Logue logs another win at Boone, Sachau, Smith, Pickett and T. Brown take checkers too

We completed out fourth night of racing in a row at the Boone Speedway on Saturday night.  It's not as easy at it use to be!  For the second night in a row, I also counted 112 cars in attendance.  There was a nice crowd on hand to witness the racing on the heavy, tacky track.

Features kicked off with the MADCRA Mod Lite feature.  At the end of the 15 laps, it was Terry Brown taking the win for the second week in a row.  Brown passed Eric Hendrickson at lap five and remained at the helm the rest of the race.  Hendrickson finished second, over Bryan Zehm in third, Charlie Brown in fourth, and Josh May was fifth.

The Northern SportMods ran next in an 18-lap A main.  Last week, Jacob Sachau from Denison ran at Boone for the first time, after tracks in his area were rained out.  He sat on the pole for the feature and led the troops through the entire 18 laps on the way to the victory.  Randy Roberts and Jake McBirnie went at it for second and third, Roberts winning out at the line for the runner up spot, McBirnie going third.  Fourth was another driver from the western portion of the state who came for the first time last week, Evan Nemitz. He finished fourth ahead of Tim Love in fifth.

The 12-lap Hobby Stock feature had lots of action as several cars jockeyed for position.  Troy Phillips led the charge as the race began, but had lots of company behind him very quickly.  A yellow flew at lap eight for a car sitting backward on the frontstretch facing the approaching leaders.  Phillips still held down the point position, but by this time he had Tyler Pickett to contend with as well as other heavy hitters waiting in the wings.  Pickett wasted no time in taking over the lead, grabbing it before the next lap was scored.  Shannon Anderson followed suite and came along to take the runner up spot.  The final two laps were a close battle between the top two cars, but Pickett held off Anderson at the finish, Pickett getting the win, Anderson having to be satisfied with second.  Dave Rieks in the 78XX had a good run and battled hard with the front runners, getting around Phillips in the closing moments, as they went third and fourth.  Another of the THREE #78 cars, the 78B of Andrew Burg, (it seems they are always running in close contention at Boone....a scorers nightmare!) rounded out the top five.  Pickett won for the third time this year at Boone.

John Logue "logged" another win at Boone in the Modified 20-lap feature.  He took over the lead at lap nine from Jake Durbin.  Durbin, who had led from the first lap, fell to second and then shortly exited the race with apparent mechanical issues.  Logue, who had started fifth, pulled a comfortable distance away from the battle going on behind him.  Those cars were Shay Woods, Mike VanGenderen, Jimmy Gustin and Russ Dickerson.  VanGenderen put it to the top shelf and made it work with three laps remaining.  Logue scored the comfortable win, VanGenderen taking the runner up spot and Woods took third.  Jimmy Gustin held off Dickerson as they finished fourth and fifth in that order.  Logue now has three wins at Boone this season.  After taking a couple of years off, it seems Logue has not lost his touch behind the wheel.

The Stock Cars put on their usual exciting 18-lap feature race.  Veteran Larry Crocheck led the opening laps, but Donavon Smith took over at lap three after starting eighth.  Smith stretched out his lead and took a comfortable win at the checkers---his third of the year.  Trent Murphy fought through traffic from his twelfth place starting spot, and finished in second.  The Gifford brothers, Jerry and Wayne duked it out for third and fourth, Jerry getting the upper hand on this night, taking third over Wayne in fourth.  The hard charger of the night had to be point leader Jay Schmidt.  Schmidt did not have a good run in his heat race earlier, and had to start the feature back in seventeenth.  He put his "Black Betty" ride to the topside and finished an impressive fifth.

It was another damp, overcast night.  Temps were comfortable, but the conditions kept the track heavy and tacky all night long.  It was to some's liking, not so much to others.  As the season winds down, the point's race is tightening up.  You can find the point standings at www.raceboone.com as well as the full results and much, much more.

Thanks for reading and happy racing!

Atcher wins 4th of July, 50th Anniversary Celebration at Marshalltown

The stands were packed on Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway.  It was not only their 50th Anniversary celebration, but $5 admission to the races and fireworks to boot!  Over 110 cars packed the pits as well.  It all made for a great night of entertainment.

Dave Moorman won the Sport Compact feature for the second week in a row.  He led the entire eight lap feature on his way to win #5 on the year.  John Gill was the runner up, new comer Zach Brenner in the #33B was third, and Alec Gill in the #00 was fourth.  Aaron Miller was not able to start the feature.

