier, it was Happy Hour with $1 beer from 6-7 p.m. Now with all of those "specials" during the night, there was one really unusual incident right before the racing got underway. There was a "possum roundup" in the infield. The critter appeared in the infield just as the final grooming of the track was taking place and before the playing of the National Anthem. We have never seen a possum move so quickly as it scurried haplessly around in the infield---no where to hide! Finally, with the help of two 4-wheel wranglers, the little animal was herded up and over the berm, and is probably still in hiding today! We can now add possum to our list of animals we've seen running around on a racetrack--deer, dog, cat, rabbit and wild turkey!
The Mod Lites ran their usual 15-lap feature. Bryan Zehm, after having to settle for second last week, led the entire race and got the win this week. Joel Keenan got into the runner up spot early and chased the leader but was unable to make any real threat, and settled for second. Third went Randy Bryan, fourth to the winner's father, Ed Zehm, and Andy Hennigar came from the last row to take fifth.
The IMCA Northern SportMods ran a B main to complete their feature starting line up. Cole Ferguson who made the trip over from Dexter, Iowa, took that consolation win. Brian Miller would lead the entire feature race, surviving more than a couple of restart situations caused by cars spinning all over the track. By this time, the track had become dry slick, and many drivers evidently were not accustom to those conditions! Miller would take his first win of the season at Boone as Scott Davis finished right behind him for second, Randy Roberts was third, Eric Elliott fourth and Jerry Hinton fifth.
Earlier in the evening after the SportMod class had completed their heat races, there was a special King of the Hill event. Drivers finishing first and second in their heat events went up against each other. It was appearing that the final two cars going head to head for the win would be Scott Davis and Eric Elliott. However, Elliott was at first waved off of the track and we understood it was because he was told he jumped the start against his earlier opponent. It was eventually determined, since they were told when to go on the raceceivers, that was not the case...he went when told, the opponent did not go. The final go around between Davis and Elliott ended with Elliott the victor...and $500 richer. The contest was sponsored by Harris Auto Racing---just down the road.
The 20-lap IMCA Modified ended up being a runaway win for Jimmy Gustin after he grabbed the lead with but a handful of laps remaining. Until that time, Jon Snyder had maintained the lead but the topside became his nemesis when he slid high in turn four, allowing Gustin to slip by. In the final couple laps, Gustin pulled away to a sizable lead, scoring his first win this year at Boone. Snyder, finished second, distancing himself from third place finisher Denny Rosenberg. Fourth went to Russ Dickerson and the Flying Dutchman, Mike VanGenderen was fifth.
Jay Schmidt took command of the lead with but a handful of laps down in the IMCA Stock Car 18-lap A main. Cory Bushnell ran second to Schmidt, and at the finish, made it close, but second was it for him.
Third went to Wayne Gifford, Donavon Smith came from row nine to finish fourth, and Alan VanGorp put his ride topside to finish fifth.
There was a quick ride along for the kids in the hobby stocks prior to their main. John Watson came from row five to take over the helm of the 12-lap feature at lap five. The driver who has had much success at the Boone Speedway, would then go on to take another feature win---pulling away from his nearest competitor, Cory Adams who ran second. Eric Stanton took third after starting twelfth, Austin Luellen finished fourth, and Aaron Rudolph took fifth.
Next Saturday night, May 19 will be a "Super Saver" night. You can purchase four grandstand tickets, get a hot dog and Pepsi, all for $30 until 6:30. Grandstands open at 6, hot laps 6:45 and racing at 7:30. Check www.raceboone.com for more information about Boone Speedway. Happy racing!
