Osky Wins go to Murray, Weyer, Wood, Nunnikhoven and Whalen

After a week off for wet grounds, the Southern Iowa Speedway sprung to life again on Wednesday night.  This week saw several new drivers in attendance to try their hand at taming the Monster Half-Mile.  Four of the five classes had new winners and a fun little contest was thrown in to the amusement of the fans.

The IMCA Sport Compact class had several new drivers in the field of eight cars.  Bill Whalen, Jr. took the lead from the start and never relinquished it, taking his first win at the track.  Merv Chandler followed Whalen to claim the runner up spot.  Third through fifth went to all new drivers.  Kassidy Kirkpatrick was third, fourth went to Cody Thompson, and fifth to Kevin Kirkpatrick.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran their feature flag-to-flag.  Des Moines, Iowa's Bryon Weyer took command at the drop of the green.  Bill Gibson put his #38 into the second spot, only to be overtaken by Jesse Sobbing.  Sobbing came from tenth spot to put his ride into second, but ran out of time to make it any real challenge for the lead.  Weyer took the win with Sobbing the runner up and Gibson was third.  Fourth went to young Brayton Carter and Tony Johnson rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Modifieds ran a 15-lap feature.  Mark Widmar took the lead from the get go, but he had company! Cayden Carter and Brandon Banks tucked in behind Widmar and gave chase.  The intense racing involving those three drivers ended when Widmar and Carter got together at the top of turns three and four on lap twelve.  Both drivers were forced to exit the track, cars too damaged to continue.  The restart found Hartford, Iowa driver, Jacob Murray in the lead on the restart, and one he would hold to the checkers.  Following Murray in second was Brandon Banks, third was Shane Weller, fourth Jeff Streeter and fifth to brother Steve Streeter.

The IMCA Stock Cars ran 15 laps for their A main.  Kyle Harwood wasted little time in getting the lead.  The racing action was short-lived as a tranny let loose at the top of turns three and four providing a spectacular fire ball.  A new driver on the night, Michael Bilyeu driving a #46B car was the unlucky one in that situation.  When action continued, Harwood maintained his lead, but there was a big battle brewing behind him.  Racing was close and intense among Rich Vogt, Matt Greiner, Corey Stout, Nathan Wood, and Colt Mather.  When things got sorted out a bit behind Harwood, it was the #8 car of Colt Mather that fought through the masses to take over the second spot.  On the final lap, Mather made the pass and took the lead, taking the checkers first.  Nathan Wood chased Mather across the finish line to be scored in second.
Harwood was third, Vogt  fourth, Stout fifth and Greiner sixth.  However, a post-race inspection in the tech area disqualified Mather with illegal stud girdles.  This would hand the win over to Wood and move all of the other finishing cars up a position as well.

The finale of the night was 14-laps of IMCA Hobby Stock racing.  Donovan Nunnikhoven was leading by lap two after passing Bill Bonnett. Nunnikhoven was never really challenged from there on, sailing home to the win, his second of the season at Osky.  Craig Brown finished in second with John Watson, Kevin Fee and Bill Bonnett being credited with third through fifth.

Earlier in the evening, after heat racing was completed, a fun contest was held involving the top two in points in each class.  Those drivers were brought across the track and each handed a tee shirt....a FROZEN solid tee shirt.  It was their challenge to get it thawed enough to get it on.  Shannon Anderson was the first to succeed followed by John Watson, Shane Weller and Jesse Sobbing.  Those four drivers were awarded free pit passes.

Next Wednesday night, May 16 at the Southern Iowa Speedway will be a SportMod Special with $500 to win and a draw/redraw format. For complete official results and additional information, check www.oskyspeedway.com.  Happy racing!
