It was off to our regular Friday night stop at the Marshalltown Speedway and once again, it was a night of checking the radar often. It is getting old watching approaching storms but this night at least allowed all of the heats and the Dwarf/Mod Lite feature to get completed before the heavy raindrops fell.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was hurried to the track as the skies grew darker and darker. Ivan Guerra led the pack during the opening laps until a spin on the frontstretch found him rejoining the line-up at the tail. Joel Huggins took over that top spot as the feature restarted with Cory Sonner chasing him. Meanwhile, Tim Hennigar was weaving his way through traffic from starting ninth to find himself in the third spot. Another yellow flew with just two laps to go making for a shoot-out to the finish. Joel Huggins kept that point postion to take the win, Tim Hennigar made the pass into second on the white flag lap to take runner-up, third went to Cory Sonner, fourth to Eric Hendrickson and fifth to Josh May.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite feature was barely completed before the SportMods appeared on the track. Sprinkles had begun to fall just prior to their appearance. With twenty-nine of the competitiors on hand for the night, a B-Main had completed their 24-car starting field with Ryan Engelkes taking that consy. The feature got one or two laps completed before the sprinkles grew heavy enough to pull the cars from the track. That was our clue to "gather and run". We nearly made it to our vehicle before the heavy sprinkles turned into a real rain, resulting in the end of racing for the night.
With the rain shortened program, there will be double features next week in the SportMod, Stock Car, Modified and Hobby Stock classes. Check out the Marshalltown Speedway website at www.marshalltownspeedway.com for schedule, points and other information pertaining to the track. Happy racing!
