Harris Clash, Part II

The second part of the Harris Clash (rescheduled from a weather-out three weeks prior) was completed this past Wednesday night, July 28th at Knoxville. This night saw the running of the IMCA Deery Brother Late Models and the IMCA Northern SportMods. There were 33 Late Models and 71 SportMods in competition on the famed half-mile of the Knoxville Raceway.

The SportMods ran eight 6-lap heat races with only the winner moving on to the 20-lap feature. Three B mains moved the four top finishers of each, to tag the end of the field. Young Jared Timmerman from Norwalk, Iowa found himself sitting on the pole position along side Robert Weber out of Burt, Iowa. Timmerman scooted to the lead but soon it was Oskaloosa's Cayden Carter on his tail. Carter and Timmerman swapped the lead several times as the laps wound down. Carter was pushing it to the limit on the last lap in an attempt to catch the 7+ of Timmerman, when he found himself in spin mode in turn three. Adam Ackerman would then collect Carter, ending both of their runs. The race ended under a green-white-checkered finish with Timmerman keeping his composure to take the SportMod Harris Clash win for 2010. Dylan Book and Nate Chodur finished second and third, both having been front runners all night. Jeremy Embrey finished a strong fourth after having qualified through a B main and starting 21st, and southeastern driver Jim Gillenwater from Keokuk rounded out the top five.

The Deery Brother Late Models fielded 33 cars as they qualified through four heat races and two B mains. Three cars transferred from the heats and four from each of the two consy races. Four cars were added as provisionals with Robby Warner, Ryan Giles, Craig Roberts and Cory Goldbeck snagging those positions. It was a "third times the charm" before the race got under way as mishaps caused by spinning cars, led to the no-starts. When racing finally got going, it was the day-glow orange #15 of Jeff Guengerich out front and leading the pack as Nebraska driver Jay Stewart pursued him. We shouldn't have been surprised at the impressive moves that veteran Ray Guss, Jr. was then making. Guss came from starting sixth to pass Stewart and find himself in the second spot with just four laps down in the 35-lap contest. By lap 9, Guss had taken the lead over Guengerich and was pulling away.

With 17-laps to go, on a restart situation, Chargin' Charlie McKenna #22, would catch the berm in turn one, and make several spectacular barrel rolls before coming to a stop. Thankfully, the Clear Lake, Iowa driver was okay. While Guss continued to be in command with little trouble, Jeff Aikey was fighting it out with Darren "The Thriller" Miller for second spot. Aikey had started back about nineteenth place having qualified through a B, and flew through the field.
When it was all said and done, Ray Guss, Jr. took his second consecutive Deery Brother Late Model win, having won last Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Darren Miller stayed ahead of Aikey as they finished second and third. Jeremiah Hurst was scored in fourth place and Brian Harris slapped a 21H on his plain black car he had hot lapped, to take fifth. Rookie to the series, Andy Eckrich finished in sixth and Geingerich fell back to seventh.

Thanks to Bob Harris for the hospitality and for putting the Harris Clash on each year. These are always fun shows to attend and are always marked on our calendar as "must see". Positively Racing was well represented last night and you can check out a more in depth take of last night's racing by clicking on "Back Stretch" and "Tapfan's Tours". Trogdon triumphs for third time in stocks, Bushore takes second win in mods

Boone Speedway kept its perfect record going for consecutive regular scheduled race nights this year, plus the early Spring Frostbuster...seventeen in all. Quite remarkable considering all the rain Iowa has endured. Saturday night saw 145 cars fill the pits and a full grandstand on hand to witness the exciting racing.

Dusty Masolini wove through lap traffic perfectly and took the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature. Tim Hennigar came from starting 23rd on the field, to capture the runner-up position. Josh May was third, Mike Kennedy got fourth and fifth was Randy Bryan.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had 33 cars check in, requiring a B Main to fill out their 24-car A Main feature. Randy Roberts put his #3R to the front right away and kept it there to take the win. A couple of restart situations didn't deter his keeping the lead ahead of second place finisher Jared Timmerman. Eric Elliott had a nice run to take third and following him in fourth was point leader Scott Davis. Jeremy Embrey rounded out the top five.

Young Joel Bushore showed composure in winning the IMCA Modified feature--his second win of the year at the track. Bushore led the entire race, hitting his mark each time to fend off the competition. Bill Davis, Jr. took second in what appeared to be a new car, Scott Baker was third, holding off fourth place finisher, Randy Havlik and fifth place of Jake Durbin.

The Class too Tough to Tame, the IMCA Stock Cars found the bright white and green #12 of Bryan Trogdon in the winner's circle for the third time this season. He fought past earlier front runners Ryan Rose and Josh Brauckman to take the lead by lap eight of the 18-lap feature. Cars were running three-wide at times, making for some tight situations and great racing action for the fans. Following Trogdon to take second was Brauckman and in third place, Ryan Rose. Point leader Donavon Smith crossed in fourth place and fifth went to Trent Murphy.

Two A features were held for the Hobby Stocks. In the first main, Scott Lograsso went from ninth to first in seven laps. On lap 10 of the 12-lap feature, a scary moment occured when the 38R of Aaron Rudolph rose on it's nose right at the flagstand. An alert Nick Breuklander dashed from his flagstand, and then quickly returned to throw the red flag as Rudolph landed on the frontstretch. It appeared Nick caught a flying spring on the shoulder but his quick action may have avoided much worse. This was just one example of the repeated warning of why spectators need to keep their distance from the fence area during races. It was a green-white-checkered situation on the restart then and on the final lap, it was Michael Murphy making the move around Lograsso to take the win. Third place was Chris Hupp, fourth went to Darin Rothfus and fifth to Cody Gustoff.

The second Hobby Stock feature completed the night's racing. "Judd" Justin Maschke sat on the pole position and liked that spot as he led it flag to flag. Pat Mather fought through the pack to take second place, Travis Fenton was third, fourth went to Richard Yaw II and fifth went to timeless Larry Embrey.

