Smith brothers take wins at Marshalltown

The Marshalltown Speedway was sharing the grounds with the Central Iowa Fair this past Friday night. It was a hot and humid night and before the night was over, we were once again watching dark clouds approaching from the north. This time, Mother Nature was kind and only provided us with a light show. The night brought a first time winner at the speedway in the IMCA SportMod class, while the other classes saw some familiar faces back in Victory Lane.

When the MADCRA Dwarf/Mod Lite feature pulled onto the track, the approaching clouds seemed to become a little more ominous and we were hoping for a quick feature event to keep the program moving along. That hope dimmed quickly when cars were tumbling in turn four before a lap was scored. From our vantage point, it appeared to be the OB of Coby Oberembt, the 95J of Jason Hall and the 66F of Eric Hendrickson ending up on their lids. Everyone was okay. When action resumed, it was Charlie Brown leading the field until Josh May had other ideas and took over the top spot. Mike Morrill also made the pass to take over second and with one lap to go, Tim Hennigar had the adrenaline going and got into the third spot. Hennigar had started well back in the field, had to go to the pits and tagged, and then shot through the pack. With Josh May taking the win, it was Morill for second, third was Hennigar, fourth went to Charlie Brown, and fifth was Mike Kennedy.

The IMCA Northern SportMods were up next for their main event. Nick Roberts took advantage of his front row starting spot and led the charge around the highbanks. Fighting for position behind him were Eric Elliott, Kyle Brown and Cayden Carter. When all was said and done, it would be 14 year old Nick Roberts taking his first feature win at the Marshalltown Speedway with Kyle Brown settling for the runner-up spot. Cayden Carter came home in third place, Scott Davis was fourth and fifth went to Geoff Olson. It appears that Davis has now taken over the points lead as he finished well ahead of Eric Flander who had led points going into the night by a mere four points.

The IMCA Stock Cars saw Dustin Smith make it back-to-back wins as he repeated from last Friday night. Jeff Wollam fought it out with Smith much of the race with Wollam giving it his best effort only to end up with that bridesmaid spot. Steve Meyer took third over Trent Murphy in fourth, and fifth was Tracy Gienger.

The IMCA Modified class had 20 cars check into the pits. Their 20-lap feature event turned into a "catch Luke Wanninger" contest. Wanninger put his #20 back into Victory Lane for the second time this year as Jimmy Gustin chased him. Jimmy Gustin was second followed by Jay Schmidt in third, Rod Clement in fourth and rounding out the top five was Tim Murty in what appears to be a former Jimmy Gustin car.

Closing out the night's events would be the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. It would be abruptly haulted before a lap was scored, when Jennifer Hulin in her #82 orange machine, did a little flip on the backstretch. She was okay and would eventually re-enter the race after getting three flat tires replaced. Point leader Devin Smith wove his way around traffic to be leading by lap five and had little difficulty in scoring the victory. Second place went to Michael Murphy....third was Eric Knutson, fourth was Newton's Calvin Dhondt and fifth went to Eric Larson.

Next week's regular points night will also included the second "spectator eliminator" challenge. The first contest was deemed such a success, it is anticipated that even more competitors will bring their licensed vehicles to go up against opponents. Join us at the Marshalltown Speedway next week when hot laps are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and races to begin at 7:30 p.m. For full results and information pertaining to the track, be sure and check out http://www.marshalltownspeedway.com/. Happy racing!

  1. Just a correction, Tim Murty's car is not a former Jimmy Gustin car. It is Tim's car, at the beginning of the season Richie Gustin was originally going to race it which is why it is lettered with a 19, however Richie got his car workin good so Tim jumped back in his own car and changed the 19G to 19M rather than spending the money to get it relettered when there is nothing wrong with the body.
