The Boone Speedway was our regular Saturday night stop for racing action this past weekend. It was a bit more comfortable weather wise for spectators, but the wrap was still on a section of front stretch bleachers, and the heaters were beneath to provide some warmth for the fans. A nice field of 128 cars was on hand for the night's program.
The first feature of the evening was the Dwarf/Mod-Lites. It was appearing that Dusty Masolini might take his second win of the weekend, as he had won at the Marshalltown Speedway the previous night. However, Josh May, who has been on a streak lately, had other ideas. May would come from starting sixth to over take second place runner, Randy Bryan and then passed Masolini for the lead. I believe this was Josh May's fourth victory of this early season. Masolini had to settle for the runner-up position, Bryan was third, fourth was Coby Oberembt in his best finish of the year, and fifth went to James May.
The IMCA SportMod feature was whittled down to 24 after the final four starters transferred from a B-Main. It was noted that two cars were unable to make that start, thus only 22 drivers took the green. Early leader Randy Roberts would get shuffled back as Austin Lucas and Geoff Olson made their way forward. Lucas pretty much had it his way when he made the pass for the lead and went home to the win. Coming home in second was Matthew Meinecke, third went to Jared Timmerman who came from starting eleventh, fourth was Mike Pruitt and fifth was Eric Elliott.
The IMCA modified class was up next for their feature. Adam Larson and Craig Carlson sat on the front row and would lead the field through the half-way point. Jake Durbin made the pass around Carlson for second place. The race ended with Larson maintaining the point position and taking the win, Durbin was second, Carlson had a good run to take third, fourth went to Jon Snyder in his sharp looking 69X ride, and fifth went to always hard-charging Jimmy Gustin.
The competitive IMCA stock car feature was completed flag to flag. Wayne Gifford paced the field early but "the Smith Brothers" were coming through the pack, picking off cars as they are known to do. Donovan Smith was able to make the move around Gifford and brother Dustin tailed Gifford in third. The race ended just that way, with Donovan Smith the winner, Wayne Gifford in second, Dustin Smith taking third, fourth to rookie Kenny Hansen, moving up from the hobby stock ranks, and fifth to last week's winner, "Hot" Rod Richards.
There was only one feature for the IMCA hobby stocks as the 31 cars had to run a B-Main.
Travis Fenton in his #10 ride, led the race past the half-way point and was looking good for taking a win. An unfortunate incident right before the white flag, put Cody Gustoff in the backstretch wall with Pat Mather also involved. This would set up a green-white-checkered finish. The restart put Michael Murphy on the back bumper of Fenton and Murphy wasted no time in making the pass for the lead. Murphy took the win, Fenton was in second, third went to Chris Hupp who came from way back in 15th starting spot, fourth to Tony Cox, a name we recall from more than a few years back, and fifth to veteran driver Randy Embrey who made his first appearance of the year.
Racing action was completed at 10:30 which allowed us to get home at the bewitching hour. Racing action will continue at the Boone Speedway next week with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30. More information can be found at www.raceboone.com. Happy racing!