We plan to attend the upcoming Wednesday night show at the Knoxville Speedway when the rescheduled IMCA SportMods and Deery Brother Late Models come to town....their portion of the Harris Clash. Until next time, happy racing!

Rain shortens racing at Marshalltown Speedway

It was off to our regular Friday night stop at the Marshalltown Speedway and once again, it was a night of checking the radar often. It is getting old watching approaching storms but this night at least allowed all of the heats and the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature to get completed before the heavy raindrops fell.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was hurried to the track as the skies grew darker and darker. Ivan Guerra led the pack during the opening laps until a spin on the frontstretch found him rejoining the line-up at the tail. Joel Huggins took over that top spot as the feature restarted with Cory Sonner chasing him. Meanwhile, Tim Hennigar was weaving his way through traffic from starting ninth to find himself in the third spot. Another yellow flew with just two laps to go making for a shoot-out to the finish. Joel Huggins kept that point postion to take the win, Tim Hennigar made the pass into second on the white flag lap to take runner-up, third went to Cory Sonner, fourth to Eric Hendrickson and fifth to Josh May.

The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was barely completed before the SportMods appeared on the track. Sprinkles had begun to fall just prior to their appearance. With twenty-nine of the competitiors on hand for the night, a B-Main had completed their 24-car starting field with Ryan Engelkes taking that consy. The feature got one or two laps completed before the sprinkles grew heavy enough to pull the cars from the track. That was our clue to "gather and run". We nearly made it to our vehicle before the heavy sprinkles turned into a real rain, resulting in the end of racing for the night.

With the rain shortened program, there will be double features next week in the SportMod, Stock Car, Modified and Hobby Stock classes. Check out the Marshalltown Speedway website at www.marshalltownspeedway.com for schedule, points and other information pertaining to the track. Happy racing!

Guss grabs Deery win at Osky

The IMCA Deery Brothers Late Models came to town Wednesday night for a turn at the big monster half-mile at Osky. They joined the regular classes in conjunction with the Southern Iowa Fair. The 35-lap Deery Brothers feature was the finale for the evening.

The USRA B Modifieds were the first to run their feature event. Mike Wanders would lead the first few laps until Cayden Carter took over about lap five. Carter's cousin Carter VandenBerg in the 7 car moved to second before Bill Gibson slipped by him. Jason "Mighty Mouse" McDaniel then maneuvered his ride up into the second spot and would chase Carter to the checkers. Carter added another win to his impressive list of runs this year, McDaniel was second, third went to Bill Gibson, fourth to Carter VandenBerg, and fifth was Mike Wanders.

Derek Kirkland took another win in the USRA Hobby Stock class but it wasn't without a good battle prior to his taking the checkers. Todd Reitzler jumped to the lead over Don Nunnikhoven and those two would swap back and forth for many laps. Kirkland joined the fray for a 3-car, 3-wide shoot-out as the laps wound down. With two laps to go and Nunnikhoven leading, he suffered a tire going down as he entered turn two. This left the 2K of Kirkland and the 22R of Reitzler to fight it out for the final two laps. Kirkland was first across the line to take the win, Reitzler in second. Third went to Kris Walker who had started well back in the pack, fourth was Steve Allen, and fifth went to Craig Brown.

Nine USRA Stock Cars were on hand with eight taking the green flag for their A. David Denham in the 93 car was unable to make the starting call. It was tight, tight racing early on as "The Flying Dutchman " Mike VanGenderen fought off the challenges of Shane Weller and Nathan Wood. Wood made the pass into first and Weller slipped by VanGenderen as the checkers flew. Wood added another Osky win to his list this year, Weller took second and VanGenderen third. Fourth was Kyle Harwood and rounding out the top five was Corey "just across the road in turn one" Stout in car 94, making his first appearance of the year.

Fourteen USRA Modifieds checked into the pits and all started their main. Steve Blattler showed his muscles tonight as he led the entire race. Fertile, Iowa driver Kelly Shryock pulled down to join the contest for the night and battled with Zack VanderBeek. Shryock made the pass on VanderBeek, and then would make the attempt to catch Blattler. It wasn't to be on this night as Blattler took a dominate win. Shryock closed a bit on the leader but had to settle for the runner-up place, with VanderBeek taking third. Fourth went to Corning, Iowa driver, Ryan Peckham and fifth was Josh Truman.

Thirty-one IMCA Deery Brothers Late Models checked in on the night. Two B Mains filled out the 24-car starting field. Clear Lake, Iowa's Charlie McKenna led the charge around the big old half-mile through lap 9 or 10 of the 35-lap feature. Veteran driver Ray Guss, Jr. was the one who took over that top spot then with McKenna and Deery rookie Andy Eckrich giving chase. Lap 32 resulted in a red flag situation when McKenna smacked the wall between turns three and four and took a nasty hit. A wheel was observed flying but it was unclear if the wheel was off before or after the contact with the wall. McKenna was okay and exited the car on his own. The final three laps saw no changes up front in the finishing order with Guss taking the win. Andy Eckrich finished as the runner-up, third was Jay Johnson, fourth was Terry Neal and fifth went to Jeremiah Hurst. Guss extends his point lead on the Deery Brothers Summer Series with his win. Going into the night, Mark Burgtorf was second in points, but suffered mechanical woes in his heat race and was done for the night.

For official results check out http://www.rlpromotions.com/ and http://www.imca.com/ will have the Deery Brothers Late Model rundown. The Positively Racing crew was represented well last night so check "Back Stretch" and "Tapfan's Tours" for more takes on the night's racing action. Happy racing!

Duffy does it at West Union HDT

It had been a number of years since we had made our way up to the fairground's track at West Union but we were anxious to see another of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour races so opted to make the trip. We also saw quite a few racing friends we see on a regular basis amongst the fans in the grandstand, as well as a good attendance by the Positively Racing crew. These fans alone brought a fan base from all across the state of Iowa.

