"Insane" Finish in the "Class too Tough to Tame" at the Marshalltown Speedway

With a brisk northwest wind and chilly temps, it was a cold night at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night, but the racing action was hot and furious. Young announcer, Blake Anderson, did an excellent job of keeping the crowd informed about the racing and about the drivers.

The first feature was the Dwarf/Mod-Lite class. Dusty Masolini would lead the race from flag to flag as he got his first feature win at the Marshalltown Speedway. A big battle was going on behind him as Mike Morrill, Josh May, James May, Randy Bryan, Eric Hendrickson, and Tim Hennigar were all fighting for positions. Josh May had his night end when he slipped off the backside of turn two, leaving the others to continue their tight racing. Following Masolini across the line at the end, was Mike Morrill for second, Eric Hendrickson in third, fourth was Tim Hennigar, and fifth went to Randy Bryan.

As always, a strong field of 39 IMCA SportMods were on hand. A B-Main would whittle the starting feature event to the 24 car field. Young Cayden Carter from Oskaloosa, would lead the way around the quarter-mile track for 14 of the 15 laps. Carter, unfortunately, would slip off of the turn two topside after taking the white flag, giving the lead over to Brett Moffitt. Moffitt then went on to take the win. Second went to Scott Davis, third to Jake Strayer, fourth to Eric Elliott and fifth to Chad Louk. It has been nice to see some Southern Iowa drivers making their way to our area for some IMCA racing. Both Cayden Carter, and cousin Carter VandenBerg, grandsons of Jimmy Carter, plan to be regulars this season at Marshalltown. They will also be racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway where they will compete in the USRA B-mod division, with different cars. We also noticed Jayme Duinink who is a regular at the Oskaloosa, Iowa track as well, in the #777 SportMod.

Wow! What a finish to the IMCA Stock Car feature! Certainly showed why they are called "The Class too Tough to Tame". By halfway, the leader was Lake City's Dustin Smith as he was able to pass Clay Deppe, the early race leader. Smith had started around the 8th position and following him up to the top postions to throw their hat in the ring, was Trent Murphy and visitor from the Independence area, and a two-time Super Nationals champion, Brian Irvine. The racing between those three drivers was absolutely amazing! With one lap to go, Irvine had the advantage with Smith trailing him and Murphy in third. As the three cars exited turn four, they were three-wide and third place car Murphy, swung to the outside and gained the momentum to propel him across the line first. It was, as promoter Toby Kruse exclaimed, "insane"! Second went to Dustin Smith, third to Irvine and fourth to Steve Meyer. I believe Clay Deppe was scored in fifth. Be sure and check http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/ for all the official results.

Twenty-three IMCA A modifieds were in competion on this night. Mike O'Lear and Adam Larson sat on the front row with Richie Gustin right behind them. You just knew it was going to be an exciting race. Richie Gustin has been a hard charger as of late, but having mechanical problems end his night. Tonight, that didn't happen, and Gustin took the win. Adam Larson came home the runner-up with Mike O'Lear taking third after having had his night end in disaster on the frontstretch last week. Fourth went to Jon Snyder, who came from well back in the pack and rounding out the top five was Vern Jackson.

The final feature of the night, was the IMCA hobby stocks. After having to run a B-Main to pare their starting feature to 24 cars, I only counted nineteen cars taking the track for their feature race. Pistol Pete Hutzel would then drop out before taking the green flag. With just two laps down, Nick Murty would put his 99JR car to the point and he would maintain the top spot and take the win. Following him to take second, was Dustin Elliott, on this the "Elliott Racing Night" at the speedway. Third went to rookie driver out of Newton, Calvin Dhondt, fourth to Eric Knutson, and fifth to Devin Smith.

The night was a windy one, with the dust flying at us, and more than a little chilly. However, the racing was great. We will be back at the Marshalltown Speedway next Friday for more racing action. Happy racing!
