Boone Speedway sees Richie Gustin win for the fourth time

It was a typical warm Iowa July night at the Boone Speedway this past Saturday night as the track hosted their thirteenth regular season night of racing. It was noted that car count was down a bit which was not too unexpected due to the 4th of July holiday weekend. With 120 cars on hand, they provided more than enough racing action on the night.

The 15-lap Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was first on the program. Charlie Brown liked his outside front row starting spot and took off immediately into the lead. "Good Grief" Charlie Brown would like that spot too well to relinquish it, and would take the win. Colby Oberembt challenged Brown early on until Ed Zehm managed the pass around him. Ed Zehm, the two previous week's winner, recovered nicely from kissing the backstretch wall in the opening laps, to take the runner up spot and Oberembt having to settle for third place. Fourth went to young Josh May, point leader who started the contest in the twelfth place, and fifth was Matthew Goodin.

The IMCA Northern SportMods had their usual nice field of cars on hand, requiring a B Main to complete the starting grid of the A main. Several yellows flew during the course of the contest, bunching the field on the restarts. Eric Elliott had no beef with the yellows as he skillfully advanced into the lead by lap eight. Meanwhile, Jared Timmerman had his sights set on the leader as he ran second. However, with laps winding down and Elliott in command, the race would end with Elliott taking the win over Timmerman in second. Third went to Jeremy Embrey, fourth to Jason Purvis the early laps race leader, and fifth to Tom Burke.

The IMCA modifieds was a bit short in numbers with 15 cars checked in, but not short of exciting action in their feature. Bill Davis, Jr. led early, developed a momentary lack of power and fell back several positions. This happened as yellow flew for a car stopped on the front chute. Davis was realigned in fifth position on the restart with Jon Snyder taking over the race lead. Richie Gustin closely tailed Snyder and with a bit of a "nudge", got around him to take over the lead. Brother Jimmy Gustin then drew into the picture as he also passed Snyder to move into second position. However, he then started trailing smoke (from a rubbing tire we suspect)
which is not tolerable at the Boone Speedway. This resulted in the 19 of Jimmy Gustin being shown the black flag repeatedly and also indicated on the scoreboard. Gustin did not heed the penalty situation and continued to drive hard to catch brother Richie for the rest of the race.
When the race ended, Jimmy Gustin was ushered out of the infield and into the pits. The finish of the race was shown on the scoreboard as Richie Gustin in first --his fourth win this year--the 18 of Jake Durbin in second place, Snyder third, fourth to the 93 of Cale Sponsler and fifth to Bill Davis, Jr. There seems to be a bit of a controversy as to where the 19 of Jimmy Gustin placed (he was the track point leader) but we were told that he was dq'd with no points awarded. Stay tuned for how this may all pan out!

Wayne Gifford took back-to-back wins at Boone, winning for the third time this year in the class "too tough to tame", the IMCA Stock Cars. Gifford started ninth on the field and was leading by lap two albeit with a first lap mishap in turns three and four which changed up the field. Hot Rod Richards finished behind Gifford for second place and three veteran drivers at the Boone Speedway, Steve Jackson (making a rare appearance this year) Robert Stofer, and Larry Crocheck finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. Gifford lost his shocks to a claim after the race.

One Hobby Stock feature completed the racing. It seemed as if only a lap or two would be completed before a yellow flag flew, not allowing the drivers to even get into a racing rhythm. Fifth place starter, Chris Hupp got to the front early to lead over Brandon Brinton and that would be how they would finish out their A main. Following Brinton for third was Dean Hartwig, fourth was Scott Lograsso, last week's winner, and fifth went to the 12M of Matt McDonald. Lograsso would loose his motor when the 46J of Jesse Hopkins would make the claim.

A regular night of racing is on the schedule for next Saturday night, July 10th when all classes will be in competition. Be sure and check www.raceboone.com for news and information pertaining to the Boone Speedway. Happy racing!