Eric Hendrickson led the troops in the 15-lap Mod Lite feature through lap eleven.  That's when Charlie Brown, who had been knocking on the door the entire time, edged under Hendrickson on the backstretch, and was scored the leader at lap twelve.  From there on, Brown continued his ride at the helm, and took the checkers and the victory.  James May had been pursuing the leaders much of the race and slipped by Hendrickson as well in the closing laps as they went second and third respectively.  Mike Morrill started alongside winner Brown in row four, and finished fourth and tenth place starter Josh May, rounded out the top five.  Charlie Brown banked his fourth win of the year at Marshalltown and took over the point lead.

The Hobby Stock feature got off to a fast start with cars immediately in 4-6 wide formation!  Pole starter Clint Nelson was leading at lap one when a yellow flew.  When the race restarted, Eric Stanton had already flown up to second place from starting tenth and wasted no time in taking over the point position as lap two was scored.  Eric Larson had followed Stanton through the pack from starting along side him in row five, and was soon in second and challenging the leader.  The race went caution free the rest of the way to the finish, Stanton taking the win for the second week in a row.  The final lap found "The Mayor" John Watson get around Larson as they finished second and third in that order.  Nathan Ballard, made his first visit to Marshalltown and finished fourth and Justin Lichty completed the top five.  This was Stanton's third win of the year.

The IMCA Northern SportMod feature had a nasty incident in turn four on lap two.  Shawn Ritter, Tracy Wassenberg, who opted to have his car towed down from Wisconsin to race, after working in the area all week, and Gatlin Leytham were involved.  Wassenberg tried to take evasive action when Ritter lost it, and when all was said and done, Wassenberg ended up on top of, evidently Gatlin Leytam as we noted his roof was caved in as they towed him off.  After the carnage was cleared and the race restarted, Ryan Ashton remained in command, Andy Tiernan and Jenae Gustin ready to challenge.  That challenge was immediate as Gustin flew to the lead, Tiernan tagging in second.  Gustin was on her game, as she pulled away, looking to be totally in command of the race.  Then another yellow for a spinning car on lap nine, racked them and stacked them again for a restart.  By this time, Clint Luellen had worked his magic on the topside, and was third from starting tenth.  Luellen did make the move into second when the race got back underway, but Gustin was showing her poise and talent and holding the lead.  Then came fateful lap fourteen when a puff of smoke erupted from Gustin's machine, and her fantastic run was over.  Luellen was handed the lead on the restart, Tiernan right behind.  Luellen and Tiernan continued their run to the checkers.......avoiding a spinning car that pulled out right in front of them as they approached the finish line in turn four, Luellen taking the victory, Tiernan finishing as the runner up.  Tony Olson had a good run in his second appearance at Marshalltown, and scored third place.  Sam Wieben was fourth, and Brett Lowry, in a right side caved in car from an incident, came from starting eleventh, to finish fifth.  Luellen keeps chalking up the victories this year, taking his sixth win at Marshalltown on the season, and I believe his eleventh over all for 2014.  He won back to back at the High Banks.

A nice field of 25 Stock Cars were on hand, all starting the 18-lap A main.  It was a no go on the start, when pole sitter Robert Stofer was off power and pulled into the infield, and Adam Rickett spun in turn one before the first lap was scored.  The restart found Dave Atcher sitting at the point position for the restart.  When things did get underway, Atcher had little trouble in holding on to that lead, until about lap twelve when Donavon Smith came calling.  Smith had been reeling in the leader and when he pushed bad in turn four, the gap was closed even more.  The final laps saw Atcher and Smith in wheel-to-wheel action, but Atcher held him off, and scored the win.  Smith finished as the runner up and adds to his point lead, Trent Murphy was third.  Michael Jaennette was involved in an accident in his heat race, and had to start on the back row, but flew through the field to finish fourth.  Jay Schmidt had his car, "Black Betty" back and ran toward the front all night, and had a fifth place finish.  I was trying to catch the announcer's comments about the last time that Atcher had won at Marshalltown and I believe I understood it to be back in May of 2009 when he won a special, but previous to that, his last season point win at the track came back in 2006!  Atcher brought out his sharp looking car for the first time, just a few weeks ago.