Stock cars and hobby stocks ran as support classes with the HDT show and were running for track points. Seventeen stock cars ran the A main with Dan Trimble seeing the checkers fly first as he took the win over Mitch Hovden. Third went to Lynn Panos, fourth to Danny Cole and fifth was Kevin Donlan.

Chris Hovden won the hobby stock feature. He was chased across the line by Scott Spilde, Steve Holthaus, Dan Hovden and Troy Hovey. Those are names that it would be unusual NOT to see racing in that part of the state.

Twenty-seven HDT competitors checked into the Fayette County Speedway; a bit down from previous shows, but not short on talent. We always enjoy watching the cars arrive and I noted that one car I had not observed was the current point leader, Josh Foster. It was later announced that his absence was due to having a non-racing accident, resulting in a broken leg, thus putting him out of competition for some period of time. Foster has been fun to watch in all of the shows we have seen.

Heat race winners for the HDT were regular competitors at the track, Darin Duffy, and Josh O'Brien, and Long Grove, Iowa's Jeff Morris. The top four in the heats, redrew for their starting positions, putting HDT regulars Jeff Waterman from Quincy, Illinois on the pole position with young Nate Caruth from Ames, along side.

Caruth led the first few laps of the 30-lap event though it was plagued with yellow flags. I counted four yellows in the first six laps of the contest, which was no doubt frustrating to the drivers as well as the fans. One such incident halting the action involved several cars piled together in turn two. This lengthy caution then resulted in Ron Pope, Mark Elliott and Greg Cox eventually being towed from the track. At the same time, a car stalled in turn four had to be towed off as well.

With action getting back underway, Caruth saw his lead vanish when Darin Duffy made the pass under him to take over the lead. From there on, Duffy had little trouble in keeping the point spot, though cars were jockeying behind him for position. Mike Jergens, Plover, Iowa driver made the pass into the second spot when he got by Caruth before another yellow came out. This yellow did not fly until lap 25, which had allowed for good racing action as the drivers had gotten into their racing rhythm. At the end of the 30 laps, it was Darin Duffy taking his first HDT win, Mike Jergens was second, Jeff Waterman made the pass around Caruth as they took third and fourth respectively, and rounding out the top five was Waterloo's Vern Jackson. Unofficially, it now appears that Rich Smith, the Davenport, Iowa driver of the #8 machine, has taken over the point lead after having a sixth place finish on the night with Mike Jergens a few points behind in second place.

It was announced that two make-up features would be run at the conclusion of the regular scheduled show with the stock cars and hobby stocks again taking to the track. Since we had a long drive, we opted to head the vehicle toward home and did not see the final two features. We did hear that Dan Trimble doubled-up on the night in the stock cars, taking another win, and the hobby stock make-up feature went to Scott Spilde.

As a note, it has been a long time since we have seen the line-up board being shown to the drivers on the track for realignments. It appeared that many of the drivers were not familiar with that old-time routine either, as it took a bit of time to get them in their proper spots.

As mentioned earlier, the Positively Racing crew was represented well. Be sure and check out Ryan Clark's take of the evening as he watched from behind the mic duties at "In Staging". He did a fine job of subbing for regular HDT announcer, Blake Anderson. You will also find the thoughts of Jeff Broeg at "Back Stretch" and Kevin Trittien at "Tapfan's Tours", so check those out as well. For complete official results, go to http://www.dirttour.com/ as well as more information on the HDT tour racing. Happy racing!

Scott Davis repeats in SportMods at Boone

It was hot temps and hot racing action this past Saturday night at the Boone Speedway. A few "dips" would appear in the corners, causing incidents that would halt the racing more than once. A first time winner got to victory lane in the modified division and Scott Davis would make it back-to-back wins in the SportMod class.

Mike Kennedy was the winner in the Dwarf/Mod Lite A main. He was the leader at the white flag lap even though racing was red-flagged before the checkers flew. Father-son duo James and Josh May were involved in a corner-two wheel-hop mishap which resulted in son Josh taking a roll. May was okay and the race ended under yellow-checkered. Charlie Brown finished in second place, third would go to Tim Hennigar, fourth to Mike Morrill and fifth was Travis Stensland.

The IMCA Northern SportMods also had their feature end with a yellow-checkers situation. This would be after a second try at a green-white-checkered finish. Scott Davis slipped by leader Bill Wears after taking the white flag and with an incident occurring on the track causing another yellow, the race was called complete. Davis stretched his point lead and repeated his win from last week. Bill Wears was scored in second, third went to Darren Huntley, fourth to Matthew Meinecke and Eric Elliott came home in fifth place. One incident in the feature was rather alarming when a car spun out on the top of turn three, and in an attempt to rejoin the field, wound up driving around the top, facing traffic. With no yellow being thrown, thankfully, nothing happened.

Nate Caruth made his visit to the Boone Speedway pay off by winning the IMCA Modified main event. He found the higher side of the track to his liking as he motored easily to take the win over regular competitor Russ Dickerson. Third went to Kelly Lyons, while point leader Cale Sponsler took fourth and Jake Durbin, racing a new car, was scored in fifth. As a note, young Joel Bushore had his night end when mechanical problems led him to spin out at the top of turn three as smoke poured from the car. It appeared he was having difficulty walking after emerging from his car and second hand information told us he had a very swollen knee after apparently taking a blow from an object coming into the cockpit.

Veteran driver Robert Stofer scored his second win of the year in winning the IMCA Stock Car feature, leading all but the first couple of laps. Point leader Donavon Smith was closing in on Stofer during the waning laps, but had to be content with a second place finish. Jerry Gifford was third, fourth went to Jay Schmidt from starting twelveth on the field, and rounding out the top five was last week's winner Cory Bushnell.

