Friday night found promoter Toby Kruse happy to be able to get his regularly scheduled Marshalltown Speedway show in the books. Mother Nature had caused the two previous Friday shows to be cancelled.
Mike Morrill kept his perfect streak alive by taking the win in the Dwarf/Mod Lite main event. He once again, presented his trophy to one of the enthusiastic young fans that lined the fence in anticipation of being picked the recipient. Second place was taken by Tim Hennigar, third by Dusty Masolini, fourth was Eric Hendrickson and fifth was Josh May.
On this night, the other "Mr. Perfect" Kevin Sather, would find his streak come to an end in the SportMod feature. Sather had to settle for a fifth place as Boone, Iowa's Scott Davis put his car into Victory Lane. Behind Davis was young Jake Strayer, Paul Nagle, and fourth was Joel Bushore.
Twenty-three stock cars ran the feature, with four cars unable to start. Making his way forward and to the checkers first, was the familiar car 85 of Dustin Smith. Close behind in second was Trent Murphy, third was Dusty Vis, fourth Tracy Gienger and rounding out the top five was Marshalltown's own Jeff Wollam.
We love to watch the modifieds at Marshalltown and they always provide a great show. This feature would be run in just a little over 7 1/2 minutes. It was nice to see Adam Larson make his way through the pack from his 9th starting position, to take home another win at the Speedway. It was a battle with veteran Vern Jackson for a while, but in the end, he finished second, hard charging Jimmy Gustin finished third, young Nate Caruth took fourth, and hometown driver Brett Ladehoff, was fifth.
The evening ended with the hobby stock feature. Their main event for the night went to Devin Smith, brother of stock car feature winner, Dustin Smith. Second was scored to Todd Reitzler, third to Mike Timm, fourth to Michael Murphy and fifth to Eric Larson.
Saturday, we made our way to the Boone Speedway after attending a 90th birthday function for a special uncle up in Waterloo. Strange to be coming to the speedway from such a different direction. When we arrived, the pits and grandstands were filled with people; an unusual sight also, as we are always early arrivers.
The mighty little Dwarf Cars/Mod Lites ran their feature first and young Cory Dennis took the win for the second time this season. Second was Andy Hennigar, then came Cory's father Rick Dennis in third, and fourth was Andy's brother Tim Hennigar. Rounding out the top five was Mike Morrill who started way back in 18th place.
The SportMod feature found third generation driver, Jeremy Embrey take the checkers first, followed by Brian Miller, Iowa State student Geoff Olson in third, Matthew Meinecke in fourth and Tim Love in fifth.
Up next was the modifieds and Billy Davis, Jr. put his yellow #1 in Victory Lane tonight. Tim Stevens from Cedar Rapids kept a close trail on Davis, but had to settle for second. Third was Jake Durbin and fourth was "Toddzilla" Todd Shute. Fifth was Scott Baker in his beautiful #15x car. Earlier in the race, Shute and Kelly Lyons (a driver we remember from back in his hobby stock days) put on a fierce battle, only to have contact made between the two, which resulted in a flat for Lyons. Also on hand to try and tame the track, was a visiting driver Josh Foster from Montrose, Iowa down in far southeastern Iowa. The #77 of Foster made a good showing and came home with a 7th place finish right behind Randy Havlik. Foster had started in 21st position. I believe he can often be found running at 34 Raceway in Burlington and Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.
The stock cars had a night of attrition early. With only three laps down, the field was whittled to 14 cars and by lap 7, only 11 cars were left. Unfortunately, several incidents on the track saw many of those cars not only having to exiting the action for the night, but with much damage to repair in the days ahead. Jefferson, Iowa driver, Trent Murphy powered his way to the front from starting 11th with 12th place starter Donavon Smith right behind him across the finish line. Veteran Larry Crocheck came home in third, Michael Jaennette in fourth and Tim French in fifth.
The night concluded with two hobby stock features. Winning the first feature was Justin Maschke with Cody Gustoff in second, Daniel Hilsabeck in third, Justin Hopkins in fourth, and fifth was Aaron Rudolph. Feature number 2 saw a new face in Victory Lane...at least for us...in the 9R driver Matt Hudspeth. Hot on his heels was Richard Yaw II, third was Scott Lograsso, fourth Jason Purvis and fifth Alan VanGorp. Earlier in the heat races, the 00 car of Kyle Dirk's took a nasty roll off of turn three. He was transported to the hospital for observation, though he was alert and talking. We hope he will be fine and able to return to racing soon.
There is a lot of racing action this Memorial Day weekend at various tracks in our area and we hope to be attending some of them. The Ron Little Memorial race will be in action tonight, Sunday at Stuart Speedway and the Deery Brothers late models will be in Boone on Monday, just to name a few.
Boone results are listed below. Happy racing!