The early portion of the 20-lap Modified feature was between Eric Elliott and Tyler Droste.  At lap seven, Droste spun at the bottom of turns one and two, but kept going.  Several other cars, however, did not.  Elliott, was one of the unfortunate drivers who was not moving when the yellow came out, putting him back at the tail for the restart.  Droste was the leader when things got back underway, Luke Wanninger was up to second and Ronn Lauritzen was riding along in third.  By lap twelve, Wanninger had taken the lead and Laurtizen had made the pass around Droste as well, and was in second.  Wanninger and Lauritzen put on a show in the closing laps as they ran nose to tail with Lauritzen doing everything to find a way around the leader.  It was not to be on this night however, as Wanninger kept the lead to the checkers, scoring the win.  Lauritzen, finished second and strengthens his track point lead.  Droste held on to finish third, Tony Snyder from Redlyn made a first time appearance, and finished fourth.  Joel Rust, rookie in the Modified class, rounded out the top five.  Wanninger scored back-to-back victories---his fourth of the season plus also winning the pre-season Frostbuster.

The Marshalltown Speedway was celebrating their 50th year of racing last night.  On hand were several drivers from some of those earlier years.  Dale DeFrance, one of the famous DeFrance racing family was on hand.  Ben Schroyer was there as well, the driver who won that first race at the track back on August 17, 1964.  Bob Malechek, a Marshalltown native who raced the High Banks of Marshalltown, came back from I believe Texas, for the reunion.  Bob Bonzer, who raced out of Liscomb back in the 60's and 70's also made an appearance before the packed grandstand as former track announcer Denny Grabenbauer introduced the honored guests.  Three other former drivers were also in attendance---Chuck Anderson, Doug Smith and Tommy Thompson.  The latter two being of the most recent active drivers, now retired.

Some other notes on the evening---- It was nice to see the #59 Stock  Car on the track again.  Tracy Gienger raced for the first time this year.  He was heard to say that the car was just sitting in the garage, ready to go, so thought if he brought it out and had fun....so be it.  He hasn't lost his touch as he finished second in his heat and finished seventh in the feature with his perfect looking machine as we always remember it from the past.

The program was run through as quickly as possible as the city fireworks show was to begin at 9:45.....right there on the backstretch of the track.  All victory lane interviews and pictures were scrapped and each feature brought to the track as soon as one was completed.  The spectators for the fireworks came out in droves!  The parking lot was PACKED and cars were lined on the road to Highway 30 all along the shoulders.  Some people out in the parking lot were curious and walked up to the top of turn one, probably not four feet from the racing surface while the racing was going on.  Evidently they had no sense of how dangerous that situation was nor knew anything about racing.  They were luckily herded away, but were not happy according to promoter Toby Kruse.  If they only realized what a dangerous, dangerous situation that was!

The old announcing team of Denny Grabenbauer and Toby Kruse called much of the racing action last night.  It was nostalgic to hear them---"The Denny and Toby Show"--- on the mic again, feeding quip after quip off of each other.  All in all, it was a great night of racing.

Thanks for reading and happy racing!

VanderBeek and the Orange Crush win Stock Car Shoot Out

Night #2 of the 19th Annual Stock Car Shoot Out ran without a hitch on Thursday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway.  A welcome change from the previous night when Mother Nature threw in a couple of glitches.  The weather was great and the fans came out in abundance to watch the drivers go at it on the Monster Half Mile.

Dashes were run for the eight cars that had qualified the previous night in the Stock Car, Hobby Stock and Sport Compact classes.  Their finishing order determined the starting order of the top eight in the feature. Heats were run for those that still needed to qualify, their finishing order determining their starting spot behind the top eight. Only the Stock Cars had to run a Last Chance race to fill in their starting line up.  Two provisionals were also chosen to tag the field.

The IMCA Northern SportMods ran a complete show.  Their 15-lap A main was determined about as soon as it started.  Curtis VanDerWal started fourth but was leading before the first lap was scored.  He was pulling off from the field when a caution flew at lap nine and again at lap ten, but on the restarts, pulled away.  Ryan Fullenkamp came from row five to finish as the runner up.  Jason McDaniel was third, Brayton Carter fourth and last night's winner, Brett Lowry, was fifth.  Shortly after the tech inspection, it was announced that VanDerWal was disqualified for having an "illegal rev box", giving the win to Fullenkamp.  However, it wasn't much later until another announcement was made saying the disqualification had been overturned by IMCA and VanDerWal's win stood.  This was his fourth win of the season.