The final feature was the IMCA Hobby Stocks. This race saw really tight racing up front as Austin Luellen, Aaron Rudolph, Tyler Pickett and Randy Embrey dueled it out for the top spots.
Coming out on top as the checkers flew was Aaron Rudolph, Randy Embrey in second and coming from mid-pack, Austin Luellen was third, Michael Murphy in fourth, and Scott Lograsso in fifth. Murphy would be claimed after actually crossing the line not in the top four. It was our understanding that the 5A of Tyler Pickett crossed the line in fourth, but was penalized several positions for what we assume to be jumping a restart. This moved Murphy up in his finishing order, making him eligible for a claim. This was still being debated when we left the track.

Next week at the Boone Speedway, the youngsters can enjoy a money toss along with watching all of the regular classes in competition. Hot laps are 6:45 p.m. with racing at 7:30. Check http://www.raceboone.com/ for complete results, points and all information pertaining to the Boone Speedway. Happy racing!

Smith brothers take wins at Marshalltown

The Marshalltown Speedway was sharing the grounds with the Central Iowa Fair this past Friday night. It was a hot and humid night and before the night was over, we were once again watching dark clouds approaching from the north. This time, Mother Nature was kind and only provided us with a light show. The night brought a first time winner at the speedway in the IMCA SportMod class, while the other classes saw some familiar faces back in Victory Lane.

When the MADCRA Dwarf/Mod Lite feature pulled onto the track, the approaching clouds seemed to become a little more ominous and we were hoping for a quick feature event to keep the program moving along. That hope dimmed quickly when cars were tumbling in turn four before a lap was scored. From our vantage point, it appeared to be the OB of Coby Oberembt, the 95J of Jason Hall and the 66F of Eric Hendrickson ending up on their lids. Everyone was okay. When action resumed, it was Charlie Brown leading the field until Josh May had other ideas and took over the top spot. Mike Morrill also made the pass to take over second and with one lap to go, Tim Hennigar had the adrenaline going and got into the third spot. Hennigar had started well back in the field, had to go to the pits and tagged, and then shot through the pack. With Josh May taking the win, it was Morill for second, third was Hennigar, fourth went to Charlie Brown, and fifth was Mike Kennedy.

The IMCA Northern SportMods were up next for their main event. Nick Roberts took advantage of his front row starting spot and led the charge around the highbanks. Fighting for position behind him were Eric Elliott, Kyle Brown and Cayden Carter. When all was said and done, it would be 14 year old Nick Roberts taking his first feature win at the Marshalltown Speedway with Kyle Brown settling for the runner-up spot. Cayden Carter came home in third place, Scott Davis was fourth and fifth went to Geoff Olson. It appears that Davis has now taken over the points lead as he finished well ahead of Eric Flander who had led points going into the night by a mere four points.

The IMCA Stock Cars saw Dustin Smith make it back-to-back wins as he repeated from last Friday night. Jeff Wollam fought it out with Smith much of the race with Wollam giving it his best effort only to end up with that bridesmaid spot. Steve Meyer took third over Trent Murphy in fourth, and fifth was Tracy Gienger.

The IMCA Modified class had 20 cars check into the pits. Their 20-lap feature event turned into a "catch Luke Wanninger" contest. Wanninger put his #20 back into Victory Lane for the second time this year as Jimmy Gustin chased him. Jimmy Gustin was second followed by Jay Schmidt in third, Rod Clement in fourth and rounding out the top five was Tim Murty in what appears to be a former Jimmy Gustin car.

Closing out the night's events would be the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. It would be abruptly haulted before a lap was scored, when Jennifer Hulin in her #82 orange machine, did a little flip on the backstretch. She was okay and would eventually re-enter the race after getting three flat tires replaced. Point leader Devin Smith wove his way around traffic to be leading by lap five and had little difficulty in scoring the victory. Second place went to Michael Murphy....third was Eric Knutson, fourth was Newton's Calvin Dhondt and fifth went to Eric Larson.

Next week's regular points night will also included the second "spectator eliminator" challenge. The first contest was deemed such a success, it is anticipated that even more competitors will bring their licensed vehicles to go up against opponents. Join us at the Marshalltown Speedway next week when hot laps are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and races to begin at 7:30 p.m. For full results and information pertaining to the track, be sure and check out http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/. Happy racing!

Mather and McDaniel post Osky wins

This is the hot, humid July weather that I remember as a kid. Whew! Thankfully a nice breeze was blowing at the Southern Iowa Speedway this past Wednesday night which provided some relief to fans and those in the pits. Drivers I am sure were sweltering! After feature racing, a total of four drivers would be disqualified--two in the B mods and two in the hobby stock division--making for changes in the finishes.

The USRA stock cars only had a total of six cars signed in on this night. A far cry from the "glory days" of stock car racing at Osky when a B main was nearly always needed. However, it was a really exciting race with two drivers battling it out up front! Not surprisingly, those two drivers were Nathan Wood and Mike VanGenderen. The 12-lap feature saw those two jockeying back and forth most of those laps. Wood led through lap eight when VanGenderen made the pass into the lead and was looking to see victory lane. Wood had other ideas, and flung his #52 around VanGenderen on the final corners as the checkers were flying ahead. I believe this makes four wins for the Keswick, Iowa driver at the speedway this year. Kyle Harwood crossed the line in his #15K machine in third and visiting driver David Dennem crossed in fourth. Rick Todd did not finish as his car had smoked all night long, and Toby Smith was unable to start the feature.

