Friday night we traveled to our "home track", the Marshalltown Speedway. It was a night of double features in three classes due to the previous weeks rainout. That was a nice bonus for the new attendees, one of which we know came from Indiana, for the night's entertainment. The make-up hobby feature was the first on the track. It started the night off with a thrilling finish which saw Dustin Elliott take the win at the line over Eric Knutson. Following next was Chad Koch, Michael Murphy and Terry Shaffar. The "Class Too Tough To Tame", the IMCA stock cars ran their make-up feature next. Kellogg, Iowa's Clay Deppe lead the race early, but Sean Johnson, who had started in the 10th place, made his way to the front in fine fashion, and took over the top spot. Deppe settled for second, followed by Jeff Wollam, Trent Murphy and Don Vis. The final make-up feature was the IMCA modifieds. Richie Gustin, driving the 99M car of Tim Murty, took the win, followed by Marshalltown's own Brett Ladehoff, Troy Cordes in 3rd, and Adam Larson and Joey Schaefer rounding out the top five.
Those make-up features were a great way to begin our night, but there was still a whole program of action awaiting us. Going into the night, two drivers were maintaining perfect records for winning their divisions so far this year. In the Dwarf/Mod Lites, Mike Morrill, had to come from his 12th starting postion, to keep his record perfect, and take the win. Coming home after him were Mike Kennedy, Eric Hendrickson, Andy Hennigar and James May. Mike Morrill always gives his trophy to a lucky youngster in the crowd. I'm sure he has gained many fans from this nice gesture. I recall another driver often doing this in the "old days", when the children would line the fence to get the trophy from modified driver Bill Davis, Sr.
Another "Mr. Perfect" trying to retain his title, was Kevin Sather, in the SportMod class. He was not to be denied his title as well, and made his way to the front and took the win followed by Scott Davis, Geoff Olson, David Schlicht, and Brad Iverson. Promoter Toby Kruse has raised the payout to the winning driver who can beat either of the perfect drivers if they are still running at the finish. The "bounty" will be an extra $75 on Dwarf/Mod Lite driver Mike Morrill and $125 on SportMod driver Kevin Sather.
The Stock Car feature saw an impressive run to the front by Brian Irvine, a former IMCA Supernational's winner. Second place was Steve Meyer, followed by Sean Johnson, Trent Murphy, and Dustin Smith.
The dust had been flying for sometime, but the track was remaining smooth and racy, but slick, when the modified's pulled on the track for their feature. Ames, Iowa's Adam Larson, took home another impressive win by making his way to the front from a ways back in the pack of a nice field of cars. Crossing the line behind him was Troy Cordes, Mike O'Lear, Jon Snyder, and Nate Caruth.
Finishing the night's racing was the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Driver Adam Gebel took the checkers first, followed by Gary Pfantz, Terry Shaffar, Dustin Elliott and Mike Timm. Gebel would have his motor claimed by the 43 car of Nic Shearer.
Boone was up next on our travels on Saturday. They had cancelled their previous week's show, due to rain. The track remained very racy all night long, with several racing grooves. Although they did their famous farming session, we're not sure it would have even been necessary on this night.
The Dwarf/Mod Lite cars were the only class having to run a B Main this week. It was nice to see their feature go flag to flag. Cory Dennis took the win, with Tim Hennigar, Charlie Brown, James May, and Andy Hennigar behind him.
The SportMod 18 lap feature saw several yellow flags flying before they were able to complete their race. In the end it was the 5M car of Matthew Meineceke crossing in first place but he was later disqualified for being too light. That would give the win to Jared Timmerman. Following him would be Scott Davis, Kevin Sather, David Schlicht and Joel Bushore.
The IMCA stock cars found a couple of Newton, Iowa drivers in the mix up front as Michael Jaennette and Mike VanGenderen battled for a while. In the end, it was Jaennette taking the win, Steve Jackson in second, Mike VanGenderen settling for third, Trent Murphy fourth, and Lake City driver, Donavon Smith taking fifth.
The IMCA modifieds saw a veteran driver lead the entire race from the pole position. Terry Pruitt in his number 78 machine, won the race with John Logue in hot pursuit, and Scott Baker, Cale Sponsler and Mike Molle rounding out the top five. It was nice to see Todd Shute racing after what we understand was a terrible incident at the State Fairgrounds Speedway the previous night. From what we heard, his own car was destroyed. He jumped in to the 3Z car of Randy Havlik, and although he did not have a successful night, it is always nice to see racing family, helping their own. It's one of the things we love about racing.
Two Hobby Stock features ended the night's racing. The first feature was won by Daniel Hilsabeck followed by Brandon Pruitt, Alan VanGorp, Cody Gustoff and Justin Maschke. The second feature saw the m15 of Pat Mather take the win and following him were Chris Hupp, Beau Kaplan, Matt McDonald, and Dean Hartwig.
Full results for Boone are listed below. We look foward to bringing you many more future racing results. Happy racing!