It was now time for the Inaugural Merv Chandler Memorial and their 20-lap feature.  Chandler, who suddenly passed away back on March 10 of this year, helped pioneer the IMCA Modified when they were first getting started.  We remember seeing him run those Modifieds and they were always unique in appearance.....you could always spot a Merv Chandler Modified.  When the IMCA Sport Compacts were first brought out, Merv jumped right in and built and raced those with much success.  Merv is the only Sport Compact driver with that track title at the Southern Iowa Speedway.

The starting front row for the feature was Shaun Slaughter and Merv Chandler's son, Nathan Chandler.  The race didn't get off to a good start, especially for Slaughter, as his right rear wheel became a "loose wheel" as he went into turn three, all before the first lap was scored.  Slaughter's night was ended.  Nathan Chandler was now at the helm with Bill Whalen taking a peek on the bottom side for a way around him.  A yellow at lap eight for yet another wheel lost---this one bouncing over the turn one fence--- halted the action.  When the race restarted, it didn't take long for the #22 of Austen Beccera to make the move around Whalen, taking over the runner up spot.  But all he could do from there on, was watch as Nathan Chandler drove the remaining way to the $700 victory.  Beccera took second over Bill Whalen in third, fourth was Brandon Lambert, and Cody Cleghorn completed the top five.  It seems only fitting that Merv's son should win this race, and no doubt Merv was watching and smiling.

The 22-lap Hobby Stock Shoot Out found Shannon Anderson sitting on the pole; Danny Thrasher alongside. This one didn't get off to a good start either as John Watson ended up on his top near the bottom of turn four, before lap one was in the books.  He was not hurt.  The race was restarted, but this time a melee on the frontstretch involving Dale Porter and I believe the #73 of Aaron Martin halted the action again before lap one was scored.  The race DID finally get underway, and to no ones surprise, Shannon Anderson took off in the lead.  What was surprising was what came next as Mike Hughes flew around Anderson effortlessly, leading by lap two!   Anderson knocked on the door several times but never seriously challenged Hughes as he continued the rest of the way to the checkers and the $1,000 win.  Anderson had to be content with the runner up position.  Dustin Griffiths took third, Craig Brown was fourth and Eric Stanton rounded out the top five.  Hughes continues to rack up the wins at the Southern Iowa Speedway, this one sealing his sixth victory of the year.

Now it was time for the headliner of the show....the 25-lap 19th Annual Stock Car Shoot Out.  The earlier dash had determined the front row to be the #14 of Derrick Agee from Moberly, Missouri and the Chelsea Charger, Damon Murty.  Murty held the lead as lap one was scored, only to have Agee snatch it up by the following lap.  Those two battled each other through the first seven laps in that order.  But wait!  What was that orange machine charging hard?  That orange machine was the "Orange Crush" ride of Zack VanderBeek. By lap eight, he had passed Murty to take over second, and passed leader Agee in turns three and four before lap nine was scored.  Murty fought back around Agee taking second place back and was running in that position when the only caution flew with just five laps remaining.  No doubt, this was exactly what Murty was hoping for, VanderBeek, not so much!  Two cars that had really been on the move further back in the pack, were the 10cc of Cayden Carter, piloting the "Team Orange Crush" Roger Kelderman machine, and Brad Pinkerton in the #62.  Carter had started back in row seven and Pinkerton had started in row eight.  Carter and Pinkerton were now running seventh and eighth respectively and they were surely happy to see a chance for a restart too.  Those final five laps had all eyes on the second orange machine of Carter, as he was flying!  He moved into second around Murty with two laps remaining and set his sights on the orange flash ahead of him.  It was to no avail though, as VanderBeek kept his lead to the checkers flying and scored the Stock Car Shoot Out win and the $2,000 payday---and Carter taking the runner up spot.  Murty held on to score third place and earned an extra $200 for finishing in that position, thanks to sponsor Edel's Lawn Care.  Jason Minnehan, from Churdan, was fourth and Derrick Agee finished fifth.  Right behind in sixth place was Brad Pinkerton who also earned an extra $200 on the night for being the hard charger of the night....advancing the most positions courtesy of McFarland Pain Clinic.  Roger Kelderman, owner of the first and second place "Orange Crush Team" cars was a happy camper.  VanderBeek scored his third win at the Monster Half Mile this year.

It was an excellent show last night, run very efficiently and in a timely manner.  The track was a completely different surface from the night before when it was tacky and heavy.  Some had called that track almost too fast.  Tonight, it was what many call a "racer's track", smooth, and dry slick.