Up next was the USRA hobby stockers. Sitting on the front row were Steve Allen (coming off of a recent win at Memphis, Missouri) and the point leader, Derek Kirkland. Allen led the opening laps but by lap six, Todd Reitzler was in the lead and putting a lot of distance between himself and second place of Andrew Husted. Meanwhile Craig Brown was making great headway and put himself in a distant second place as he battled with Kris Walker and Don Nunnikhoven. Reitzler crossed the line in first place by a lengthy margin as Brown, Walker, Nunnikhoven and Derek Kirkland rounded out the top five. However, things would get changed a great deal after a bit of teching. It was announced that Reitzler and Nunnikhoven were both disqualified for having "illegal ported heads". This would then hand over the win to Craig Brown...his first win at Osky...second would go to Kris Walker, third to Derek Kirkland, fourth to the "Lady's Man" #20 (it's pink) of Andrew Husted out of Rutledge, Missouri, and tallied in fifth would be Steve Allen.

Twelve USRA modifieds took to the track for their feature event. "Birthday boy" Greg Cox sat on the pole...hoping for a birthday win, with Colt Mather along side. Mather would leap to the lead and Cox would give chase the entire 18-lap race. Mather took the win and Cox had to settle for that runner up spot. Third went to Packwood, Iowa driver Scott Dickey, fourth to Steven Blattler, and fifth to Brandon Banks.

The program was stepped up a bit as storm clouds fast approached from the west. The final feature, the B-mods, quickly maneuvered into their starting line-up for their 15-lap A main.
Polesitter, Carter VandenBerg was able to make the call after coasting across the line for the win in his heat race--victim of a shucked driveshaft. Jason McDaniel sat along side VandenBerg on the front row. McDaniel and VandenBerg would run one-two the entire circuits around the "Mahaska Monster half-mile" to finish in that order. I thought I understood announcer Tony Paris say this was McDaniel's first B-mod win at Osky.

The remaining finishing order in the B-mod feature was shuffled around when two of the top five finishers were disqualified in post-race inspection for having "full spools"--Cayden Carter in the #10 and Mike Shelton in the #16. This would move Bill Gibson into the third place finishing spot, Mike Wanders to fourth, and fifth would be the new car on the night, the #20 announced to be Minburn, Iowa driver Clint Luellen. Luellen usually races the 3L IMCA SportMod at the Boone Speedway. As a note, stock car driver Nathan Wood was in a black #52 B mod on the evening, but his night came to an early climax during his heat race when he threw a driveshaft in a ball of fire. He did not start the feature.

The racing program beat Mother Nature on this night. When we left the track, there was lightning all around and radar showed nasty red not far away. Mark your calendars for next Wednesday night as the IMCA Deery Brothers late model series comes to the Southern Iowa Speedway during the fair. All regular classes will also be on the docket. Tickets will be $15 for adults and $5 for children 6-12. Hot laps are scheduled for their regular time of 7:15 with racing at 7:30. Be sure and check www.rlpromotions.com for official race results and information as well as www.heartlandmotorsports.com. Happy racing!

It's Bushnell in the stocks at Boone Speedway

There was hoola hoops spinning as well as many race cars this past Saturday night at the Boone Speedway. A hoola hoop contest was held during the farming session as the drivers awaited the time for their feature events. This weekend of racing we saw more cars on spin cycle than normal and some of the action was more like bumper cars than racing! The night did not lack for excitement.

There were 25 of the Dwarf/Mod Lites checked into the pits, with only one car unable to make the call for the feature. Kevin Grisham led the pack for nearly all of their 15-lap race, but would have traded any of those other laps to still have it as the checkers flew. It was Colby Oberembt who spoiled the thrill of a win for Grisham when he grab the lead away on that final lap. Oberembt took the win with Grisham getting a disappointing second place finish. Third went to Tim Hennigar who had started 11th, fourth was Jeff Stensland and fifth was Angelo Montgomery.

The IMCA Northern SportMods took to the track next and in the end, it was Boone's own Scott Davis seeing the checkers first. Davis had dueled many of the final laps with Randy Roberts, but it would be Davis winning the battle and taking the win. With Roberts taking the bridesmaid spot, third would go to David Schlicht, fourth to Jason Purvis - a contender throughout the race - and fifth went to Eric Elliott. Davis has now taken over the point lead from Geoff Olson who finished well back in the field.

The IMCA modifieds were up next to run their 20-lap feature. Jimmy Gustin made a statement in taking his second feature win during the regular season (he also won the Frostbuster) as he diced through the pack quickly from starting in 10th, to take the lead with 10 laps down. He pulled away from second place Joel Bushore to win by a comfortable margin. Cale Sponsler had a nice run to finish third, fourth went to Mike Molle, and rounding out the top five was Jon Snyder. As mentioned last week, there seemed to be some question about last week's finishing place for Jimmy Gustin. An added insert in this week's program indicated Jimmy Gustin did not finish in second and did not receive any points, thus dropping him in the points from first place to fourth.
Unofficially by our calculations, it is now Cale Sponsler in first by six points over Jake Durbin.

A new name was added to the winners list this year in the IMCA Stock Car class. Cory Bushnell won but had to ward off the advances of several cars chasing him. Bushnell won the war to take his first win of the year at Boone. He held off Alan VanGorp in second, Josh Brauckman in third, Rod Richards in fourth, and point leader Donavon Smith in fifth.

Ending the night's racing events was the Hobby Stockers. Chris Hupp seems to like winning so much, he repeated his win from last week. Randy Embrey had to come from qualifying through the B to even run the feature, but put forth a great effort to get second. Third went to Scott Lograsso, back in his old ride, fourth to Michael Murphy and fifth to Mark Hidlebaugh.

Check out http://www.raceboone.com/ for results, points, and all information about the Boone Speedway. It will be another great night of regular points racing next week with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30. Happy racing!

Ladehoff returns to Victory Lane at Marshalltown

The Marshalltown Speedway provided an action packed night, though at times, it seemed to be one of those full moon nights...without a full moon shining! Two classes would see repeat winners from last week and a time limit would be needed in the SportMod Class.

