Boone Speedway 5/9/09

After the cancellation of racing at Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night, we were eager to see some racing at Boone. Race fans and drivers as well, need their racing "fix"! The pits were filled with 167 racecars on Saturday night.

Up first for their feature, was the Dwarf/Mod Lites and they started 28 cars. Rick Dennis, who we learned is a roofer, took advantage of his front row starting position, and went home with the win. Charlie Brown came home in second, followed by Ed Zehm who started in 10th, fourth was Mike Kennedy, and making his first appearance of the year at Boone, was the familiar orange car of Troy Hudson who was fifth.

The SportMods on this night, had 42 cars compete. Once again, they were the only class running B's...two of them. Randy Roberts, a former hobby stock driver, took one of the B features, and Kyle Bentley from Independence, took the second B feature. A few Independence area drivers came to "play" at Boone on Saturday night, when that track was forced to cancel their weekly program due to the rain. The feature saw several incidents which caused the yellow flag to fly. When the checkered flag finally flew, it was Redfield, Iowa driver Mike Pruitt taking it first. He made his way nicely through the pack to take a well deserved win. Local Boone driver Scott Davis came home second, followed by Paul Nagle, Jeremy Embrey and Newton, Iowa's Jake Strayer.

Everyone always anticipates the modified feature. When the polesitter, Jacob Murray did not appear, it was Russ Dickerson who inherited the point, sitting beside Billy Davis, Jr. to his outside. There were still 26 cars starting the feature. Billy Davis, Jr. had a great night all evening long, starting with his heat win and going on to a strong feature win. Behind him were several cars battling for postion. Kelly Lyons and Russ Dickerson finished second and third after some good racing between the two, and then it was Cale Sponsler and Denny Pittman.

The IMCA stock cars, known as "The Class too Tough to Tame", started their feature with 26 cars, and one unable to start. What a battle it was between Lake City's Donavon Smith and Jefferson's, Trent Murphy! Those two would battle back and forth, but in the end, it would be Donavon Smith taking the win and Murphy having to settle for second. Next across the line was Bryan Trogdon, veteran driver Robert Stofer, and newcomer, Josh Daniels from Des Moines.

The evening ended with two Hobby Stock features. The first feature saw the 25M of Michael Murphy take the win. It's not too often you see white wall tires, but those flashy tires caught my eye on this night. Taking second was Ames driver Matt Drottz who had a great run. Coming home third was Jason Stringer, followed by the m15 of Pat Mather and the 11 of Beau Kaplan. Pat Mather would have his motor claimed by the 20T of Richard Yaw, II who finished well back in the pack.

The second Hobby Stock feature ended with a very close finish, but Alan VanGorp prevailed with Devin Smith taking second. Behind them was Scranton, Iowa's Aaron Rudolph, Jesse McCollaugh and Kyle Dirks.

It was nearly 11:30 before the final checkered flag flew, but we had certainly enjoyed the evening's entertainment. We would like to say, "thank you" to all of the drivers that put on a show for us fans, week in and week out. You are all appreciated.

Full results are posted below. Happy racing!
