Osky Stock Car Shoot Out - Night 1 and Mother Nature

The Stock Car Shoot Out is a race we always look forward to every year at the Southern Iowa Speedway. The day had dawned overcast and chilly, but NO RAIN!  Well---scratch that for no rain!  We drove in mist most of the way to the track, but just as we hit the edge of Oskaloosa, the pavement was soaked!  There were just a few sprinkles falling as we entered the grandstand, to see a pretty muddy racetrack before us.  Mike VanGenderen and crew got busy and began the task of packing in the track.  Just as the track was ready to go, here came another shower!  Not to be defeated, the crew got back at it and the packing began....all over again.  By the end of the night, Mother Natures watering had made for a tacky, fast track that produced some excellent racing.  There was a nice crowd on hand and even with the rain delays and late starting, surprisingly patient.

Only the Modifieds and the SportMods ran features last night.  The Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts all ran two heats.  They were awarded points by where they finished in each of the two heats, and at the end of the evening,  those with eight of the fewest points, were locked in to tonight's finales.

The 14-lap Northern SportMod Feature was a runaway!  After an initial no go, the race went caution free.
Jason Hall led the troops through the first four laps, but Brett Lowry was hot on his tail.  Lowry peeked to the inside of Hall as lap four was scored, and then took command shortly thereafter.  From there on, Lowry sailed off in the lead, taking the win by over a straightaway.  Second went to Carter VanDenBerg who came from mid-pack, Hall finished third, Charlie Weber took fourth and Brayton Carter rounded out the top five. Lowry took his second win of the year. The SportMods will have another complete show on Night #2 of the Stock Car Shoot Out.

The 14-lap Modified feature found Andrew "The Kool Aid Kid" Schroeder take the win for the third time in a row.  Schroeder got to the lead by lap three and motored off from the field.  A caution at lap twelve, was no hindrance, as he pulled away on the restart and took the win by a comfortable margin.  AJ Johnson had a good run and finished as the runner up.  Third place went to Jeff Mueller who came up from New London, Iowa for a little fun, fourth was Cayden Carter and Dakota Hayden was fifth.  The Modifieds will not be on the ticket for Night #2 of the Stock Car Shoot Out.

Qualifying for the Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts came from running two heat races.....the second heat race, they started inverted from the first heat.  We noted that they did not run against the SAME drivers as their first heat, so not quite sure how it was determined, but they did start inverted from where they began heat #1.  Those with the lowest number of points (1 point for first, 2 points for second, etc.) after the second heat determined the top 8 that were locked in to tonight's features.  The following drivers are qualified for the Shoot Out features tonight, and they will run a Dash to determine their starting position.

Stock Car: 33Z Zack VanderBeek, 94 Corey Stout, 14 Derrick Agee, 99D Damon Murty, 93 Doug Adamy, 47 Scott Pippert, 6J Brandon Jay, and 10CC Cayden Carter

Hobby Stock:  78 Shannon Anderson, 10G Dustin Griffiths, 84 Danny Thrasher, 4W John Watson, 69 Craig Brown, 7B Eric Stanton, 11 Mike Hughes, and 79S Jason See

Sport Compact:  22C Nathan Chandler, 00 Shaun Slaughter, 14L Brandon Lambert, 21CZ Cody Cleghorn, 27 Kassidy Kirkpatrick, 007 Adam Gates, 33 Nick VanHemert,, and 00W Bill Whalen, Jr.

Qualifying continues tonight with two heat races for the Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Sport Compacts....lined up by the points they have already accumulated and any new cars having to tag.  Today, the sun is shining!!  A welcome sight and temps warmer.  Let's hope Mother Nature has gotten the message, don't mess with Osky!  As noted earlier, the SportMods will have another complete show, but there will be no Modifieds.  There is $2,000 on the line to the winner of the Stock Car feature, $1,000 to second place, the Hobby Stocks are running for a $1,000 payday and the Sport Compacts will be racing in the Inaugural Merv Chandler Memorial race and will pay $700 to the winner and $100 to start.

Thanks for reading, and happy racing!