The usual first class to run their main event was the Dwarf/Mod Lites. After numerous yellows flying throughout the race, Josh May endured to come home the winner. Tim Hennigar pulled close behind May in an attempt to make the pass, but would have to settle for second. Third went to Dusty Masolini, fourth to Mike Kennedy and fifth to point leader, Mike Morrill.

The IMCA Northern SportMod feature took four attempts for a start before it continued green. The contest was plagued with cautions and would eventually be under a time limit restriction. As often happens, the race did then continue to the green flag. A driver who has been very successful of late, Scott Davis, took his car back to the winner's circle as he repeated a win from the previous week. Nick Roberts came across the line in second place and third would go to Jason Severence. Eric Flander took fourth but had to qualify for the feature through a B main. Flander is the current point leader with Scott Davis narrowing that lead. Rounding out the top five on the night was Gaitlin Leytham.

The IMCA Stock Cars were up next for their 18-lap feature. Steve Meyer got to the front quickly with Trevor Titus chasing him. An unfortunate spin by Titus mixed up the pack when the green flew after the restart, putting point leader Trent Murphy to start behind leader Meyer. However, Dustin Smith was coming fast from starting at the tail to put his 85 into contention for a top spot and not surprisingly, would soon take over the number one spot. Smith would see the checkers flying first, Steve Meyer kept second, Trent Murphy was third, and fourth went to The Flyin' Farmer, Rick Brown.

The IMCA modifieds were running for $500 to win tonight and $100 to start. However, a slight twist was also thrown in by promoter Toby Kruse. Kruse had challenged any driver who had qualified for the previous night's Harris Clash A main and could win tonight, they would take home $1,000. By our records, several drivers would have that chance as Richie Gustin (winner of the Harris Clash) Jay Schmidt, Mike O'Lear, David Brown and visitor Chris Abelson were in attendance. We noted another Marshalltown Speedway frequent competitor who would have been in that category, Vern Jackson, was not racing on the night...no doubt due to damage received at the conclusion of the Clash.

Brett Ladehoff raced to the lead at the start of the race but with just four laps down, here came Richie Gustin! Gustin led at lap four--after starting back in row five-- and was looking for that $1,000 paycheck! Gustin put some distance between himself and Ladehoff as he ran the topside. With just a handful of laps left, Ladehoff began to catch the leader and the duel was on!
Ladehoff was able to make that winning pass on Gustin with a lap to go, repeating his win from last week. The fans definitely got their money's worth from that race! With Ladehoff and Richie Gustin putting on such a show up front, Jimmy Gustin had been reeling in the leaders but time ran out and he was scored in third. Fourth went to Jon Snyder and fifth to visiting Chris Abelson from Sioux City.

After the modified race had pretty much left everyone breathless....the final feature, the IMCA Hobby Stocks, pulled onto the track. Vince Buchholz led all but that final important lap as Devin Smith made the pass into the lead and come home with the win. Buchholz had to settle for second after running a fine race, third went to Dustin Filloon, fourth to Todd Reitzler and fifth to Newton's Josh Saunders in his bright yellow ride.

Make plans to attend the Marshalltown Speedway this coming Friday night for another exciting night of entertainment when all classes will again be on the docket. For full results and other information pertaining to the the track, check out www.marshalltownspeedway.com. Happy racing!

Richie Gustin Grabs Harris Clash win!

The Harris Clash has become an event that we look forward to each year--a "must see" on our list. It was an exciting finish last night at the Knoxville Raceway that found Richie Gustin nab the win on the final lap--to the cheers of most in the stands.

We noted 69 cars participating last night with six heat events, three B's and the grand finale, the 25-lap A feature. Mark Elliott in his Dandyland Farms ride, looked to be on his way to an easy win as he easily led the pack around the famed Knoxville track. One yellow flag flew early in the contest about lap five, and then it was easy sailing for the #12, as he pulled away from the rest of the field. Meanwhile, flying through the pack from 16th starting spot, was the 97M of Oberlin, Kansas driver, David Murray. Earlier, Murray had qualified through his heat race from starting dead last, to take the final 3rd place quaifying spot. Murray was up to 3rd place in the feature when a rut in turn one would throw him into the fence with just two laps to go. This would set up a shoot out on the restart with Elliott still leading, Jordan Grabouski in second, and coming from 20th starting spot...Richie Gustin in third. On the restart, Elliott seemed to pull away again, but this would be just momentarily, as he slowed on the backstretch dramatically. This would set up the Grabouski/Gustin duel for the win. On the white flag lap, Gustin swung around Grabouski...not an unusual sight as we've seen it several times this year...and win the Harris Clash for 2010. Quite an impressive run for the young driver from Gilman, Iowa. Grabouski was scored in second, third went to Jeremy Mills who started back in 17th place, fourth to Josh Foster from starting thirteenth and who had been a front runner most of the race, and fifth was a former winner of the Harris Clash, Johnny "the Jet" Saathoff.

Racing was concluded at 9:15 p.m. allowing all to "hit the road" toward home. The program was run off in a timely manner which we always appreciate. Thanks to Bob Harris for putting on this great show every year. Be sure and check out "Back Stretch" and "Tapfan's Tours" on Postively Racing for their take on the racing action too. Full results can be found at http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com/. Get out and enjoy some great racing this coming weekend as Mother Nature may just give us a break in her recent unrelenting downpours. Happy racing!

Boone Speedway sees Richie Gustin win for the fourth time

It was a typical warm Iowa July night at the Boone Speedway this past Saturday night as the track hosted their thirteenth regular season night of racing. It was noted that car count was down a bit which was not too unexpected due to the 4th of July holiday weekend. With 120 cars on hand, they provided more than enough racing action on the night.

