Boone Speedway Avoids the Rain

This past Saturday, with rain all around, it was questionable if Boone would race. However, we should have known better. We have seen time after time when the rain will magically miss Boone Speedway, just like the hole in a donut or as if it has a glass dome over the track. According to the radar we saw, there was rain on three sides of the track but there was never more than a light sprinkle that fell at anytime during the show. The magic of Boone? As we left the track, we ran into rain just 2 miles east and then drove in it all the way home.

The Dwarf/Mod Lites were the first to run their feature with 20 cars; the largest car count yet for them this season. Sixth place starter, Joel Huggins, made quick work of putting his X50 car to the front as he took the lead on lap three. Matthew Goodin fell back a couple of positions after Huggins took the point position away from him. Father-son duo, James and Josh May tried to catch the leader but at the conclusion of the race, they had to settle for second and third respectively, as Huggins took the win. Matthew Goodin held on for fourth place and Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.

The IMCA SportMods had to run a B feature to complete their 24 car starting field. Transferring from the B were Geoff Olson, Nick Roberts, Josh Lopshire, a visitor from Pulaski, which is located in the far southern part of the state near Bloomfield, and Jared Timmerman.
Pole sitter, Dan Wetzel would lead the race through lap twelve, but Scott Davis had his eye set on the win, and overtook Wetzel for the lead. Davis kept that top spot and came home to the checkers first. Tim Love slipped by Wetzel for runner-up place, leaving Wetzel to garner third. Fourth went to another southern Iowa driver, young Cayden Carter, and fifth was Jerry Hinton.

During the modified feature, sprinkles began to fall, but they were so light they did not cause problems with racing or even much bother the fans. Richie Gustin and Joel Bushore sat on the front row and as the green fell, Gustin jumped to the lead with Bushore in pursuit. An incident with just four laps down, involved some cars that were making good headway, including Todd Shute, Denny Pittman and Jimmy Gustin. It would end Pittman's and Gustin's run for the night. When racing resumed, Adam Larson made his way into third as he chased Richie Gustin and Bushore. At the end of the twenty lap feature, it was Richie Gustin for the win, Larson made the pass on Bushore for second as Bushore took third for his best finish of the year. Fourth went to Cale Sponsler for his best run of the year also, and fifth was Luke Wanninger.

The stock car feature had to have it's final three starters determined by a B Main. Those transferring were Cory Bushnell, Ryan Rose in his first appearance of the year, and Butch Bass.
Jerry Gifford and brother Wayne Gifford challenged each other for the lead much of the race. Fighting behind them were Ty Hill, Donavon Smith, and Mike VanGenderen. VanGenderen was lucky to hold on and only drop a spot or two, as contact was made when Dustin Smith made the pass low in turns one and two. As the laps wound down, it became a brother chasing brother race to the finish. Wayne Gifford took the win, Jerry Gifford was second, Donovan Smith captured third and fourth went to brother Dustin Smith. Ty Hill came home in fifth and VanGenderen was sixth.

Two A mains were run by the IMCA hobby stocks. Tyer Pickett led the first race from his outside front row starting spot until Cody Gustoff over took him. The race would end with Gustoff taking the win and Pickett in second. Aaron Rudolph came home in third from his 8th starting spot, John Watson in fourth from 10th spot, and fifth went to Brandon Pruitt who came from starting 11th. In the second feature, disaster was avoided on the start. As the cars took the green flag and they became bottled up going into the first corner. It was one of those, "whew, that could have been bad" moments, that didn't turn out to be bad, as everyone regained control. Eric Stanton started back in twelfth position and was able to come through the pack incredibly fast and was leading by lap five. Equally impressive, was the move of Pat Mather who came from 15th starting position and take the second spot. As the final checkers of the night flew, it was Stanton keeping the lead for the win, Mather was second, third went to Tony Cox. fourth to veteran driver Randy Embrey, and fifth was Jesse Hopkins.

The racing action ended right at 10:45 p.m. , with a chilly and brisk wind blowing, but still only a few sprinkles falling. For more information and results, you can check the Boone Speedway website at http://www.raceboone.com/. Racing action will continue next week with another points event in all divisions. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:45 with racing at 7:30. More complete results are listed below. Happy racing!
