Logue logs another win at Boone, Sachau, Smith, Pickett and T. Brown take checkers too

We completed out fourth night of racing in a row at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night.  It's not as easy at it use to be!  For the second night in a row, I also counted 112 cars in attendance.  There was a nice crowd on hand to witness the racing on the heavy, tacky track.

Features kicked off with the MADCRA Mod Lite feature.  At the end of the 15 laps, it was Terry Brown taking the win for the second week in a row.  Brown passed Eric Hendrickson at lap five and remained at the helm the rest of the race.  Hendrickson finished second, over Bryan Zehm in third, Charlie Brown in fourth, and Josh May was fifth.

The Northern SportMods ran next in an 18-lap A main.  Last week, Jacob Sachau from Denison ran at Boone for the first time, after tracks in his area were rained out.  He sat on the pole for the feature and led the troops through the entire 18 laps on the way to the victory.  Randy Roberts and Jake McBirnie went at it for second and third, Roberts winning out at the line for the runner up spot, McBirnie going third.  Fourth was another driver from the western portion of the state who came for the first time last week, Evan Nemitz. He finished fourth ahead of Tim Love in fifth.

The 12-lap Hobby Stock feature had lots of action as several cars jockeyed for position.  Troy Phillips led the charge as the race began, but had lots of company behind him very quickly.  A yellow flew at lap eight for a car sitting backward on the frontstretch facing the approaching leaders.  Phillips still held down the point position, but by this time he had Tyler Pickett to contend with as well as other heavy hitters waiting in the wings.  Pickett wasted no time in taking over the lead, grabbing it before the next lap was scored.  Shannon Anderson followed suite and came along to take the runner up spot.  The final two laps were a close battle between the top two cars, but Pickett held off Anderson at the finish, Pickett getting the win, Anderson having to be satisfied with second.  Dave Rieks in the 78XX had a good run and battled hard with the front runners, getting around Phillips in the closing moments, as they went third and fourth.  Another of the THREE #78 cars, the 78B of Andrew Burg, (it seems they are always running in close contention at Boone....a scorers nightmare!) rounded out the top five.  Pickett won for the third time this year at Boone.

John Logue "logged" another win at Boone in the Modified 20-lap feature.  He took over the lead at lap nine from Jake Durbin.  Durbin, who had led from the first lap, fell to second and then shortly exited the race with apparent mechanical issues.  Logue, who had started fifth, pulled a comfortable distance away from the battle going on behind him.  Those cars were Shay Woods, Mike VanGenderen, Jimmy Gustin and Russ Dickerson.  VanGenderen put it to the top shelf and made it work with three laps remaining.  Logue scored the comfortable win, VanGenderen taking the runner up spot and Woods took third.  Jimmy Gustin held off Dickerson as they finished fourth and fifth in that order.  Logue now has three wins at Boone this season.  After taking a couple of years off, it seems Logue has not lost his touch behind the wheel.

The Stock Cars put on their usual exciting 18-lap feature race.  Veteran Larry Crocheck led the opening laps, but Donavon Smith took over at lap three after starting eighth.  Smith stretched out his lead and took a comfortable win at the checkers---his third of the year.  Trent Murphy fought through traffic from his twelfth place starting spot, and finished in second.  The Gifford brothers, Jerry and Wayne duked it out for third and fourth, Jerry getting the upper hand on this night, taking third over Wayne in fourth.  The hard charger of the night had to be point leader Jay Schmidt.  Schmidt did not have a good run in his heat race earlier, and had to start the feature back in seventeenth.  He put his "Black Betty" ride to the topside and finished an impressive fifth.

It was another damp, overcast night.  Temps were comfortable, but the conditions kept the track heavy and tacky all night long.  It was to some's liking, not so much to others.  As the season winds down, the point's race is tightening up.  You can find the point standings at www.raceboone.com as well as the full results and much, much more.

Thanks for reading and happy racing!