The 15-lap Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was first on the program. Charlie Brown liked his outside front row starting spot and took off immediately into the lead. "Good Grief" Charlie Brown would like that spot too well to relinquish it, and would take the win. Colby Oberembt challenged Brown early on until Ed Zehm managed the pass around him. Ed Zehm, the two previous week's winner, recovered nicely from kissing the backstretch wall in the opening laps, to take the runner up spot and Oberembt having to settle for third place. Fourth went to young Josh May, point leader who started the contest in the twelfth place, and fifth was Matthew Goodin.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had their usual nice field of cars on hand, requiring a B Main to complete the starting grid of the A main. Several yellows flew during the course of the contest, bunching the field on the restarts. Eric Elliott had no beef with the yellows as he skillfully advanced into the lead by lap eight. Meanwhile, Jared Timmerman had his sights set on the leader as he ran second. However, with laps winding down and Elliott in command, the race would end with Elliott taking the win over Timmerman in second. Third went to Jeremy Embrey, fourth to Jason Purvis the early laps race leader, and fifth to Tom Burke.

The IMCA modifieds was a bit short in numbers with 15 cars checked in, but not short of exciting action in their feature. Bill Davis, Jr. led early, developed a momentary lack of power and fell back several positions. This happened as yellow flew for a car stopped on the front chute. Davis was realigned in fifth position on the restart with Jon Snyder taking over the race lead. Richie Gustin closely tailed Snyder and with a bit of a "nudge", got around him to take over the lead. Brother Jimmy Gustin then drew into the picture as he also passed Snyder to move into second position. However, he then started trailing smoke (from a rubbing tire we suspect)
which is not tolerable at the Boone Speedway. This resulted in the 19 of Jimmy Gustin being shown the black flag repeatedly and also indicated on the scoreboard. Gustin did not heed the penalty situation and continued to drive hard to catch brother Richie for the rest of the race.
When the race ended, Jimmy Gustin was ushered out of the infield and into the pits. The finish of the race was shown on the scoreboard as Richie Gustin in first --his fourth win this year--the 18 of Jake Durbin in second place, Snyder third, fourth to the 93 of Cale Sponsler and fifth to Bill Davis, Jr. There seems to be a bit of a controversy as to where the 19 of Jimmy Gustin placed (he was the track point leader) but we were told that he was dq'd with no points awarded. Stay tuned for how this may all pan out!

Wayne Gifford took back-to-back wins at Boone, winning for the third time this year in the class "too tough to tame", the IMCA Stock Cars. Gifford started ninth on the field and was leading by lap two albeit with a first lap mishap in turns three and four which changed up the field. Hot Rod Richards finished behind Gifford for second place and three veteran drivers at the Boone Speedway, Steve Jackson (making a rare appearance this year) Robert Stofer, and Larry Crocheck finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. Gifford lost his shocks to a claim after the race.

One Hobby Stock feature completed the racing. It seemed as if only a lap or two would be completed before a yellow flag flew, not allowing the drivers to even get into a racing rhythm. Fifth place starter, Chris Hupp got to the front early to lead over Brandon Brinton and that would be how they would finish out their A main. Following Brinton for third was Dean Hartwig, fourth was Scott Lograsso, last week's winner, and fifth went to the 12M of Matt McDonald. Lograsso would loose his motor when the 46J of Jesse Hopkins would make the claim.

A regular night of racing is on the schedule for next Saturday night, July 10th when all classes will be in competition. Be sure and check www.raceboone.com for news and information pertaining to the Boone Speedway. Happy racing!

Ladehoff takes the win at Marshalltown

The beginning of the 4th of July holiday weekend kicked off for us at the Marshalltown Speedway on Friday evening as 130 plus cars filled the pits. A good crowd of race fans were on hand to enjoy the pleasant weather and great racing action.

The micro-mini sprints were on hand for the second time this year as they ran the highbanks. This is the largest track the little powerhouses run and they seem to love it. The winner of the feature was Ben Woods in the #11B machine.

Joel Huggins took his third win of the season in the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature. Huggins led the entire race; most of it being chased by James May, who was second. Third went to Mike Kennedy, fourth to Colby Oberembt and fifth to Eric Hendrickson.

Scott Davis scored the IMCA Northern SportMod feature from starting twelfth on the field. Kyle Brown started eighth to take the runner up honors. Jake Strayer who also started well back in the pack, was scored third, Jared VanDeest took fourth and fifth went to Grundy Center driver, Jake Severance.

It was a repeat driver taking the win in the IMCA Stock Car class. Trent Murphy repeated his win from last week, taking his fourth win this year at the track. Murphy, leading points, extended his lead by one over second place finisher Dustin Smith who was all over the back bumper of the winner. Early leader Steve Meyer, finished well in third place as he battled with fourth place finisher Jeff Wollam and fifth place finisher Dave Atcher.

Several yellows would fly in the IMCA modified class; bunching the field and making for some real competitive racing. Those cautions did not deter Brett Ladehoff as he led all laps to take his first win of the season at Marshalltown. Finishing in second was the 19J of Jay Schmidt who was chased across the line by Adam Larson in third. Fourth was Richie Gustin and rounding out the top five was Scott Simotovich.

Aaron Rudolph led from early on to post the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. The 12K of Eric Knutson tried in vane to catch Rudolph but had to settle for second. Point leader Devin Smith finished in third to extend his lead, fourth went to Newton, Iowa's Josh Saunders and fifth was the 9R of Matt Hudspeth.

Next Friday night, the IMCA modifieds will be running for $500 to win and $100 to start the feature--courtesy of Budweiser. Why not make plans for a trip to the Marshalltown Speedway for a great night of dirt track racing? You shouldn't be disappointed with the racing action. Foster grabs HDT win and Webb takes stock car shoot out at Donnellson

Thursday night, July 1st, found several shows going on around the state. We chose to head to the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson for the Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA modifieds and the fourth and final leg of the IMCA stock car Shoot Out. We always enjoy this facility and appreciate the great view from their solid concrete grandstand. It was enjoyable despite the swarms of Mayflies that suddenly inhabited the area! These short-lived insects were everywhere and thankfully no more than just annoying. As the night ended, there would be a second-time HDT winner and a new stock car Shoot Out winner.