The very first Hall of Fame inductees were announced last night.  They will be honored at a Southern Iowa Fair race coming up in July.  They are, Denny Banks, Bill Davis, Sr., Randy Schroeder, the late Aaron Brown, and Bobby Greiner, Jr.  A fitting group of great drivers.  They were voted in by fans through a ballot back on June 18th.

There's a LOT of racing coming up in the near future.  Be sure and check the event calendar on the home page of Positively Racing for a race....or several....to attend.  Help support the sport we all love.

Thanks for reading and happy racing!

Osky Stock Car Shoot Out - Night 1 and Mother Nature

The Stock Car Shoot Out is a race we always look forward to every year at the Southern Iowa Speedway. The day had dawned overcast and chilly, but NO RAIN!  Well---scratch that for no rain!  We drove in mist most of the way to the track, but just as we hit the edge of Oskaloosa, the pavement was soaked!  There were just a few sprinkles falling as we entered the grandstand, to see a pretty muddy racetrack before us.  Mike VanGenderen and crew got busy and began the task of packing in the track.  Just as the track was ready to go, here came another shower!  Not to be defeated, the crew got back at it and the packing began....all over again.  By the end of the night, Mother Natures watering had made for a tacky, fast track that produced some excellent racing.  There was a nice crowd on hand and even with the rain delays and late starting, surprisingly patient.

Only the Modifieds and the SportMods ran features last night.  The Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts all ran two heats.  They were awarded points by where they finished in each of the two heats, and at the end of the evening,  those with eight of the fewest points, were locked in to tonight's finales.

The 14-lap Northern SportMod Feature was a runaway!  After an initial no go, the race went caution free.
Jason Hall led the troops through the first four laps, but Brett Lowry was hot on his tail.  Lowry peeked to the inside of Hall as lap four was scored, and then took command shortly thereafter.  From there on, Lowry sailed off in the lead, taking the win by over a straightaway.  Second went to Carter VanDenBerg who came from mid-pack, Hall finished third, Charlie Weber took fourth and Brayton Carter rounded out the top five. Lowry took his second win of the year. The SportMods will have another complete show on Night #2 of the Stock Car Shoot Out.

The 14-lap Modified feature found Andrew "The Kool Aid Kid" Schroeder take the win for the third time in a row.  Schroeder got to the lead by lap three and motored off from the field.  A caution at lap twelve, was no hindrance, as he pulled away on the restart and took the win by a comfortable margin.  AJ Johnson had a good run and finished as the runner up.  Third place went to Jeff Mueller who came up from New London, Iowa for a little fun, fourth was Cayden Carter and Dakota Hayden was fifth.  The Modifieds will not be on the ticket for Night #2 of the Stock Car Shoot Out.

Qualifying for the Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts came from running two heat races.....the second heat race, they started inverted from the first heat.  We noted that they did not run against the SAME drivers as their first heat, so not quite sure how it was determined, but they did start inverted from where they began heat #1.  Those with the lowest number of points (1 point for first, 2 points for second, etc.) after the second heat determined the top 8 that were locked in to tonight's features.  The following drivers are qualified for the Shoot Out features tonight, and they will run a Dash to determine their starting position.

Stock Car: 33Z Zack VanderBeek, 94 Corey Stout, 14 Derrick Agee, 99D Damon Murty, 93 Doug Adamy, 47 Scott Pippert, 6J Brandon Jay, and 10CC Cayden Carter

Hobby Stock:  78 Shannon Anderson, 10G Dustin Griffiths, 84 Danny Thrasher, 4W John Watson, 69 Craig Brown, 7B Eric Stanton, 11 Mike Hughes, and 79S Jason See

Sport Compact:  22C Nathan Chandler, 00 Shaun Slaughter, 14L Brandon Lambert, 21CZ Cody Cleghorn, 27 Kassidy Kirkpatrick, 007 Adam Gates, 33 Nick VanHemert,, and 00W Bill Whalen, Jr.

Qualifying continues tonight with two heat races for the Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Sport Compacts....lined up by the points they have already accumulated and any new cars having to tag.  Today, the sun is shining!!  A welcome sight and temps warmer.  Let's hope Mother Nature has gotten the message, don't mess with Osky!  As noted earlier, the SportMods will have another complete show, but there will be no Modifieds.  There is $2,000 on the line to the winner of the Stock Car feature, $1,000 to second place, the Hobby Stocks are running for a $1,000 payday and the Sport Compacts will be racing in the Inaugural Merv Chandler Memorial race and will pay $700 to the winner and $100 to start.

Thanks for reading, and happy racing!