The hobby stock class was also on the program for the evening. When all was said and done for their feature, the #30 car Alex Buffington from Wapello would take the top honors. Burlington driver Jake Wenig would follow in the runner-up spot, third was Dean Kratzer from Ft. Madison, fourth went to Matt Tucker and fifth was Jim Lynch from Donnellson.

Twenty-five IMCA stock cars were checked into the pits--with numbers down considerably from the previous three nights of the Shoot Out. No doubt, this had much to do with the traveling during mid-week. Audubon driver Kenny Hansen, sat on the pole of the feature and would lead for the opening laps. I believe Hansen is one of the drivers who made all of the four nights of Shoot Out competition. With seven laps down of the 30-lap feature, it was Chris Webb from Biggsville, Illinois making the pass for the lead. Webb is a regular at the Lee County Speedway and showed his familiarity of the track. He would lead all of the remaining laps to capture his first IMCA Stock Car Shoot Out feature win. Another regular at the track, Jason Cook was runner-up as he passed Hansen who was scored in third. Fourth was Kyle Frederick from Wisconsin, who also made all four of the series races, and fifth would go to yet another track regular, that being Jim Redman from Lockridge, Iowa. The series winner was the Chelsea, Iowa driver, Damon Murty who garnered the most points during the four-night competition. Murty finished eleventh after having three third place finishes previously.

A nice turn out of 47 Hawkeye Dirt Tour modifieds filled the pits. Series director, Bucky Doren should have been pleased with the car count as well should have been the fans who watched them race. Two provisional drivers rounded out the 24-car starting field with Ron Pope taking the tour provision and Bill Roberts was awarded the track provision.

Rich Smith was the lucky winner of the pole-position draw and would lead the first few opening laps of the 30-lap race. Several yellows would fly thoughout the race allowing cars to bunch the field. Josh Foster who had started back in row five, made the swing by Smith to capture the lead along about lap six. He would then pull away from the rest of the field as he expertley ran the topside of the track. Smith would trail him in second as he consistently ran the bottom of the track, also putting much distance between himself and third place. Foster would take his second win of the HDT series as he had also won at Independence earlier. Rich Smith took the runner-up honors. Those two southeastern drivers were followed up by two drivers we see run in our area--Richie Gustin took third, and Vern Jackson came home in fourth. Fifth went to a more northern Iowa driver, Mark Elliott in his Harris Dandyland Farms ride.

The Positively Racing crew had a great representation on hand for the evening. Be sure and check out the Back Stretch, Tap Fan's Tours, In Staging, and Midwest Racing News which can all be found at www.positivelyracing.com. Some of us all had long drives home but the trip to the Lee County Speedway was well worth while. For full results, be sure and check www.leecountyspeedway.com. Until next time, happy racing!

Familiar faces in Victory Lane at the Southern Iowa Speedway

It was back to Oskaloosa, Iowa and our regular mid-week stop for racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway. This night found all repeat winners taking the checkers first as they found their way successfully around the big monster half-mile. It didn't come without many caution flags flying however, as mishap after mishap kept you wondering if drivers would ever be able to get their racing rhythm going. After heavy rains cancelled last Wednesday night's show, it was good to be back for some racing action.

The Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Modifieds was the first feature taking to the track. Tyler Groenendyk drew the pole-starting postion with Cayden Carter right along side. Carter slipped past Groenendyk by lap three and from there on, he paced the field to take another win. In his interview in Victory Lane, it was announced it was his ninth over-all win of the season. Mike Shelton and Groenendyk finished second and third while Carter VandenBerg took the fourth place and AJ Johnson rounded out the top five. Twenty B-mods were on hand tonight.

Twenty-two USRA Hobby Stocks competed with nineteen taking the green flag for their feature. Centerville, Iowa driver, Derek Kirkland paced the field from the start as he repeated an earlier win. He was challenged by Kris Walker through lap nine when Walker was suddenly off power and out of the race. A restart at lap nine, found the 1X of Michael Peterson rolling his car over in turn two before a lap was completed. He was okay. When the racing action resumed, another name from the past was found to be challenging the leader, the 2JR of Rick Metcalf. Metcalf has had much success in turning laps around the Southern Iowa Speedway in years past. Kirkland would go home to the checkers flying for the win, Metcalf took the runner-up spot and Danny Thrasher came from starting well back in the field, to take third. Fourth went to the last race winner, Steve Allen, and fifth was "birthday boy", Justin Hook in car 33.

With ten USRA stock cars checked into the pits, nine would start the main event. The 1K of newcomer Don Killen was unable to start, as he was towed off even before taking the green flag in his heat race. The 20dub car of Shane Weller made it look easy as he won with a comfortable lead. Mike VanGenderen, "The Flying Dutchman", slipped by Nathan Wood in the closing laps to take second place. With Wood in third, it was Kyle Harwood in fourth and making his debut in the 14S car to take fifth, was promoter Todd Staley.

To close out the events of the night, the Musco Lighting USRA modifieds found all twelve cars in attendence start their A main. It was a screaming fast Ron VerBeek (or "RVB" as announcer Tony Paris has dubbed him) as he took the lead on lap three from starting 8th on the field, never to look back. Following VerBeek for second place, was the "plain black wrapper" of the 94 car of Steven Blattler. Colt Mather got past Brad Pinkerton on the final lap as they took third and fourth. Scott Dickey rounded out the top five.

The Southern Iowa Speedway will be hosting a special event this Thursday night, July 1st, as the MARS DIRTcar series late models come to town. Terry Phillips from Springfield, Missouri is the defending series champion. The USRA B-mods and USRA hobby stocks will also be in action. Next Wednesday night will again be a regular night of USRA weekly racing. Check http://www.rlpromotions.com for full results and other information about the track. Happy racing!
